VIDEO: Zuckerman on Desmond, Lannan

Mark joined Julie Donaldson on SportsNet Central last night to discuss the Nationals heading into the trade deadline. Towards the end of the segment he talked specifically about the absence of Ian Desmond and whether John Lannan may be the replacement for Stephen Strasburg in September.

Cards get Mujica and Saltamacchia may be on the move from Boston? Wow what a huge flurry of trades at this year's deadline!

Wow, Zach Cox -> Marlins + Redsox get LHP Craig Breslow!

It isn't going to stop until the last second.

Remember when this offseason people were saying their would less trades at the deadline, because to many teams would think they were still in and would trade. Wrong - more trades...

I can't remember this big a flurry ... its non-stop!

A lot has to do with the Dodgers old-school approach and having a 2 billion plus franchise. Followed suit by the Giants.

Sanchez to Pirates now!

A lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing? Assuming the Nats stay quiet for the next half-hour, it will be VERY interesting to see whether this flurry of activity changes the balance of power very much in the long run.

In the long run? It already has. The Astros especially but the Marlins and Phillies have improved themselves for the future dramatically. New powers that could soon rise in the National League.

To clarify, by "long run", I was thinking more along the lines of this October and the contending teams.
