All the Steve Lombardozzi fans out there need not worry: Lombo is scheduled to start in left field tonight, so he's not being cast aside to the bench 24 hours after driving in the game-winning run last night.

5:08 p.m. — Breaking (though not surprising) news: Stephen Strasburg is being placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right lat muscle. Full story here.
7:07 p.m. — And we're underway on a gorgeous night at Nationals Park. Dan Haren fires strike one to Omar Quintanilla. There is, unfortunately, black smoke rising from several blocks behind the center-field fence. Rumor is it's a hardware store on fire.
7:13 p.m. — It only figures Anthony Rendon gets two chances in his very first inning at second base. Neither grounder was particularly tough, but he fielded each flawlessly. So, a 1-2-3 inning for Haren, a nice start to this game.
7:28 p.m. — And the Nats strike first, thanks to Ian Desmond's two-out RBI single to left. It all began with Denard Span's leadoff double over the head of a mystified Marlon Byrd. Span wound up on third base with two outs, then Desmond drove him home with a nice, controlled base hit to left. So the Nats take a 1-0 lead after one. Momentum, baby!
7:43 p.m. — Though he's been much better over the last month or so, Haren still has been victimized by the long ball, and he just was again in the top of the second. Byrd crushed a 1-1 cutter into the Red Porch, which is the 13th home run allowed by Haren in only 64 2/3 innings this season. That's not a good rate. The Nats now trail 2-1.
7:53 p.m. — The Nats tried to mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the second, on a double by Haren (?!) and a single by Span. But Werth was rung up on a check swing, so that quashed any hope of a run there. Still 2-1 Mets after two.
8:04 p.m. — You know what the Nationals really didn't need to have happen tonight? Haren really struggle. So much for wishful thinking. He's been rocked for three homers in three innings, which makes it 15 for the season surrendered by the right-hander. Marlon Byrd has gotten him twice. Yes, Marlon Byrd. It's 5-1 Mets, and there's no action in the Nats bullpen. Given the injury woes and need to save some relievers for upcoming games, Haren may have to stay out there and wear it for a while tonight.
8:15 p.m. — Adam LaRoche just bunted for a base hit. Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.
8:30 p.m. — And that'll do it for Haren. He's done after four innings, having allowed five runs on seven hits (three of them homers). It'll be Craig Stammen in to replace him in the fifth, the Nats trailing 5-1.
8:50 p.m. — And Stammen only makes things worse. He walked the very first batter he faced on four pitches, walked another batter, gave up a pair of singles, let two runs score and threw a total of 32 pitches to record three outs. It's 7-1 Mets in the middle of the fifth as Momentum laughs at everyone in the ballpark tonight.
9:02 p.m. — Here's Ian Krol to make his MLB debut in the sixth inning of a 7-1 game. The 22-year-old left-hander was one of the players acquired from the A's in the three-team Michael Morse trade over the winter.
9:11 p.m. — Well, Krol gave up a leadoff double but then he delivered big-time, striking out Murphy, Wright and Duda in succession. Nice job by the kid in his MLB debut. Still 7-1 Mets heading to the bottom of the sixth.
9:19 p.m. — The Nats have put six men in scoring position so far in six innings tonight. And only one of them has scored. They just can't get anything going.
9:38 p.m. — Oof, it's 10-1 Mets at the stretch as Erik Davis gets lit up by the bottom of the lineup in the seventh. Seriously, Anthony Recker, Juan Lagares and the No. 9 hitters are a combined 6-for-11 with four RBI tonight.
9:53 p.m. — Hey, a scoreless inning from Fernando Abad.
10:04 p.m. — Three outs from a sub-.500 record and third place in the NL East.
10:19 p.m. — It's over. Final: 10-1. The Nats are in third place for the first time since the final day of the 2011 season.

Werth was better in the lead-off spot than Span. Span's OBP is disappointing, as is his base running/stealing.
I must have miss it - sorry. I've been to over 25 staduims over the years and never have been treated like that. Maybe a little good natured back and forth. Just scary.
Here is the Biogenesys deal as I see it:
Tony Bosch figured he is probably in the clear until baseball sued Biogenesys. This wasn't going to put him in jail because it's not a criminal charge but it was going to put a large hole in his pocket book based on large lawyer bills.
Tony decided to play ball with MLB in order to rid himself of the legal costs and Baseball is dying to prove that it has turned the page and wants to rid the game of drugs (they are particularly interested in nailing a big fish like ARod and/or Braun).
The union and their lawyers will go hard after Bosch's credibility and they will appeal all the suspensions so unless Baseball has corroborating evidence this is not over by a long shot.
As far as Gio is concerned. I like the guy a lot both as a character and a player and I love his compete level but I have a really hard time buying the notion that a baseball player buys legal supplements from Tony Bosch. GNC would be a more reasonable destination.

NatsJack, more troubling than Span's OBP is his poor baserunning. With the caught stealing, pickoffs and doubleplays on balls in the air he is in the .290s. He has to draw walks and never upper cut on a swing. Span doesn't have 1 flyball hit all year only balls in the air categorized as line drives.
Mark posted his game post yesterday at 3:33. By this time (4:20 pm), the big news had broken and there were over 75 comments on the post.
I am hoping that DSpan just needs some time to get used to the completely different pitchers. He is money in the outfield, though.

I am concerned a bit about Karns and his tendency to give up the long ball. I am not convinced he's ready but it is what it is.
Well hopefully Stras is only down until the 15th. I wonder who will take his spot? Tweets are saying AAA call up.
Apparently Det is feeling ok and will make a start in the minors. Saturday either Stammen or a call up.

You are correct. Span's entire offensive value revolves around getting on base often. I don't think we'll ever see a robust running game as long as Davie is running this team but Ghost is also correct in that Span hasn't been a good base runner and that is really surprising to me.
And I am glad that Stras is being honest and prudent about this. We need him for the rest of the season. When we make our big run. You know, when everyone is back. Whenever that is. Muscles in sides and backs are nasty little things. Boo.
I frankly suspect that the team expected Stras would need to go to the DL the whole time, but given his reaction in the dugout after they pulled him, they were going to be very careful to take it one incremental step at a time. That way they would minimize the risk that he would do anything physical that could set him back, while respecting his, let's just say competitive, youthful, and somewhat rash determination to get back out there immediately.
Am sure also that they've been doing this in close coordination with Boras, whose long-term financial self-interest here coincides with Stras', even if Stras is too young and headstrong to get it. So the idea that some have raised here, that Stras will bolt to another team as soon as he becomes a free agent, is both premature and nonsense as far as what Boras or most other agents would advise (from the standpoint of long-term player development practice).
On my timeline, looks like Byron Kerr won the "first tweet about Strasburg to DL Derby" by a whisker over Adam Kilgore, Mark Zuckerman, and Amanda Comak in that order. Congrats Byron.

This umpire, Jordan Baker, would take a rather large (large enough to be photographed from the stands) hunk of gum out of his mouth every half-inning and chuck it into left field. There is a photo showing about 20 such hunks on the field.
When fans raged at him, he went and had a laugh with Angel Hernandez who then took HIS gum out and chucked it in the direction of the jeering fans. On top of that, he seems to be making terrible calls and throwing people out left and right.
It seems at this point the TV announcers have gotten in on the act and were calling Baker out on his gum antics last night.

I was confronted by a large, very drunk young Phillies fan about 3 years ago in one of the Nats parking lots after a Phillies victory. The animal got in my face and yelled "Great game, huh." It was obvious he was baiting me. I looked him right in the eye and said "I really like the Phillies team and wish the Nationals played like them". At first he was shocked, then he slapped me on the back and said "Thanks buddy". I could live for another day. Going to any sports game nowdays and wearing a hated team's sports garb is risky business.
How did Julie A get scooped by Kristina A? She's not on the air until 6:30 pm, but she tweeted the news at 4:29, just four minutes after Mark and the other beats did. Kristina's doing a great job on MLB Now, but she's not at the park.

Looks like Ohlendorf is the guy. Should be an okay option for one start, I guess.
Karns is a bit home-run prone in the majors, which is a bit funny because avoiding them was one of his strengths in the minors. He probably needs more seasoning in AA/AAA before he's ready to be up permanently, but he's certainly been promising so far and could develop into at least a lights-out reliever in the Stammen mode if starting doesn't work out.
Current DL list: Detwiler, Espinosa, Harper, Mattheus, Ramos, Strasburg. Plus two players released. Plus Werth and Zimm have spent time on the DL. That's 10 of the opening day roster, or 40%, who've been injured or terribly ineffective enough to be released. Kind of boggles the mind.
I thought we were snake bit last year, but our starters stayed healthy. Only needed Lannan for double headers and we played piggy back with Wang and Det a bit. It's just a shame there is so much pressure- some of it by us fans-- on this team to produce the same way the ideal roster might be performing. Bench just not quite stepping up as early as they did last year, pen not quite so effective, couple starters down. Doesn't take much to get off track. As long as we can stay around .500 maybe we can make a run in the second half.
Karns needs to work on his location... He's got the stuff but he sometimes serves it up and gofers it...
I'm glad that the Nats went with Ohlendorf instead of moving Stammen to the starters role.
Think they want to save Stammen for Karns start.... He seemingly can only go 80/85... And Stammen has been throwing the serious heat, they may want to save him.. At least that's what I'm thinking....

But in all fairness, Karns came up from AA , unexpectedly. Of course he is going to have flaws and struggles. This could be a great thing for him- show him what he needs to do and encourage him that he is not so far away. As a fan I need to chill, watch the guys play, enjoy the new guys and stop stressing about the standings. Stuff has happened that changed our situation. I need to adjust my expectations. I still think we can have a great second half.
Johnny Cueto is already back on the DL with another lat strain. He had been back for 4 starts. Jeez.
I am telling you-- lats and obliques are nasty to get rid of. Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez have both dealt with lingering hamstring issues. You have got to let them heal or you are a yo- yo to the DL.

Why does this keep coming up about the locker? Rizzo confirmed in comments that aired on 106.7 yesterday at ~5:15 p.m. that Espi is going to AAA after the DL. Hence the cleaned out locker.
As of yesterday, everyone was curious about the locker issue before the whole story came out. It initially looked like an option to AAA because of that. Also reports were that it was done on anger, guys don't clean out their lockers for the DL. And everyone rehabs in the minors.

I think you may be confused. Rizzo strongly implied that Espinosa will be optioned to AAA even after he is healthy to spend some time to get his mechanics right. Not just a rehab assignment.
Confrontation is risky, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that the guy was asking for it. Also, I suspect that this could happen at any park, with any fanbase. As my dear departed grandpa-in-law often said, I might have told you this before, but it's worth telling again. I was once at an O's/Nats game at RFK. There were some unruly, over-imbibing Nats fans seated a few rows over and down from us, in the upper deck. They were giving the fish eye to some O's fans (who were doing nothing offensive, just sporting O's gear) for several innings. The O's fans included a young boy, btw. This got no response, so the Nats fans decided to up their game and start throwing stuff, including beverage containers, at the O's fans. I went to the top of our section and told an usher about it (we didn't have texting and Tweetering back then, kiddies, but I digress). After a while, she went over and said something to the Nats fans, and they stopped.
I've also saw a similar event at Nats Park, that time involving unruly, over-imbibing Phillies Phans who threw popcorn on a young Nats fan. (Stay classy, Phillies Phans. But I digress.)
I don't care who is behaving in such a manner, or where they're doing it. There's no room for it, and no excuse for it. Just another natsfan1a editorial.

Boy, that was a long comment, and I didn't even mention the unruly (but apparently not under the influence judging by his breath) O's fan who "accidentally" bumped into me, several times, on the ramp after a recent O's game at Nats Park, then apologized in a rather Eddie Haskellian manner. And now I've dated myself, too.
Er, on topic, hope that Dan has another good start in him. May the Nats bats hit early and often, and may the Mets bats flail with futility. May our defense not falter. May we score more runs than the opposing team. Oh, and nobody should get hurt. Okay, that should about cover it. I'm good.

Seen EJax numbers and don't want any part of those. I would have preferred keeping Lannan over EJax, but Haren for one year seemed reasonable. DL for Lannan wasn't something that was foreseeable.

Only once did we actualky get into a slugfest this season and we lost that 7-6 lsst Wednesday, well it up to the hitters now to get as serious as Met hitters have.
