Game 65: Nats at Rockies

USA Today Sports Images
It's been 29 days since Ross Detwiler last pitched, a strained right oblique muscle having shelved him for nearly a month. Today, the left-hander returns to the mound, healthy and hoping to pick up where he left off. In eight starts before the injury, Detwiler sported a 2.76 ERA, certainly pitching better than his 2-4 record would suggest.

The Nationals have missed their No. 5 starter and gladly welcome him back with open arms this afternoon as they seek to win their second straight against the Rockies and take this series. With Detwiler officially activated off the DL, reliever Erik Davis has been optioned to Class AAA Syracuse. That means Ross Ohlendorf is sticking around for now, though the Nats will need to make another roster move on Sunday when Stephen Strasburg returns.

After watching his club score five runs last night against Jorge De La Rosa and Co., Davey Johnson is going with a similar lineup against fellow lefty Jeff Francis. That means Jeff Kobernus makes his second straight start in left field, batting second. The only change: Kurt Suzuki returns behind the plate, batting eighth.

Though I'm not in Denver for this series, I will be watching alongside all of you this afternoon. And I'll have an Instant Analysis post as soon as the game ends, so be sure to check back for that...

Too bad for Little Clip, but he was just not ready. Interesting that they are keeping Ohlendorf. He can't pitch for a few days, but if they sent him down he would have to stay there for 10 days, or he could take his opt-out.

Welcome back Det.... Im glad to see Kobernus getting more plate appearances...

I would have rathered Mini Clip stay up and Cedeno go back down...

While last season's answer appeared to have been a chicken ("sacrifice a live . . ." or "a whole (KFC) chicken just like you ordered" or "soup" or "mode" or whatever), this season it appears to be gunpowder ("Have to wake up bats!").

Mule senses a bat-awakening in progress. Offerings of cigars and rum are also indicated.
Thanks be given to the baseball gods (or Jobu, or whomever); may the excitement continue to build !

Cards scored a run against Harvey with small-ball. Wonder if that will be enough for Wainwright.

Knoxville Nat said...

I'm wondering if Haren doesn't get an injured pinky finger on his right hand between now and Sunday. Not wishing it on him of course but just saying.......

Eric said...

From the Twitter feed:
Per Davey, Stephen Strasburg (lat) had a clean bullpen session today and was given the clear by trainers. Still on track to return Sunday.

Woohoo! Next up: info on Harper, hopefully tomorrow, and hopefully appreciably along the same lines!

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I forgot the game started at 3 today.... I guess I will be listening to Charlie and Dave on XM until I can get home and watch the game...

Anonymous said...

I had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year. Walks and HRs are way up. The Nats need to show patience, get on base, and play for the Earl Weaver special today. They could put up a big number.

DaveB said...

The Post schedule page shows Haren on Sunday and Stras on Monday ... does Davey want to save SS for the Phils or is Monday still correct/

Eric said...

>I had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year.

Oh great...these guys have had our freaking number this season.

JD said...

DaveB,

Everywhere I checked they have Stas on Sunday in Cleveland and Haren in Phily on Monday.

JD said...

Wainwright is a free agent after this year. Right?

Wow.

NatsLady said...

Wright broke up the no-hitter after a chancy (not nessarily wrong) call by the ump. They didn't show reply if he checked his swing and they didn't show pitch f/x to see if it was a strike.

Kiterp said...

Mrs B ... MLB on XM usually broadcasts the home team announcers. Does JFK have an XM station?

NatsLady said...

And now Wainwright walks a guy. Was he mentally in the dugout when he thought he had the 3rd strike on Wright? Luckily, a long flyout to center by Duda (had a nice sound, you could see Wainwright was worried).

phil dunton said...

Wainright signed a 5 year extension in March for $97.5 million.

JD said...

Never mind. Wainright signed a big long term contract in March. ($97.5 mil for 5 years).

JD said...

I owe you a drink phil.

Doc said...

Sorry to see Clip II go back down.

He'll be back. Cursed with not throwing with his left arm like Cedeno, I guess???

JD said...

Doc,

Cedeno is only buying 3 more days until Stras returns I think.

Holden Baroque said...

BTW, from the other threads, but Re: Davey coaching in the ASG--am I remembering wrong, or is it not established convention to have the managers of the other division winners on the staff, if they accept?

JD said...

Sec.3

I think it's fairly discretionary but it's generally considered good manners to have the home manager invited to the staff.

Holden Baroque said...

And he didn't do that?

Knoxville Nat said...

Balkin Bob Davidson and John Hirschbeck on the bases. Somehow I missed that the first two games....just hope nobody on the Nats gives Hirschbeck the opportunity to repeat his Pittsburgh performance when he tossed Harper out for no good reason.

Holden Baroque said...

Nevermind. Terry Collins instead of Dusty. Interesting.

Holden Baroque said...

Also, trainer Lee Kuntz goes with Davey.

NatsLady said...

Well, much as I enjoy a good pitchers' duel, gotta watch the first few minutes of my precious Nats before (sigh) work.

JD said...

NL,

These 2 pitchers are special though. Aren't they?

DaveBinMD said...

Nats Lady said:
"Too bad for Little Clip, but he was just not ready."

He had 5 appearances (4.1 innings) with 7 Ks and 1 BB, and in 4 of those 5 appearances he allowed no earned runs. He had ONE bad outing in a game that was already a lost cause thanks to Haren. He's looked more 'ready' than Drew Storen has...

JaneB said...

I figured it would be Baby Clip who got optioned. I agree Cedeno is next. I don't think Haren springs an injury between now and the. He's too straight forward a guy.
GYFNG!
I'd rather have Stras on Sunday FWIW.
GYFNG,

Wow...Det's ERA is 2.76 and Francis' is 6.30.

Both have a record of 2 - 4.

Eric said...

Mr. Cy Francis presiding over the top of the first...

David Proctor said...

Not the best way to start the game, Det.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Uhm... not good at bats at all fellas...

NatsLady said...

DaveBinMD--yeah, if you just looked at the stats. But looking at the games he was shaky and got rescued by some excellent fielding and the guy after him who didn't let inherited runners score. He was able to strike guys out, but didn't have much "craft". That will come, I hope.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Cy Fracis needs to go

Babe Fowler came through on first pitch.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

When Hirshbeck tossed Harper. Balking Bob was doing the plate.

NatsLady said...

Camera angle must be strange, how was that inside?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

So is CarGo out the game?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Freaky accident to CarGo

NatsLady said...

MrsB--yes. They subbed in Tyler Colvin.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

And that's called a productive out. Take notice some of you Nats.

Shakey start by Detwiler.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I hate to see anyone injured... That is tough...

Thanks NL!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

I thought CarGo hurt himself trying to get out of the way.

David Proctor said...

Ross looks rusty.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Did Detwiler warm up, they are not missing any pitches. Needed a K on Colvin andhe pitched right over the middle.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Det started the season lights out... then all of a sudden went into a lull...

David Proctor said...

Could've been worse. Hopefully Det settles in now.

Eric said...

OK, flip the script, Nats.

NatsLady said...

Good Det, minimized the damage, hasn't forgotten how to pitch. This game is not ending 1-0.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

We are going to win this game

Det started the season lights out... then all of a sudden went into a lull...

Like you said he started off the season well. The Atlanta game was all about the fact that they had him scouted well and were prepared for him and Det sometimes has to mix it up. Also, there's a good chance Det was injured long before the game he was pulled from.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

This is the thing about XM... So the inning just ended... But I am on MLB.com and pitch track just showed J Werth grounding out....

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

We have not had a homer this series. About time we get one.

Eric said...

Yeah, I seem to recall Carp and FP talking about him grimacing getting over to first during the previous start.

It's very strange and frustrating.

It's why I suggested you rest Werth and LaRoche and get in the youngsters who have as good a chance on hitting his junk and the vets get a rest.

blovy8 said...

Francis is getting breaking balls over for a first strike, that's kind of different.

Niiiice...just a little bloop or seeing eye ball will do, z00k. Just even 'er up and go from there.

David Proctor said...

Zuke is in a bad place at the plate. It would be so nice to get Ramos back, but now it's at least another month away. Sigh.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

THAT is why i hate first pitch swinging....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Oops 2 outs. Forfot Werth batted this inning.

NatsLady said...

You wanted a first pitch swing, you got one. From Suzuki, who never does that.

blovy8 said...

better than watching detwiler hit tho

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

2 batters in a row get hits and Suzuki swings at the 1st pitch he sees which was a pitchers pitch. Come on man!

NatsLady said...

In his defense, Zook probably thought he wouldn't get another pitch to hit with Det batting behind him.

NatsLady said...

All right, folks, venturing out into the weather. Take care of this one, go NATS!!!!

He is headed towards Mendoza and it's frustrating to watch. He started off the season looking clutch and now not so much.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

DJ needs to give Zook more days off... Im not sure he has had a hit since he got hit by that pitch...

June 13, 2013 3:41 PM

Which is why the 8 hitter has to be a patient hitter and you take what the game gives you. Detwiler then has to do his job. That's not Suzuki's job to swing at that pitch.

Now Detwiler begins the next inning. Sigh.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Having watched baseball this debate has been forever. To swing or not to swing.

Iften times tge most hittable pitch is the first pitch. Teams that have a low average have it because they not hitting hittable pitches.

Nolan Areanto just got a hit on the first pitch.

blovy8 said...

there's a pivot for practice

David Proctor said...

I think that's Rendon's first turn 2B. He's had a few good feeds, but no turns. Good job!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Nice turn by Rendon as Ian's flip was from in front of the bag, not behind.

Not easy.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

See, this is why Zook needed to be patient, try to get a hit... Now Det leads off this inning...

DJ is going to have use JS more... Keep both guys motivated and healthy...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

blovy8 said...

Well, the reverse jinx is in force for Det. Nice.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

wait - Det got a hit!?!?!?! LOL... Good at bat sir... Saw like 8 pitches...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Suzuki hit hit fast ball that was doewn the middle. Most hittable pitch there is.

Why would him not to hit the most hittable pitch there is?

Problem not the swing. It was the contact. He didnt square it, he hit the top of the ball.

A DC Wonk said...

Det's first hit of the year!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

See Detwiler got a hit. That's my point with Suzuki, do your job.

Eric said...

">I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

I'm about 99% sure it's not true. I bet if you could do splits, we hit the guys with high ERAs much more than the guys with low ERAs. We hit Scott Diamond well four games ago. Most of our other 6+ run outbursts also came against relatively bad starters.

Fans just remember it more when we can't hit mediocre guys because its that much more frustrating. You see a guy like Francis on the mound and you expect every Nat to get on base.

Also, this has been a horrible offense so far this season, so they really don't hit anyone all that well.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Our hitters need to read Wee Willie Keelers's book.

A DC Wonk said...

MNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.

Look, we all know he's not a .300 hitter. And even .300 hitters don't always get a hit on fastballs down the middle. It happens.

Really nasty here now, heavy rain and wind.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Should be an out

Steady Eddie said...

MNF -- per GameDay (which seems to have been a lot more accurate this season than previously), the pitch to Zook was partway at the very bottom of the zone, very slightly lower than pitches with the bottom of the zone that Hoye (HP ump) has erroneously called balls today.

Zim's dinger was much higher in the zone, at least 1/3 to 40% of the way up.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

What is the injury?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Ball bunted

blovy8 said...

BS, that's a strike not an HBP

blovy8 said...

Ryan found a way to avoid pulling a hamstring. I know everyone seems to want to do that, but he's avoid the trend for a change.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

In case there is any doubt. I HATE john Hirshbeck as an ump.

A DC Wonk said...

Gosh -- I can't remember a discussion (re: RZ last night) that went on for so long which can be summarized by: "he misjudged, but he scored anyway"

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Hit the corners.

blovy8 said...

Yeah, Hirshbeck's a well-established bum

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Bizarre call on Fowler. Front foot out of the box and body across the plate. The bat was being pulled back. I realize it's a judgment call but Nats need some calls to go their way.

A foul ball that ricocheted off of him. He hurt his ankle. No video to show it. I thought possibly injured trying to dodge the ball as it was a low ankle injury.

blovy8 said...

wonk, it's still possible for the tag to be late or not made in that case. A guy can't have a foot out of the box and be a batter.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Rendon with another nice fielding play!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I called out immediately, as he hit the ball . He was bringing back the ball it hit his hands on the bat. He was out of the batter's box so it seem clear he was out.

Had he been swinging not bunting it would never not be called a check swing.
