Game 64: Nats at Rockies

USA Today Sports Images
We've talked plenty about the Nationals' ever-changing rotation, and obviously there will be a new member added to that group tonight when Ross Ohlendorf (just summoned from Class AAA Syracuse) takes the mound against the Rockies. But a great pitching performance is only as good as the run support said pitcher gets from his teammate, and few Nats pitchers are getting much run support these days.

So it's up to tonight's starting eight to get something going at hitter-friendly Coors Field. It didn't happen last night, when the Nationals scored two early runs and then essentially shut down for the rest of the evening. Perhaps this group can enjoy some more sustained success against Jorge De La Rosa, a pretty good left-hander for Colorado.

Davey Johnson will try out a couple of new faces, with Jeff Kobernus making his second career start (his first in left field) and Jhonatan Solano behind the plate (he worked with Ohlendorf in Syracuse earlier this year). Otherwise, it's the same lineup we've seen for much of the last week.

As you know, I'm not in Colorado, but please enjoy the game and the conversation...

Not going to say anything until the game is over because things can change in an instant (see: Haren, Dan) but Ohlendorf looks pretty darn good. Why wasn't he spot starting instead of Karns?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Oww... That K was a thing of beauty....

blovy8 said...

I suppose, but the baserunning karma has not been good

Solano runs like a normal catcher?

A couple of folks have commented that RO's delivery looks silly. I remember that kind of windup was standard back in the 60s when I was growing up. That's the delivery I imitated when I was pitching in the backyard, but when I started pitching in Little League my coach taught me a simpler one.

David Proctor said...

Well it was in the 5th inning yesterday that Haren melted down. Let's see what Ohlendorf has in store for us.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

So his at bats tonight not like last night's yet. Plsstered the ball last night.

mick said...

watch the old Dizzy Dean movie with Dan Daily...every pitcher in the movie winds up like that, pretty funny

mick said...

The Pride of St. Louis (1952) that was the movie

MrsB loves the Nats said...

.... And here is the 5th inning...here is to us NOT repeating the mess from last night....

mick said...

my thoughts and fears exactly

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Now, this is where I get upset... That same first pitch was a K for Adam but a ball this time....

Be consistent blue....

David Proctor said...

Giving up a solo homer isn't the worst thing in the world, if it happens. The key is just to keep people off base.

mick said...

or as Yogi would say, "deja vu all over again"

blovy8 said...

Ohlendorf's delivery is old school, nothing really wrong with it, since he can still hide the grip in the mitt before he pitches. The hesitation move with De La Rosa is more common which seems weird. Seems like a lot of Mexican pitchers have had that, and Japanese guys like Kuroda, for instance.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

On a personal note for JZim. shelby miller 6 innings and 4 earned runs. Drops to 2.21 moving Zim to 3rd place. Need Corban to have bad night against. Dodgers

mick said...

agree with FP... he looks relax and confident

David Proctor said...

Worst case scenario is a walk to me. DO NOT PUT PEOPLE ON BASE. A solo home run is not that big a deal, if it happens.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Go talk to him JS... Calm him down...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Double play time... *come on double play*

David Proctor said...

I got flashbacks of yesterday. It started the exact same way. Out, walk, homer.

blovy8 said...

boy, that must have run into some ashes up there

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

0-2 to a walk always a recipe for maalox

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Okay... I can't do this tonight... My heart just dropped...

Dammit Nats, please score more runs next inning...

David Proctor said...

Ohlendorf outperforms Haren...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

We got out the 5th..... My heart can't take this....

More runs, please?????!!!!!

mick said...

1 hit in 5 innings...impressive, could he be a significant bright spot down the road?

sometimesitrains said...

i almost feel if i think of Ohlendorf i'll jinx it.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Depending on the cook, i might pick breakfsst.

Now lets get runs.

Drew said...

The captain has turned off the Haren sign. Feel free to get up and walk around the cabin.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Sometimesitrains-

My thoughts too... I will withholding praising him until we secure the W...

Don't want to jinx...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Unh....

Did not know Kobernus had a .300 average....

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Good at bat Kobernus!

sometimesitrains said...

MrsB -- it's that 10 AB sample size. one more or fewer hit and it's .200 or .400.

baseballswami said...

This season has made me very susceptible to fears of cursing the Nats. I always, always think I am doing something to jinx them. And if I really had that kind iof power it would be way cool.

Unknown said...

are those marijuana plants in the home bullpen?

Section 222 said...

Did Karns make it through the 5th inning in any of his 3 starts? And let's not even talk about Duke -- he gave up runs in 6 out of his 11 appearances before he was released. So , a tip of the ol' cap to Ross Ohlendorf.

Unknown said...

Braves lost... Need a win!!!

sometimesitrains said...

baseballswami -- i like to think there's little any one of us could do on a blog that would put the jinx in more than "World Series or Bust."

i mean, seriously.

David Proctor said...

What the hell was that? lol...

JaneB said...

First, can I just go on record again with the fact that Ian is my favorite Nat.
Second, Mrs. B the antidote to your heart stoppage is the tried and true Official Nats cocktail, created by Sunshine Bobby: One swig maalox, followed swiftly by two swigs of bourbon, Works like a charm.
Third, 222, he reminds me exactly of the pitching I saw growing up. A Met, it must be. If I had the bandwidth, I'd figure out who. Before the Doc Goodin days. He is old school for real. May he go the full game keeping the win, just like the true old school guys did.

blovy8 said...

good effort by fowler

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Wait ... A .... Dang... Minute...

I thought that was gone to 2nd level... Wow... But we will take the run!!!!!

Ouch, hope they aren't too hurt... That was almost a helluva catch....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

My God how could Zim not make third both on ground for second. Did he walk out of the box

baseballswami said...

He thought it was gone and did not leave the box at first. It was sooo almost gone. Did they knock it back in?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uhm.... Not to pea on the roses... But Zimm should be on 3rd now....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

When he hit it high and deep it doesnt carry like their high deep ones, but Zim should be on third with one out.

JaneB said...

I almost feel bad. But if collisions earn us a run, I'll take it;. We are still karmically owed for when Nick Johnson collided with Austin and that was the end of that.

sometimesitrains said...

MrsB -- i reckon if he scores anyway, it will be a garland of sweet pea and roses. ;)

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Hahaha.. MNF - yeah, I was just saying the same thing...

baseballswami said...

Oh- that day was horrible. Good point by Carp- if Kobernus has to come back on a catch they are both out. Hence- Zimmy on second.

I might've considered pinch hitting for Ohlendorf tbh...

number 0 for a pitcher? has there been one that is or has been famous? gilbert arenas is the only athlete that jumps out at me...maybe rick barry too?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Who ever is our next pitcher startstretching nowplease.

sometimesitrains said...

i agree, David. as wild as Ottavino had been, you let him off the hook by letting him throw over the plate to Ohlendorf with the bases loaded.

that said, i'm not going to complain about a 3 run inning.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I don't think we PH'd becuz DJ is trying to save the BP....

David Proctor said...

I'm not angry Davey didn't PH, I understand his reasoning. I probably would've PH though. 4 runs still isn't enough at Coors and we had a chance to make it a BIG inning. Oh well.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Ryan absolutely nails the hard plays....

sometimesitrains said...

hopefully a 4 run lead with 4 innings to go in Colorado will be enough . . .

David Proctor said...

Just keep men off base. A solo homer won't kill you. A 2 or 3 run one will.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

No FP.... We don't want Ross O to make any mistakes...

David Proctor said...

A walk. See, that's what I hate. Make them beat you.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Who comes in? Stammen?

blovy8 said...

not a bad move there Ohle

sometimesitrains said...

well, if nothing else, as least it lets us see how Ohlendorf performs in a bit of a leverage situation.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I hoped they stsrted stretching to be ready to start.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I liked that play By Rendon.... I agree with that...

Section 222 said...

Espinosa appeared in 44 games for the Nats. His longest hitting streak was four games, and he had four, count 'em, four, multi-hit games. Starting with his last game before being sent down on May 2, Rendon now has a hit in seven straight games, and he could match Espi's season total of multi-hit games if he gets another hit tonight.

And yes, he can play 2B.

Joe Seamhead said...

Faraz, yes he did, but there seems to be a perception here that he should've gotten to third on the hit. Personally, I'm thrilled to see a Zimm RBI, followed by a run scored on Desi's hit.

Gonat said...

Whoa, Rendon. The runner cuts right in front of Rendon to obstruct him and Rendon gets it. Perfect throw. Most 2nd baseman go to 1st on that.

blovy8 said...

DJ letting Ohlendorf prove something to him.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Unh....

Gonat said...

Lucky that wasn't a HR to CarGo.

blovy8 said...

unfortunately, it proved the wrong thing...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uh.... Time to pull him, I think...

David Proctor said...

Tulo will be the last batter. Righty-Righty.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uncle just said Kobernus played that wrong...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Lets dont even try to get the guy out so we dont have to pitch to CarGo.

He threw over to first what else can they do.

Now not pinch hitting less quality of a decision.

David Proctor said...

Oh my goodness.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

My goodness....

Faraz Shaikh said...

JoeS, I feel sometimes that standards here are tougher than most places.

Anyways, I was going through my fantasy team stats and noticed that Justin Upton has 29 RBIs despite 14 HRs.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Ross looks a little gassed... Maybe McCatty needs to come out....

David Proctor said...

He got out of it. As good as an outing as we possibly could have expected from Ohlendorf. Great job.

Now up to the bullpen.

Gonat said...

Wow! WOW! Ross pitched a GEM! Standing O!

Gonat said...

Twins take the lead against the Phoolie bullpen!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Explain this.

Rzim plastered one, CarGo hit it solid but nearly as hard, and they end up ib the same spot.

Rzim ends up at second CarGo 3rd

Drew said...

What a great job. Wow.

sometimesitrains said...

Ohlendorf giving the Nats a line of

6.0 IP; 2H; 1R; 1ER; 2BB; 2K

in Colorado. i think that's more than any of us reasonably could have expected.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

MNF - at this point, does it matter? Ryan got home and it's not like we would have had an extra run right there....

*standing O for Ross O*. Haren should be ashamed of himself....

Come on Nats.... Lets get some more runs!!!!

Jeff Wang said...

CarGo knows the field a lot more than Rzim.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Ross O did a fine job.

David Proctor said...

Odd that we still haven't hit a homer here. I realize we lost some power, but we have more than a few guys capable of hitting homers in this ballpark.

JaneB said...

I am so happy for Ross O. Just what we needed. Except we slso need the BP to not blow up

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uhm... So do we now start the discussion of keeping Ross O up here and turning Haren to a BP guy, for long innings....

blovy8 said...

Birthday hit for the shark, c'mon...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uhm... I think I'm seeing a floating SZ...

JaneB said...

Happy Birthday Roger!!!

Joe Seamhead said...

MNF @ 10:59 Kobernus misplayed the ball, took a while to pick it up, then made a weak throw. CaGo is fast, took advantage. Any questions?

Faraz Shaikh said...

ah CarGo is a faster base runner than RZ?

David Proctor said...

We've been walking a lot more lately. Good sign.

Gonat said...

I really want to hear Carp go "See You Later" tonight!

Section 222 said...

Sorry Faraz, I agree, very happy that Zim got an extra base hit and drove in a run. But I expect a guy making $14 million this year not to stand there and admire his majestic fly ball. CarGo didn't admire his, and he got an easy triple without the outfielders ending up sitting on the ground.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

RZ took time to get going he thought. It was a homer

blovy8 said...

Faraz cuts to the point, and you don't pass the runner waiting to see if it's going to be a circus catch. Seriously.

Gonat said...

Phoolies just lost. Drop to 31-35

blovy8 said...

too close to take, Zim

David Proctor said...

This guy is fooling our hitters big time with this changeup.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

For as few homers as we hit, we strike out a lot.

blovy8 said...

unlucky, that was a good 0-2 pitch to hit

Joe Seamhead said...

blovey8, that's how I saw it.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Change up is kinda nasty....

But uhm, Zimm, that was too close.. You gotta swing...

I am terrified of birds... I think pigeons are the worst...

blovy8 said...

and don't walk much either MNF

Section 222 said...

JoeS, you don't really believe that was the difference do you? I don't want to belabor this, but why are you guys defending Zim? There's just no excuse for standing still and watching your fly ball, especially in a park as cavernous as Coors, where triples are easy to come by on balls in the gap because the walls are so far away. Watch it as you run like hell. If Harper can do it, everyone can do it. Come on.

And Kobernus did not misplay the ball. He had the angle right, it just died as it hit the base of the wall.

Faraz Shaikh said...

at least it wasn't like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiGUYMqUHOU

Joe Seamhead said...

blovy8, I agree with both of your posts at 11:06 and 11:08

dwb115 said...

Was our homer streak still active leading up to this series?

sometimesitrains said...

well, it would be ironic if our home runs in consecutive series streak ended in Colorado.

David Proctor said...

"I don't want to belabor this, but why are you guys defending Zim?"

Because he's been a very good baserunner throughout his career and deserves the benefit of the doubt because of that. It's very possible he didn't want to lap Kobernus who could not advance past second until fairly late.

Gonat said...

K-rol on!

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Had Ryan been stranded, then I can understand the extra attention.... But he didnt...

Yeah Desi bought him home but it's not like the score would be more than what it is now....

blovy8 said...

tough to see Krol as a "throw in"

JaneB said...

Thank you Other Ian.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Alive

MrsB loves the Nats said...

They are hacking....

Section 222 said...

blovy/JS -- There was no need to pass the runner or even come close to him. Kobernus was around 2B by the time the ball came down. If Zim was halfway to second he could have made it to third easily. Look forward to seeing the replay, but I'll bet he wasn't even to first yet.

blovy8 said...

Krol is living just off the sweet spot of the bat, phew

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Nats 14th in runs 14th in hits 12th in walks.

Joe Seamhead said...

David Proctor, that's exactly what happened. Zim has had his problems this year, but to have folks cause him of being a lallygagger is offensive, not to mention, just plainly wrong.

David Proctor said...

Krol is very impressive. Needs to command his offspeed a bit better because eventually they'll be able to hit the fastball. A lot to like from him though.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

What a damn pitch.... Krol works very fast..... Just a great inning!!!

Uhm, I still want some more runs, please???

Gonat said...

blovy8, he wasn't a throw in but I think he was a player who was involved in some bad publicity that embarrased the team and they were happy to sweeten the deal with him in there. Add to it that they didn't see him as a starter. The Nats converted him to a reliever and the new story is written.

Unknown said...

What's bugs me is we pay e Jax n harren 12 mil on avg for a 5th starter and everyone complains about Werths and Zims salary. Stop paying so much for 5th starters!!!!! Call ups pitch better.

JaneB said...

Ok we need a dinger we hit now. See. You. Later.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Good job by "the other Ian." By the way we got another Ian for HROD.

Drew said...

Man, Krol is bringing it!

Sure wish we'd had him in the pen all year, instead of Cubby.

Gonat said...

Nats need to pound the Rockies bullpen here.

David Proctor said...

Yes, Krol used a certain derogatory term towards gays on his twitter account. A lot of kids use it. Doesn't make it right, but I don't think he was being malicious in using it. The A's weren't pleased with him for that.

David Proctor said...

Jeez, how many times have we hit balls off the wall? I was sure that was gone.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

WHY OH WHY CAN'T OUR FLY BALLS LEAVE THE PARK!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!

Good going AdLa!!!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Why do I feel if Rockies guy hit that it was a homer.

Drew said...

I hope Volstad's act drives them to drink.

Section 222 said...

I'm fine giving him the benefit of the doubt. But there's no doubt. Sorry if you're offended JoeS, but FoF or not, he lollygagged. And the videotape will prove it. You're just making up this possibility of lapping Kobernus. Remember, Kobernus was able to easily score from where he was after the ball dropped. It even looked like he wasn't sure whether the ball was caught or not, so he didn't get all that great a jump. Zim just wasn't close enough to 2B to make it to third, which means he wasn't close to lapping Kobernus either.

Nice frame by Solano on that third strike to the last batter. Impressive inning by Krol.

JaneB said...

David Proctor said...

I'll admit it: I was rooting for Tracy to fail there. If he gets an RBI hit, that might buy him several more months. As is, I think his days are numbered.

Section 222 said...

And there's Rendon's fourth multi-hit game in the six games since he returned plus the last one he played at the beginning of May. And for the record, this is his 14th major league game of the season and he has 15 hits. Espi played 44. He had 25 hits.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Hahahaha David P hahahahahahahah....

And what is the drink ingredients again... I'm going to need it for Tyler Clippard...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

JoeS had Ryan out of the box he would habeen near second when they got to the ball as the runner was home at about that time.

On his double plays he doesnt lollygag, he is just not real fast.

This play the video would say he didnt bust out of the box.

Now Clip needs to pitch better than Storen did last night.

Drew said...

Five doubles in 49 big league at bats.

Unknown said...

Nice Zim!

Joe Seamhead said...

Your opinion deuces, but I have never heard of anyone accuse Ryan of not hustling hard. I think your wrong.By the way, I watched the replay already it doesn't show either of our takes on it. You don't see him admiring his shot, but you also can't see whether he was going to catch Kobernus, but FP clearly states that Kobernus was a factor.Between FP's explanation, and Zimm's reputation, I give him the benefit of the doubt over what's been said here by people that couldn't see anymore than I did.
How about that catch by the laggard Zimmerman?

blovy8 said...

Exactly, not busting it out of the box doesn't equal lollygagging. There's a variety of points in between those two. He's not like guys who give up on a pop foul that's going into the dugout, for instance.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Clip can't find the SZ...

Unknown said...

Ok. End of Zim argument Plz. U might invoke Peric for crying out loud.
