Strasburg placed on DL

Updated at 5:25 p.m.

Still experiencing tightness in his strained right lat muscle, Stephen Strasburg will be placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Nationals.

Strasburg hasn't experienced any setbacks since he was pulled after two innings Friday night in Atlanta, but the condition hasn't improved enough for club officials to let him take the mound again. The right-hander was scheduled to throw off a bullpen mound this afternoon, but he never attempted the session.

"We were going to be cautious with him, but all along, we felt that this type of injury is usually a DL-type of injury," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "But because he felt good, we wanted to see where he was at."

The move is retroactive to June 1, making Strasburg eligible to return from the DL as soon as June 16.

Was the earlier report that Ohlendorf opted out of his agreement with the Nats wrong?

@Ken_Rosenthal: Ohlendorf to replace Strasburg on #Nationals’ roster. Nats need starter for Saturday.

I'm sure I've seen this noted here before but Ohlendorf was named the 3rd smartest professional athlete in a 2010 SI story:

3. Ross Ohlendorf, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates
• Age: 28
• On-field accomplishments: Was the only Pirates starter with a winning record (11-10 with a 3.92 ERA) in 2009, his first full major league season. On September 5, 2009, became the 40th pitcher to strike out three batters on nine pitches.
• Alma mater, major, GPA: Princeton, operations research and financial engineering, 3.8
• SAT score: 1520
• Off-field/intellectual interests: He worked as a volunteer intern in the U.S. Department of Agriculture last offseason. In addition to having worked on a cost-benefit analysis of a program that traces disease in livestock and its effect on farmers, he helps his father manage the family’s herd of longhorns near, of course, Austin, Texas. “Ranching,” he says, “is pretty much all I do in the offseason.”
• What I’m reading now: “The Nine Tailors, by Dorothy L. Sayers.”
• If I weren’t a professional athlete, I’d ... “(Do) something in business or finance.”
• Nerdiest thing about me: “I read on the day I pitch.”
• Smartest teammate I’ve had: “Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen.”

Just great. Looking at Ohlendorf's career numbers, he is the right handed version of Duke. In fact, their career trajectories are eerily similar as both had their only decent seasons as starters in 2009 as 26-year olds with the Pirates and since then have been absolutely awful at the MLB level.

This plus a new bullpen loaded with raw rookies and an Astros castoff means the Nats should consider themselves lucky if they manage a winning record on this homestand.

We are trying to catch the Uankees in days missed on the DL. This is getting real old real fast.

Last two starts were solid. Have my fingers crossed.

Ohlendorf did well in his recent starts. I'm hopeful he can give us a quality 6 innings or so. I'd prefer this to throwing another rookie into the mix.

MNF, the difference is the Yankees have a much older average age.

Interesting article about attendance. O's #1 and Nats #2 increase.

Well, look at the path of Tropical Storm Andrea. Glad it's not a hurricane.

222, read that list. It's depressing. Apparently there are no smart female athletes.

What's the over/under on time to the first national media story excoriating the Nats for shutting down SS by putting him on the DL? ;-)
