Game 65: Nats at Rockies

USA Today Sports Images
It's been 29 days since Ross Detwiler last pitched, a strained right oblique muscle having shelved him for nearly a month. Today, the left-hander returns to the mound, healthy and hoping to pick up where he left off. In eight starts before the injury, Detwiler sported a 2.76 ERA, certainly pitching better than his 2-4 record would suggest.

The Nationals have missed their No. 5 starter and gladly welcome him back with open arms this afternoon as they seek to win their second straight against the Rockies and take this series. With Detwiler officially activated off the DL, reliever Erik Davis has been optioned to Class AAA Syracuse. That means Ross Ohlendorf is sticking around for now, though the Nats will need to make another roster move on Sunday when Stephen Strasburg returns.

After watching his club score five runs last night against Jorge De La Rosa and Co., Davey Johnson is going with a similar lineup against fellow lefty Jeff Francis. That means Jeff Kobernus makes his second straight start in left field, batting second. The only change: Kurt Suzuki returns behind the plate, batting eighth.

Though I'm not in Denver for this series, I will be watching alongside all of you this afternoon. And I'll have an Instant Analysis post as soon as the game ends, so be sure to check back for that...

Balk not called by Balking Bob

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I said that before FP

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Balking bob thanks

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

That's a great call Bob D. Big balk!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Detwiler gets the no decision!

A DC Wonk said...

Trying to follow game day: did he balk _twice_ after an Ian steal?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I was at a game vs cubs in 2006 balking bob called a walk off balk with Chrisian Guzman scored the game

David Proctor said...

Need a shutdown inning from Drew.

Yes, he balked twice after the steal, Wonk.

David Proctor said...

Nevermind, Stammen still in.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Yes home plate called first and Balking Bob called second. Both correct. Second very slight. Typical balking Bob. Call.

Probably Drew for the 8th.

Holden Baroque said...

Stammen had better be careful if somebody gets on.

Wonk, yes, but the second one, that Davidson called, was particularly chickenbleep.

David Proctor said...

Wait a second, Jhoulys Chacin is pinch hitting?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Have I mentioned that I love Balking Bob.... *snickers*

Cuz Lombo is some ish lately.....

David Proctor said...

Come on Craig, walking the pitcher?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Who got ejected? I hate walks... Come on Stammen!!!!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Walk a pitcher. Was just about to say great job and thenhe does somethibg completely stupid.

Holden Baroque said...

Yes, DP, Rox with a very short bench today.

David Proctor said...

If the Rockies score here because of the walk to the pitcher, I'm going to go off.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Walking the pitcher is the worst thing.... Come on Stammen...

Holden Baroque said...

MRS. B, apparently the pitcher who balked, barked, and got bounced.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Walking the pitchers leading to trouble. What on earth has happened 5 great efforts then walkingca pitcher then a single. Why would you walk a ptcher with 2 outs after great to 5 guys doesnt makescsense

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Thanks Sec 3.... I was following on game day on my phone until I got home....

Come on Stammen.... GET THIS LAST OUT!!!!

NatsLady said...

Davey doesn't trust Storen, I guess?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Stammen makes this interesting when it shouldn't be. Go Craig!!!

MrsB loves the Nats said...

How did we get an error?

David Proctor said...

Storen for the 8th, I'd imagine, NatsLady.

Holden Baroque said...

That infield looks like hell. I wonder how it's playing.

David Proctor said...

Good job Stammen.

NatsLady said...

You guys act like Stammen walked the pitcher on purpose!! LOL, he knows it's a mistake.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Yes... Lets do this!!!! Come on top of the order.... I want some runs!!!!

A DC Wonk said...

Man, when Stammen is on, he is on

Two perfect innings on Sunday, right? And then two more, well, scoreless, innings here.

Walk to Chacin doesn't count- because most of those balls (according to game day) were strikes.

Wait -- Jhoulys Chacin as a PH? OK, what am I missing? What in the _world_ is that about?

And two Rockies thrown out?

Somebody, please, fill me in! Gameday ain't doin' it for me here!

Holden Baroque said...

Error was on Werth, misplayed a double off the wall into a triple and a run.

NatsLady said...

Stammen is one cool customer. I like it.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Zim bails out Stay-men.

Anyone notice Lombo's average has realky dropped ince Espi left.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

NatsLady said...
Davey doesn't trust Storen, I guess?

That's not true at all. Storen comes in if last inning they got to the #2 spot in the order and they pinch hit for Stammen.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

CarGo and Fowler both injured

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Span last 2 games looking tired on his hits

David Proctor said...

Wow, I thought Bernadina was out.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Yes baby Yessssssss...... I love that man Roger!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I thought Tulo was going to come up hurt.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Wow, what a play by Bernadina!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

YES!!!!! RZIM

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

3 RBI for Zim

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Yesssssssss Ryan!!!!!! Another RBI!!!!!!! Yesssssssssssssss......

Holden Baroque said...

Wonk, Wilton Lopez, who had consecutive ticky-tacky balks called to tie the game, got tossed, probably for what he yelled at John Hirshbeck at first. Carlos Gomez got hurt while on deck, early; somebody else left injured, I forget who offhand; and they're carrying 13 pitchers, so the bench is short already. Thus Chacin pinch-walking.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Wonder if Span needs a day off.... Werth too....

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

When RZim hits a ball like that to RF wall it's a good sign!!!!

Holden Baroque said...

CANDYGRAM!

And he was definitely safe at second.

NatsLady said...

I wonder if Werth nicked his wrist on that dive... hitting very weakly.

Just wonderin' said...

Another balk?

David Proctor said...

Need more runs.

*great* summary! Thanks! (answers a lot of questions)

MNF - Lombo is a good utility man.... He was looking better than an obviously injured Espi....

I'm glad he is on our team but in the grand scheme of things, he isn't all that....

David Proctor said...

"NatsLady said...

I've had that thought in the back of my head, NL. I hope it's not true.

CarGo (gonzalez not gomez who is on the Brewers) got hit on a liner off Fowker's bat.

Fowler then got hit while bunting on hi right hand.

Thanks, MNF.

The Sofa regrets the error, and omission.

NatsLady said...

They are pitching around Rendon, would rather have Suzuki. Watch them walk him now.

Smatt1001 said...

Desi's 4-4 sweet!!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

What a pro AB from Rendon to spit on that slider.

David Proctor said...

Suzuki has to be due right? He's 0-7 in the series.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Zook has had a man ob every weak at bat.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Zook - if there ever was a time for you to get a base hit.... This is it....

Please... Get a base hit, at least....

Smatt1001 said...

Exactly right NatsLady

NatsLady said...

Yeah, that was the unintentional intentional walk. C'mon Zoook, make 'em pay.

David Proctor said...

Wow Suzuki had a pitch to hit there. Fouled it back.

I'm not buying that it was a pitch around. He was pitching him very carefully because he had 1st base open after the Wild Pitch.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Sofa I nrw info was close, so I cleared it up.
Help meant only.

David Proctor said...

Gah Suzuki. At least he hit that one sharply, I guess, but he needs to get it together.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Damn Zook.....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Zook needs to read Wee Wiilie Keeler's book too.

NatsLady said...

>I'm not buying that it was a pitch around. He was pitching him very carefully because he had 1st base open after the Wild Pitch.

Um, isn't that the same thing?

David Proctor said...

Still need more runs. I don't feel comfortable until we have a 5 run lead in this park. Take away the Grand Slam.

Holden Baroque said...

I realize that and appreciate the correction, MNF.
I just misspelled "Gonzalez"--that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Suzuki has left 7 runners on base today.

David Proctor said...

Hmm. Don't like Cedeno here. Probably just for this lefty.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uhhhhh idk if I like Cedeno here....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Lombo now .217 and Zook .221 come on guys get back to the 250's

NatsLady said...

Basically, the WP took the bat out of Rendon's hand. Not that they did it on purpose, but it worked out that way. Zook has no energy or strength for hitting. If Ramos is not coming back until after the All-Star Break Rizzo will have to look around.

David Proctor said...

NO WALKS. That brings the tying run to the plate.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Suzuki may need an entire series off.... I wonder if he is hurt... Ever since he got hit by that pitch (was it the ATl game) he hasn't had a hit....

Holden Baroque said...

I'm not buying that it was a pitch around. He was pitching him very carefully because he had 1st base open after the Wild Pitch.

Um, isn't that the same thing?

Thank you. That's "Don't walk him but don't give him anything he can hit."

NatsLady said...

June 13, 2013 5:47 PM

NatsLady, he had him 2-2 count. His next 2 pitches were breaking pitches he was trying to get a swing and miss.

That's not a pitch around. If 1st base wasn't open he probably puts that slider more in the zone.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Good come back Xavier.

David Proctor said...

Yep, that's what I thought. Cedeno just to face Colvin.

Need a good inning Drew.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

... Storen time.... Come on Drew... Forget last outting and pitch like the outting before that...

JD said...

I am so confused.

1) Cedeno ?
2) Torrealba pinch hitting for Tulo?

Is there a full moon tonight?

NatsLady said...

>If 1st base wasn't open he probably puts that slider more in the zone.

Well, that's my definition of a pitch around. YM obviously varies.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Sofa between my fat fingersand my keys dont click, I can by your story.

Now Drew forget Tuesday and do the job today.

NatsLady said...

Come on, Drew. GET IT TOGETHER.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Here's the pitch around definition I've always gone with.

Holden Baroque said...

Rex Brothers warming for Colo. Shouldn't he own a used car lot, with that name?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Tulo was injured fielding Ian's th at bat. I was surprised he stayed in. Why confused?

David Proctor said...

Good job Drew. Let's see if we can add a run or two for Mr. Untuck.

And also like I said NatsLady, Davey had no problem with Drew Storen. I gave you the reason he didn't pitch last inning.

JD said...

Manassas,

Because I am following on gameday and I didn't know Tulo was hurt.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

First 2 pitches terrible, but after that good job Drew.

NatsLady said...

Ghost, your definition of a "pitch around" is my definition of an intentional walk. This wasn't the catcher holding out his glove. But they were not giving him anything close to a hittable pitch because 1B was open. I'll stick with my definition.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

MNF - I didnt think he got injured on the Desi hit.... I thought he was more mad with himself...

Holden Baroque said...

OK, tucking it up here, boss.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I figured you were following on computer, so made sure to answer your question.

3 injured today.

David Proctor said...

Alright Soriano. Can we get a 1-2-3 inning? Seems like you always have to make it interesting.

NatsLady said...

Ghost you are right correct on Storen. Good use of Cendeno.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

NatsLady, that is not my definition of a pitch around. That is from a website that I have bookmarked.

Roll back your DVR and listen to what FP said after the 2-2 pitch that Belisle may come back with the same pitch.

Hello from beautiful CO. This was our first in-person game at Coors Field and it was a good one. My husband, Chicago/Denver baseball buddy, and I had a good time. I even untucked (it's okay - the only COL fans near us were in front of us at that point, as we'd climbed above the mile high seats to get out of the rain). Lovely park, and everyone was very friendly.

Caught most of last night's game on the radio (we spent the day in Rockie Mountains National Park). Their radio guys were, eh, okay.

Speaking of broadcasters, as one of ours is known to say: seee youu laater!

Why the hell does Davey keep playing Chad Tracy? I am speechless. Chad Tracy is the closest thing to an automatic out in the history of baseball and unlike Lombardozzi and Bernadina, has no other redeeming qualities. I am livid about the line-up that Davey put out there tonight. It was designed for failure from the beginning.
