Game 99: Pirates at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
With Rick Eckstein out as hitting coach, the Nationals will move forward under the tutelage of Rick Schu, though the former minor-league coordinator won't arrive in Washington until tomorrow. Whether the move makes any sort of difference at all will be hard to judge tonight, but perhaps the players respond from the wakeup call. They host the Pirates in the first of a four-game series, with right-hander Charlie Morton (1-2, 3.19 ERA) on the mound for Pittsburgh.

Morton is making just his seventh start this season, his sixth year in the major leagues. He has faced the Nats three times in his career, going 0-2 with a 4.11 ERA across 15 1/3 innings pitched. However the Nats respond to the hitting coach change, they will likely need a good deal of runs anyway. Dan Haren (4-10, 5.61) is making the start as he continues to try and turn his season around.

To be fair, Haren is coming off two consecutive solid outings. He allowed two earned runs in five innings at Philly on July 8 and pitched six scoreless frames in Miami on July 13, but both games were losses for the Nats as the offense scored a combined three runs in the two games. The Pirates have scored the least runs of any team in the month of July (47), so perhaps tonight presents an opportunity for Haren.

7:06 p.m. — And we are underway with a ball from Dan Haren to Starling Marte.

7:16 p.m. — Guess it's time to update Andrew McCutchen's career numbers against the Nats. He just sluged a two-run homer to right-center off Haren, who had walked Jordy Mercer moments earlier. So, here you go: In 26-plus career games against the Nats, McCutchen is now hitting .439 with 12 homers, 24 RBI, a .504 on-base percentage, .908 slugging percentage and 1.412 OPS. Nats down 2-0 in the middle of the first.

7:25 p.m. — Well, Bryce Harper did his job as a leadoff man. He drew a walk off Charlie Morton to get things started. And was immediately erased on a fielder's choice by Anthony Rendon, who was then erased on Ryan Zimmerman's 6-4-3 double play. 2-0 Pirates after one.

7:37 p.m. — Morton is making quick work of the Nats so far. He's recorded five straight outs since the Harper leadoff walk, getting four groundballs and a strikeout. Looks like his sinker is working tonight. Still 2-0 after two.

7:49 p.m. — Andrew McCutchen, ladies and gentlemen. 2-for-2, two 2-run homers. So, his up-to-the-second career numbers in 26-plus games against the Nats: .444 AVG, 13 HR, 26 RBI, .509 OBP, .939 SLG, 1.448 OPS. He has the Pirates' only two hits tonight in three innings, but he's given his team a 4-0 lead.

7:54 p.m. — Three innings in the books, and the Nats have yet to get a ball out of the infield against Morton. Eight of the nine outs have come on groundballs, the other a strikeout.

8:04 p.m. — Make it 5-0 Bucs after Russell Martin led off the fourth with a single and Garrett Jones followed with a double to the right-field corner. Not much else to say at this point.

8:20 p.m. — Stop the presses: Haren struck out McCutchen! Pretty remarkable development, if you ask me. Still 5-0 in the middle of the fifth.

8:31 p.m. — Wow, not only did Adam LaRoche hit the ball out of the infield to lead off the bottom of the fifth, he actually hit it out of the park. There goes Morton's no-hitter and shutout on LaRoche's 14th homer of the season. But the Nats squandered a chance to do more damage when Roger Bernadina (pinch-hitting for Haren) struck out with two on and two out. So Haren's final line is: 5 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP, 2 HR. That's pretty much his season in a nutshell. It's 5-1 Pirates after five, with Craig Stammen entering.

9:23 p.m. — The Nats are trying to make this a game again. After two scoreless innings from Stammen, LaRoche and Werth combined to make it a 5-3 game in the seventh. LaRoche was awarded first base after getting struck by a pitch from Morton. Werth then blasted his 13th homer of the season, a two-run shot into the Red Porch. That's Werth's third homer in his last seven at-bats.

9:41 p.m. — And the Pirates get a big insurance run in the top of the eighth. Ian Krol, in a rare poor outing, gave up a single and a walk. Drew Storen nearly got out of the jam, but he uncorked a wild pitch, and even after Ramos retrieved the ball and got it back to him in time, Storen couldn't hang on to make the tag. So it's 6-3 Pirates as the Nats are down to their last six outs.

9:53 p.m. — Now they're down to their last three outs. Though Rendon singled to center to snap an 0-for-15 slump, Zimmerman grounded into his second 6-4-3 double play of the night to end the eighth. It remains 6-3 and most of the 29,200 fans who remain here are wearing black and gold.

10:07 p.m. — Whoa, Werth goes deep for the fourth time in two days, a two-run blast to right that trims the lead to 6-5. That Storen wild pitch really looms large now. It's 6-5 in the 9th.

10:19 p.m. — Oh yikes, with two outs and an 0-1 count on Steve Lombardozzi, Jason Grilli is in serious pain. He's out of the game and reacted like he felt something serious happen to his elbow or shoulder. Vin Mazzaro is now in to finish the at-bat, with the game on the line.

10:20 p.m. — And Mazzaro gets Lombardozzi to ground out to second to end the game. The Nats lose 6-5, their fourth straight and ninth in 11 games. They're three games under .500 for the first time since 2011.

Ryan Zimmerman said that, if the Nats do get it going, it will be up to the players and not Schu.

Why would Schu want this job.

Eugene in Oregon said...

When you think about it, it's a fairly logical move by Mr. Braun. The Brewers are completely out of it, so accept the penalty for the remainder of a meaningless year rather than challenge, lose the appeal in a month or so, and then have to serve the suspension (at least part of it) extending into next season.

phil dunton said...

Rick Schu has some awful career hitting stats! At least he did play professional baseball, as opposed to Eckstein.

Holden Baroque said...

"Why would Schu want this job?"

Rabbit34 said...

I don't need anyone to turn into .300 hitters, I just want them to barrel the ball! A hit ball at least has a chance of doing something good. Maybe Schu can lower our strikeouts and get guys to make more solid contact. That's what a coach can do. A good one anyway.

I guess I was wrong on Rick Eckstein. I thought there was no way Davey would allow his removal but like I said over the weekend the Nats were out-coached in every facet of the game and that didn't escape Rizzo.

Baseball is about results and it will be a wait and see on how and if Schu can positively impact the Nats.

Natsjack, thanks - now the scorecard is already to go.

Couple of posts on the last thread about how often the Nats do--or don't--swing at pitches.

They went from the team with the highest swing rate last year (48.4%) to #22 this year (45.6%).

Tom Veruducci mentions the Nats approach in a piece last month:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130604/dustin-ackley-eric-wedge-sabermetrics/

Funny thing is (in a sad/ironic/infuriating kind of way), Verducci was arguing that the patient approach has gone too far in MLB as a whole, and cites Davey's Nats as a team with a more aggressive approach.

A DC Wonk said...

like I said over the weekend the Nats were out-coached in every facet of the game

Out-coached?! No -- we were out-scored.

Davey's been telling them: be aggressive, swing more.

Verducci shows we went to first to the bottom third in swinging at pitches.

We keep taking called strikes, and a whole lotta called strike threes.

We weren't out-coached. We have a bunch of guys who are way too selective and let too many pitches go by. Werth knows how to do that correctly. Most of the other guys don't.

Kirbs said...

Rabbit the problem is, I swear everytime I see a strikeout, it is looking.

Mick, 24 hours ago, I'd have said no way. However when your manager says that he'd rather be fired than have the hitting coach be fired then I'd be letting down.

I think it's human nature to let down when the boss doesn't care anymore unless you're totally self motivated. Maybe it's an adjustment period for the players and they will pull out of it. I can't imagine they would just flat out give up, but it sure looks like it.

I am afraid that we are going to find out that Rizzo's 3 big acquisitions and one big subtraction completely ruined the clubhouse vibe on this team. B - Lesplatu? what does that mean? Been here, maybe -- I don't know -- 3-4 years -- off and on. I don't live here like so many of you all. In april I was basically run out for predicting a 500 season. Returned off and on -- since then. I suppose you can somehow look up my comments --

Who did you used to be?

Ghost: (yawn) You and Wonk are complete idiots. How old are you?

I'm in my mid-50's and it's clear you're an Os fan.

You promised us you were turning to MASN2 so why don't you do it.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Werth is a true Pro -- and our best player at this time!!

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Werth has had a damn good stretch of baseball... Too bad he is the only 1...

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Lets watch Span put it in the air --

note: what will Carp and FP be talking about mid-sept. Cant wait to listen to it -- its got be funny

NatsFanSinceStart said...

How did we score the two runs? Ive been watching the Orioles game

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Come on Hurdle. Morton is gassed. oh forgot, span is up easy out

BigCat said...

Span has absolutely no pop at all in his bat. Plays with no passion, no intensity etc.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Haha that's "The Answer" the "Key to the World Series"

.250 hitter with OBA close to .299

what a weak weak player

joemktg said...

Big hit. Worst case Harper leads off next inning.

BigCat said...

He doesn't seem to cover the ground in center that he did early in season

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Didn't the Sabermetric people pick the Nats as the overwhelming frontrunner to win the World Series?

And didn't those same genius' predict the Orioles would finish last in the Al East?

Sabermetrics: last refuge of a person who never played baseball

MrsB loves the Nats said...

BigCat - Span had a good battle until the end... Looked like he was trying to do too much there... He swung at 2 balls/fouled off 2 ball, at least that is what it looked like right from my seat...

NatsFanSinceStart said...

tracy: career .236 pinch hitter.

And this we needed to resign for a million a year?

haha

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Rizzo firing Eck is a little weird. Why did he feel he needed to make that move at this time? Do you think Rizzo loses sleep thinking about how his perfect 2012 went to $#$% in 2013? Or is he too dull, stupid and cocky to think reflectively?

David Proctor said...

Oh my, does Krol have a pornstar stache going?

BigCat said...

Yea mrs B. I'm just down on him. On that sac bunt the other night he slowed up and they got him at second. I swear tonight he slowed up on the grounder to first, then was still out when the guy bobbled it.

Anonymous said...

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Rizzo executive office.

OTOH, the Nats are making this one mildly interesting.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

The base running has been bad BigCat... Harp looked like he slowed up his last at bat too....

I can say something about each and every Nat right now, with the exception of Werth....

They all got issues...

BigCat said...

Can't give them anymore

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Ghost - you here????

BigCat said...

Just been a long long disappointing season B

BigCat said...

Frickin storen. Have a clue out there

joemktg said...

dear lord...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Unh... Gotta catch that Storen....

BigCat said...

I like drew, but he is one of the poster boys in this god forsaken season. I don't think he has ever recovered from game 5....... For whatever reason

SCNatsFan said...

Start the fire sale. Figure out who we need next year and sell the rest. These parts just don't mesh.

Where's Abad with the lefty on deck?

BigCat said...

Davey should have lefty in now

pedrocerrano said...

This team has no shame whatsoever

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Storen gets out of it with 1 given up. That hurts.

BigCat said...

Both that pop to Harper and that last one, those guys were dead on them Just got under them

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Did Drew shake up becuz he was scared of contact????

Knoxville Nat said...

Ghost,

Did you receive a private message from our host recently?

David Proctor said...

Not a good day for Ryan.

BigCat said...

Boy we hit into a lot of DP's. nats lady, you got any stats on where we rank in the league on this? Bet top 5

Nats106 said...

Ms B, I said I wasn't going to post anymore tonight, but now you know I'm a liar. I don't think Storen was shirking from contact. He caught the ball in the heel of his glove and really didn't have control of it. Another comment about Storen and recovery from game 5. I still believe Johnson absolutely threw him under the bus when he made the comments a couple of months after the season was over. Maybe Johnson should have said "Well maybe pitching to Molina with 1st open wasn't such a good idea." He didn't. Maybe he's a players coach, but he sure didn't show it on that exchange.

Now....back to my bourbon and ginger. Are we winning yet?

David Proctor said...

We're 2nd to last into double plays grounded into. We've only grounded into 62. Boston leads the group with 82. Source: http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/batting/type/expanded-2

Note: this isn't exactly a good stat. If you notice, many good teams ground into a lot of double plays because they have a lot of men on base.

Secret wasian man said...

Braves come back to beat Mets. 8 games now. Rendon followed by Zimm not working. Those guys are dbl play machines.

NatsFanSinceStart - You are an embarrassment to this team. Please stop posting.

BigCat said...

I think the addition of soriano basically told storen all he needed to know.....regardless of how much smoke rizzo n davey blew. The kid had a fast track to the bigs, was everyone's darling and then had the rug pulled out from under him.

David Proctor said...

How big is the run Drew gave up now?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Man if that run by Storen doesn't hurt now...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Great at bat by Span....

Secret wasian man said...

WERTh trying to,carry this team all by himself. C'mon guys help him out.

BigCat said...

B...... Storens play at home is a very touch one. Normally the pitcher is running full speed. He has the runner barreling down on him. So he's gotta catch the ball , find the runner, find the plate and worry about the possibility of getting his head taken off by the runner also

David Proctor said...

Ramos got a couple of pitches to hit and JUST missed them.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Thanks 106 and Cat.... I couldn't tell from my seat... I recorded the game so I can watch it but I was thinking what the heck... He looked like he got scared and wanted to avoid contact...

But that 1 run or 2 WP really hurt... Difference between extra innings...
