Game 44: Nats at Padres

Today the Nationals play the finale of their four-game series against the Padres out at Petco Park with what looks almost like a spring training lineup. Bryce Harper is out again with a sore left knee, there is no Jayson Werth of course, and Ian Desmond is taking a scheduled day off. Danny Espinosa will move over to shortstop with Steve Lombardozzi playing second.

Dan Haren (4-4, 4.76) will take the hill vs. San Diego after a string of good outings. He is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in the month of May so far. He has seen a lot of the Padres over the years having formerly been in their division with Arizona. In 14 career starts against the club, Haren has a 3.39 ERA across 95 2/3 innings.

Pitching for the Padres is 26-year-old Andrew Cashner (2-2, 2.84) who is off the best start of his young career. He has made five relief appearances against the Nationals over the last four years and has yet to allow a run to the team.

Enjoy the game...

Let's go, Dan. Let's go, NATS!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

an intersting stat that stands out. When the NATS score at least 3 they have only lost twice. twice. Score 3 almost a sure win.

Just do their jobs hitting.

Three runs

MicheleS said...

GO DAN! GO Danny! Go Lombo!!! Someone get on base for Ryan & Adam! GYFNG!!!!

Doc said...

Hey, we're 1.5 games behind the Bravos!

Where's ARen when we need him???

Eugene in Oregon said...

I don't mean to sound cynical, but does this line-up mean that Dan Haren has to allow a negative number of runs in order to have a shot at a curtly W?

Eugene in Oregon said...

Okay, I did mean to sound cynical. But not too cynical.

Rabbit34 said...

Eugene.....you "did good".

NatsLady said...

Hr came pretty close last time. Just, y'know Kershaw.

>does this line-up mean that Dan Haren has to allow a negative number of runs in order to have a shot at a curtly W?

Eugene in Oregon said...

Sorry, 'curly' not 'curtly' W. Although the Nats would likely settle for any kind of W they could get today.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

2012 NATS came noth not with the best 25. Harper came up and they took off.

2013 again they come north without their best 25. Once ARen takes over second base I suspect they will take off.

I guess it this year xontrol business that causes the problem, but ARen has been up so call him back. Not sure why I see if as a much better hitter than Espi, but Rizzo can,'t.

jeeves said...

Davey reminds me of the parents who came to school and insisted that Johnny could not possibly have done what he was accused of.He is obviously going to stick with the same ineptness in hitting no matter what--even if that ineptness has gone on for most of two and one half years. (read Espy) Maybe Marrero, Kobernus, Perez, Rendon and company won't hit consistently at the major league level, but it might be worth a try. Espy, the Shark, and to a lesser degree Moore have certainly shown they can't. If a prerequisite for a major league manger is to have some imagination, and I think they should, then Davey hasn't passed the test. However, despite Davey, I still believe this team will come through. It has the best all around pitching in baseball. A forecast--best minor league pitcher and one who I believe could contribute if Det has a problem is Taylor Jordan. NatsJack, I've been a fan of his for a while now and mentioned it afew times on Luke Erikson's site.

Doc said...

Yeah but it was a curtly post, Eugene! LOL

David Proctor said...

Ugh, this guy seems good.

Exposremains said...

I count 5 holes in that lineup. Good luck with that.

David Proctor said...

Well at least Ryan had a good hack.

Knoxville Nat said...

So people are still going on and on about Espinosa's lack of hitting and that is understandable. Some are still commenting in a negative manner about the bullpen and the high wire act some of them seem to perform night after night. Again, understandable and rightfully so.

As for me I will make the observation that unless the Nationals play better team defense, not just Zimmerman and Desmond's mistakes mind you, this team will continue to perform under expectations and disappoint many come October.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If we miss a spot the other team hits it. when opponent misses the spot good chance we dint swing or swing and miss. That is the real hitting problem we dont hit enough mistakes.

David Proctor said...

Haren's strategy is to injure all the Padres before they can get to him. BRILLIANT!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Got to love it. Runner turns ankle and has no trouble stealing a base

Section 222 said...

From the annals of meaningless stats, while showing the lineup, MASN puts up Espi's stats playing at shortstop! That's rich.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Take no Nats 2 terribly located pitched both whacked.

We just need to do the same.

SD put 2 right for us to clobber and we fly out.

Section 222 said...

Starting to watch game now. 20 minutes behind. That means I can skip all the commericials. That works. Have a fun game everyone. See you on the other side.

EmDash said...

Haren's stuff is elevated. That means bad Haren.

EmDash said...

His back and leg were bothering him last start, if I recall. Still not 100%?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

This is reminding me of the Braves gane on April 14 where Gio was awful and was smashed alk over, and how hitters left the game with a few measly hits.

Odds are based on hat has happened we probably have given up way too many.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Any of you seem to find stats all over do you know how many runs we get and give up in the first?

Also our average and opponents average in first.

Seems we have a majority 3 up 3 down, and record much loeer percentage of. 3 up 3 down.

Secret wasian man said...

No way our sick offense recovers from this defici. And how dare FP Santan jello lectures us fans in the top of the first inning about being gloomy. This team stinks. I'm sick of the excuses by everybody. Excuses are for losers. There are 13 teams in this league with better records than the Nats.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

At least The Shark swung at a fastball unlike the 2 in front of him who didnt bother.

Good job Roger.

Eugene in Oregon said...

So much for the notion of allowing negative runs.

Exposremains said...

I could see them being no-hit today.

nats guy said...

Get out the fork They are done for the day. Well done!!!!

Secret wasian man said...

FP says everything will be fine. Going to get my playoff tickets now

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The point is the team doesnt stink. Tgeir performance stinks.

We need bench the dead weight and get the hitters on the field and that includes Rendon.

Of course hire Wade Boggs s hitting coach. Listen to him this morning and his hitting approach parellel's mine.

Secret wasian man said...

Announcers are supposed to call the game. Homers can be homers. But don't use the spotlight to give a lecture to fans about how they should feel. We have a right to be upset at the way this team is playing. I am really pissed right now. And really getting turned off by this team and its YES MAN announcers.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Since Espi is SS I feel a homer coming.

NatsLady said...

1st inning our batting: .255
1st inning our pitching .244

Secret wasian man said...

Watching the game with the wife. She just asked me if anybody had an average over .200

Secret wasian man said...

There goes the no hitter. Suns coming out here. Goodbye

Amr Khani said...

And that is why Suzuki should be batting second. The hit was great, but he actually saw 5 pitches in the at bat. Lombardozzi swings at everything.

Secret wasian man said...

I guess all the injuries are why we can't execute a bunt. Sorry folks just SICK SICK Sick over this team. I'll stop goodbye

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Eeck teach bunting. You catch tge ball with the bat you never stab at the ball.

Okay one more. No need to panic Zach Duke tomorrow. Hhahaha

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Thanks Nats lady not sure how high we were because we have one a week since a hit in the first.

nats guy said...

I finally gotta say it, I don't like this team very much. I am still a Nats fan to the bone, but these guys are not very good or at least interesting. I loved last year almost as much as the Senators of 1969 but these guys have no life or Joie de vivre. Somethings missing and I don't think they can fix it this year. At best 2nd place 83-79 if they are very lucky. No playoffs for this team.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Voglesong with his 8.00 ERA should me we win tomorrow 11-4

Joe Seamhead said...

So Cincy led Philly by one in the 9th, Chapman comes in. Done deal, right? Wrong. First he blows the save giving up a HR. Then he gives up another HR and loses the game.

NatsLady said...

Sorry to rain on your parade. Nats very good at bunting.
Where league average is 100, Nats are 260.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

We can't steal crap, but SD has no problem all.

Eck is innocent on that one.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

All major leaguers are bad at bunting. they think tgey are to good.

But is that tgeir batting average or percentage of successful sac bunts. If the former that would be a little low but tge secobd it would be terrivly low.

Should be successful for sac bunts at least 50% but in realuty more like 67%

NatsLady said...

OTOH, Nats not so good at sac flies. Only 8 all season. For comparison, Reds have 17.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

4 of the 8 were in the Saturday and Sunday games in Pittsburgh I was at.

baseballswami said...

Just got home from a seemingly endless work day. I am watching every minute of the rest of this game . I hated the off season. Sure we suck right now, but things can change. I love baseball- we are not playing very well right now but I will find something to enjoy- even if it frustrates me to death. Does anyone else feel we only have a chance when Bryce plays? Surely that cannot be actually true.

NatsLady said...

Zimmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!

David Proctor said...

ZIM!!!

MicheleS said...

ZIMBOMB! we are back in this ball game!!!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

A poor change up hung over the middle pulled for homers.

Others need to do the same thing instead of wimping around

baseballswami said...

I found something to enjoy very quickly.

NatsLady said...

Will see if I can find that pct, MNF.

When Nats bunt for a hit they succeed 26% of the time (11th in MLB).. Very small sample size (only 6 hits).

They have 16 sac bunts (11th in MLB). Pitchers have 13 of the sac bunts, 5th in MLB same for NL).

Not sure where to look for failed sac bunts... will check some stat sites.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=p&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=0&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=17,d

NatsLady said...

Curously, BBref thinks the Nats have 7 hits and 16 sac bunts. They must judge differently as to when someone is "bunting for a hit."

EmDash said...

Raining in Atlanta/ game delayed. They should call it now just to be safe. *g*

NatsLady said...

Raining again in Atlanta. OK, call the game, like right now, when it's 2-1 in favor of the Dodgers. :)

EmDash said...

Cashner has a surprisingly good hitting approach for a pitcher.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Fast ball over the heart of yhe plate and Espi swings through. ZThat is what we are complaining about why does that happen so often?

Rizzo question for you. How do you justift batters 5-7 having averages of

131
118
163

You cant find hitters any where?

Secret wasian man said...

Way to fight back guys. Lets go. Umpire hates Suzuki I think

Secret wasian man said...

I think the ump hates Harren also

baseballswami said...

I don't know but my question is this; at what point is Espi's supposedly superior defense just not worth it? Is he really saving soooo many runs for us that it is truly worth it? When I watch him I see nothing close, nothing improving. Do you? He is not just hitting it right at someone and getting unlucky, it's really awful. Does this just go on and on? Trust me, I really want the kid to figure it out. Did any of you hear what ALR said about him yesterday?

Drew said...

Before he can think of the Mendoza line, I'd like to see Espinosa catch Adam Dunn.

Dunn is hitting .170, Espinosa .165.

EmDash said...

Suzuki has been surprisingly irritable lately - wouldn't be surprised if he is getting too banged up and needs an off day. Maybe Solano tomorrow? It's going to be a weird game anyway.

jeffwx said...

Lombo Lombo Man,
I want to be a Lombo Man

David Proctor said...

What did ALR say Swami? I did not hear.

EmDash said...

His defense would make him valuable if he was a .240ish hitter, I think. He was useful last year, no matter how frustrating he could be to watch. As he is now, though, not so much.

baseballswami said...

ALR said that Danny thinks his problems are physical and can be solved by hitting a million balls and he just won 't believe it's mental. Surprisingly frank.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

espi's first half full swing he was solid. But all stsr game on 2011 he started swing at terrible pitches lets hitable ones go, hits hitable weakly. occasinally getting a base hit.

Why the change?

They say he woks hard. Learned long ago hard work is not as important as accurate work (I know my ryping refects otherwise ( but i blame the little key board, fat fingers and eyes cwho barely can read the screen))

Early 2011 Espi welcome, present Espi not.

What is his WAR if it is positive than WAR is useless.

baseballswami said...

Glad to see Lombo going back to his on the ground, situational hitting like last year. Hope he gets in the groove. Criticized for being a slap hitter but sometimes contact is what you need. He can get on base or move a runner to set things up for the stronger hitters.

NatsLady said...

Well, according to sabermetric stats, Danny's baserunning and defense are not enough to make up for lack of offense, at this point. However, he is not the worst 2B in the league, Martin Prado, Keppinger and Rickie Weeks are worse (not that that is saying much.) That is if you go by WAR. If you go by Win Probability Added, Danny is 15th out of 22 qualified 2B. His WPA is -.36, meaning he has lost 36% of a game. In contrast, Brandon Phillips is 2.01 meaning he has won 2 entire games by himself. ;)

It is difficult to compare him to shortstops because he has not played that position enough this year. Ruben Tejada has the lowest batting average of shortstops. .211

NatsLady said...

Danny's WAR is -0.4 by fangraphs.

NatsLady said...

MNF why don't you use a regular keyboard? I have a wireless keyboard so I can move it around.

David Proctor said...

Bad Dan Haren showed up today...

jeffwx said...

well maybe we could have won yesterday

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

How much do people thinkEspi missed the ball hit his direction by? 3 inches over his head?

baseballswami said...

Too bad ALR, Tyler Moore, Zim and Chris Marrero cannot all play first base. And Bryce -- stop running into walls. We need you in the line up and in left field. Haren melting down big time. I hate it when that happens, especially with two outs.

jeffwx said...

espi to the bench..good backup util guy

NatsLady said...

Haren can barely walk. His back must be KILLING him.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Nats Jack i am not getting rid of espi just stay on the bench until needed.

Drew said...

As we consult the movie listings:

In Harrisburg, Rendon tripled again, walked again and knocked in two more runs. His .350 batting average leads the Eastern League. Rendon now has 22 RBIs in 29 games.

There's also an intriguing subplot at 2b. Remember Rick Hague? Looks like Rendon has lit a bonfire under his old Rice teammate.

Hague now has five consecutive multi-hit games. He's raised his average from .167 to .271.

Looks like Hague wants to get back into the equation.

Joe Seamhead said...

Any comments on Tyler Moore's throw to the plate?

NatsLady said...

Seamhead, as noted above, Moore is not an outfielder. Need Harper back. Werth too.

David Proctor said...

Tyler's defense gave up the double that created that play at the plate too. An OF cuts that off. Moore was too slow to the ball. Should've been a single.

The throw was high, but again, he's a 1B.

Joe Seamhead said...

Nice catch by Venable.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

It look Espi just missed Alonso's hit. Just wondering if his 3 inches missing in height made it a double. would Desi have caught it. End up 3 more runs score when not called.

Carp says Moore cant buy a break. The other team is fielding better than we are.

baseballswami said...

NatsJack- just seems like Espi should not have a job security force field around him just in case Desi needs a break. He can't become the utility guy because then he would hit worse. Although I don't feel that his one day break was long enough. That shoulder probably could use more of a break. So could his head. Venable just robbed Tyler Moore, who is crushing the ball. I know this game appears out of reach, but I would like to see some fight .

jeffwx said...

I think Lombo could bat 100 points higher than espi with the bad rotator cuff if SL played 5 or 6 games per week.

But still think we are one more bat away from the playoffs. Could be Rendon in August,

Lou Brock is no longer available but he was the guy that put the Cards over the top in 64 after the cubs gave him away.

NatsLady said...

I don' think it's the rotator cuff--that would lead to a bunch of weakly hit gronders and shallow popups. Danny isn't seeing the ball, period, like he just doesn't know where it is. I would be curious if he is hitting it in batting practice.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

What does Davey need to see to say enough is enough.

Swung 3 times . Missed by at least 6 inches each time.

No one should be that bad. One swing and miss is one thing. All 3 that poirly is unbelievable.

Joe Seamhead said...

1 for 23, 11 K's? That's Danny's last 23 AB's. Ouch! I'd have to say that doesn't smell too good.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

3 more swing and misses for his stat sheet for Espi.

jeffwx said...

Problem is MNL, Odds are Werth will on the DL a bit...need an OF bat that can replace him...Like I said previously Lou Brock or MIKEY

Wait HROD!

baseballswami said...

Everyone else's at bats are looking much better now. Lombo got some results, Moore crushing balls being caught. Espi's at bats are not unlucky- the are.....well, I have no words. HRod in the game- I want triple digits!!

David Proctor said...

Another error. At least this game is already over so it won't hurt.

baseballswami said...

What is MNL??

NatsLady said...

ALR lost his focus. Davey should just move Moore over to 1B, put Eury in and call it a game.

jeffwx said...

Miss NL, yeah, would love to see Lombo play more 2B and send Despinosa down...I think while painful, he'd gain a lot in the long run and bring up Rendon...tough times require difficult measures..but if your hitting is broke, good to do something about it.

jeffwx said...

MNL= Miss Nats Lady....I want to be a gentleman blogger

David Proctor said...

Watch Cabrera steal home now.

jeffwx said...

but grew up in the rough side of Queen so it takes a lot of work for me...not in my DNA

MNL, Like

Lady, Miss Nats Lady, you bring me up when I'm down...

Just wonderin' said...

Any else think the Shark should have just kept on running past third and headed for home? With Espinosa up next, the odds were probably better that the Padres throw the ball away on the play at home. At least that way he woulda had a chance above zero.

NatsLady said...

See, FP, that was the strategy all along, let him steal third and get him at the plate. :) :)

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Espi doesnt pretend to fake behind Cabrerra.

Hrod all in all didnt let error hurt him.

Now please no unearned runs.

Nats106 said...

Espinosa is 1 for 23? If he gets another hit he'll be like a broken clock. Right twice a day.

SCNatsFan said...

Either this is a mediocre team or Johnson is a mediocre manager. Glad to see the corporate line is to stay the course and hope things get better. I know at my job if we were expected to do great things and we continued to put out an average product we'd just stay the course.

Just wonderin' said...

LaRoche losing concentration?

David Proctor said...

This is embarrassing.

baseballswami said...

Awww. How sweet. Who says we can't be nice when we are getting creamed? Stealing at will now. They know HRod can 't handle it. Anyone else feel like a storm is approaching in the organization? Some major , cataclysmic changes? Sure does not seem like some situations can continue. This is ridiculous now. Scouting report exposing a major vulnerability.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

cabrerra 18 steals Nats 20

NatsLady said...

Well, you knew a wild pitch was coming... Just by the odds.

jeffwx said...

When Healthy this is a good team....just one bat away from greatness

NatsLady said...

And a walk. Now Henry will strike out the next guy, just watch.

David Proctor said...

The bases aren't loaded yet NatsLady.

NatsLady said...

Good point, DP.

jeffwx said...

I like Henry, he makes blowouts fun

NatsLady said...

See--as predicted. That's just Henry being Henry.

Nats106 said...

What a dispiriting road trip. With the Phillies sudden resurgence, it will be like the old Kasten days in my beloved Sec 106. Loaded with loaded phillies fans. Just great.

baseballswami said...

Maybe some situations have to hit rock bottom before anything can change?? You know , it's not the well contested losses that bother me. It's bad baseball. Time for a pride check. Score at least one more run to show you have not quit.

baseballswami said...

NJ- that just blows my mind. I mean, if you watch-- oy.

Eugene in Oregon said...

After a game like this -- an embarrassment -- you need a veteran to call a team meeting and remind the players about pride, concentration, etc. But since Jayson Werth isn't with the team, who steps up? Adam LaRoche doesn't seem like the type. Ryan Zimmerman should, but may not feel like he can given his own woes. Ian Desmond, maybe?

jeffwx said...

IMHO, they don't need to change much...
Bring down Espi, Bring up Kob/Rendon, i don't know
Get a good backup OF so we don't have to play infielders in the OF everytime Bryce runs into something or Jason needs more metal in his body

Nats106 said...

You mean sink to the level of this team 3 years ago? That rock bottom? Suddenly doing yard work at game time seems so much more palatable.

baseballswami said...

Maybe we need those great, big, Flintstone bats!!! I am letting it go, folks, finding the humor. It can't stay this way - really, it can't. BRYCE AND JAYSON COME BACK!!!!!!!!!

SCNatsFan said...

Eugene how do you hold a meeting when you have guys like Moore and Espinosa who don't deserve to be here. The meeting should have been held long ago.

NatsLady said...

Henry has exactly as many strikeouts as walks. He walked a guy, so you knew he was going to strike out a guy. Balance, baby, balance.

David Proctor said...

The last time there was a team meeting, we won 5 straight and 7 of 8. Maybe we need another?

NatsNutty said...

At the rate the Nats are non-playing, we better pray they win the NL East because, if they don't, they sure won't win the Wild Card and Davey's dream of "World Series or Bust" will be just that, a "Bust."

jeffwx said...

and only 1 WP! the WHIP, not so good.

David Proctor said...

Positives: Zimmerman and Lombardozzi.

jeffwx said...

Lombo, Lombo Man....why are you not starting...

mick said...

Welcome to crappy baseball gang. Haren is a 500 loser, as soon as it gets to 3-2, he just stinks the place up like most losing pitchers. Not that it matters because we are the worst hitting team in baseball. If Braves lose its hard to believe Nats would be only 1 and a half back. it feels like 7 back.Remember, FP, Bobby C and ray all assumed the Nats would either win all 4 or at least 3

This team is done in 2013 for playoffs, what a DC bust

baseballswami said...

I totally agree on the outfield thing. It does not work at all to put young guys out there who play the infield. Not fair to anyone at all. Bernie is fine. If Jayson and Bryce could just stay on the field.........on twitter there is a new hash tag--- #freeRendon. Lombo with a three hit day-- silver lining.

David Proctor said...

At least we're showing some life.

mick said...

Lombo is not starting because Davey is a stubborn old man, plain and simple. Espinosa is one of the worst players at bat since the team came here in 2005.

David Proctor said...

Lombardozzi has started pretty regularly for about 3 weeks and has performed almost as badly as Espinosa. However today, he's been much better.

mick said...

If Nats did make playoffs, how many here would want to see Haren pitch, let alone in the dugout??? I rest my case

baseballswami said...

Mick-- how many games do you feel back of the rotation guys will win? Ten? I have thought about this a lot. Aren't four/ five guys often right around five hundred?

jeffwx said...

yes, Bernie is a great util OF with speed for the late innings.
Hey, Davey, play the hot bats once in a while...what do you got to lose (excuse the grammer, MNL)...Lombo can play until Rendon is ready to stay

David Proctor said...

Haren wouldn't pitch in the playoffs. It would be Stras, Gio, Zim, Det.

NatsLady said...

Belisario is HOPELESS. DFA that guy willya??? Here comes Kenley Jansen who lost the game yesterday. What are you doing, Donnie?????? Oh, sorry, wrong game.

mick said...

swami true, but at least most back rotation guys do not lose to an inferior team

also, how are you Espi fans defending 1 for 31???????

jeffwx said...

Sometimes, it helps your hitting to play a position you know rather than worrying about what the heck am I playing LF for.

David Proctor said...

The Padres have been one of the hottest teams in baseball coming into this series.

David Proctor said...

Sucks that Haren had to totally implode or we'd be winning this game.

jeffwx said...

And the Nats are on their way back.
Desi....get warm..

baseballswami said...

David- Lombo has been showing improvement in his at bats. Not always results, but it's been coming. And I feel that things would be better if everyone just stopped all the talk of playoffs and the Barves. Maybe they could just win a series first. ALR with 16!!!! Another silver lining.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

We cant afford 1 bad inning the way we are hitting, Haren had 2.

Haren didnt get the memo.

We have obly lost 2 games when we score more tgan 2 So just keep Padres to 2 as I knew we could score three.

NatsLady said...

Moore with another hard hit ball that finds a fielder.

David Proctor said...

Moore hit that ball hard. He's been robbed twice.

Joe Seamhead said...

Two on, two out and Justin Upton K's to end the threat. Still 2-1 Dodgers.

jeffwx said...

This team is good..Any takers for a playoff bet.
They'll be there...the pitching is too good and the lineup is fixable.

baseballswami said...

And Tyker Moore up with runners on again and two outs. Kid is always in that hot seat. He has hit the ball hard today with no results- great catch by Venable cost us a run. Glad to see the offense fighting. Now don 't give any right back!!

jeffwx, I'm with you. Just hang above .500 until we get hot. It will happen. I hope it's nothing serious with Det, though, because the options in Syracuse are not great.

A balk? Really?

baseballswami said...

MNL--- trade?? We have spare parts left to deal. Not looking for an ace, just a 4/5.

jeffwx said...

yep,NL, Det is crucial component

I am surpirised tgey didnt walk Espi as with the bases loaded he would K.

Next inning he might lead off with a hit, but no hitting recently with sone one on.

mick said...

Jeffwx, I would take the bet and would be glad to lose it. However, I am not sure Nats will 80 right now

NatsLady said...

Don't know, haven't thought about it. Would have to see who might need what we have.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Mattheus looks really rusty so far

mick said...

I fear Nats will be swept by Giants and return home 2-3 under 500 and Nats Park could get ugly

David Proctor said...

Even if we get swept by the Giants, we won't be 2-3 games under .500.

NatsLady said...

Doesn't seem like Mattheus has it today. OK, Cat, how you gonna fix this? Mattheus had that one terrible inning last year and then he was excellent.

jeffwx said...

ok, mick, how bout an O'Douls ;)

mick said...

one day, one guy pitches well, the next he stinks, one day one guy hits the next day he goes 0-4 and there is nobody picking the slack up... classic sub 500 team

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

On cubs broadcast they said when bases are loaded no out average is 2.24 runs will be scored

NatsLady said...

Not likely to get swept by the Giants. They are a mess right now. Wish we had Werth for RF, but I don't blame him for not wanting to aggravate his hamstring in the cold weather.

mick said...

jeffwx, you got it, if I'm right how about a Corona light? If your right, I will get a case of O'Douls for you

lol

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

1 down 1.24 to go.

Cubs by the way score in that inning.

baseballswami said...

Guy almost never pitches. Bound to happen. The starters go deeper, the bullpen gets out of sync.

David Proctor said...

Just the way today has gone.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Now 2 .24 to go.

Thinking of Anthony Mason's famous quote

"The ship be sinking"

NatsLady said...

There is a graphic with that info,

That table is as of 2005, might be a little different by now.

oopss, I meant Micheal Ray Richardson

Davey should have let Henry bat. :)

jeffwx said...

I'm a DC guy (Diet Coke)...not looking good for a comeback...frustrating game

David Proctor said...

Yikes, Mattheus.

jeffwx said...

what's the probability of scoring 5 runs when the bases are loaded

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I will have to look at my computer this table is not readable to me.

mick said...

Nats can not even beat the teams they are suppose to. So explain to me the path to posts season? I am already tired of Davey's BS in the post game

lol

NatsLady said...

Brandon League in for the 6 out save.

Search for "Expected Runs Matrix."

Things to look forward to in October:
1) RGIII playing
2) Season 4 of the walking dead
3) Nationals early hot stove?

David Proctor said...

I understand people being upset and frustrated, but I feel like some people come on here and do nothing but spew venom. Maybe I have a thin skin, but if you think the team has no chance of righting the ship and making the postseason, why do you bother watching the team? If the team is THAT awful and unenjoyable to watch, why come on here to whine?

I just don't get it. My two cents.

baseballswami said...

Use the rest of the game to work on things. You know, if we had lost the first two and won the second two, we would feel differently about this. Things getting waaay out of control now. Stay around five hundred, get some guys back. Hang around, go on a run later. Funny how it has been the offense recently and today it 's pitching. That four runs would have looked like a hundred to JZim.

NatsLady said...

DP, yeah, I don't get that either. You wait all winter for baseball, finally it's here, why would you complain? So they didn't hand the Nats the World Series on a platter--what a shock. Other teams come to play also.

NatsLady said...

Atlanta got to the Dodgers' bullpen, which is PUTRID.

baseballswami said...

For the most part, posters have been pretty reasonable today considering. Rays scored six in the ninth yesterday!! It could happen! And the Padres are not a bad team. I believe they had their way with our neighbors in Baltimore before we arrived.

SonnyG10 said...

This is just one of those games you want to get over and forget about. Might as well lose 20 to 4 or more; it still only counts as one loss. Need to get Werth, Desi and Harper back in the lineup. I'm surprised we got four runs with this lineup.
