Instant analysis: Nats 5, Rockies 4

Associated Press
Ross Detwiler allowed three runs over five innings in his return from the DL.
Game in a nutshell: In the rubber game of the first series of a long road trip, the Nationals found themselves needing to rally from behind to beat a tough Rockies club. Ryan Zimmerman gave them an early 2-1 lead on his 10th homer of the season, but Colorado came right back to take a 3-2 lead off the just-reinstated Ross Detwiler. Still trailing in the seventh, the Nationals "rallied" to tie the game thanks to back-to-back balks called on reliever Wilton Lopez (who was subsequently ejected). They then took the lead in more conventional fashion, getting back-to-back doubles from Roger Bernadina and Zimmerman, then an RBI single from the red-hot Ian Desmond (who went 4-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games). Solid relief work from Craig Stammen, Xavier Cedeno and Drew Storen bridged the gap to Rafael Soriano, who did allow one run to score in the ninth before sealing his 17th save. Thus the Nationals head to Cleveland with a series victory, a winning record (33-32) and a deficit in the NL East that has now been trimmed to 5 1/2 games.

Hitting highlight: Obviously, Zimmerman's two-run homer and RBI double played crucial roles in today's win, but let's not ignore another stellar offensive performance from Desmond, who is on a sustained tear at the plate right now. With a 4-for-4 showing this afternoon, he extended his hitting streak to 15 games, a stretch during which he's batting .404. Overall, Desmond is now hitting .293 with a .483 slugging percentage that ranks third among all MLB shortstops (behind only Troy Tulowitzki and Jean Segura). Throw in the fact he hasn't been charged with an error in 46 games, and Desmond is starting to make a strong case for his second All-Star selection (and first actual game appearance).

Pitching highlight: In his first start in nearly a month, Detwiler (not surprisingly) looked a bit rusty. The Rockies jumped on him for a quick run in the first inning, then added two more in the fourth. Detwiler did find the strike zone with some consistency (51 of 77 pitches overall) and under normal circumstances would have been good to go deeper into the game. But given the fact he just returned from the DL and made only one rehab start in the minors, manager Davey Johnson didn't want to push the left-hander too much and thus ended his afternoon after only five innings.

Key stat: Since Wilson Ramos went back on the DL May 16, Kurt Suzuki is hitting .192 with a .234 on-base percentage and a .219 slugging percentage.

Up next: The road trip continues with a weekend series in Cleveland. Gio Gonzalez faces Justin Masterson in Friday's 7:05 p.m. opener at Progressive Field.

7 runners left on base today by Suzuki. Werth is scuffling also and LaRoche is no longer going oppo on those outside pitches.

Luckily enough of the others were hitting today.

Hmmmmm... Pirates down two starting pitchers (Wandy and now A.J. Burnett). Nothing is easy.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Also want to thank Balking Bob for doing what he does best!

terpman33 said...

That's how it should be done. A spark becomes a flame, a flame becomes a fire, and that fire turns into a raging inferno. Before we know it, the Nats will have a 10 game winning streak(maybe), and we'll all wonder what we were worried about. Lets show the AL what winning baseball is all about. GYFNG, BABY!!!

Eric said...

Burnett is down? That's gonna leave a mark...or unearth an Ohlendorf... ;)

Today we came back not once but twice. Nice!

David Proctor said...

There were some on here who said we would be swept by both the Twins and Rockies and be 10 games under .500. Well we've 2/3 against both. Just keep winning 2/3 and all will be well.

NatsLady said...

This game feels like last year in Toronto where one pitcher after another got hurt.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I still hope we go at least 6-3 on this series... Although I hope we sweep Cleveland and win the series against the Philth.... But I will take it 1 game at a time....

Good going Nats! 2 series in a row...

You for real David P? Interesting....

Werth had an off series, but he was scorching hot against the Twins. We'll see how he does against Cleveland.

Yep, I love me some double barrel going in the bullpen. That was so nice!

I love how the offense came from behind and picked up Jayson from that error.

Hope Bernadina is ok because I think Werth needs a day off sooner than later as does Span, LaRoche and Suzuki.

Exciting game. Atlanta isn't shaking in their boots yet, but they will be soon. We're just getting healthy Get Harper and Stras back, get Zimmerman to quit lolly gagging, make sure Davey takes his Alzheimer's meds, etc. and we'll be okay.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Jason needs to come out the clean up spot... He is looking at too many Ks....

I know, though, that this will happen when Harper comes back...

NatsLady said...

They are slowing learning to cope without Bryce. If he comes back healthy it will be a huge boost.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Here's what I like, Davey has 21 of his A team guys right now and he will get 3 back sooner or later from injury.

With a good bullpen, Davey can actually manage like last year.

I couldn't be a reporter, although I would love to be one... I'd be too distracted in the locker room(s) and pissed off if my team loses... I'd be asking al the wrong questions....

We have Gio, JZimm and Stras going in Cleveland. No reason to not win 2/3.

DaveBinMD said...

With Ramos having re-aggravated the Hamstring yet again, and Kurt ice cold at the plate, how about a few more starts for 'Onion'? I know his bat had been cold all season too, but he's hit in the past and he stroked a double yesterday, so maybe he'll heat-up with more starts.

Per Wikipedia:
"The surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland average 10 and 6 tornadoes per year."

I don't know how many of those are in the metro area, but it seems we get at least one confirmed touch down per year.

There's a strip of forest that was completely uprooted on the north side of the UMD campus during the '01 event. Now it's basically just a swamp.

That was the event where one touched down a few hundred yards from a friend's house while I was there. That was pretty scary, but the derecho last summer was worse.

Less Platu said...

I remember that one very well -- tornado went through one of the high rise dorms near Byrd - picked up a car with two sisters and carried them up and over the building -- both dead

How many arguments did I have with P***** in 2011 over Norris and his BA vs. OBP. He does take a ton of walks which is why the A's still play him. He may also figure it out one day with the bat.

Sorry to break in on the Orioles coverage here on Nats Insider but we have won two series in a row and did not lose the Mets Series as it ended 1-1.

With the 3 starters scheduled for Cleveland I am thinking we can win our 3rd series in a row and slowly but surely pick up ground on the Braves. Not what I had in mind at the beginning of the year but it is a new and exciting way to look at the year. We can be the little engine that could and slowly but surely move to the top of the mountain so all the good little girls and boys can get their just rewards.

Six innings into his sixth start at Harrisburg, Taylor Jordan has a 0.71 ERA at AA and he's about to go 5-0.

Earlier this year he was 2-1 at Potomac with a 1.24 ERA when he was promoted. Tonight's performance should drop his cumulative ERA below 1.00.

Jordan was a 9th round pick in 2009 out of Brevard CC in Florida. He was 9-4 at Hagerstown when he lost a year to Tommy John surgery.

I would guess they'll have him finish this year at Harrisburg.

His recovery, after those of JZim and Stras, gives me hope that Slingin' Sammy Solis will return to form.

Can anyone clear this up for me - I thought Espinosa was supposed to get his shoulder repaired and his 'broken wrist or hand' repaired. yet he playing? they're not considering bringing him back I hope?

AJ Cole tonight vs B-more's Frederick:

7 IP 4 hits 2 bb 0 runs 10 Ks

A J Cole has a 4 hit shutout going into the 7th for Potomac.
Also Billy Burns now has 33 SB's and has only been caught 3 times.

Did somebody step in something? It smells funny in here.

Espi had MRI's-- apparently no one is worried about the shoulder. He is on the DL - this is officially a rehab start. He got a magical cortisone shot and is clear to begin baseball activities- 3 innings today. It is unclear how long he will stay in AAA.

Drew- thanks for the excellent review. Very exciting.

Steve J. - they never said anything about Danny's shoulder. He got a cortisone shot in his wrist & was sent to AAA to work things out. As I said earlier, I hope it's quite a lengthy time.

Swami, will ignore with ease.

I am grateful for the Chief's info, NatsJack and others. Thanks.

LessPlatu, I wonder who you used to post as. Regardless, I know now to ignore all you post (and you post a lot) just like I learned for some others. I suggest we all do the same.

Great, unkyd! Hope it spreads.

Although he'll totally deny it.....no ones seems to be recognizing the unmistakable presence of one "Poppy McPoop". He's a master at stinking up a Nats blog and totally gets off on it.

oh man, what a child you are less whatever... go to bed. this is an awesome site and yes, i am new (as i think you are but could be wrong) but have some respect. we don't need you to read play by play of the O's or any other game. You may, MAY have some insight if you are a real baseball fan but you are not showing that to be true...enough of the hate.

Mark gets rid of a few trolls and this guy pops up. What a shame.

For those who regularly watch prospects. Thoughts on Billy Burns and Steven Souza? Big league futures? they both have great stats this year and also did last year.

There has not been one post about the actual Nats in a while. So how about Desi these days??? How many rehab assignments do you think Bryce will do? Nice series, right??

No Os updates after 8:56. Well done all!

Swami/JaneB - I'm with ya...

But in other Nats news - I wonder who gets sent down when SS comes back.... I keep forgetting that Mattheus is on the DL...

Seems like the BP is coming together... Also wondering about C Garcia....
