Game 67: Nats at Indians

Chase here posting the game threads for the weekend as the Nats continue their series with the Cleveland Indians. After mustering just two hits against Justin Masterson last night, Washington will take a shot at the resurgent Scott Kazmir (3-4, 5.33 ERA). Though his numbers overall aren't spectacular, the lefty has been very good at home with a 3-0 record and 3.68 ERA at Progressive Field. This will be his first time facing the Nationals.

Working in Washington's favor is the presence of Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 2.00) on the mound. They saw a terrific outing by Gio Gonzalez last night and should expect their starter to give them a good chance to win once again this evening. Zimmermann will be seeking his 10th win in the team's 67th game of the year. He has never faced the Indians before.

Davey Johnson has bumped Anthony Rendon up to hit second for the first time this season, likely in hopes his patience at the plate can pay dividends at the top of the lineup. Through 15 games this year Rendon already has more walks than Danny Espinosa and is only two behind Jayson Werth in 22 less games. Chris Marrero is also in the seven hole as the designated hitter.

Enjoy the game...

A chance to do to-night, what we didn't do last night!

Kazmir is no Masterson, but then again, the Nats could prove me wrong!!!

sjm308 said...

This looks more like what I had hoped for last night. Of course that doesn't mean anything. Like Rendon in the #2 spot and can't wait to have Werth moved down in the order when Bryce is healthy. I can also live with Werth at #2 and Rendon hitting behind Desmond.

Lets Go Nats!!

Now this is a line up!

Kirbs said...

Giants put up 3 on Minor.

NatsLady said...

Col put up 6 on Filly. Of course, that doesn't mean much, as they didn't hold the 5 run lead yesterday.

Got a good feeling about tonight. GYFNG!!!

Davey read my emsl on putting Rendon in 2 hole.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

BJ Upton goes over the wall to rob a HR from Posey only the ball hits the middle of the wall. Don't see that everyday.

David Proctor said...

Love this lineup.

UnkyD said...

This smells like a productive lineup....

Holden Baroque said...

BJ Upton 2-run homer gets Barves w/in 1

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Sec3 and BJ has 2 HRs in the game.

David Proctor said...

BJ Upton and Danny Espinosa (good Espinosa, not this year) are remarkably similar. Both play good D, both can hit for power, both can steal bases, neither can hit for average, both strike out A LOT.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Now another pitcher to the hospital with a liner to his head. This time Alex Cobb of the Rays. T&P

Laddie Blah Blah said...

Agree that Rendon belongs in the 2-hole. Would love to see Marrero do something tonight. This is yet another chance for him. He is in danger of becoming a RH Roger Bernadina. You only get so many chances before you become a pine splinter magnet.

Werth has been taking far too many strikes. He knows it, and tonight would be as good a time as any to snap out of it.

Suzuki and Zimmermann have really clicked as a battery. Davey better hope that Suzuki holds it together. He is leaning on that guy awfully hard. Solano has called some good games (e.g. Ohlendorf). Give Kurt a breather every now and then. Lord knows Solano is well-rested.

I would love to see Brown replace Tracy. He strikes out too much, but he has also been getting some big hits in important game situations, and has come off the DL with some consistent pop in that bat.

Let's go, Nats. You are better than you showed, last night. You keep on losing, and Rizzo is gonna bring back Danny on you!

JZ wins no. 10. The Nats score on an error, stolen base, wild pitch, and a balk (thank you, Bob Davidson) and win 1 - 0 as JZ throws 28 pitches for a 1-hit, complete game shutout, while the Cleveland staff no-hits the Nats.

I'll take it.

Drew said...

Hope Tampa's Cobb is OK.

With the Braves, Pirates and Reds trailing, this is a big chance for the Nats to gain ground.

Bring the lumber, boys. GYFNG!

Ending in the Os game was epic. Pinch runner forgot how many outs there were and on a flyout to RF just kept running from 1st to 3rd and got doubled off 1st to end the game. Os lose 5-4 :)

Unknown said...

Much better lineup

djinFl. said...

Laddie, I agree on Solano. I think he has called exceptional games and Zook really needs a rest. Maybe give the Onion Sunday and Monday and let Zook alternate between the whirlpool and massage therapist.

Nats 128 said...

"Zook really needs a rest"

Seems like alot of people here see that and Davey doesnt care. I hope he got a good night sleep.

David Proctor said...

Wow the Giants botch a double play ball that would've ended the game. Went right through the SS's legs. Danger lurking.

Nats 128 said...

Uh oh. Trouble in Atlanta. Bases loaded 1 out.

David Proctor said...

Nats 128 said...
"Zook really needs a rest"

I think it's because a lot of people here think that when someone slumps, they just need a rest and that will make it okay. That's not really right. You have to hit your way out of a slump.

Now maybe with Suzuki, it's actually the case since we know how beat up he gets behind the plate. But generally speaking...

David Proctor said...

Romo blows the save. Tie game. Bases still loaded, 1 out.

Nats 128 said...

Braves walkoff

NatsLady said...

Romo and G'nts blew the game.

David Proctor said...

ZIM!

Nats 128 said...

Zimm!

Unknown said...

Well that hurt. Wish the Nats would have more than 1 walk off win for the year! that really is a way to turn the momentum for a team. Romo looked bad.

David Proctor said...

BACK TO BACK!

Nats 128 said...

I guess Werth's wrist is fine.

Smatt1001 said...

Back to Back!!

Joe Seamhead said...

Yes! No, after a month on the DL, a day off, and a rain out Werth does not need a rest. He needs to get his reps, IMHO.

David Proctor said...

If this guy keeps throwing fastballs, we're going to have a good night. We can hit fastballs. It's all the other junk we can't hit.

David Proctor said...

Is it just me or is the sound weird for this game?

Nats 128 said...

Didn't know that Jordans 13.3 pitches per inning is the best in baseball. How come FP never told us that.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Romo has .88 Whip but since he bet on the Braves, he throws the game in the 9th. He basically made Henry's effort against the Braves a couple of weeks ago look so-so by comparison.

Romo is on my list.

Nats 128 said...

"Is it just me or is the sound weird for this game?"

That is just Verduccis voice. He sounds kind of whiney.

David Proctor said...

Zim is wild.

Nats 128 said...

"Zim is wild."

Isnt that called controlled chaos. Good inning.

David Proctor said...

But Zim recovers just as we'd expect. No biggie.

Section 222 said...

JZnn also has the second best (to Kershaw) road ERA in baseball over the past two seasons. Another impressive stat.

Verducci may sound whiney, but I like his commentary. No nonsense. Very stat oriented. Not too long ago, he subbed for Harold R on MLB Now, and he and Brian Kenney had a sabre lovefest.

David Proctor said...

I like Verducci as well.

David Proctor said...

DESI!

Unknown said...

Hopefully the rain doesn't get bad in Cleveland we're looking good 3-0

NatsLady said...

Y'know--this is fun. I hope Francona leaves him in for a while.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

2 singles last night

Nats 128 said...

Look how quickly Desi gets going without a hacker like Tracy or Espi hitting behind him.

Unknown said...

singles, heck even doubles are over-rated...haha! when is the last time our first 3 runs have been solo HR's??

Nats 128 said...

Kazmir already over 40 pitches in 2 innings. He might not be around long.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Who isplaying tonight only the Indians? Fox Spends 90% of nats at bat talking about Indians

Nats 128 said...

Kobernus BA down to .214 How quickly he was called a professional hitter when he had that 2 hit game. I guess if he gets 3 hits in a row here he will be back to a professional hitter. He pounds mostly everything into the ground and that is BABIP to find those holes. Need to see him hit some line drives. Haven't seen that yet.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I am away from home but this is my game fotunstely.

Jim Webster said...

Fox play-by-play guy's nasal yelling is driving me nuts. Need to go to Charlie and Dave.

Jane Elizabeth said...

My audio is bad as well. It is over-processed and scratchy.

Romo and that Paco guy from the Dodgers both delivered games to the Braves on a silver platter.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Dave and charlie on my phone about 30 seconds behind Fox. Still better than listening to Fox

Jane Elizabeth said...

Compared to Espinosa, Kop is Babe Ruth.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Maybe if we would hit we would have games delivered too.

David Proctor said...

Yet another double for Anthony Rendon.

Nats 128 said...

Rendon is amazing.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Rendon the double machine.

Unknown said...

Rendon rope...love it.

Nats 128 said...

I hope Giambi told Frazier not to take steroids. Just saying.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

That wasn't a gap double but a nice and easy line drive swing. Batting .315. Like!

NatsLady said...

See, Verducci just said, "That was not a pitch-around situation." He uses the term the way I use it, not as a synonym for intentional walk.

Smatt1001 said...

Bases loaded. Hoping they can add on.

David Proctor said...

Jeez LaRoche SMOKED that ball right to Kazmir.

Nats 128 said...

Dont worry Verducci about that .185 BA now with bases loaded as Davey doesnt care what you think. I dare you to ask him about that.

BTW, Espinosa was 0-3 in bases loaded situations. LaRoche 1-5 in bases loaded.

Section 222 said...

For your drink recording pleasure, the the NIDO spreadsheet.

Gee, it was so interesting hearing all about the Indians' No. 1 draft pick. Have they mentioned that Rendon, the Nats' No. 1 pick two years ago, now has a nine game hitting streak and coming into the game was hitting .370/.414/.519 since he returned to the majors 10 days ago?

Nats 128 said...

"Jeez LaRoche SMOKED that ball right to Kazmir."

That was Kipnis.

Unknown said...

Kenny Albert (play by play guy) used to be the play by play guy for the Caps & Bullets (not Wizards) for those interested and is currently the radio play by play guy for the NY Rangers...sorry if old news.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Wild pitch nice

David Proctor said...

Yes, I'm stupid. Kazmir is the pitcher. All the K's!

skidge said...

Thinking I did the right thing by having Charlie and Dave on, even if they're about a pitch ahead of Fox.

David Proctor said...

This rain is making me nervous. Get 5 innings in!

David Proctor said...

Now we get to work their bullpen and make them tired for tomorrow!

Joe Seamhead said...

I feel bad for Chris Marrero, but, hey, you gotta swing the bat.

Nats 128 said...

Kurt Suzuki is 0-5 in bases loaded situations. Werth 0-1, Span 0-1, Zimm, 2-3, Espi 0-3, Laroche 1-5, Desi 2-4, Lombo 0-0 w/ GW Sac Fly, Harper 0-0 (3-9 career), Tyler Moore 0-4, Chad Tracy 0-0

NatsLady said...

These are the same hitters we had yesterday. The difference? Kasmir is not Masterson.

David Proctor said...

So in other words, we need Zim or Desi up with the bases loaded, Nats 128?

Unknown said...

NL, have to disagree, Rendon is in the line-up and Tracy is not, big darn difference.

David Proctor said...

Well Zim had to give up a run eventually.

NatsLady said...

Aw, come on, guys--a rundown shouldn't be that close!!!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Skidge they are 3 pitches behind on mine.

Amr Khani said...

after last night, cleveland should not be whining about a basepath call. they got their huge break in a much more important situation

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Well a single run is not a problem it mutiple runs

David Proctor said...

Let's get that run back now.

NatsLady said...

PB--I'm all for Rendon, but I don't see how Tracy's absence enabled Zim, Werth, and Desi to hit homeruns.

Joe Seamhead said...

Hard to argue that, NL.

NatsLady said...

I just looked at Clip's inning because they have a thing on Fangraphs for the wildest of wild pitches--that pitch of Clip's that Suzuki caught was up near the 5-foot mark. Anyway, Clip was 0-2 on Carlos Santana when Tracy failed to catch that foul ball. That cost Clip a bunch of pitches (as he eventually walked Santana, etc.) I am not happy with Tracy a-tall, not at-all.

Section 222 said...

Verducci says Rendon reminds him of David Wright. "Wristy hitter, natural stroke to right center field." Nice comparison.

Unknown said...

NL, good point but with Tracy in the line-up yesterday they could pitch around Desmond knowing they would take their chances with Tracy and it worked which made a weak line-up even weaker...Joe, I tried.

Joe Seamhead said...

NL, I meant to imply that it was hard to argue against your point regarding Masterson/Kasmir.

NatsLady said...

Chris Archer ‏@ChrisArcher42 1m
Saw Cobb briefly. He was in good spirits, lots of smiles. Big thanks to @TheRealHos35 for coming to check on him as well.

NatsLady said...

I knew what you meant, Seam.

Nats 128 said...

"David Proctor said...
So in other words, we need Zim or Desi up with the bases loaded, Nats 128?"

I guess so + Harper. The fact the Nats are 100 points below the MLB average is boggling to the mind.

BigCat said...

The main thing Rendon needs to do is get stronger. Yes, he has a natural swing. And warning track power. That is not a knock on him. Just needs to get stronger.

skidge said...

Manassas, it's less behind for me on FM than on AM for some reason.

Section 222 said...

Uh-oh. We're gonna need all those runs.

Unknown said...

not a good location Jordan.

Joe Seamhead said...

BTW, Paul brandt, I was thinking that it was Kenny's dad Marv Albert that used to call the Bullets games.

OK Jordan, that's quite enough.

David Proctor said...

Whoa JZimm, I get you want to challenge, but a fastball down the middle to Reynolds isn't the way to do it.

Nats 128 said...

JZ needs to cut that stuff out. No need to challenge these guys. Theres no plane to catch. Pitch the darn ball.

Unknown said...

Well.. That escalated quickly.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Zim throws a lot of balls falls behind and grooves home run pitches.

Throw strikes to start an at bat

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

JZim trying to K on Reynolds. Not smart to challenge that guy.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Reminds me of the Orioles game. With fet way ahead and he quits focusing.

Now focus again.

Or just score 2 runs for him and he will stay focised.

Hitters have started to lose focus already.

David Proctor said...

Don't think hitters have lost focus, the Indians brought in a new pitcher.

Unknown said...

Joe, re. Kenny vs. Marv and the Bullets, I will look it up.

David Proctor said...

Great AB by Werth.

Nats 128 said...

Werths wrist is definitly fine.

NatsLady said...

Nice at-bat, Jayson.

Nats 128 said...

Kenny Albert did the Washington basketball team. He lived in Rockville.

David Proctor said...

The shift beat ALR that time.

NatsLady said...

LaRoche has got to defeat that shift.

Nats 128 said...

Wasnt Kenny a fill in for Bob Carpenter in Nats broadcasts in 2005.

Nats 128 said...

"LaRoche has got to defeat that shift."

Start going the other way or hit HRs as those beat the shift every time.

Joe Seamhead said...

PBS, Kenny's uncle Steve called NBA games, too, I think. Marv had a rather weird biting.

Oh, well. Wasted great AB by Jayson.

Unknown said...

thx Nats128, that is what my quick research confirmed...back when it was HTS...remember, Home Team Sports? Mel Proctor and many others, ok back to the Nats...need runs!

David Proctor said...

LaRoche is in a mini-slump of his own now. 0 for his last 10.

Joe Seamhead said...

You're right, guts, re: Kenny. His dad did more network NBA games. Kenny must have started pretty young.

Joe Seamhead said...

Darn auto correct! You're right, guys.

David Proctor said...

JZimm does not have his best stuff tonight, that's for sure. Hopefully he can battle through it.

Unknown said...

Joe, yes, you are correct, Marv had an encounter at the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City involving his incisors...see article below for those interested, was all over the press for a long time:

http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/marv-albert-faces-sentencing-in-sexual-assault-case

David Proctor said...

"And I'm really feeling uneasy how Jordan is handling his lead."

Agreed. Is it just me or does Jordan actually do better when he has no margin for error? I think he gets a little to confident and challenges a little too much once he has a lead.

David Proctor said...

This is getting ridiculous.

Nats 128 said...

This isnt funny any more. 5-0 lead now a 1 run lead.

David Proctor said...

Wow. Wow. Wow. What the f**k.

Smatt1001 said...

Yikes! There goes the lead.

Joe Seamhead said...

Pull him now, Davey.

Nats 128 said...

David Proctor said...

"Smatt1001 said...

JZimm needs to be able to make a 5 run lead stick. If we lose this game, it's not on the offense, it's on Zim.

They get a big lead and forget to play the rest of the game. They don't usually come back from games like this. Time for a gut check.

When Nats score early, they usually never score another run so don't count on a comeback.

Nats 128 said...

Nats just got a break now capitalize on it.

David,

Unfortunately, though I luv em to death, they really aren't that good of a team this year. They have some talent but no fight. Time to prove me and others wrong. As I said earlier time for a gut check.

Joe Seamhead said...

Ok, Chris, you can hit this guy!

Nats 128 said...

Marrero better make something happen here or people will be wishing for Chad Tracy or maybe not.

Section 222 said...

JZnn's ERA has taken a beating tonight. Now let's see if the RH heavy lineup can score a few runs. Marrero hasn't shown much tonight unfortunately.

I think Gio is a better hitter than his buddy Marrero.

mick said...

I expect Nats to score more runs in this game

phil dunton said...

Marrero showed he couldn't hit major league pitching in 2011 and nothing has changed.

Nats 128 said...

however, the umps will have nothing to do with the Nats losing the game

mick said...

what is with the straight fastball??? Is JZim trying to show off on nat TV?

Nats 128 said...

Why cant Span do what Rendon did. Every time Span tries to hit a HR the ball goes into a fielders glove. Get singles and doubles.

mick said...

sitting Rendon last night was BIZZARRE.. no logic to the move at all.... and no defense for it

Krol is legit. I love this guy.

Unknown said...

mick, deep breaths...inhale 1-2-3, exhale, 1-2-3..repeat as needed during every Nats loss/meltdown...it works for me, that & making this all funny somehow, we can still win this.

mick said...

Krol has been a bright spot... now I think there are too many holes to be good, as soon as one leak is plugged up, 2 more leaks occur in this sinking season

Exposremains said...

Its not complicated, when you look good one night and bad the next one, when you look like you turned the corner but you go back to bad habits, you're a .500 team. When you were supposed to be good and your not, you're an underachiever.that's the reality.

JZim cant stand getting a lead in an AL park.
