Roark joins Nats, Detwiler to 60-day DL

In need of a long reliever with the ability to start if called upon, the Nats selected right-hander Tanner Roark from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. Roark will fulfill the role of Ross Ohlendorf who is on the 15-day disabled list (retro to Aug. 1) with shoulder inflammation.

Ross Detwiler was also transferred to the 60-day disabled list with a lower back strain and lefty reliever Xavier Cedeno was sent back down to Triple-A.

Roark, 26, is up in the majors for the first time in his career and was told of the decision on Sunday night. Though excited to finally realize his dream, Roark wasn’t allowed to tell many people for fear the news would get out.

“I was told to keep it quiet,” he said. “I was doing my best to keep it quiet. I told my parents and told them to keep it quiet. I told my fiancĂ©, that was about it.”

Acquired by the Nats in a 2010 trade with the Texas Rangers, Roark was thriving at Syracuse with a 9-3 record and a 3.15 ERA through 105 2/3 innings. He made 11 starts and 22 relief appearances, flashing a versatility that he’ll likely use at the major level.

“He can do both,” manager Davey Johnson said. “He’s been throwing the ball good, Spin [Williams] really liked him. He fits well.”

The Nationals may need a starter in a few weeks when Taylor Jordan hits his innings limit. He is said to have three or four starts left and, with Ohlendorf and Detwiler rehabbing, Roark could see his role expanded if the opportunity arises. Johnson said Roark would be a viable option in that scenario.

Ohlendorf to DL with shoulder inflammation

After leaving the Nats' blowout loss in Detroit on July 31 with a tired arm, Ross Ohlendorf has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1.

The official diagnosis is right shoulder inflammation as left-hander Xavier Cedeno has been called up from Syracuse to take his place.

Ohlendorf exited the Nats' loss against the Tigers after seeing a significant drop in his velocity. He was pitching in relief as he has for much of the last two months since getting called up from Syracuse on June 12. Ohlendorf has been a nice surprise for the Nats this year, going 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA through ten total appearances.

Ohlendorf has made two starts for Washington in 2013 and was close to making more due to injuries in the Nats' rotation and a nearing innings limit for Taylor Jordan. Ohlendorf recently threw 114 pitches across seven innings in a Nationals' win over the Mets on July 26. He has a 1.38 ERA as a starter this season.

Game 60: Mets at Nats

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
It feels like I've written this more than a few times already this season, but once again the Nationals are facing something close to a must-win game tonight. After last night's lopsided loss dropped them below .500 and into third place in the NL East, they really can't afford to drop another game in the standings and lose the series to a not-good Mets club.

So, Gio Gonzalez, it's up to you to come through with a big performance tonight. It's also up to the lineup to get something going against the winless Shaun Marcum after last night's lifeless showing against Dillon Gee.

The Nationals have yet another new face in their bullpen tonight. With Stephen Strasburg officially placed on the 15-day DL, left-hander Xavier Cedeno has been promoted from Class AAA Syracuse. Cedeno, claimed off waivers from Houston after the season began, doesn't figure to be here long. The Nationals will need to call up Ross Ohlendorf on Saturday to start against the Twins, so somebody else will have to be dropped before then.

Updates to come, please check back...

Detwiler to DL, Cedeno coming up

USA Today Sports Images
Ross Detwiler is headed to the DL with a lingering oblique injury.
His lingering oblique strain not yet completely healed, Ross Detwiler will have to spend time on the disabled list, forcing the Nationals to look for another fill-in starter for Tuesday night's game against the Orioles.

Detwiler appeared to be good to take the mound as planned after completing a bullpen session Saturday with no issues. But while testing himself during a Sunday morning fielding drill, the left-hander felt the oblique tighten up, and team doctors decided not to take any chances.

"He went out and was doing some running and playing catch and complained," manager Davey Johnson said. "Whereas it's better than it was, it's tight, and we didn't feel like it was the best thing. ... We're not going to rush it and exacerbate it at this point."

Detwiler will be placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 16, the day after he last pitched in Los Angeles. He would be eligible to return June 1, one day before his turn in the rotation would come up again (Sunday in Atlanta).
