Game 60: Mets at Nats

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
It feels like I've written this more than a few times already this season, but once again the Nationals are facing something close to a must-win game tonight. After last night's lopsided loss dropped them below .500 and into third place in the NL East, they really can't afford to drop another game in the standings and lose the series to a not-good Mets club.

So, Gio Gonzalez, it's up to you to come through with a big performance tonight. It's also up to the lineup to get something going against the winless Shaun Marcum after last night's lifeless showing against Dillon Gee.

The Nationals have yet another new face in their bullpen tonight. With Stephen Strasburg officially placed on the 15-day DL, left-hander Xavier Cedeno has been promoted from Class AAA Syracuse. Cedeno, claimed off waivers from Houston after the season began, doesn't figure to be here long. The Nationals will need to call up Ross Ohlendorf on Saturday to start against the Twins, so somebody else will have to be dropped before then.

Updates to come, please check back...

6:30 p.m. — As you can see from the updating photo above, it's raining here and the tarp is on the field. So, the start of tonight's game is officially delayed. No word on a potential starting time, but this frontal system is supposed to stick around through late tomorrow, so it obviously doesn't look real good. I'll update if and when I hear anything else.

Lombo in left field instead of Shark again...against a RHP no less. Interesting.

L said...

If Friday is rained out, though (which looks likely), they'll be able to call up Ohlendorf for a Saturday double header without sending anyone down, right?

Steady Eddie said...

Eric -- well, at least in the past, Lombo has hit better from the right side than the left. But I take your meaning re Shark, though the simpler explanation is BA. Nats' need for offense is more dire than any other consideration, and Lombo has been the RBI man lately. I'd suspect Davey still has Shark's Saturday night 9th inning fail in mind vs Lombo's three GW sac flies since last Friday.

CN said...

lawrence,
yep, the team could have a 26 man roster on the days of double headers.

an off-day monday would allow the team to have everyone pitch on normal rest until next sturday, jun 15, when detwiler could make his first start since being placed on the DL. i believe the plan is to have det pitch on rehab on monday, so he too would be on 4 days rest if he were to pitch next saturday.

Eric said...

Probably, Eddie, but Shark has been getting better and better lately it seems like. Didn't he hit a double off the bench last night?

Continuing the discussion from the previous post, since I kind of poked a finger in that hornet's nest by doing a little research for Ghost:

I think one of the things that leads to the self-back patting that some find distasteful is the tendency of people to personalize disagreements and insist that those with a differing view don't know what they're talking about. So when someone calls you a "dim bulb" for thinking that Rendon could play 2B in the majors without a full year at the position in the minors, it's understandable that you'd want to remind that someone, if he were still here, that you were right and he was wrong.

Last year, I took the position that Storen would not reclaim his closer spot immediately upon returning from the DL because Clip had performed so admirably and for so long in his absence. A certain poster disagreed, and several others agreed with him. But that certain poster took it a step further and rather than just express his opinion and support it, he repeatedly ridiculed me, saying I had no idea what I was talking about. So you're damn right I'd like to remind him that I was right and he was wrong, as I'm doing right now if he's reading this under whatever his current pseudonym is.

On the other hand, if the disagreement is civil and in the spirit of sharing opinions and knowledge and maybe even learning something from each other and having a few laughs, there's no need to settle scores.

Gonna need at least 7 innings, Gio. No pressure!

Not thrilled about Lombo in left field; his performance yesterday was...not great. Not that it made the difference in that game or anything, though, of course.

Eric said...

To be clear, I'm not advocating for Shark over Lombo, per se, it's just interesting how differently things play out than I might expect them to.

My little Wonkling graduated HS last night. The family, the in-laws, and two of her friends have tickets for Sec 314, Row G tonight. Hope to meet some of our peeps from here!

Section 222 said...

EmDash, I agree on Lombo's outfield skills. I woudn't mind seeing him platoon or alternate with Rendon at 2B until we see which of them is swinging a more productive bat. The Shark plays a very good left field, and seems to be heating up a bit, so I'd be ok with him at that position until Harper returns.

Pete said...

If tonight and tomorrow get rained out, with the off-day monday, would that mean Gio and Karns go saturday, zimm sunday and then Haren Tuesday with no Ohlendorf with detwiler and Harper on the horizon? cause that would be very welcome news.

natsfan1a said...

Congrats to the Wonkling!

JaneB said...

Wonk, what a perfect way to celebrate the graduation! Congratulations to you all, and may the Nats give you something extra to celebrate about.

I, too, was wondering about the Shark being kept out of the line up tonight. He has been coming on lately. Though so has Lombo.

I was wondering how tomorrow's almost certainly cancelled game would play. Loooong day at the ball park Saturday. They'll clear people out of the make-up game to get them in for the afternoon game and concert.

I hope Gio is flawless and the rest of the guys have some bat mojo going on. HOW LONG till we get the kid back? Man, is it bleak without him.

Winless?
The Nats have a way of making pitchers who are washed up veterans, winless or 5th starters in the rotation look like Cy Young candidates.

Oddities of the day

- How often does this_ happen Kyle Seager hit a two-strike, two-out, grand-slam in the bottom of the 14th, for the Mariners, in a losing effort!! White Sox-Mariners were scoreless after 13. Both teams scored 5 in the 14th. Sox ended up winning 7-5 in 16 innings. (Adam Dunn was the only player to play the entire game without getting a hit. He went 0-4 -- but he did get four walks, 3 of them intentional) (And how often does a relief pitcher surrender 5 runs and get the win!)

- Astros hit six HR's in the first four innings (and they weren't hitting against Haren)

- D-Backs' 35-year old Willie Bloomquist went 2-for-4. And lowered his BA to .611 (ok, it's only 20 plate appearances, but it sounds cool)

- The Nationals’ run differential (-34) is worse than the Cubs’, Royals’, and Angels’ combined (-28)

- RA Dickey hit an RBI double that scored 41 year-old catcher Henry Blanco from first. That must've been some kind of slow-motion running!

- Last night for the Mariners: Juan Pierre had more career plate appearances than the other eight men in their lineup by over 6,000

- Cards' Yadier Molina is tied for the team lead with five stolen base attempts

And riddle me this, Batman. If you express the opposite opinion from someone else, aren't you implicitly saying that you're right and they're wrong? (Unless of course you like to express opinions that you don't personally believe in just to spark arguments, which is always a possibility.) So what is so bad about someone else asserting that their opinion is right? You act like you've been mortally wounded if someone happens to disagree with your opinion. No one is keeping score here, you know. Except those who like to think that they're always right.

Thanks, JaneB. We were bummed when Stras was DL'd -- but happy for this game when Gio was announced. Now we just need some good-enough weather.

Yes -- the Wonkling is thrilled as two of her favorite things of all-time are happening: (a) no HS homework (forever); and (b) watching a Nats game.

BTW -- note to all -- after Stras got scratched, I got the tix, and they were $12.50 each (!!). For Sec 314 (from nationals.com it wuold have cost $26/ea plus some extra add-on costs).

Right now there are dozens of tix there for $10 or less (I would guess due to the weather report?)

To ask for the links and then post those links again was just overkill in my opinion. I did not say anything negative about you, I just don't need to have it brought up time and time again. Keep supplying us with good inside info and we will all be the better for it. Keep reminding us who said it first and it suffers.

So he told you that you didn't know what you were talking about, and now you want to tell him that he didn't know what he was talking about? And this makes you more civil than him how?

Speaking for 222, I think the answer is: well, yeah, sort of.

I'm sure if 222 and whatisname disagreed civilly about it at the time, 222 wouldn't be thinking about it now.

But whatisname ranted, raved, screamed, insulted, acted arrogantly, did it all publicly, and made it personal. It's human nature to feel stung by stuff like that. And it's human nature to want to see an arrogant character who acts bad and thinks he knows-it-all be shows that he, in fact, was wrong and doesn't know-it-all.

All that said, I'm not necessarily defending all that's going on here. While it's human nature to want to call out the bad guys -- that doesn't mean one can't strive to be above it.

222 wasn't stooping to his level -- but he was stooping a bit. Let's rise above it. That's what I try to teach Wonkling.

I, too, was on the receiving end of some nasty comments from whatisname. However, I'm trying my best to move on, rather than trying to prove he was wrong (anyone remember his months-long assertion that "Werth = expensive bench player" -- ooops, I'm doing it . . . ;-) )

In the bigger picture, this place has had a much, much, nicer tone in the past week. Let's move on and interact with each other on a higher plane.

Life is good. DC has a baseball team after decades of baseball emptiness.

Can we get a redo on 2013?

Shawn Marcum is a junkballer type, which tends to be difficult for the team more than normal. Of the Nats players who've faced him, Zimm and LaRoche have very positive track records, everyone else little to no success.

Despite his poor ERA, his FIP is much better - 3.21. Good strike-out to walk ratio, low number of home runs. That indicates he's been fairly unlucky so far. Let's hope that continues. *g*

Rendon is going to be a keeper. As horrible as 2013 is going to end up, the Nats could return in 2013 as a true contender if they follow Mick's 7 steps:

1) Go with Rendon at 2b the duration of this season with Lombo backing him up.

2) When Espi is 100% if ever, give him one last shot..if he still is the same, trade his ass in the winter of 2014

3) Rest Stras, Det and Bryce as long as it takes. STOP playing injured players!

4) Focus should be on finding a REAL 5th pitcher, free agent or what we may have. Haren is Terrible, get his sorry ass out of here! I would also find a back up for Werth because Jayson will never play in 100 games again, he is too injury prone and getting older...maybe Tyler Moore is that guy or maybe Lombo... the Shark will never be that guy

5) I would also focus on finding 2 more relief pitchers

6) I would fire the medical and training staff and get new blood in here, the guys we have now SUCK

7) Most important, get a young and progressive manager when Davey leaves who will hire his own batting coach. Eck is a Zero and if Rizzo is not back, please hire a guy who is honest and not full of s--- like this bald headed stooge

Section 222 and DC Wonk, perhaps you should name names instead of continuing to complain about "what's his name." Because I think you're complaining about different people here. Section 222 is good at looking things up, so perhaps he could produce one of those oh so uncivil comments his "what's his name" made so you could compare it to the way you were insulted by your "what's his name." That way you could be sure that you guys are talking about the same boogeyman.

mick said...

My predictions... you can raz me all you want if I am wrong, unfortunately, I will not be... Nats will get blasted tonight but may score 2-3 runs...Twins and Rockies will sweep us and we will be 8 under 500, fans will begin to boo by the the end of Twins series. Nats will have a worst record than the 2010 team did at the same time of the season. Nats will end up losing 85-88 games and finish ahead of the last place Marlins. A new GM, manager and medical staff will propel the Nats back to 90 wins in 2014...that is why I am optimistic in the long term. In the short term, the team's garbage meaning both a few players and its management and the injuries are just too much to overcome

Section 222 said...

This is how they try to intimidate free thought and feelings fans have on the team You have to march in lock step with them. The worst part is, there are those who take and "cherry pick" a comment and twist it... another words they flat out lie about what you post

my advice is follow Dice Clay... tell them to b--- you lol

You're always so optimistic, mick...

The Harper news is my only real concern. If he's out for a very extended period...well. There's obviously not a possible backup plan for missing a lot of time from Bryce Harper; every potential replacement is going to be a massive dropoff.

A DC Wonk said...

if Rizzo is not back, please hire a guy who is honest and not full of s--- like this bald headed stooge...

Whoa, there, Mick. Do you have any idea how bad a mess the Nats were in before Rizzo had control? Don't you remember two 100+ loss seasons (dude, 100 losses is a *lot*)?

And _do_ you remember the awful shape the minor league system was in after MLB's ownership raided the cubby and left it close to bare?

(And that's not even counting the disastrous Dominican Republic major minor-league mess)

Rizzo has done wonders. You can't build a great team *with* great depth overnight. Heck, most people can't build a solid team out of the dregs that the Nats were at all!

baseballswami said...

So what time do you think it will be when we get our first draft pick? If he is a pitcher I hope he signs fast because we may need him at some point this season. Not quite the sane without that high pick with Stras, Harper, Giolito, right?

At the time of our Storen/Clipp debate, you were prAA, and you offended plenty of commenters other than me. I'm not going to post examples of your incivility, but anyone who wants to read some of them (though I'm pretty sure no one does) can go to this link.

Welcome back though. As I've said several times before, you obviously know a lot about baseball and care about the Nats. We might even be friends, if you weren't so intent on being enemies. I might even at some point stop asking you how the crow tasted.

Perhaps-- he is a natural outfielder , but so is Bernadina. He is swinging a hot bat-- for now, but maybe so is Bernie and how long will it last? If Werth was still out and we needed two of them , maybe. If Lombo was giving up winning runs, then maybe. All things considered it's a definite maybe.

ok, hate to be weird and know i am new to the blog but out of boredom due to no nats game, am watching nat geo "night stalkers" which is following leopards in sri lanka and just learned that a pair of leopards mated 12x in a single hour...now, that's an impressive stat and much more impressive than any single Nats stat all year.

Well, everybody is gone anyway, Paul. And the 12x/hr is for like, 10 seconds each, which is a lot less impressive when you put it that way. And I ain't going no further.

After seeing how Kirk Gibson is treating Ian Kennedy tonight I wouldnt want him Manager of my team. That guy is toast. 99 pitches and 10 earned runs in 4 innings. This guy was elite 2 years ago. Something isnt right.

sec 3, haha...good point, but you're right, they had these incredible infrared night cameras and it looked like what you said - 10 seconds per...have always loved nature shows and no, had no clue i was going to witness what i witnessed...good to see i wasn't talking to myself but maybe would have been better if i were!
