VIDEOS: The Baseball Show this week

On last night's The Baseball Show, Mark and Rob Carlin talked about Bryce Harper's upcoming visit with Dr. James Andrews. The star outfielder is getting a second opinion on his swollen left knee on Monday and his status moving forward is in question.

In addition to experiencing a setback with his knee, Harper also lost power at his home last night. The rain sweeping through the region that postponed Thursday night's game against the Mets, also shut the electricity off in Harper's building. It was an all around tough day for the 20-year-old.

Mark and Rob also discussed the return of Jayson Werth and how he can provide a spark for the Nationals' struggling offense.

I think you'e doing a great job, Mark! It's so fun to see you turn into a solid TV guy! Except you can write, too. Thanks for posting this.

Someone yesterday was lamenting that the Braves are playing four games against the Dodgers, but will miss Kershaw. True enough. But we missed Puig, so I guess we're even. Hope the kid stays hot all weekend. What a story!

At least Harper is getting a taste of life on the East Coast, where all the infrastructure resembles that of a third world country.

I saw Puig in his debut and he's the only player outside of the pitchers that have excited the crowds since Matt Kemp just hasn't done much all season and is once again injured. This kid may be the spark that saves Mattingly's career.

On Kershaw, he just got outdone'd by Jason Marquis. Yep, hard to believe.

Ryu pitching tonight. Go Big Blue!

Trout not fielding so great--interesting story.

(Some) people saying Harper should have been left in CF. I don't agree, let the pro (Span) do the "heavy lifting and running," let Harper concentrate on offense. Plus he will get plenty of chances in LF.

Nice videos and very good editing and production. Maybe MASN should sell to NBC-Comcast as you can see the difference in non-game content between the 2 networks. Most of it starts with spending the money which MASN won't do.

I have noticed that MASN Orioles does have better graphics and research than what is shown on the MASN Nationals. I'm not sure but I believe MASN Orioles doesn't have a sideline reporter but they do have a rotating 4 man game crew with Palmer, Bordick, Thorn and Hunter which has to be sizeable in salaries. Aren't the Nats paying for all of that?

Oddities of the day (lots of 'em today)

- Seven players on the Cards had two hits including starting pitcher Shelby Miller who went 2-for-4 with a home run.

- Eight Diamondbacks have attempted to steal a base this season. Six of them have been caught more often than they’ve been successful.

- Eleven different Blue Jays have started games this season, seven of whom have ERAs over 5.00.

- Ian Kennedy gave up ten runs, all earned, in just four innings

- The Cubs have five starters who have started eight or more games. The pitcher with the highest ERA is the highest paid and the pitcher with the lowest ERA is the lowest paid.

- In the last 23 games, the Royals have four home runs.

- Jonny Gomes entered the day hitting .173 with 18 hits on the season -- and got four hits last night

- The Mariners one-hit the Yankees over 8 of the 9 innings -- but in the third inning the Yanks got eight hits in a row -- all of them off of Aaron Harang.

- last night 39-year-old Jamey Carroll led off for the Twins. His on-base percentage is .278. He played third base. His slugging percentage is .245.

- Domonic Brown has 18 home runs in 228 plate appearances this season. In his previous 492 plate appearances covering the last three seasons, he had hit 12.

- The Marlins are 3-7 in their last 10 games -- which raises their pct to .267

I'm quite sure NBC-Comcast would love to have the rights to Nats games. But that's between Bud Seelig and @#$# Angelos, isn't it?

Years ago when I was in grad school in NJ one of my housemates was a nursing student from Africa. We were in the house alone when the power went out. She was panic-stricken, while I calmly went to the kitchen and grabbed a flashlight and some candles. Then I said, "but doesn't the power go out in your country?" She said, "No, we have generators."

I may have missed it, but who is the back-up SS right now? I have terrible nightmares of Chad Tracy trying to turn a double play.

Section 222-- I am thinking we better start watching the Phils before we even attempt to catch the Barves. We are-- ahem-- behind them at the moment. And as for the back up SS discussion, again, does someone know something about Desi that we should know?? Should Desi get dinged up in a game, Lombo , Kobernus or Rendon could at least hold the fort there to complete the game. The organization would already be on the phone making arrangements for the next game if it was serious. They could always recall Espi. If Haran is pitching it won't matter because the batters are hitting it to the outfield.

sjm308 said...

Don - totally a guess here but I would think Lombo. I also think Rendon has played games at SS in college and maybe even a couple in the minors.

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said...

So when do you think they will announce tonights game will be postponed?

Don said...

Yikes. Lombo has played a total of 20 games at SS in his pro career and none since 2011.

baseballswami said...

It's not like it would be for a season. Maybe a game- and how many actual plays? Is that really at the top of our problem list right now??? Seems like there are many more much bigger problems ahead of that probability.

NatsLady said...

They can't recall Espy for a couple of weeks (not eligible). Might need an Izturis type if Desi goes down.

JD said...

Swami,

If Espinosa is really not coming back this year I think it behooves us to get someone who can play the position competently for more than a couple of games. You don't want Rendon and Lombo playing SS if something happens to Desi.

baseballswami said...

Really? With all the issues we have you actually worried about an imaginary problem?? Oh- I think the game has been called already!

baseballswami said...

I am worried that you are worried about that eventuality. For maybe the next ten days. With three competent infielders on the team.

Get Your Re(n)d On said...

Espinosa is on the 15 day DL retroactive to June 3, which means he can come off as early as June 18. He had the cortisone shot and will be resuming baseball activities soon. After the 18th, it looks like he'll be playing in AAA. So he's your backup shortstop as long as he's doing that. If Desmond happens to pull a hammy or something before the 18th, they'll get by however they can. I think instead of worrying who the backup SS is you should worry that they won't be able to find locker space for him when he shows up.

baseballswami said...

Yes-- game called- no schedule info yet.

Agreed. Starting with anemic hitting.

I hope with his lights out, Harps didn't run into any more walls!

swami,

Well you know Desi did miss about a month last year. stuff happens.

JD said...

Swami,

We are talking if Espi is not coming back this year. If he returns there's no issue.

baseballswami said...

After the next ten days Espi could be recalled at any moment. Before that there are many options. Anyone else could get hurt and we have band aids for short term, other plans can be made for longer term. This season, nothing would shock me. Starting to feel like one giant audition for minor leaguers and bench players. At least two days off allows for those who are dinged to really rest and not be tempted at the stadium to try to do too much. But it does maybe leave too much time to think. Nice for the guys that they do not even have to go to the park.

baseballswami said...

Just don't get why you see this particular thing as an issue with all the giant problems we already have.

#Nats announce day-night doubleheader vs. #Twins on Sunday. Original game remains at 1:35 p.m., makeup up game at 7:05 p.m.

So I understand they could use the existing starters on Sunday and then call someone up on Wednesday in Colorado-- or they could just use the " 26 th guy for double headers only" on Sunday. Plenty of time to mull it over.
