Tracy activated, Brown optioned

With less than one hour remaining until MLB's 4 p.m. trade deadline, the Nationals have added a key, veteran bat to their bench ... just not via a trade.

Chad Tracy has been activated off the 15-day disabled list, a move that brings the most productive pinch-hitter in the majors back to the Nationals two months after he had sports hernia surgery.

To make room for Tracy on the 25-man roster, the Nationals optioned outfielder Corey Brown to Class AAA Syracuse.

Tracy, 32, hit .375 (13-for-37) with one homer and five RBI in 12 games on a rehab assignment with Syracuse and Class A Potomac, with eight hits over his last 13 at-bats.

Though he hasn't played since late-May, Tracy still leads the majors with nine pinch-hit RBI this season.

See you in September Corey (stay healthy)

Werth is taking batting practice with the team trying to pigeonhole Davey into activating him. Tyler Moore looks like he may be next to Syracuse until September.

That's the message I got when Davey bumped Moore out for Brown and put Morse at first base for LaRoche.

He's sticking with the eight man bullpen ... I guess he figures if an injury occurs he has DeRosa for the rest of that game and Brown or Moore are a phone call away.

Yep. Then he can send Werth to the bench, right Michele?

Many other teams are dumping guys younger than Werth. And Soriano is actually hitting and playing better! It'll happen ... might not happen right away but if he doesn't perform and it affects the won/loss record you'll see that change quickly I suspect.

Imagine that. Sooner or later a 32 yo + outfielder is going to get benched. That's pure clairvoyance.

I think sooner you think later. And Rizzo claimed he would be a starter at age 38?

I guess we'll see.

26 minutes left. If I had to guess it would be Garza if the Nats were going to do anything at this point. Lannan bundled in the trade.

NatsJack.. Let it drop please, just so we don't have to have the rants or name calling anymore.

Full disclosure: I am Corey Brown's cousin's godmother (practically related) ...so, I have a vested interest and little doubt in his continued success with the National's organization. We look forward to seeing him play here in Washington soon again....keep the faith Corey Brown...you'll be back!

Looks to me like your "rat pack" pal Natsjack is gloating and being very obnoxious. So typical of you people ... miserable is the word I would use. You have to try to pile on someone else to make yourselves feel good. Very mature. ~laughing~ YOU are your own worst enemies I have nothing to do with your own innate desire to feel validated by this silly blog.

They didn't go for Span or anyone similar so it looks like they've decided to see what Corey can do which is a good thing.

Amber Theoharis is on the field and Werth played a great practical joke on her but she didn't fall for it.

As Amber tweeted "Werth just said Blanton told him he's about to throw a bp in B-more Guess he didn't check the Os schedule before trying to prank me"

Os are on the road in NYY

Rizzo sends valuable players to Syracuse and continues to waste a valuable roster spot on Henry Rodriguez, who is completely worthless. The Dodgers, Giants, Braves and Reds improved while the ever cautious Rizzo stood pat. His loyalty to Rodriguez is going to cost the team before the season ends.

Two Class A pitchers going from Rangers to Cubs for Dempster.

Baltimore didn't want to give up much for Blanton which is smart.

Werth is going to have to put up or else if they option Tyler Moore given his offensive stats. He doesn't do well under pressure as we observed last year.

If Tracy and Werth don't produce Davey is going to look bad and doubtless he won't be happy.

Yes, Corey was certainly impressive. Can run for a white boy too

I think Rizzo may actually give more value to our prospects than Peric. Very upset that nothing was done. Sobering reminder that the Nationals have accomplished absolutely NOTHING yet. Just about every team in contention just got better in the last week. Sometimes you have to give up a prospect to get an important piece. The Cardinals just gave up a 1st Rounder for Edward Mujica. I guess they are stupid, too. Or maybe the Nationals are just perfect.

Will be interesting to see how Davey handles it if Werth comes back and gets off to one of his 2 for 22 starts with 10 k's thrown in. This team is clicking right now. Shark is rolling, Moore is productive off bench. I just think Werth coming back couldn't of been timed worse. And we send down a young Corey Brown, who is hungry and has those young legs.

Chemistry is a delicate thing Fear. I'm glad Riz didn't do something stupid. We are fine

And if they do procude he will look good which is what usually happens. Why are you so negative? Are you a fan of another team and just sit on here to screw with us Nats Fans?

Phillies are gonna just be a shell of a team tonight. Hopefully Stra will come out and just manhandle them with low gas tonight.

I didn't think Rizzo would do anything stupid, and he didn't. Corey will be back in September. He'll be getting reps every day in AAA, and would not be seeing much action in the bigs, if he stayed here.

Tracy is a terrific asset off the bench. We'll see how Jason does. He's always been streaky. With Zim, Harp, ALR, and others, the pressure is off him now.

The Nats have an embarrassment of riches, and no reason to throw any of it away for short-term reasons. They must be thinking that Desi will be back soon, but Davey said he would be satisfied with Josh Johnson, if he had to go with him. Don't know if he meant it, but that's what he said.

JFlo looks like he's playing hurt. I would feel better with Solano back there than Leon. Maybe they are comfortable waiting for Solano to make it back, or maybe Rizzo has something else in mind.

Not reading Peric but the responses from others are hillarious. Amazing how he gets under people's skin.

Frediemac, I have suggested more than once that Peric will be most happy when we fail and he is proven right. He cares more about that then the success of our team. Great news here is whatever his reply will not be read by this old fan.

MichelleS - I too will stop but its so much fun to poke the bear.

Go Nats!!

Jayson Werth's playoff slash lines:

Overall: .268/.379/.608
World Series: .351/.500/.676

Obviously. Werth can't handle the pressure.
