Zim progressing but will DH early on

Associated Press
Ryan Zimmerman has ramped up his throwing program in recent days.
VIERA, Fla. -- His surgically repaired shoulder gaining strength each day, Ryan Zimmerman has ramped up his throwing program.

Zimmerman played catch this morning from 75 feet and expects to advance to 90 feet tomorrow, gradually working his way back to the point he'll be able to participate fully in exhibition games.

Game action remains a ways off. Manager Davey Johnson said he doesn't expect Zimmerman to play third base during the first two weeks of the Grapefruit League schedule. That would still give the veteran ample time to work his way up to 100 percent for Opening Day.

"He knows what he needs to do," Johnson said. "And I think if you talk to him, he'll say he's right on track to get to where he wants to be Opening Day. But what I saw today, it was really good. I liked everything I saw."

Continuing the Rendon speculation, from a couple of threads ago...
The reason I see him playing here, as opposed to being traded, is affordability. F Zim stays at 3b, then trading a MI (Espy) to use AR yields 3 years of controllability, right? And shaves several million $ from the payroll, over that period. If you can then add Skole's big LH bat at 1b, in '15... That'd be a lot of realitively cheap offense, no? Of course, the big "if" is Rendon keeping himself in the field..... But I'm struck by how easy it's become to be optimistic about absolutely everything, these days.... {=^D

Good luck, RZ! Take it carefully, 'cause we need you this year, we need you healthy and strong! Maybe--daddy-strong? Saw a hint on Twitter...

Lots of happy talk from Davey. But of course Morse and Storen were on track to play on Opening Day last year, and we all know when they finally took the field. While Zim took part in defensive drills, he did not throw in them. Did any of our spies down there see his 75 foot tosses? Can you give us a sense whether his throws look normal?

I realize it's early, but there are only 40 days till Opening Day. I'm going to worry about this until I hear something more specific about his progress than "he knows what he needs to do to be ready" because actually he doesn't. He hasn't had this surgery before and has no idea how the recovery will go.

tryouts for Rendon?

If Rendon is the real deal then Rizzo will find a space for him in the lineup, leave no doubt about that. He's too cheap to trade away.

SCNatsfan, cheap and controllable!

Section 222 - I saw a 15 second video clip of Zimmerman tossing the ball around on TV yesterday. FWIW it appears that he doesn't have that horrific hitch in his motion but he was just soft tossing.

I'll be real interested to see is a normal throwing motion returns .. can't wait to see him air it out.
