Werth takes BP, Storen ready to return

The Nationals' two biggest roster additions this summer might not come via a blockbuster move at the July 31 trade deadline but rather the pending return of two key players from the disabled list: Jayson Werth and Drew Storen.

Each recovering player is moving closer to a return from the DL. Storen could be activated in time to make his season debut tomorrow afternoon; at the same time Werth could be beginning a minor-league rehab assignment.

Storen sounds ready to face big-league hitters after a dominant, one-inning performance Tuesday night with Class A Potomac. That was his sixth rehab appearance and his most effective (he struck out two of the three Lynchburg batters he faced).

"I feel confident out there and I feel comfortable," he said. "I think that's the main thing. That's what you try to get in spring training. I treated these rehab appearances like they were spring training, and I'm really happy with where I'm at."

First place team adds a pair of plus players at the trade deadline at no cost to the farm system. I love it.

I know the Werth haters are going to hate, but I love the guy in a deep lineup. He was never going to be *the* guy. But put him in the middle of a real team and he shines - at the plate, in the field, and in the dugout especially. A young and talented team like this needs his presence. After the Morgan row last year, everybody knows a malcontent is just a run-in with Jayson away from a bus-ride out of town. Nice to have a guy around that can keep everyone else in check, especially now that we are a serious team.

This is going to be a fun team to watch for the next several years boys and girls. We're in the conversation to stay.

Can't wait for them both to get back, especially Storen. Clip needs help.

Jimmy -- there are no malcontents on this team. It's more or less the team that Rizzo wanted, with "character" guys throughout. Even someone like Ankiel who's had his chances to contribute and is basically an afterthought is -- as long as he's here -- still valued for the guidance he can provide the younger players. Everyone contributes what they can.

And a team that's built that way and is winning is going to stick together like glue. Much to the annoyance of a few on this board -- fewer than there were -- everyone gets a fair chance to show their stuff, so no one who's benched has a basis to nurse any grievances. Davey knows what he's doing in handling these guys.

Steady E - I think you're right. This is a high character group. I'm not particularly worried about them unraveling, so much as I like knowing we have guys around that are willing to push people in the right direction when needed. Werth is a leader in the clubhouse.
