Game 94: Nats at Marlins

USA Today Sports Images
Losers of four of their last five, the Nationals will send Dan Haren (4-10, 6.00 ERA) to the mound in Miami Saturday night to face rookie standout and N.L. All-Star Jose Fernandez (5-5, 2.83). Fernandez has yet to lose at Marlins Park and will be making his first start against the Nats. He last pitched on July 7 in St. Louis and allowed three earned runs for the first time since May.

Washington took an ugly loss in the series opener on Friday night, watching Stephen Strasburg falter with the worst start of his young career. Miami has won two straight games after losing their previous five after a terrific month of June. Haren will take a stab at the Fish in his seventh career start against the franchise. He holds a 1-4 record with a 3.43 ERA in 39 1/3 total innings vs. the Marlins.

Anthony Rendon gets the night off with Steve Lombardozzi playing at second. Other than that change, the lineup is the same as it was on Friday.

Enjoy the game...

I'm not being optimistic, I'm stating facts. Worse teams than us have turned it around. 5 back of a playoff spot with 68 to play is nothing. Obviously, we have to play better. Right now, this IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Let me make that clear.

But it's not over.

NatsLady said...

Rizzo can't fire Davey--sorry, won't happen. But he can speak to Werth, tell him to keep the kid in check, tell him Davey isn't going anywhere but make sure McCatty and Randy Knorr are actually running games. Davey needs to become a figure head. Take him out of the decision process.

Anonymous said...

As is often the case, I agree with NatsLady both about the inexplicable non-use of Rendon and the handling of the pitchers at the end of the game. The throw by Tracy was unbelievable but why was he in there in the first place!

Very hard loss.

Secret wasian man said...

NOT THE SAME PLAYERS coolhand. mikey morse is gone. remember him? the guy who could actually hit the ball now and then. Soriana not getting bashed enough here. He just comes in a puts a ball on a tee for Stanton. did he not know who was up? did he not care?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I hate Fox . Why no pitch track.

I listened as I driving. charlie and Davey said strike zone moved suddenly for Harper as what was called strikes for him were balls before that.

Since I didnt see I trust Chsrlie and Dave.

As i have said for years I would love to spend a day with the head of umps. Eatching games at 2 though 1 am, having me tell why the strike zone floats during a game.

Wish i had technology to overlay pitches to show how pitches in same spot differently.

It is not rocket science but I watch a lot of games and tthe strike zone is just poirly called in all games.

I decided I want elctric zones for batters. The umps are getting worse as technolgy is getting bettet.

You guys want a fun fact?

The Nats are 16-23 vs. under .500 teams and 31-24 vs. teams over .500.

Ian Desmond felt Bryce Harper's ejection was a major factor. "You gotta stay in the game. For your team."

I have a feeling Desi is going to sit down and have a chat with Bryce.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

So in other words... We play to the level of our opponents...

We are gonna beat the Dodgers after the break...

Secret wasian man said...

Welcome WODL. Did you see the game? or whatever it was. There is nothing to be positive about. except Haren. Even FP was horrible.

jeffwx said...

The Nats are not done...but they gonna have to address the problems, and not ignore them this time.
Shake it up...give Davey a good reason to take a job in the front office.

Secret wasian man said...

Really IAN? REALLY? how about you gotta earn your paycheck but hitting the ball now and then. WOW these players on this team are really pissing me off. SHUT UP DESMOND>

Anonymous said...

Rock bottom? That comes after the break when the Nats have to play the Dodgers, Pirates and Tigers and finally fall out of any pretense of contention. All year this team has acted as if just by showing up after having had baseball's best record in 2012 the other team was just going to sigh, raise their hands and accept losing two out of three.

And hey, look, the Dodgers just pulled ahead of us in the WC race. At least the lowly White Sox saved us from the indignity of also being passed up by the Phillies tonight. So there's that.

David Proctor said...

Desmond has more than earned his paycheck.

NatsLady said...

No, it's not over, not even if we lose tomorrow and so do the Reds and we go into the break under .500 and 8 back.

If that happens, you will have to see the character of this team. Is Desi a real leader? Can Werth manage the team behind the scenes? Will someone work with Ryan about his strikeouts with RISP??? Teach Span and Bernadina how to make a sacrifice bunt (which is different than a drag bunt for a hit). Get rid of Tracy? And many et ceteras.

I feel very bad for Haren, who could have used the win and deserved it.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

A lot of good comments and a lot of stupid comments. First of all, you don't walk Stanton to start the 9th. It was a bad pitch. That's it. You don't put the tying run on base in that situation.

Bryce Harper as mentioned lost his cool and is best served to have Manny Acta, uh, I mean Davey Johnson argue those pitches. I feel his pain. It's a replay of those painful years of the Manager with his mouth taped shut. That strike 3 pitch wasn't close.

I would have pinch run with a starter which probably would have been Gio in that situation and if not him then Rendon. Big blunder by Davey. Game on the line and you leave your slowest runner in there? Besides that, it was a lousy bunt.

With Hairston's spot up and as poor as he is RH/RH you have to pinch-hit with Rendon.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Harper on the other hand just say nothing despite the ump making poor calls

A clearly bothered Davey says he's changing the lineup tomorrow. He was going to wait until after the break. Not anymore.

What can be done? Is he going to move Span down? I can't think of anything more that he can do with the lineup.

ExposedinDC said...

Like I said, I have been a fan of this franchise for too long to give up, but if anybody thinks this team the way it is currently put together and currently managed will flip a switch and all of a sudden become a win 4 out of 5 ball club is delusional... Way to many cracks in the armor and way to many questionable decisions from management.

NatsLady said...

OK, we are different people, Mrs. B. I do fault Bryce. He worked himself up into a state watching that video, and telling his teammates he was right.

And, BTW, where WERE his teammates to tell him to cool down and make sure he didn't lose it???? Or his manager????? Or his bench coach??????

Ian is right that Bryce should not have blown up, but where were you, Ian, when Bryce was getting himself INTO that state?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

GoSM - you and I will disagree on walking Stanton... Their best player who has been a Nats killer... And considering who was afterwards...

But that wasnt where the game was lost... So whatever...

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said...

Secret wasian man: I know it is not the same team. I remember Mike Morse well. I think he and Bo Porter were big parts of last years team. Both are gone.

I havent said this on the here but my dad and I agree with no Morse, this team lost a great bat and great personality.

Question to everyone: What can be done with this team? What would you do as GM to make this team better?

NatsLady said...

Changing the lineup??? That ain't going to make no difference. Span got on base via the walk in the last two games, just like he is supposed to. Davey is spinning, he has no idea what to do, so he "changes the lineup." Useless.

I like FP and I know he reads NatsInsider so he will not like my "turncoat" comment but it's true. While I have been accused of being a turncoat because I attend other games I do that as a baseball fan but no team has my allegiance other than the Nats.

David Proctor said...

NL, for all you know, his teammates did tell him to calm down. That doesn't mean those emotions didn't resurface when the umpire screwed him over again. He clearly lost his temper and didn't think straight. I doubt that they just sat by.

That's the problem I think some of us have. If we don't see it on TV, we assume it didn't happen. I don't know that someone did say something, but we can't say they didn't either.

I completely disagree about Harper. He absolutely did the right thing. Somebody needs to tell the poster boy umpire nepotism that he needs to lose about fifty pounds and pay attention. Davey just sits there and does nothing. Davey should have been the one in there getting thrown out but he just stands there.

And the double switches are stupid. People act like those are free. They aren't they cost you a player and usually aren't worth the mental activity he puts into them.

Anonymous said...

Let's not forget that Ian was also the guy who claimed a couple of weeks back that because the Nats got two runners on in the bottom of the 9th and brought the potential tying run to the plate before losing by three was "progress."

That's not a leader talking. That's an excuse maker.

Frankly, I'm glad Harper did what he did. He's about the first player on this team since Matthues smashed his hand to show any indication at all that he actually CARES.

Anonymous said...

William O - About Davey: right on, dude.

NatsLady said...

David, you are right that we don't know what happens inside. But Harper was out there on the railing stewing and gesturing. Now, maybe after the cameras were off an arm came out and dragged him inside and said "Cool off, kid." Maybe.

Ghost, you may not like FP "sugar coating," but I think he's a pretty astute observer. I don't also don't think he says everything he knows.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Span is a disaster on offense. He finally gets a couple of walks but then gets caught stealing. He can't bunt reliably. It is difficult to articulate just how bad a lead-off hitter he has been and he is not going to get better because his fundamentals are not good.

Rizzo had to have this guy and only he knows why, but it was horrible karma bringing this guy in after Harper had earned the center field position. Rizzo was responsible for Chad Tracy. He was responsible for refusing to trade Storen when he had real trade value. He has had some achievements but his approach was fundamentally flawed, He had a 98 game winner and screwed it by bringing in a new, outside starter, which was bad enough, but the guy he brought in is a terrible hitter and the last thing Washington needed was the worst lead-off hitter in baseball to take us to the World Series.

Steve Walker said...

Folks, it's over. The Nats aren't coming back this year. They need to give up their delusions of grandeur and start planning for 2014. William O. Douglas L.--Davey would have had to be an Olympic sprinter to get out there before Harper got himself tossed. And you think it was "absolutely the right thing" to remove himself from the lineup voluntarily? So he didn't come to bat in a tie game? What positive did it accomplish? I guess he showed up that umpire, eh?

Hitting a homer in your next at bat is the revenge not throwing an immature fit which accomplishes nothing.

Time to head to bed when the level of discussion reaches this point.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Desmond and Zimmerman seem to begin their at bats with 2 strikes against them. And who is going to talk to Harper? Maybe Rendon or Ramos? There is nobody else in the line-up playing worth a damn at all. I am so sick of hearing all the bitching and moaning about Desmond not being in the All Star game. He is way too erratic and flawed at the plate.

NatsLady said...

Well, I'm not MIck, but no, I don't walk Stanton, because LoMo could just as easily hit one and game over. Soriano was going to blow a save sooner or later. Just like Stras was going to melt down. Those things happen. Good teams overcome them. 7-3 in the 3rd inning is not insuperable. 1-1 in the 10th inning is not insuperable.

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said...

The nats are my team. I will support them.

I know this isnt the NFL but something needs to happen in order for this team to win the east or get a wild card spot. If a coach gets fired/quits or a major trade happens, so be it.

It seems this group of players and these coaches cant get this team moving in the right direction.

Good night.

If Harper has problems with the ump, he has plenty of opportunities to talk about it. But the ump wins when you get thrown out without a chance to help the team win.

Ha! Jim is older than me but I've known Jim for a long time going back to his days in Chicago and I had a lot of respect for his baseball knowledge. He was never going to work out with the Nats given his relationship with Werth. Like I said many times, Werth runs the clubhouse.

It is one game. That is garbage that Harper is supposed to roll over and let fat slobs like Wendelstadt intentionally torture him for sport. If you don't call the guy on it, then he is just going to do it again. You have to embarrass umps publicly, so that their family and friends understand just how bad they are, otherwise nothing changes because MLB truly does not care about the umpiring which is the worst of all the major sports. It is the same with judges....

It was a horrible pitch. He had him 1-2. That pitch should have been in a biter in the dirt but you don't intentionally walk him. You get him to expand and get himself out. Haren did a great job on him.

Here's the funny thing looking at Pitch F/X that the HR pitch to Stanton was a few inches above the strike zone. Any way, credit to Stanton. Soriano threw him a 94 heater. I would've gone slider in the dirt.

Now - I will agree, GoSM, that in the 1-2 case, I would throw something intentionally in the dirt or off the plate (which we saw Desi bite on a lot today).... Bt I wouldn't even have wanted to test Stanton in a 1 run game, in the bottom of the 9th...

And NL - I remember Lannan being solid and more productive than off... So the good nights he is having this year, aren't surprising to me...

Fernandez got 3 outside strike calls and 2 of them were on Harper. How do you explain that?

Haren was painting the outside all night and got 2 calls but the ump missed 2 others. It was there for some and not there for others.

Fernandez only had 1 missed strike call and overall was a +2. Haren was a +1 on the night so the K zone for the starters was close to fair.

Why do the bad calls seem to happen to Harper?

According to that chart the ball was 3 inches above the strike zone and was the highest velo of all of his pitches he threw to Stanton in that AB. The movement was good on it. I don't have the scouting report on Stanton but I don't throw him a fastball.

I think sometimes it's credit to the batter and that's one of those times. Not a horrible pitch in a 1-2 count but I go back to the slider in the dirt to get him to expand. He can't hit a HR on that.

This team is a disaster from Span to Davey. Davey has lost control of his team. When players are punching lockers snd getting kicked out of games. Also when a team digreses from the previous year the manager has got to go. Span is a bango that can't steal or bunt. They need Stanton and move Harper back to center field. And a new manager that's not knorr I dont him because he's part of this mess.

I don't know about you, but I saw that issue with Harper and the ump coming a mile away. But no one in the dugout did? I mean, I am the Swami, but it was plain as day. The time to nip that was after the first time- look the kid in the eye and tell him the game is close, suck it up, we need you- and again right before he goes up there. Everyone too wrapped up in themselves? Too busy mugging for the camera and throwing seeds? And as for calling him out publicly- I thought that was supposed to happen privately. I do think that the LameDuck manager seems to be having leadership problems and perhaps Jayson needs to take it in hand. The players must stick together during this time where nothing seems to go right. Easy to blame the pitchers or Bryce, but once again- risp, no offense. Same tune.

Another_Sam said...

The issue isn't umpires. Or ejections. Or errors. Or closers. Or . .. Or . . . Or . .. It's scoring one run in 10 innnings. You guys have surely already explored this. Even agains a Koufax or a Pascual [old Senators reference] we fans are entitled to more than one run in 10 innings.

"Here's the situation the Nationals have put themselves in: After dropping three of four in Philadelphia, they now have to take two of three in Miami or else go into the All-Star break one game over the .500 mark (at best). Considering they were four games over at the start of the week, that would be a significant disappoint."

above is Mak Z' s opening quote going into this series. It is very astute an accurate. Now after 2 losses, what does this all mean for the future of this very disappointing and mediocre franchise?

The only untouchable players on this team in terms of trades are Bryce, Rendon, Gio, J Zim, Stras, Desi. Everyone else has to be considered as trade material for the sake of the future. Ramos l would hang on too and if Werth's contract is impossible to unload, that is fine, he is still can play.

If it means trading Clip, Soriano or Storen to upgrade the team's offense in the future, you have to consider it. Their are prospects out there on the level of a Desi or a Morse, both players were obtain via trade if we all remember when Nats were sellers.

R Zim, is a nice young man and i appreciate all he has done since his rookie year, but I am convinced he is vastly over rated, not a prime time player when you need him and should be considered part of any deal while he still is batting over 270. I know that will not happen, and this is where blind loyalty destroys franchises for many seasons..

This is what I think will happen over the break...probably nothing...the Nats spin will be they will try to make run because they have the pieces and will go until the trading deadline. By that time, they will be well over 10 games back in in third place with the Mets right behind them.

Privately, I believe Rizzo knows he has some dead weight on this team and it is not capable of winning. So, at deadline, Nats will be big time sellers for future prospects. This may be the best thing for the future of the Nationals.

mick said...

my prediction in may of 85 losses looks like reality now

mick said...

when I say Werth can play, that is assuming he is healthy...he is missing half a season a year...he will be 1 year older next season too. Nats may be in a worse place than we think with Werth and R Zim's contracts, this why major deals must be made by trading deadline for prospects and decent young players or Nats could be headed back to below 500 for many seasons. This is not a LOD, this is reality. if anyone can refute this with facts, please tell me what they are?

This team is so hard to watch. They are just plain boring. It is the same everyday starting with Span - weak grounder, pop out or called third strike. I am tired of hearing how many runs Span saves us. His refusal to dive for balls cost us a game against Phillie last week. After Span we have Desmond who will be swininging out of his shoes. Then we have Harper who has trouble with outside pitches. Zim will take a called first strike and then swing at an outside pitch to go 0 and 2. ALR will hit the ball into the shift for an out. I could go on and on but this post is boring enough just like this team.

Our pitching is adequate. If Rizzo trades a prospect for some middling starting pitcher he should be fired. His tinkering with the team has already cost us dearly this year.

If I am the GM I would focus on rebuilding the bench. Note to Rizzo: We not winning because we are not hitting.

mick said...

m...exactly right... focus has to be on offense then middle relief, however, Rizzo is in a catch 22...the only players of immediate value to other contending teams are our relief pitchers..

Rizzo has to be smart here

I watched some key moments on DVR and looked at Brooks Baseball graphs. Looks like Harper had a beef on the 6th inning K, but not the 8th. And I have no idea what it gains him or anyone to argue and get tossed, or how Davey could have made it out there to stop him. Hope he learned a lesson. When he got tossed in Pgh, it wasn't his fault. This time it was.

Totally don't understand Davey's moves. Where was Rendon? He could have pinch run for Tracy, and played third. Or pinch hit for Hairston (that's the real head scratcher, we could have won the game with a base hit there.) And couldn't Krol have gone an inning or two before you turn to pitch till you drop Stammen? Double switching out Zim seems like a very extreme move going into an extra inning game. Rigglemanesque. It really does seem like Davey is asleep at the switch. Maybe a few days rest will help him. Hope he doesn't have to work too hard at the ASG.

Here's my question on the pitch fx charts. If you look at the individual charts, the pitch to Harper in the 6th was well outside the zone. But it was right "on the black" on the strike zone map for the game that shows the strikezone that most umps call against LH batters. Shouldn't players be aware that they have to protect the strikezone that most umps call?

as far as I know Harper cost us the game.

just saw Jose Fernandez's reaction to Stanton HR. Why is he acting like a kid watching his first game at a stadium and his favorite player hit a HR?

Mick,

Actually they had put themselves in the postion in Philly to have sweep this series in Miami. The season effectively ended on Friday but was confirmed yesterday. You could see it in most of the players body language. They are wupped.

222, if you read my game post, you will see I asked all the same questions.

I don't see how Rizzo can fire Davey. But he sure can go to his office and shout to the roof of Marlins Park, WHY WASN'T RENDON IN THIS GAME??????? Can't you manage the Kid's temper?

And if Davey says, why don't you manage the team, Rizzo can say, resignation accepted...LOL

Sorry NL, I read some of the posts this morning, but didn't go back and read the game thread. Thought it would be too depressing.

I'm really curious what's up with Davey and Krol. Seems like he just forgets about the guy who has been one of the most effective relievers we have. Maybe Krol needs to leave a note on Davey's desk like Burnett did.

Hope they can take today's game. Going into the break with a 4 game losing streak and under .500 would be pretty awful. Lots of pressure for Kid Jordan.

NatsLady said...

222, no I meant my blog post.

NatsLady said...

I don't see that much difference between .500 and one game under. Kid Jordan should just pitch his game. This game is not the important one; what is important is what happens after the break.

we should have that beer sooner than later, lol

Nats lady... I think 1 game over as opposed to 1 game under is significant...however, it may not matter...the body language I see in the club house is all on needs to know about this club

nats guy is spot on

I did not sleep well last night I was so livid... Yeah 222, NL and I started 'screaming' the same thing...

Didnt care 1 but about Rendon playing in so many straight games, he should have been bought in... Idk why DJ keeps going to C Tracy... He is a waste of a roster spot... But once again yesterday, we had our chances and didnt take advantage of them...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

David - where do you see the line up?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Never mind DP - I saw it... Figured he would switch Desi and Rendon too...

Not sure I like Harper leading off... But we will see..

Harper is 2 for 18 with six strikeouts in five games and hitting .196 (9 for 46) with one homer and six RBIs in July.
I'm not sure that I understand this either when looking at the above stats.

Jane Elizabeth said...

You don't base your line-up on the past five games. Harper walks more than anyone else on the team and is the best hitter.

I've been thinking about the LH bats. It's true, the zone is bigger on FX which is whack, but it is what it is. Our righties are batting MUCH HIGHER avg than lefties...which makes me think: "why have so mant lhb in the lineup?"

The right vs lefty stuff doesn't hold up. Our righties hit higher vs righties anyways.

So:

Move Bryce to center. Hairston to left. Rendon to 3rd, Zimmerman to first. Add another righty bat ASAP. Span needs to be traded. As a def n pitch built team that OF bat is critical. If I see span as lead off I will go bonkers! Ugh!

if I am not mistaken, we are due to face Kershaw, Greinke, and Ryu next weekend.

Why do u think Harper is our best hitter? He's not. No stats say so. He's a hole va lhp too.

Check out this article about the "lefty strike zone." Sounds like hitters are aware of this. Someone send it to Bryce?

I like blowing up the lineup. The team is in a funk. Might as well try something.

WODL, .196 for the month of July isn't for only five games.Don't mean to split hairs, but with a RHP starting I just find the timing curious.Davey knows best, eh?

The reasoning behind the #nats lineup today: highest OBP guys up top. See what happens. Simple as that.

section 222, done. just tweeted the article to bryce.

I assume that the game starts at 1 today. I wonder why there is not a Game 95 entry.
