VIDEO: Update on Strasburg

Davey Johnson gave an update before Saturday's game on Stephen Strasburg, confirming the right-hander is still on track to return June 16. Strasburg threw a bullpen session that showed no complications for his strained right lat muscle. He was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 6.

The Nationals completed their 2013 draft on Saturday as well, picking a total of 39 players. Only three of the Nats' newest members are still alive in the NCAA Tournament, two from Rice University and one from UCLA. If you want to check out the Nats' draft picks in the tournament, here is some information on when you can see them:

RHP John Simms (11th round) and C Geoffrey Perrott (16th round) are with the Rice Owls as they take on North Carolina State in the Super Regional round. Rice lost in the first game vs. NCSU on Saturday by the score of 4-3 and plays Sunday at 4:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

Nats' 19th round pick, LF Brenton Allen from UCLA, can be seen in action on Sunday as well. The Bruins play California St. Fullerton at 10:00 p.m. on ESPN2.

Any idea when we might hear about roster moves?

So, slowly but surely we will be getting our guys back. First was Werth, then we added Rendon, now Strasburg in a week. Hoping Harper gets good news and also looking forward to winning this series!

If Kilore is correct about Marrero, he could just be that 26th guy for the double header. I did not look at the boxscore yet but did Kobernus get an AB yesterday? Why do you have him here if he is not going to get some sort of a shot?

Go Nats!

Just for fun, I went and read the update on our draft picks. I obviously have no idea how this draft will turn out but you can't help but notice one thing. If my grandson does not get to at least 6' tall he limits his opportunities. Of the 40 listed, only 4 were under 6' and one of those was Bucky Dents kid. I do remember when the O's came to play Maryland one spring at Maryland and the size difference was clear even back then.

Go Nats!

Ssorry the injury bug has even hitt the Nats reporters. Get well soon Mark!

What a bunch of bums.

Yikes, get well Mark is right!

Anyway, Werth's power is good to see. Him not taking walks, any ever, is not, if he's going to bat 2. They need to bat Rendon 2 and move Werth down behind ALR. He's a run producer.

Also wondering about Kobernus on the bench deteriorating. Could be another day in a weird week in Nats Town. We used to be boring.

Kobernus did not get an AB yesterday, but neither did Moore or Solano. However, there really wasn't an opportunity for any of them as Lombo and Tracy were the pinch hitters for the pitcher and there were no opportunities for pinch runners or for double switches to move the pitcher'a spot as far away in the order as possible. If Stammen had not blown the game he was already set up for a long run in extras with the pitcher's spot at its normal 9th place in the order.

Face it, Kobernus is the 25th man on this roster, and in most cases the 25th man does not get many ABs. They could send him back down and bring up someone else, but then that guy will be the 25th man and you'll complain that he doesn't get enough ABs. Hey, maybe they can bring back Espinosa as the 25th man when he gets off the DL. No one will complain if he doesn't get enough ABs!

When Davey left Gio in to bat with man on base, and the Nats behind by a run, I thought for a moment -- "bullpen is rested, we need a pinch hitter." Then reason took over -- not a single player on our bench has has a higher batting average than he does. That includes Tracy and Moore of course, but also Lombo, Solano, and poor Kobernus, who has only 2 PAs since he was brought up.

And what do you know, Gio advanced the runner with a sac fly. Good job Davey.

Get Your Re(n)d On said...

Gio advanced the runner, but it's only a sac fly if the runner scores. Otherwise, just a productive out. And as it turned out, it was a smart move to keep Gio in for the sixth inning even though his pitch count was high. In a tight game that goes into extras, you can burn through the bullpen quickly as we saw yesterday. Imagine who might have had to take the mound if they'd gone 20 like the Mets and Marlins did yesterday!

If Davey had wanted to leave Krol in for another inning and delay the entry of Stammen to play the "pitch till you drop" role, he could have double switched in Moore for ALR or the Shark and let him bat second in the bottom of the 10th. Krol ended up making just four pitches, so maybe that would have been a good idea. But, of course, that would have meant that our "best" LH pinch hitter woudn't have been come up in the bottom of the inning. And you're right, Stammen would have had to bat in the middle of the order once he came in.

If Moore were a better option, maybe I'd complain about not making that move, but he's nearly as bad as Tracy right now.

I think what has been holding this team back was Mark's appendix

For David Proctor, here's Werth's Porsche. Not a great video and I cursed at the end (whoops). There were 6 of us in the car with 2 kids plus the radio going. The roar of Werth's engine at the 30 second mark still can be heard.

Fun watching 2 of the callups. Rendon and Krol are getting it done.

"Cody Dent had a forgettable season for the Gators this year. He started 24 games, mostly at third base, and batted .134 with seven walks and four RBIs."

With that BA he will fit right in! Yowza! Calling Eckstein for the quick fix!

Nats 128 said...

"Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman went 0 for 5 and struck out three times. His front side flew open on several empty swings at pitches on the outer half, particularly on off-speed stuff.

The Nats didn’t always execute the little things, either. Trailing 3-2, Bernadina led off the fifth with a double. The next batter, catcher Kurt Suzuki, swung at the first pitch, a slider, and grounded to short. It was an unproductive out. In that situation, Suzuki has to wait for a pitch he can hit to the right side in order to move the runner to third with less than two outs."

Those comments are from the Washington Times. How many times have we read those same thoughts here. Since Zimmerman's 3 HR day I can only remember the one double off of Parnell. His BA has dropped 31 points since that game in Balt.

Washington Time postgame report

Lets play 2 and win 2!!

I set the over/under for the total number of walks Nats hitters get in today's doubleheader at three.

Who thinks over?

wow...was at the game in my teddy plan seats, sect. 135, row c, next to the mayor or Nats town with my now former girlfriend. Why do I break up after a tough loss...hurtin today, could use a win.

Gonat said...

Game 1 starter Scott Diamond for the Twins is a lefty. Wouldn't be surprised if Davey goes very righty in Game 1. Marrero at 1st? Werth at leadoff?

jeffwx said...

I should be praying but I think this is one reason the Nats brought up Marrero...They need somebody/anybody to hit...from Nats Journal:

""They have five walks in their last seven games. Their team slash line is .230/.286/.372, which is simply dreadful: Collectively, they’re hitting like Brian Dozier, reaching base like Greg Dobbs and slugging like Angel Pagan.""

JaneB said...

I think Chris Marrero is up as the Tyler Moore back up. If he's better than Moore today, I think Moore goes back to daily work in Syracuse (and we know he's good; daily work can maybe help him). If we're playing with the pieces we have in our current set, that's a logical play, to see if we can get the bench bats going.
Jeffwx -- ugh. Hard day and night for you, I imagine. ONE DAY, I'm sure, you'll be telling that story and laughing about it: "can you BELIEVE that....?"
I hope it's sooner than later.
And I hope that Mark is feeling way better after the survey. At least you had a sterilized knife and drugs, even if the surgery DID take longer!

JaneB, just a bet. I think Marrero starts at 1st in Game #1

Survey? Which of Mark's orifices did they crawl into while he was knocked out?

Gonat said...

Kobernus CF, Lombardozzi LF, Zimmerman 3B, Werth RF, LaRoche 1B, Desmond SS, Rendon 2B, Suzuki C, Zimmermann P

Going very righty except 1st base. Thanks for coming Chris Marrero

thanks everyone, It's good to have a community, albiet virtual but with like interests, to be a part of.

Kobernus who gets no reps not only is starting but leading off. No pressure there. Why not Werth?

Nats 128 said...

Kobernus who is a career 2nd baseman and hasnt gotten as much as a sniff in the outfield gets his 1st start in Centerfield?

OK Davey, you better have this one right!

Gonat said...

Don't worry. Kobernus has 9 games in his Minor League career in Centerfield and it's possible that some of those 9 games weren't full games in CF.
