Game 68: Nats at Indians

What a game it was between these two last night. The Nationals smacked five homers off just eight hits, including Anthony Rendon's go-ahead shot to opposite field in the ninth. In his first game hitting second in the order, the rookie certainly made his case to stay. And after seeing his offense wake up after a bit of a lineup change, Davey Johnson is going with a similar look today.

The Nationals will have Stephen Strasburg (3-5, 2.54 ERA) back who was reinstated from the disabled list this morning. He last pitched on May 31 before leaving after two innings against the Atlanta Braves. This is his first time pitching at Progressive Field since the second start of his career. If you remember, Strasburg had issues with the mound condition that day, but still went 5 1/3 innings with only two hits and a run allowed.

Pitching for Cleveland is third-year pro Corey Kluber (4-4, 4.08) who has really hit his stride as of late. Through his last six starts he is 2-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Enjoy the game...

Corey Kluber???...another baseball name gone wrong.

The kid should have been a hitter! LOL

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Tracy has earned his start. Glad to see Solano.

Rabbit34 said...

Uh-oh. If Kluber has hit his stride lately, he ought to go through us like that knife through butter. Yep, finally Johnson has moved Rendon up in the lineup. Our only trouble now is the 3-4-5 positions, you know, the clutch strikeout guys. Hope SS is back in form. I'm still waiting for the final collapse of the team though. Hey, it's what we've come to expect. Now, on the bright side....???...never mind.

Hey folks... Happy Father's Day to ya! I will have to listen to XM since I'm away ...

Looking forward to the game (and hopefully the win!)

I'd like to see how Solano handles Strasburg. Kurt sure could use a rest.

I'm glad Rendon earned starting everyday against rightys.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Solano calls a good game, too... I'm glad Zook is out... He needs like an entire series off.... I wonder if SS will be on a pitch count/limit today....

Anonymous said...

Kirbs - Rendon has proven that he should be starting every day against everybody. Kid looks like a true professional hitter. I know it is way too early for such comparisons, but today Baseball Reference's 162 game projection for Rendon looks a lot like a typical Wade Boggs season.

Im the only who thinks span should not be leading off?

Laddie Blah Blah said...

When you win one where your best pitcher loses a 5-run lead, your worst hitter gets you back in the game, and then your best hitter fouls out weakly in the 9th, only he doesn't, and then hits the game-winning HR, then maybe its Kismet. If the Nats can take their 2nd straight series on the road, and their 3rd straight, overall, then Nats Nation can start to take their chances seriously, again.

Rendon belongs in the 2-hole. He went 3 of 5 last night (almost half the team's 8 hits), including the game winner, scored 2 runs and knocked in another (the game winner) with his solo HR. That may be more than all the other 2-hole hitters have accomplished all year long, in just one game.

Solano gets an important test, calling the game for SS. Marrero takes a seat. Too much pressure, maybe, for Chris to handle? Tracy at 3rd - can he do it, again? Davey is still working around Harper's absence and using the DH to take a look at some others. Plenty of guys getting a chance to show what they can do.

But when Harp comes back, Davey's lineup looks set with Span, Rendon, Harp, Ryan from 1 to 4. As usual, Davey will alternate catchers and, perhaps, flip ALR (against righties) and Werth (against lefties) in the 5 - 6 slots. That is one heck of a lineup. How many teams have a guy like Desi batting 7th? And Desi seems to do better the farther down the lineup he goes. When Ramos finally comes off the DL, Davey will have his hairy chested power guys coming to the plate from the 2-hole all the way down to the 8-hole.

With a revamped pen, all the starters back, and, at last, some meaningful contributions from the bench, Davey has the team he thought he did in spring training.

Anthony Rendon is making a big difference. And he is just going to get better. I mean, he is scary good with the stick.

"Boy, just wait until (insert star's name here) gets back! Then we'll be tearing it all up!"

The way this season has been going, it should be more like, "Wait until (insert star's name here) gets back! Then someone else is gonna get injured..."

It's like the baseball gods are mad at us or something.

But, boy, just wait until Harp and Rendon are batting 2-3!

Cedeno was the one to get sent back down.

David Proctor said...

Jeez, I didn't realize Span's Home/Road splits were so bad .201 on the road, .317 at home.

David Proctor said...

Just another double for Anthony Rendon.

Unknown said...

Heck, let Rendon serve as hitting coach too.

David Proctor said...

Oh that was a nasty pitch.

Anonymous said...

Zim need to be more aggressive in the3 hole with men on, especially with LaFail and Werth's behind him.

David Proctor said...

I don't recall Zim ever looking at so many Called Strike 3's before. I mean, that was a nasty pitch so I'm not blaming him for this one specifically, but it's been an ongoing thing. It's weird.

Anonymous said...

Bryce swings early in the count with men on base because he knows they won't give him anything late in the count. Don't understand why Zim can't do that.

Rabbit34 said...

Wasted another double by Rendon. Good old Zimmerman struck out on cue. At least LaRoche hit the ball. Can't fault him there. Getting Zim and Werth off the team can't come soon enough.

David Proctor said...

Oh god. None of those pitches were even close. The only strike was on a failed bunt.

David Proctor said...

Settle down now, Stras

EmDash said...

Hmm. Stras doesn't look real comfortable so far. Hope he's actually okay and they're not rushing him back too fast. Of course, he didn't have a rehab start, so maybe he's just rusty?

Gotta figure he's on an 80-ish pitch limit like Detwiler was.

David Proctor said...

His velocity has already hit 98 so I'd say he's fine. Just wild.

Section 222 said...

I think in the Carp and FP drinking game, "lettin' the ball travel" should be added to "serious jammage." Maybe also "gettin' on top of it."

Section 222 said...

Gettin' on top of it!!

Section 222 said...

He let the ball travel too, I'm sure. FP just didn't have time to mention it.

David Proctor said...

Better inning that time.

Unknown said...

SS is settling down, just seems to take him an inning or more to get in a groove.

David Proctor said...

Indians bailing out Zim. I'll take it.

If Rendon keeps hitting, we'll never have to see Danny again.

Worst middle of the lineup in baseball in my opinion.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

ALR anither called strike out when man is on third less than 2 outs

Drew said...

Jiminy Christmas. Just put the ball in play, Jayson.

Depot Master said...

Two batters, no contact.

Anonymous said...

Pathetic. Why does Desmond not bat 5th. LaFail needs to go. His slumps are unbearable. The truth is aside from Rendon and Harper there aren't any great hitters on this team. Zim, Desi and LaRoche occasionally get hot but aren't that great overall

phil dunton said...

I don't know if I can handle all this clutch hitting with RISP. This has been going on all season and it is painful to watch. Zimmerman, Werth and Laroche are the biggest culprits.

Depot Master said...

Make that 3.

phil dunton said...

Rendon should bat in the clean up spot.

Section 222 said...

No comment on what happened in that last inning. Well, ok, one comment. Our "big boppers" are pathetic with men on base.

Rendon now has 6 multi-hit games in his 16 games this year . Espi had 4 in 44. He also has a shot for his second 3-hit game. The last time Espi did that was September 24 of last year.

I think I'll keep keep tracking of this. At least one thing is going right.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Davey please do us a favor keep Rendon and Harper from Eck.

The vets have way too much Eck in them already. Just hit the ball to the outfield with man on third no outs. Tou dont K especially looking.

Rabbit34 said...

UNBELIEVABLE!!! These guys really must be trying for those strikeouts! Come on! First and third no outs. LaRoche strike out, on cue. Werth strike out, on cue. Desmond strike out, on cue. You know the Rabbit's right. These guys are BAD! Ugh. So predictable.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Situational hitting. ugh

David Proctor said...

The Indians had a base hit with a RISP. That's allowed? I figured there must be a rule against it and that's why we never do it.

Anonymous said...

Zim should apologize to fans for his pathetic play this year. He pulled an absolute heist on this org with his contract. Davey pleading to resign LaFail. Horrible leadership there.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

First chance with man in scoring position they hit. When will be free of the Eck curse.?

EmDash said...

Problem isn't necessarily RISP hitting. It's hitting in general - every team fails to take advantage of opportunities. But when you only get 4 baserunners, one on an error, you don't get the opportunities nearly often enough. The team OBP is way too low, and that's the problem in a nutshell.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Our hitters just do not focus in needed situations. Until they do we will all be frustrated.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

We are 14th out of 15.

Anonymous said...

Laroche hitting 239. Zim 270. Werth 257. Our 3-5 hitters.

Rabbit34 said...

Look at Zim and Werth. The more they're paid, the less they have to focus. They have already duped the team, now just grab the money and run ...or strike out. BUMS.

David Proctor said...

Sigh. If you think Zim, Werth, ALR or anyone else on this team isn't trying, I don't know what to tell you.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

No matter who the catching they cant throw anyone out. Why? Terrible holding by pitchers.

Of course lead off walk comes back to bite Stras's ass.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Adam La Roche with the worst at bat of the season, closely followed by Jayson Werth and Ian Desmond.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I dont use the word not trying, though the real word is execution, their execution is very week.

Jane Elizabeth said...

The righty lefty thing only works when players can at least hit somewhat. Bernadina has no clue what he is doing out there.

David Proctor said...

Bernadina is hitting like .300 over the last month. He started off so awful that his overall numbers are down, but Shark has been fine lately.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Span's average goes lower and lower.....

Jane Elizabeth said...

Yeah, if a guy goes 1-3 in 3 at bats, that does put you over .300. His performance this year has been execrable on offense.

phil dunton said...

We are stuck with Werth, but Zim is a different story. Although his career is headed in the same direction as Werth's, he still has trade value until his onerous, no trade, 6 year, $100 million contract kicks in. On the surface, his stats don't look too bad but he pads them during a couple of hot streaks during the season while the rest of the time he is simply awful.

David Proctor said...

William O. Douglas Loeffler said...

You know good and well that's not the case. Bernadina has gotten quite a few at-bats and been fine.

Rabbit34 said...

Ok, runner on second for the Nats. No one out. Cue 'em up guys.

EmDash said...

Zimm's OPS+ is 124, with 100 being average. LaRoche's is 106, which means he's been great in May and June after his very poor April. Desmond's is 122. Those guys generally aren't the problem, whatever happens today.

They should be putting Kobernus in for Span now, right?

Jane Elizabeth said...

Span refuses to take home.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Our guys just stand there with the bat on their shoulders....

BigCat said...

Eck gotta go

Drew said...

Lord, what a hitter.

Great pitch recognition and he lines a frozen rope to right. Just exquisite.'

phil dunton said...

By the way, for those saying: Dump Laroche----he has no trade value. There was very limited interest in him during the off season and with his horrible 2013 stats and a $24 million contract there would be even less interest now.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Rendon and harper stay away from Eck please.

EmDash said...

Jewett stopped him, not Span's fault.

Jane Elizabeth said...

You have to make contact.

Anonymous said...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Rendon could hit at Rice,so this is not a surprise just keep him away from Eck.

Drew said...

For God's sake!

Jane Elizabeth said...

Let's bunt

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Quit striking out with men on third. Simply unacceptable

David Proctor said...

Wow.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I am only following on game track. Was there any chance could score on Rendon's hit or was it hit too hard?

David Proctor said...

MNF, it was probably hit too hard, but the outfielder dropped the ball. Span had already been held up and he hurt himself by fouling the ball off his foot so he wasn't running very well.

Jane Elizabeth said...

La Roche is an maddening today. Last time a double play brings a run home but Adam was too lazy to swing. This time he hits into a double play.

SCNatsFan said...

What happened to clutch hitting?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

For crying out lound why are these hitters not executing? Just need to fl to the outfield

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

So jewitt will send slow runners sent a fast runner we score.

Anonymous said...

I'd rather have Espinosa bat now than Zim or Laroche. At least he'll probably swing.

Rabbit34 said...

Adam couldn't put us through three strikeouts with no outs runners on first and third. Just hit a double play after the first strikeout. No problem. These guys have it DOWN! Now I feel bad for Rendon, he has no support. And how about SS! Back and pitching with no support. Ugh.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Ryan Zimmerman's at bat was pathetic this inning.

BigCat said...

Eck gotta go

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I know Eck doesnt tell him to do this, but Obviously he doesnt prepare them to not do it.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Zimmerman did not even come close to putting the bat on the ball.

Section 222 said...

Rendon deserves to cut ALR's hair after what the two of them have done the last two times up.

Jane Elizabeth said...

So glad we traded Morse and got a lead-off hitter who can't even score from second on an outfield single, lol....

Anonymous said...

Zim has officially renounced his FOF label. He is now just some guy that can play a decent first base. That label goes to Bryce and Rendon.

Jane Elizabeth said...

This is mostly Rendon's fault for only hitting doubles and singles instead of homer runs.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Trent Jewitt is the worst.... Situational hitting is terrible...

Jane Elizabeth said...

Over and over, we have a runner on third and no outs and we have no possibility of bringing the guy in. Jewett had no business not sending Span.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Because of the way the line-up is falling, we may only have one last chance to score in the 8th. Not expecting much this inning.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

We got time.... Come on Nats... Lets do this!

Section 222 said...

By the way, Rendon now has had his second 3-hit game in the 16 he's played this year. Espi didn't have any in his 44 games this year, and had 6 games of 3 or more hits all last year in the 160 games he played.

Anonymous said...

Bryce should hit cleanup when he returns. Desmond 5th. LaFail 6th. Werth 7 or lead off.

Jane Elizabeth said...

I am really perturbed by Zimmerman and La Roche's at bats in this game.

BigCat said...

Eck must go

Section 222 said...

Come to think of it, he should cut Zim's hair too. Ugly hitting.

David Proctor said...

Another RISP. Can we find a way to strand him?

Jane Elizabeth said...

Your best hitters should hit one and two. 3rd is pushing it. Sports Illustrated just did an article on this. Clean-up hitters get far fewer at bat. Lucky double by Werth but I'll take it. He may get tired standing out there on 2nd, however.

Unknown said...
