Instant Analysis: Nats 5, Mets 4

US Presswire photo
Ross Detwiler tossed seven scoreless innings.
Game in a nutshell: The Nationals won in walk-off style on a wild pitch by Pedro Beato. Bryce Harper tripled in the game-tying run in the 10th, and Tyler Moore was up with the bases loaded when the winning run came home. Ross Detwiler had perhaps his best outing of the season as he shut out the Mets through seven innings of work, but late mistakes by the Nats' bullpen squandered the win for him. Tyler Clippard was handed a scoreless game and a two-run lead in the ninth, but allowed a three-run homer to a pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. The Nats were able to come back to tie it in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single by Danny Espinosa, but gave the lead back in the 10th. Michael Gonzalez allowed a two-out double to Josh Thole for the Mets' fourth run. All in a wild game at Nationals Park.

Hitting highlight: Harper's triple off the wall in right field in the 10th was pivotal as the Nats tied the game for the second time when facing the loss.

Pitching lowlight: Detwiler threw an absolute gem with five hits allowed and zero walks, but Clippard spoiled his night with the blown save. Clippard allowed two singles and then the home run on a 83 mph changeup.

Key stat: Detwiler now holds a 3.15 ERA on the season through 84.2 innings pitched. That is about as good as it gets from a number five starter.

Up next: The Nats and Mets series continues on Wednesday at Nats Park. Jordan Zimmermann (6-6, 2.48 ERA) will go up against Chris Young (2-3, 4.28 ERA).

Had it all the way. (ha!)

Give it up for Ross Detwiler. Great outing.

What a game!! Love these Nats!!

You said it, Drew. Awesome outing by Det. Wonderful thing to see (esp. with EJ struggling)

Love. This. Team.

Can I get a "HELL YA?!!!"

Fantastic win! Could have been over a bit sooner if only Harper would have carried Wright on his back. What a lollygagger. (Kidding. Heck, everybody knows that if he'd done that, the Mets would have scored another run as well. ;-))

WAS 5, NYM 4. #Nationals playoff chances now 82.4%.

Not a certainty, but sure nice to see.

Love me some rookie ball players!!!

Marlins are beating the Cubs 9-2 in the 8th.

Det is growing on me. Had lots of questions about him earlier, but he toughed out this one. In the heat. Clip needs to get his ACT together or Mattheus is going to take his job.

NatsLady said...

Glad Desi didn't have to swing the bat. Enjoyed, really enjoyed Davey bringing Mattheus in to pitch to Wright. No intentional walks for Davey!!!! Of course Det deserved the win, but SO DID MATTHEUS (who actually got it).

Ummmmm... not in this universe.

And a shout out to Espinoza who was down it his last strike. After the pitcher had thrown 8-9 straight curves (including three to Moore) he threw a low fastball and Espinoza comes through with the single

Wow, what a win! And quite a challenge for Chase to get an Instant Analysis up so quickly. Kudos!

And tomorrow: JZ against Cgris Young

Basically, the baseball gods decided to tell us that Clip should be a setup man, not a closer, so tonight they made him one. :-)

OK, for all the folks who want to save Strasburg some innings, we go to a six man rotation, but, the five starters pitch on almost their normal schedule, except that Ross pitches every eleven days!!! Total genius! ;-)

Great win, so some people can stop hand-wringing for a day. The Barves get smoked - they brought Jurjens back? Really? We are concerned about that rotation?

Even the Fish can't gain ground if they do manage to win tonight.

Smile people, smile. It really works.

Sec3, I know. Am just mad at Clip right now! However, his screwup led to a great game...

1. Wonder if Tyler Moore has seen his last fastball for the rest of this series and beyond.

2. How soon before we talk about a catching controversy between Flores & Flores.

3. Based on the current trend, if the Nats go into the post-season with a 3-man starting rotation (as most teams do), who should follow Zimmermann and Gonzales - Detwiler or Jackson?

ehay2k said...

Rogieshan, my money is on Flores in that battle! :-)

Major Jammage said...

Kudos to Lombardozzi and Espinosa with key RBIs in the game. Our middle infield did well today. Espi is starting to swing the hot bat.

I was surprised that they walked Desmond in the 10th--he hadn't hit for a few weeks or so, and honestly who knows if he was ready.

Jeezy-peezy, I can't sleep. Too excited after that one. So many of you on the game thread kill me with already throwing in the towel, not just for tonight's game, but for the season. We still are in first place with the best record in the NL.
BTW, Bryce tends to be a streak hitter, and seems to be awakening from a mini-slump.Katie, bar the door!

Doc said...

Espi's back!

Now all he needs to do is pick out a few pitches to put into the bleachers!!!

rogieshan said...

ehay2k, oops...haha! Well, Flores can be his own worst enemy!

Just got home....I was dreading of what the replay would show......Zimm is hurt in the celebration?

Sure looked like pain not pleasure on this face.

Major Jammage said...

And how about that throw from Bryce to keep the runner on 3rd on that shallow fly ball? A total strike to the catcher. It was a thing of beauty.

baseballswami said...

All four rookies with key hits. Detweiler pitched beautifully,an appearance by Desi, a walk off win after a blown save. This was quite a game!

JayB--it was the ice.

god i hope so......

Now, lay off Flo. The guy has been putting in Yeoman duty behind the plate. Day in and day out. No complaining. Calls a solid game and is an upgrade defensively from Ramos. So he's not the greatest hitter with the game on the line in the bottom of the ninth. I can live with that, given what else he brings to the table. And the fact we can't play Solano more than once a week.

I go with the Flo.

I know that some people thought lombo did not look comfortable at second the last few days, but he sure looked good in this game. He made one play that showed really good range towards first. Nice dp with espi, too.

Just goy home. Great game.
Horrible anthem. Another hack trying to show he's more important than the song, then cant reach the unnecessary high notes. Doesnt the nats staff listen to these people first?

sm13 said...

Great game to be at. That's my second walk off wild pitch of the year! Lost in the shuffle is Det's best outing of the year.

Great game tonight and the crowd was into it despite the oppressive heat! Just got home and i am too wired to sleep!

WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

Meanwhile, in Hagerstown, Brian Goodwin swats his ninth homer. His occasional power and splendid on base percentage combine for a .979 OPS, on the heels of Matt Skole's .987.

I wish we could see Skole against tougher competition in Potomac. The way Keyes and Kelso have wilted, it seems the move to high-A is a good sifter.

Just got home from another great experience!!
So many things to love
1. Detwiler was just as strong in the 7th as in the beginning - great command, no walks, what a #5 starter!!
2. Burnett also solid - really don't see him going on the dl
3. We had in the last innings 3 ROOKIES playing the outfield! How great is that?
4. So many clutch hits tonight. Lombardozzi drives in a huge run so we go up by 2 - Espinosa is clutch and then Harper!! we sit in 308 and knew right away he was going to go for 3 - just a great play.

ok - new hat has us on a win streak

Go Nats!!!

I couldn't go to sleep after getting home last night. Truly one of the best games I have ever been to. Loved hearing Dave "summon" the WP at the end of the game, when we heard the re-cap on the radio. We all gave ourselves whiplash in the car when we heard it, because we knew what actually happened. GO NATS!

Amazing game ... loved what Davey said about the young prospects coming through and complimenting the organization for drafting and developing them. And he said ... there's more coming ...

All those who want to go outside for old codgers and castoffs take heed!

Or the return of Sandy Leon.
