Game 95: Nats at Marlins

The Nationals have lost five of their last six games, scoring more than two runs only once in those five defeats. With one more chance to end the season's first half on a high note, Davey Johnson has decided to shake things up. Whether it works or not, he certainly deserves credit for creativity.

Johnson has Bryce Harper batting leadoff for the first time in his career and Anthony Rendon hitting second. Denard Span is still in the lineup and in center field, but he slides all the way back to seventh after hitting .208 through his first 12 games in July. He hit .235 in the month of June and now holds a season average of .255. It makes you wonder why Span wasn't pulled from the leadoff spot earlier, but here you go.

The Nats' new-look lineup will go up against Marlins' right-hander Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 5.73 ERA). The 23-year-old is making just his third start of the 2013 season and his first against a team other than the Atlanta Braves.

Pitching for the Nats is rookie Taylor Jordan (0-2, 3.45) who is making his fourth career start. He will face the Marlins for the first time after growing up in Merritt Island, Florida.

Enjoy the game...

40 - 45 since game 9. .470 winning percentage. Thats 90.4 percent of this desson to date. 53.46 of the total season. Thats a very long time to be playing poorly and expect to turn things aroung.

Dave Johnson should retire for the good of the team.

Section 222 said...

mick, if you're still searching for those games where Harper led off last year you can stop now. ;-)

Jane Elizabeth said...

But we have won 11 of our last 20 and if you project that winning percentage out over a season.....

Jane Elizabeth said...

Chad Tracy's throw last night was certainly worth the price of admission. I am not sure if I have ever seen one that bad my entire life.

And for those who want to know why Rendon didn't run for Tracy, apparently it was because Zimmerman had already come out of the game in a doubleswitch. They could have done a triple switch, in a sense, and let Rendy play 3rd but apparently, Davey felt that Chad Tracy needed some work at 3rd.

David Proctor said...

I didn't know we could just disregard games. If we can disregard hot starts, let's do it for other teams too. If we can do that, the Braves are a game under .500. Hmm.

David Proctor said...

" Davey felt that Chad Tracy needed some work at 3rd."

Well I guess Tracy proved his point...lol...

Late to the show here as there is no way I am reading 500+ comments from the previous post.

Saw the pitches that Harper felt were outside and especially in the 8th inning it looks like the ump got that right. Still agree with Ghost that Harper seems to be getting picked on a little but it sure hurt our team to not have him up in a key spot.

I wonder if Harper went to Davey or if this is just Davey finally getting things figured out about how poor Span has been leading off?

Like many others, I have not given up rooting for a team I started with in 60 some years ago but I find it hard to figure out just how they will flip some switch and win 10-12 games in a row. I realize the Braves did, the Blue Jays have done it and since winning 11 in a row they have tumbled a great bit. I am hoping we will do it was well but I just don't see how.

Go Nats!!

sjm308 said...

I also wondered why Rendon was not used there. I am guessing that got plenty of discussion both during and after the game last night. Seriously, did Davey actually say he wanted to give Tracy work at 3rd? Wow.

nats guy said...

The hot start was 9 games. Hmmmm. You guys will be saying if we could just win 20 out of the last 3 we could pull this off. Nice to be optimistic but facts is facts.

Amazing that NL and many others are finally ready to see what has been there all year...starting with Spring Training Country Club Davey Ran......Davey is the problem. He should be fired...he is too old and too slow in the brain to keep up with game. Love him for his body of baseball work but that is no reason to let him run this franchise into the ground with stupid moves like "getting Tracey some work! Danny will come around......Just endless stupid moves by a guy who has let his ego and age turn him into a joke.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

6Th inning calls were the bigger problems.

My gripe with all umps is tgey are so inconsistent on balls and strikes.

It is not rocket science. It is either over the plateor not. Too high or not. Too lw or not.

Just call all pitches correctly or at least the same.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Did he say why Rendon didnt play second and lombo move to left after the heave ho?

Rabbit34 said...

Punch less and pathetic. Hopefully maybe today we can put a couple of hits together. But, keep the faith. With a little luck maybe we can finish better than 10 games under .500. Heck of a team we have...heck of a team.

Anonymous said...

It's easy to say "fire Davey" at this point, and there are argumenta that can be made for doing so (among others, seeing if Randy Knorr really does have the stuff managers are made of). Sometimes firing a manager in midstream can lif up a team--but it can also send a team the other way.

Case in point--in 2001, the Red Sox, after being tied or in the lead e first half of the season, went 8-11 in late July and early August and fell five games behind (the Yankees, of course). At this point, manager Jimy Williams, who had his detractors in and out of the clubhouse, was fired and replaced by pitching coach Joe Kerrigan. The Sox played decently for about ten days, then lost nine straight and 14 of 15, and never were in contention again that season.

Careful what you wish for. You might get it.

JayB said...

Nope Davey did not do an interview on MASN as far as I can find.....his ego will not let him face reality that he is not the smartest man in baseball anymore and he is just leaving off reputation and stories from 20 years ago.

Section 222 said...

Need to get Tracy some work at 3B? In the 10th inning of a tie game? Really Davey? WODL, do you have a source for this quote?

Zimmerman had not come out of the game in a doubleswitch before the (non)decision was made not to pinchrun for Tracy. Davey made the doubleswitch once he knew who had made the last out of the inning and decided to put Stammen, the new pitcher, in that spot. Davey could have pinchrun for Tracy, or, even better, pinch hit for Hairston, with Rendon, then left Rendon in the game in whatever position he wanted to.

JayB said...

All we need is a manager who manages to win games for the rest of the year. Not to build his own ego or those of his pet players (Danny E). We need a guy who is going to play the best players each day for the last 75 games or so and see what they are made of. If this fold, fine....I am not a big fan of Rizzo's over estimating his drafted guys. How many AZ draft picks are we going to run through here as a favor to them on their way out of baseball.....Harrison is just the latest in a long long list.

hiramhover said...

Span drew 2 BBs last night, inc. his lead off appearance. There are good arguments for moving him down in the order, but the timing today just smacks of doing something so Davey can say he's doing something.

Not a move that inspires a lot of confidence.

JayB said...

222 you are assuming Davey was still awake past 10 PM.....no hiding it anymore....he is too old and is not thinking of winning games...he is thinking of how he can be a extreme contrarian to prove he is smarter than everyone else!

Davey acts like a cadaver. He couldn't motivate a fly. The team needs a manager who will kick some butt. The players love him because he leaves them to their own demise. This team needs to be shaken up in the worst way.

I didn't read the 500+ comments of the game thread last night, I hope Haren got some proper props!

phil dunton said...

The big question isn't...why was Chad Tracy at third base for "defensive purposes" at the end of the game last night. The real question is....why is he still on the roster?

NatsLady said...

Wonk, yes, he did. Everyone noticed (!). Believe it or not, Davey took him out at exactly the right time, and didn't get greedy for another inning. I expect that was his plan with the back end of the bullpen well-rested.

Now Haren will get another long break. What's not clear is when/whether Detwiler will be back. Taylor Jordan may be around for a while, but Ross O has also made his case.

JayB said...

NatsLady said...

However, I DO disagree--strongly--with your constant posts on the Spring Training regime, JayB. Davey ran spring training exactly the same way this year as last year when the Nats were 14-4 out of the box. The Nats also swept their first series (albeit it was the Marlins). I have lots of criticisms of Davey, but handling spring training isn't one of them.

Haren probably has a lot to teach Jordan. Even if his body can't always do what he wants it to, he's had a long career. You can see Jordan is going to be a "control" type pitcher, not a Stras type with great stuff, and a 98 mph fastball.

The umps won't give him a break on anything close and when the ump wants "face time" you get into it with Bryce.

I'm not saying he was baited but when that pitch occurred by Fernandez in the 1st strikeout I immediately said it was outside and Bryce was visibly upset and should have been. It was 3 to 4 inches off the black actually.

On the 2nd K, the 3rd strike pitch was on the black and the ump didn't give Bryce any makeup call.

My understanding was that the pitch Stanton hit wasn't even a strike! You gotta give credit to Stanton on that, not blame Soriano. You don't want to walk the leadoff guy/tying run on purpose.

A DC Wonk said...

NL..you know as well as I do that you have spent 10 10K words singing the praises of Davey and Rizzo the past 6 months

JayB, that was me.

I saw a franchise that was dismal and a farm system that was in shambles -- and a guy like Jimbo alienating players (anyone remember the Cordero incident), getting involved with (or at least negligence that allowed) massive fraud with the Dominican league, and (Jimbo again) signing players like Millege, Elija Dukes, and falling in love with guys like Austin Kearns (who hit a combined .205, approx, in his last two seasons with the Nats) -- all leading to a team so bad it held open-tryout for starting pitches in spring training (Mike Bascik anybody?), and two consecutive 100+ loss seasons.

Then I saw a team increase by 10+ wins per season three years in a row, and win 98 games (how many other teams have done that?), and saw Rizzo win Executive of the Year.

Am I in the tank for Rizzo? D@mn straight I am.

I would have to wonder about anyone criticizing Bryce other than getting thrown out.

Never heard why he didnt play.

MNF @ 308 - D Span says hello....

Secret wasian man said...

Ok werth. Just like the Philly game. Lets do it

NatsLady said...

Werth looks like he is in serious pain. Did you see that wince?

Secret wasian man said...

Wow the Ump kills us again.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He said when he had trouble in Minnesota his coaches could fix it. Talking about what Span said

Secret wasian man said...

Needed a scrappy single. Not a grand slam.

Section 222 said...

Wonder all you want Ghost. I'm not saying Harper is responsible for the Nats' woes. But he's not perfect, nor is Ramos, nor any other player you seem to think is off limits. For whatever reason, he did not hustle on that play and the runner took the extra base. You'd think he of all people would understand you can't sit back on that hit and hope the SS makes the play.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I do say hit it where it is pitched. But we need to hit either to right or left. Hitting to center is not working.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Are you talking about Ozuna's single?

Drew said...

A DC Wonk:

Jean Segura, the Brewers shortstop, is hitting .320 with 11 homers and 27 stolen bases.

If he qualifies as a rookie (150 ABs last year) he'll get a lot of votes.

Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller is 9-6 with a 2.92 ERA.

They'll be the top competition for Puig and Rendon. (I don't think the D-Backs' Patrick Corbin is a rookie.)

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Come on Buffalo that was not that hard.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Sect222, for a 20 year old I give him a pass on it. You can criticize for that play sure but be fair.

Rabbit34 said...

Well, we're hanging in with this last-place team. So, things are getting better!

Not sure I like this move...

He doesn't qualify.

I'd forgotten that Shelby Miller was a rookie.

Thanks,

Come on Drew... Throw something for a DP....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The bloopers are better than deep flies to center.

Secret wasian man said...

This should be storens last game as a nat

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Not liking falling behind. That is a recipe for disaster.

Section 222 said...

I am being fair Ghost. You just said as much. You're the one who is being unfair by "wondering" about anyone who criticizes Harper. Oh, and have you forgotten letting his temper getting the best of him last night? He's a superstar and no longer a rookie. I don't think at this point he gets a pass for anything. That's not to say that I'm not really, really happy that he's on our team. :-)

Good lord Drew takes a long time between pitches.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The all do one handed catches, but I hate it.

Drew said...

Wonk: You're right on Segura. The cutoff is 140 at bats.

Gerritt Cole has four quick wins for the Pirates, but Miller of the Cards and Jose Fernandez of the Marlins have much better ERAs.

Without Segura, it could well be Puig, Miller or Rendon.

Atta boy drew.

U were saying SWM?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Did Harvey pitch more than enough not to qualify?

Faraz Shaikh said...

Scott, weren't you the one who said 'not sure I like this move'? What are you calling out SWM for?

Secret wasian man said...

Great job Ian. Liv the excitement. And a bad call also awful really.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Span, you have to do your job! Once again you failed.

Unknown said...

Span. U suk

Secret wasian man said...

Span is a tradgedy. Play Bernie.

Section 222 said...

Hasn't Davey learned yet that Span is lousy at sacrificing bunts?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Span is such a poor bunter. We are terrible as a team in doing the little things.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Wonk, Segura missed it by 18 ABs from last year.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Idk why Span bunted... He has hit the ball well today...

Secret wasian man said...

Thanks Dara's.

Secret wasian man said...

Thanks thanks faraz.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Bunting falls under Eck so why. Would any of us be surpised?

Section 222 said...

Wait, Eck teaches bunting? How do you know that MNF?

Secret wasian man said...
