Espinosa out with chip in right wrist

Add another name to the long list of Nationals injuries.

Second baseman Danny Espinosa has a loose bone chip in his right wrist and is expected to miss several days with the disabled list not out of the question. Davey Johnson said it’s related to the sore wrist that kept him out for four games in mid-April after he took a Paul Maholm pitch off his hand against the Braves.

Espinosa missed four games after being hit on April 14, but returned in the Nats’ series that weekend on April 20 against the Mets. Espinosa apparently continued to experience pain, but opted to play through it up until now.

“The problem is that it’s a broken bone,” Johnson said. “The problem is the inflammation and pain from the broken bone. I know what that’s like.”

“The best way I feel is to have him rest it for a couple of days, no hitting and no throwing, and see if he can get by the discomfort in his right wrist.”

Feel better, Danny,

What a bunch of pure unadulterated BS!!! How do the suggest fixing his shoulder.

Everything is wonderful and he will be back in time for the World Series.

I just lost respect for Mike Rizzo and Dave Johnson. I can't believe that they think we'll actually believe this BS.

How convenient. How surprising. Unfortunately, this "news" is too late for the team. They have already been hurt. Any time on the DL will be too short for Espinosa.

Take your time and heal, Danny. We need you healthy.

Espi is just trying to stay in the Majors. Second time he's pulled this BS. At least Harper hits home runs when he is in pain.

Henry has 9 lives and Espi has 9 lies.

Not hurt as much as by Zim's erratic throws ... and last season luckily the cortisone shots worked for a seriously injured shoulder ... else he would have been an even more enormous hole in the #3 slot.

So, soon the forget ... sheessh ... shaking head ruefully at really poor fans!

Getting tired of hearing about guys toughing it out and hurting the team as a result.

Jim Palmer used to bellyache about every little twinge. But you never had to wonder if he was hurting the team because he was hiding an injury.

Wonder if Danny was HRodded

Hmm Rendon getting impacted wisdom teeth removed it seems. That's a few days out at least.

Get 100% heal. Probably is making his hitting when he makes contact weaker.

Not by the hair of your chinny chin chin ...

They didn't put him on the DL ... yet. They want to see if he can play with the pain ... with some remedial help. Why? Because he's in the middle of the defense and right now their best fielder.

Hopefully, if the do decide to go that way they send him off to get both the wrist and the rotator cuff fixed. And not one excluding the other.

Rendon with wisdom teeth? Hey I'm an oral surgeon finally something I can post intelligently about.

Peric I don't know why hey would wait on Danny, he's shown he can't hit with the pain. Don't know why we wouldn't want to get someone here in case we need the body.

His glove.

SCNatsfan, that's what I think it is. The phantom injury to give another excuse. Give him time away.

No, I believe them. What was "phantom" was the fact they probably already knew about it and why they weren't upset with his offensive performance. But as Rizzo stated it didn't and hasn't affected the glove.

But it impacts Danny. He wants to hit in the worst way. The second checkup is on him.

I still think he should just go ahead and get both surgeries and be ready to go next spring.

SCNatsFan said...

Peric no matter what his glove they cannot put up with a .170 hitter and you know that. If you think they aren't upset with his performance at the plate then I believe you are mistaken. He is possibly the worst in all of MLB.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

He's never shown he can hit lefthanded. Thats hard to change as poor as he sees the ball from the left side.

The Espi supporters like Peric are already using this as an excuse.

Like that guy that has the most comments dumped by the blog administrator, Danny, the Drama Queen, has an excuse.

My question is, who backs up Desmond at short? Certainly not Kobernus.

Isn't it more a Team Player who reports his injury in order NOT to hurt the team?

I don't appreciate players who play 'hurt' especially when their playing hurt hurts the team.

Less Platu said...

I don't call Espinosa chipping his wrist last year. And last year he led the major leagues in Strikeouts. Hurt or not -- this kid doesn't hit.

Again, Danny selfishly hurt this team since his wrist got injured.

Lombo was the "day-to-day" fill-in at SS, meaning that if Desmond only needed a day off to rest, Lombo was the guy. Espi, OTOH, was the long-term fill-in @ SS last yr, which he did when Desmond went on the DL. So there u have it, Lombo is the immediate SS replacement.

And he totally sucks as a shorrstoo.

I do feel bad for Danny. He's not had much of a chance to play healthy...didn't he have a broken hamate bone to recover from, before last season? Then the cuff, late last year. I hope he just gets everything fixed, and has a fighting chance to be a ballplayer, next spring. If he'll consent to being coached....

Get better, Danny... You're using up most of your chances....

NatsJack in Florida said...

The thing Danny needs to get fixed is his eyes. He does not recognize pitches at all.

Espinosa is now my least favorite player of all time, replacing Barry Bonds who replaced Mark McGwire. Lord, know how many games he has cost his team while hiding injuries. I never want to hear his name agin on this team, but I'm afraid I'll have to. Espinosa, what a schmuck. I think thats what I'll call him from now on.

IKN8wxU2 said...

Why do you think Espinosa hid this injury? FP just said in the broadcast that the announcing crew has known about this injury for weeks.

I'm amazed how willing people are to draw adverse inferences against Danny and Nats management and medical staff.

Mac Guire said...

Espinosa is now helping the team by being out. I hope we're seeing the last of Espinosa finally. He does not seem to be playing better this year anyway than how he's been doing so far. Let's say he comes back next spring after getting surgery this year... Oops! No more Davey next year! This means it will be hard to find Espinosa in the starting lineup any more. There aren't many managers who are willing to put up with his suckiness.

There's a good reason every baseball player in America still knows the name Wally Pipp.

Yeah kind of like the hypocrite in Florida and his pals who won't admit that Espinosa has a real injury not a phantom one. And that he deserves just as much consideration as Mr. "hole in the #3 hole" Zim last year.

Mike Rizzo makes the consistent starting lineup. The manager fills out the lineup card. Back to that once Davey is gone.

I know his average is down, but Walters played a nifty shortstop in spring training. He has some pop, too.

That said, it sure seems Kobernus has earned a shot.

and broken wrists should be taken seriously. They can heal improperly and then you are really screwed.
