Game 72: Rockies at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Hello from South Capitol Street, which hasn't hosted a ballgame in 11 days. The Nationals at last return to familiar territory after an eventful, not-entirely-successful, 4-5 road trip to Colorado, Cleveland and Philadelphia, hoping last night's dramatic, 11-inning win was the start of a long-awaited hot streak.

Having Jordan Zimmermann on the mound tonight against the Rockies certainly helps the cause. The right-hander is looking to become only the third pitcher in the majors to reach the 10-win mark this season, joining Adam Wainwright and Max Scherzer, but he'll have to put forth a better outing than he did last time in Cleveland when he blew an early 5-0 lead.

Roy Oswalt makes his 2013 debut, having signed a minor-league deal with the Rockies and built his arm back up to shape. There's really no way to know how the 35-year-old will look tonight, given the fact he hasn't appeared in a major-league game since last fall with the Rangers (when he wasn't very good).

I'll be starting the game thread tonight, but then I have to head over to Bethesda for tonight's episode of The Baseball Show, so Chase will take over in-stream. Check back for plenty of updates...

7:06 p.m. — We are underway as Jordan Zimmermann fires strike one to Tyler Colvin. Beautiful, 75-degree night for baseball as the crowd files in.

7:15 p.m. — Wow, what a first inning for Zimmermann. Yes, he gave up two singles, but get this: He threw 15 pitches in total, all 15 of them strikes. Not sure I've ever seen anybody do that. Obviously his command is on tonight.

7:25 p.m. — Impressive stuff from Roy Oswalt in his first MLB inning of the season. His fastball sat at 92-94 mph and he struck out both Denard Span (albeit on a pitch well outside) and Adam LaRoche. Anthony Rendon with yet another base hit. The kid continues to shine on the big stage. Scoreless after one.

7:27 p.m. — By the way, if you missed it, here's my 1-on-1 TV interview with Bryce Harper from earlier this afternoon on CSN. Bryce talked about how his rehab is going, what he worried about when he visited Dr. James Andrews and how he'll determine when he returns from the DL.

7:32 p.m. — Two innings down and Zimmermann has hit a rough spot. He's only thrown 25 of 28 pitches for strikes. Terrible command from Jordan. I mean, really, THREE balls? Come on!

7:38 p.m. — Ian Desmond with a home run. I think we've seen that before. Not too long ago, either. This one obviously didn't mean as much as last night's, but it gives the Nats a 1-0 lead nonetheless. That's Desmond's 11th homer of the season, only one behind Bryce Harper for the team lead now.

7:45 p.m. — Three innings down, here's Zimmermann's updated pitch count: 38 pitches, 33 strikes. Unreal.

7:55 p.m. — Good stuff from Oswalt, who has looked sharp through his first three innings (aside from the Desmond homer). We really had no idea what to expect from the veteran in this outing, but I have to say he looks like he's still got it. 1-0 Nats after three, and I'm heading up to Bethesda for tonight's Baseball Show on CSN. Chase, here are the keys to the car. Remember to stay under the speed limit!

8:21 p.m. -- The Nats got another run across in the bottom of the fourth with some timely, two-out hitting. LaRoche led off the frame with a single before Werth and Desmond struck out. Lombardozzi was then able to foul off several pitches before joining LaRoche on base with a single. Suzuki batted LaRoche in with a single that barely left the infield. He hit a grounder to the left side that found room between Herrera and Arenado who both dived, but missed. Oswalt has allowed two runs through four with 78 total pitches (54 strikes).

8:29 p.m. -- Another efficient inning of work for Jordan Zimmermann who needed just 14 pitches to get through another frame. He is at 63 through five innings with no signs of slowing down.

8:44 p.m. -- The Nats padded their lead in the fifth with two more runs across. Span started the inning with a double to right-center and Rendon followed with a single. Both runners were knocked home by a LaRoche triple that bounced through the gap in right field. LaRoche is now tied for second on the Nats this season with two triples. Zimmermann will now take over to start the sixth.

8:51 p.m. -- Another quick inning for Zimmermann who is absolutely carving up the Rockies tonight. He has retired 14 straight batters and has thrown only 72 pitches (56 strikes) overall.

9:05 p.m. -- It's now 5-0 Nats after Zimmermann helped his cause with an RBI. Lombardozzi led the inning off with a double and reached third on a wild pitch by Rockies' reliever Adam Ottavino. Zimmermann then hit a long fly ball to center to bring home Lombo and open the game up even more.

9:16 p.m. -- Zimmermann finally made it kind of interesting by allowing two hits, both with two outs, in the top of the seventh. But he then got out of the frame by getting Torrealba to ground out to Zim at third. Jordan has thrown 89 pitches (69) through seven. We'll see if he can go the distance.

9:26 p.m. -- The Nats couldn't get much going in the bottom of the seventh. LaRoche reached with a one-out single, but went nowhere after a Werth strikeout and a Desmond pop up. Werth has a golden sombrero with four strikeouts tonight, by the way.

9:40 p.m. -- Zimmermann finally found himself in some trouble in the eighth inning after walking Josh Rutledge with one out. The next batter, Tyler Colvin, then grounded to Rendon who made a throwing error looking for the forceout at second. Rutledge went to third and was then brought home by a LeMahieu single to center field. No earned runs for Zimmermann, but the 23 pitches he threw probably means that's it for him tonight.

9:49 p.m. -- Nothing going for the Nats in the bottom of the eighth, but Chris Marrero pinch-hit for Zimmermann so it will be Rafael Soriano for the ninth. Still 5-1 Nats.

9:57 p.m. -- 1-2-3 for Soriano as the Nats move to 36-36 on the year. 5-1 your final score.

The season has DEFINITELY turned the corner. I feel it every time I read "#EatFace."

You know, there were a few people posting here who were convinced we would lose all nine. We usually say .500 on the road- one game off. And I reall do feel that the bottom has passed with Det and Stras back and the better bullpen, Rendon in the mix. Onward and upward from here!!

Det and Stras back will make a big difference. No more wondering whether the spot starter can succeed, as Ross O did, or fail, as Karns and Duke did. But one game doesn't an offensive turnaround make. I fear that until Harper returns we have no chance for consistent offense. I'm sure looking forward to not seeing Harper tweets about other sports during our games.

All can say is keep a close eye on your autocorrect if you want to talk about eating faces. Don't ask me how I know that.

Let's get an early lead boys, and Jordan will hold it for us. Tenth win for Jordan tonight! GYFNG! #ESF

I just want to try out my new AVATAR...is that what you call the little pictures?

baseballswami said...

I hear you, as in I don' t think the offense will suddenly become consistent. But I think we might see more flashes of it, more of those games where we have a lot of hits. Knocking on that door. Eventually they might pick up a little more steam.

Dang, its hard to read. It says NI SONNY G above the number 10.

According to the Glossary, Gorse Hacking resulted from an auto correct failure on UnkyD's phone. So technically, the new Hacking the Gorse would be.... Oh never mind.

Section 222 said...

It's legible Sonny, and very cool. And No. 10 is the number used for the best player in some sports, right?

Theophilus T. S. said...

Actually, the lineup TBA is strangely reassuring. At least you don't have to read the list of guys whose BAs are lower than the pitcher's.

Hacking is often used to signify an automatic or mechanical watch's ability to synchronize time by stopping the seconds hand when setting the time. This has important applications in a variety of fields, especially in the military and law enforcement.

David Proctor said...

Come on Theo, can't we at least enjoy today following a big win? :)

Roy Oswalt is an interesting matchup. Great pitcher but really struggled for Texas last year. I wonder if he has anything left. Guess we'll find out.

natsfan1a said...

I suppose that we should add "eat somebody's face/ESF" to the Glossary.

Thanks, deuces. I guess you're right about 10 being a number for good players. In my case it was kinda an accident. I tried to sign on as sonnyg1 because that's my logon for some other sites, but it was already taken on Blogger, so I went for sonnyg10. I kinda like that better now and it definitely looks better on my nats shirt.

Is it me or does Gio seem more reserved this year?

David Proctor said...

I don't think Gio is more reserved, I think they just don't focus on him so much since we already know how outgoing he was. Last year, it was his first year and it was new to us. His interview on FOX was great.

Holden Baroque said...

Is it me or does Gio seem more reserved this year?

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if all the no-decisions are starting to get on his nerves a little.

A DC Wonk said...

Leading indicator that the Nats might be starting to turn things around?

The Nats have only four victories when trailing after seven innings.

All four have home in the last two weeks.

David Proctor said...

Yep and we nearly did it a 5th time in the first game of the Phillies series.

Throw a couple balls, Jordan. They're allowed.

A DC Wonk said...

Wow. JZ after one inning:

15 pitches. 15 strikes.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Whew... A few fat pitches by Jordan...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Balls that appear like strikes are allowed, not just balls.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Come on Joe... That was a clear ball....

David Proctor said...

That was not even close to a strike. Span was putting together a good AB.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Good going Anthony...

David Proctor said...

Wtf this strike zone? JZimm better take advantage of it too.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

What the hell is Joe West looking at????

See, that's why folks call for blues to be replaced by technology...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

David no guarentee zimm gets that call. It way out to lefties.

Next one JZim gets an 0-2 on a lefty throw in same spot and see if Joe West is consisyant.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

If Joe West is gonna give him that ball for a strike, Jordan better get the same thing...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Love the Nats double play... Good throw by Ryan...

A DC Wonk said...

JZ's getting wild? ;-)

After two: 28 pitches 25 strikes. Yowza!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

FYI

Rockies 156 more hits than Nats

Rockies 34 more walks

Nationals 24 more strike outs

Results Rockies 107 more runs. About 40% more runs

Unknown said...

off topic but wondering if anyone has an idea: what is the average # of baseballs used in a MLB game? between foul balls, HR's, guys throwing balls into the stands, am sure it fluctuates big time but have always been curious...have to think there is a stat for it somewhere.

MrsB, he's in his walk year so maybe a prospect or two, he would be a rental for a contender, more likely for an AL team given the DH but just my opinion.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I'm never ever nervous when Jordan is pitching....

David Proctor said...

That last ball by Zim looked like a routine fly and it nearly left the park.

I see the jet stream to right field is starting to pick up as the weather gets warmer.

Unknown said...

and more likely than not, a decent draft pick too, maybe?

A DC Wonk said...

JZ after three: 38 pitches, 33 strikes.

David Proctor said...

I know most people are gushing over the 38:33 ratio, but I kind of wish JZimm would throw more balls. Not like Gio or anything, but get guys out of the zone.

A DC Wonk said...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I'm never ever nervous when Jordan is pitching....

Regarding ALR's triple:

Bill James once wrote about watching Willie Mays Aikens hit a triple when Aikens was with the Royals. Royals were winning the game in a blowout, and late in the game, Aikens hit a ball that got past the outfielders and kicked around all over the place.

Aikens was never a gazelle, and James and his wife realized this might be the first 3-bagger of his career. They cheered wildly while Willie chugged around the bases, and went crazy when he slid safely into third, much to the puzzlement of the other fans around them, who were wondering why they were getting so excited when the Royals had a ten-run lead.

Willie retired with two triples his entire career.

see the Prez race? awesome...greatest marketing ploy for a DC sports team in a long time...however, who remembers "Tiny" the Bullets little dachshund who would run out at old Cap Centre to fetch the ball during time-outs with a wagon in tow? classic!! although I still have an affinity for the SD chicken who really jump started the "mascot" thing...sorry I'm off topic again.

Danny Espinosa strikes out for the third time tonite and the seventh time in a row.

Wow. That really is sad. I can't even imagine how frustrated he must be feeling now.

Maybe.

I suspect the hitting coach in Syracuse doesn't give a rat's behind. He wants Danny to purge the bad habits he's accumulated over the past two years, and learn how to hit all over again.

I hear learning how to hit is... difficult.

JZim with 72 pitches through 6. I'm thinking Davey would like to see him go CG.
