Harper on SI cover again

Courtesy Sports Illustrated
VIERA, Fla. -- How big have Bryce Harper and the Nationals become around baseball? Big enough to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated's spring training preview issue.

Harper graces the cover of this week's magazine, standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial holding a bat behind his shoulders, the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol dome in the background. The headline for Tom Verducci's cover story reads: "What does Bryce Harper have in mind for his encore? Some seriously monumental numbers."

The photo was taken early in the morning on January 27, while Harper was in town for that afternoon's NatsFest at the Washington Convention Center. With temperatures in the 20s, the young outfielder had to bundle up between takes, ultimately appearing in full uniform without any long sleeves underneath.

It's only the second time a member of the Nationals has been featured on SI's cover. Stephen Strasburg appeared in June 2010 shortly after making his big-league debut, under the headline: "National Treasure."

If you're worried about SI's infamous cover jinx spelling doom for Harper, keep in mind he's already been featured on the front of the magazine before. Four years ago, a then-16-year-old Harper was the subject of a cover story, dubbed "Baseball's Chosen One."

Things have worked out just fine for him since.

More so than anything else since baseball returned to DC, this one photo captures the concept that Washington has a baseball team.

Harper spits on the jinx. Go Bryce! Go Nats!!!

Very nice! At first I thought he was photoshopped on there.

@acomak: ESPN's story says 2 sources "identified Gonzalez as the only Bosch client named thus far who did not receive performance-enhancing drugs."

Innocent until proven guilty and maybe just maybe Gio would be the 1st player who really was telling the truth!

article says Gio aka Gladiator received weightloss products of dubious value but not illegal PEDs sounds to me like it could have been his father

I'm popping open a drink for Gio and Bryce's SI cover!

Good for Gio he deserves it, I am still of the opinion that he should sue Miami times for slander. They had absouletly no right to publish his name and now they have affected his entire career for absouletly no reason.

This should but probably won't be a lesson to the instant cynics in these precincts, and appropriate vindication for the grown ups who suspended judgment until some real evidence was in.

I think most of us here (Tconstant excluded) either believed Gio, or decided to wait for more information. Just goes to show you to always be patient and stick with your gut sometimes.

Good video. I'm surprised Valencia and a couple others haven't been cleared.

Again, that New York Times article really was an eye opener but from the start I felt there was nothing credible.

To have TJ Quinn say those words is something you don't hear every day....ESPN backtracking!

Mark Z: Wasn't Ryan Zimmerman on an SI cover a couple of years back celebrating the 'Class of 2005' draftees? Since he was among a number of players drafted that year, maybe that doesn't count as being 'featured'?

Can't recall, sec3, but my Chicago baseball buddy is morphing into my Denver baseball buddy, so I may have a summer road trip in my future. :-)
