Game 94: Nats at Marlins

USA Today Sports Images
Losers of four of their last five, the Nationals will send Dan Haren (4-10, 6.00 ERA) to the mound in Miami Saturday night to face rookie standout and N.L. All-Star Jose Fernandez (5-5, 2.83). Fernandez has yet to lose at Marlins Park and will be making his first start against the Nats. He last pitched on July 7 in St. Louis and allowed three earned runs for the first time since May.

Washington took an ugly loss in the series opener on Friday night, watching Stephen Strasburg falter with the worst start of his young career. Miami has won two straight games after losing their previous five after a terrific month of June. Haren will take a stab at the Fish in his seventh career start against the franchise. He holds a 1-4 record with a 3.43 ERA in 39 1/3 total innings vs. the Marlins.

Anthony Rendon gets the night off with Steve Lombardozzi playing at second. Other than that change, the lineup is the same as it was on Friday.

Enjoy the game...

Clip pitching. Hairston in LF.

mick said...

2 good calls, Bryce that was a strike and close enough to hit...good call at 2nd...Bryce just went down a notch in my book

this is game 8 since the full line up is back..simply no excuse for this, none what soever

mick said...

question...where is Clip for 8th??

NatsLady said...

Clip doesn't get the high strike.

David Proctor said...

That was a strike on the last pitch by clip. A little high, but a strike. We're not going to get any close calls anymore tonight though.

jeffwx said...

Why doesn't TCM have pitch track.

I read the news today, oh boy
about a lucky Dan who pitched the game
And though the news was rather sad.
I just had to laugh.
I saw the pitch track

mick said...

got it

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Was that 3-2 pitch by Klip a strike???

Holden Baroque said...

Top of the zone, maybe.

jeffwx said...

except for NL, your comments are not making sense.

Knoxville Nat said...

Late to the party and I'm blacked out here in Knoxville. So reading the posts, did Harper get tossed for arguing balls and strikes? Was it real bad or Harper showing some frustration?

Holden Baroque said...

Yes, Knoxville, he did.

jeffwx said...

I'm with you, Knoxville..what does it take to get some coherent game time commentary

Holden Baroque said...

It wasn't the worst call we've seen all week, and I haven't seen most of the game, so I don't know if that's been a strike tonight, but it looked about 2 baseballs off the plate to me.

mick said...

nice play by desi

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Whew.... Thanks Adam...

NatsLady said...

No, Fernandez didn't pitch scoreless... he has it backwards--again!

mick said...

it was a strike to Bryce...he is not seeing the ball, the pitch Bryce swung at on strike 2 was illustrates he is not seeing the ball at all ..Bryce had no business arguing

David Proctor said...

Uhh...did FOX just switch for anyone else?

PLEASE, I don't care about the stupid murder trial. STOPPPPPP!!!

OK, they put the game in a window in the upper right corner.
Jayson Werth is up.
Sound is from the trial.

jeffwx said...

What the heck is going on ???

Holden Baroque said...

Zimmerman found not guilty.

Knoxville Nat said...

Well here in TN we still have the Cards and the Cubs. And if anyone cares the Cubs are up 6 to 2 in the top of the 8th.

Can we please switch to the Nats game!

Holden Baroque said...

Lombardozzi swung at a pitch in the dirt that hit his foot. He's out on strikes.

NatsLady said...

Lombo strikes out (I think). .At any rate, he's back in the dugout. Ramos is up.

Holden Baroque said...

Ramos up, takes strike one. Tracy on deck.

jeffwx said...

What a line by Crawford

Ramos struck out. Up to Rafi now.

Holden Baroque said...

Ramos K's. Tucking it up here, boss.

mick said...

so Nats have to do this 1-0

Why do you put lombo ahead of ramos

How did they acquit that Zimm guy ???

Tracy singles, Span bunts into a FC. 1 out, Span on first.

NatsLady said...

Tracy with an actual hit. Then out on a bad bunt by Span. Span now on first, though which is better speed. Very bad that Harper got ejected, no one to pinch run for Tracy.

Holden Baroque said...

Of course, Mick, you have to consider the source, with that song.

NatsLady said...

Desi with a single. Runners on 1st and 2nd, one out.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

smh Span. Come on. You ask him to play small ball and he just cost the Nats the go ahead run as Tracy scores on that.

Holden Baroque said...

OK, Let's leave Hannity and his ilk outside.

Back to the game, folks.

Desmond singles to right, Span to second.

NatsLady said...

WIld pitch. Span to 3B. Hairston up, can he cash it in???

Holden Baroque said...

Dubious "strike" one there.
Wild pitch, both runners move up.

jeffwx said...

yes....back to the game....
movie is ovahhhhhhh!!!!!

jeffwx said...

well...i pitched the wrong time to turn on the ball game
strike 3

NatsLady said...

He calls that low strike again.

Holden Baroque said...

Hairston is hitting for Harper, who got tossed, you'll recall.

He pulls a couple of liners, but foul.

Almost another WP. Nice save.

And Hairston whiffs. 2 outs.

mick said...

speechless

David Proctor said...

Harper puts that ball into play. Hairston couldn't. Hairston hits lefties, not righties.

jeffwx said...

oh yeah runners in scoring position.
time to turn it up....i mean down.

Holden Baroque said...

Let's see if Ryan Zimmerman acquits himself well.

Hmm. Not so much. He waves at breaking balls off the plate and low. We go baja 10.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Just makes Ryan Zimmerman look bad there. How frustrating.

NatsLady said...

OK, Zim had to swing at the second pitch because he was going to call it a strike. But NO WAY did he have to swing at the 3rd pitch.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

What the hell was that Ryan... That low K gets on my nerves...

jeffwx said...

That is on point.

NatsLady said...

That's what closers mean when they say they play on hitters' aggressiveness. That was not a smart at-bat by Zim.

jeffwx said...

so they pull zimmm...hurt

NatsLady said...

What? Hechevarria has replaced Zim at 3B???? Stockton must be drunk.

Holden Baroque said...

Obviously, he can't tell that from the fastball. Either he can't see it, or he is totally guessing. Neither alternative fills me with confidence, speaking for myself. Neither does Tracy at third. Stammen pitching, I'm OK with for now.

jeffwx said...

omg....this is worse than the movie

MrsB loves the Nats said...

David Proctor said...

Wow Tracy. Zimmerman could've made a better throw than that. Unbelievable.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Oh no. Oh no. Tracy........what can you say.

NatsLady said...

Tracy????????????????? Terrible.

Holden Baroque said...

OK, not even Ryan puts them ten rows deep, there. Holy crap, Chad.

mick said...

are Nats going to be 1 under 500 and 8 back at break?? it looks like it

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

jeffwx said...

Neither is Tracy or Hairston.

mick said...

is Zim hurt...did we miss something why is he out?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Span can't get a bunt down. Soriano blows the save. Tracy throws a ball away. Hairston K's with men on 3rd and 2nd and 1 out. RZim K's with the game on the line.

Nats had 2 ducks on the pond in the 10th and couldn't do it.

That is a horrible team loss. Haren did his job and so did Storen and Clippard.

jeffwx said...

yes...this series will be the low point, DP
It can't get much worse

David Proctor said...

I'm still not giving up on the season, but this has to change. Charlie Slowes said it best: "The Nationals snatched defeat from the jaws of victory." Good teams just don't do that. I don't know what it is. I've seen worse teams go on runs at the end of the season, but the level of fundamental play just has to get better.. The defense, the hitting. The pitching is fine.

mick said...

Davey is tired and I think he wants out... I think there is a better than 50% chance Davey will resign

my prediction of 85 losses and an 8 game losing streak a while ago does not seem too far fetched now

NatsLady said...

I better hear that Rendon is dinged up. There is NO EXCUSE for him not being in this game!!!! And someone should have tackled Harper before he went and looked at video==> it was only going to rile him up if he was right.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Let's face it, we have a good team playing badly and without determination or leadership. Rizzo needs to access some accountability. No more happy talk.

As to the WashPost, I am a Nats fan, but the O's are a much more interesting team with more potential. I don't blame them for highlighting the O's.

Harper, in 2013, you are a mediocre left fielder with nothing more than aveage numbers. Get real about your professional career--as should the rest of us. Potential does not win games. Production does.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Wait... I thought the number was 4.7????

I'm so angry right now... Just unacceptable...

Joe Seamhead said...

We're not hitting, then last night our ace can't get through two innings, after hitting three guy his start before. Then Dan Haren gives us a pretty damn good start and we lose. Soriano gives it up in the bottom of the ninth. We can do nothing about it. The Braves play an all-who-are-these-guys outfield and beat the Reds. OK. Maybe we don't have this, and it's getting pretty hard to stay relaxed.

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said...

Can someone please explain to me why rizzo didnt keep the same team as last year who won 98 games? To me, stick to what makes you great. So far, the Span trade has not lived up to its hype as we got the "lead off" player we "desperately" been needing since we moved to DC.

Something is going on with this team. Whether Eck/Davey is changed their hitting approaches or the players feel the moral is down but something has to happen. Whether the nationals change is coaches, trading for a player to help the team and or trading some of our big contracts for minor leaguers.

Secret wasian man said...

Second Davey did ,2 moves I said werr stupid snd proved to be. Why did Hairston come in.I was sure Rendon would come in and lombo to left.

Soriano a fast ball high to be hit why?

Then why double switch Tracy? Stupid.

If you are going to soble switch stupidly twice you deserve to losr.

Hsren pitched great. Storen and Clippard. soriano. Ecept one pitch..

Also meant to fuss at Span. Bunt successfully if Desi got his single, we score.

Again no hitting.

When is Eck gone. Until we change dtrategies and hitting coach we will have trouble.

Fire him I still think we can win

Couldn',t possiblyhurt to fire him correct?

NatsLady said...

I understand the hitters didn't hit. I understand Rafi thew a meatball to Stanton. But that 10th inning--bottom and top--was a disaster! Tracy gets a hit. You have a guy on your bench who (a) can run and (b) CAN PLAY THIRD BASE!!!! What is WRONG with you, Davey??????

Why not have Redon in there? I don't understand it. But then it was Harper who screwed the pooch by getting tossed. It messed up the bench something awful. Shame on him for what was a selfish, immature reaction.

JamesFan, we are not a good team playing badly. We are a mediocre team. Nothing more, nothing less. It is really disappointing to see a team with so much potential have an utter lack of heart. In fact, its embarassing. But at the end of the day, you are what your record is, and thats a.500 team. The Nats have been given every break possible (the rest of the NL East has played awful since the middle of April). Yet the Nats have kicked every opportunity down the drain. NatsLady said...

Yes, Bryce got jobbed. But Clip got jobbed too, and he didn't get himself thrown out of the game.

My feeling (I know I'm repeating myself) is that Davey gets tired and loses focus toward the end of games. He has his plan, and sticks to it, but isn't flexible with changing situations, especially late in games. It's like he forgot Rendon's existence. Maybe he was upset about Harper, but you can't think about that now, have to deal with it later.

Stammen did OK, but I think Davey should have used Krol first, and saved Stammen in case it went multiple extra innings. You need to save the guy who can give the most innings for last.

I was appalled at Tracey's throw. There is no excuse for that.

Anonymous said...

Sorry but there are boundaries that must be observed even when the umpire gets it wrong. You don't voluntarily take yourself out of a close game because you are angry at the umpire. That is just rookie dumb and Harper hurt his team.

Coolhandbane (formally Bob Saget) said...

I think a big change is coming. We will either trade for someone to help this team hitting, trade away some big name players (Zimmy, Werth or LaRoach) or a coach quits or gets fired. I say this because except for Span leading off and Rendon in for Espi, this is the same players as last year. So something has happened to cause them to not hit, especially in clutch.

No more "I dont know what why we aren't hitting but we just aren't" type talk. Something has to change. I hope it is for the best.

What is also infuriating is that FP Santangelo turncoated. That is sad. It was clearly off the plate.

The pitch that Harp was thrown out on I didn't comment on that strike call as it looked closer and that was 1/2 on the black and was too close to take.

Harp should've kept his mouth shut but also like I said yesterday Davey reminds me of Acta. Stands on his perch and does nothing.

ExposedinDC: I agree. They need to change to either help them now or help them in the future. If there isnt change then this team will continue to not play well.
