Harper homers in second rehab game
Bryce Harper appeared in his second rehab game with the Single-A Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run in three at-bats.
Harper was the team’s designated hitter due to rainy conditions at Pfitzner stadium in a last minute move. He was originally slotted to play in left field.
Facing Myrtle Beach Pelicans starter Jerad Eickhoff, Harper struck out in his first at-bat. In his second time up he hit a home run to right field.
In Harper’s third at-bat he fouled a pitch off his right foot and needed a moment to shake it off. He then lined out to right field to end his day.
Harper was pulled in the seventh inning, as expected, after ramping up his workload from the day before. He is scheduled to play nine innings on Thursday night as the P-Nats close out their series with Myrtle Beach.
Harper has played a total of nine innings with Potomac during this rehab stint. So far he is 2-for-4 with a homer, walk, RBI, two runs, a stolen base, and a strikeout.
Potomac held on to beat the Pelicans by the score of 6-5. They are 2-0 with Harper in the lineup.
Harper was not allowed to speak to the media after the game, but tweeted that he is ‘one step closer.’
CSN will have full coverage of Harper’s third start in Potomac on Thursday. If he plays a full nine innings, as planned, he will speak to the media about his progress afterwards.
Check out the box score from Wednesday's game.

Just get the kid to DC already. Ramping up to 9 innings? He's 20 years old and his timing appears to be fine.

One scout in attendance at Bryce Harper's rehab game Tuesday said he was "shocked" at how well Harper ran. Like he was never hurt at all.
Good news!
I'm guessing he'll be in Bowie with the Senators over the weekend. And back in LF in Nationals Park next home stand.
Oooowe, that sounds good NatsLady. I'm with you, Don. Get him back to DC. Don't waste those HRs at Potomac.
This made me laugh.
Rookie Anthony Rendon had three more hits and is now hitting... well, this is a bit embarrassing. The Nationals calculators don't go past .299.

See you Mon (or Tue, not sure of the schedule) at the first game back!!!!!
Nah, I say let him play out the rehab in its entirety. I agree the swing timing isn't something he should waste time with, but I think it's worth waiting until the day after he plays 9 to activate.
lol at the calc joke, NatsLady
Tursday's Tidbits
- Of Soriano's last 10 appearances, he has six saves, zero blown saves or losses, and exactly one 1-2-3 inning.
- J Zim has a streak of 20 consecutive home starts -- which stretches well over a year -- without a loss.
- Billy Buckner started last night for the Angels. (So what?). He also got the last two outs of the game from the night before. Angels, btw, including last year, have won eight straight against the Tigers. (This year, the Angels are 5-0 against the Tigers, 30-43 against everybody else)
- Papelbon got his second save in his last six save chances last night. It's been 8 appearances since he's had a 1-2-3 inning.
And, I love this one so much I'm repeating it:
- Bryce Harper is 9 months younger than anyone else on his single-A Potomac team.
Holdin' Harps out of the Mets series???
Which World Series was Davey talkin' 'bout???? The one this year, or 10 years from now??
Wonk
I like the Rendon pick, but it doesn't mean he gets a pass on Haren--
I never said he gets a pass. I'm saying (again) that if someone criticizes Rizzo for snapping up injured players, they should take into account that five teams passed on Rendon because of injury, too.
Further, I'll say again, Haren was a good gamble. In 2011 he led the AL in starts, and had a 3.14 ERA. At age 30 that was his seventh consecutive 200+ IP season. He had back problems in 2012. So, now he's 32. Not all 32 year olds are washed up -- and if got even close to his 2011 form, it'd be a huge payoff on the gamble.

I read most of it. I guess I lost the silly Camden Yards post amidst the other silly ones. You know, the ones like these:

Some of you are easy to please. Have to do better with a pitcher who was in trouble. No outs, men on 3rd and 1st and only 1 run scores?
Thats not good.
I got lost in the arguments about Virginia vs Maryland. I live in DC...
Of Soriano's last 10 appearances, he has six saves, zero blown saves or losses, and exactly one 1-2-3 inning.
Right. Of course, the three appearances all before that, all saves, were 1-2-3 innings. Fun with selective splits. As I noted last night, looking at all 21 of his saves, he has seven 1-2-3 innings and seven one hit or walk innings. He's one guy who has been as good as, if not better than, expected.
And best of all, he works quickly, unlike too many of our relievers. Ahem, Drew.
Just saw this--
Nats (as a team, excluding pitchers). Over the last 7 days, best in the NL, third in MLB after Red Sox and Tigers.

hmmmmmmm.... Eck is improving?
"hmmmmmmm.... Eck is improving?"
Dang! They shoulda fired the guy while they still had a reason!
Interesting thoughts on Rendon in the last thread. I'll be disappointed if he's moved down in the lineup, but in the end batting order doesn't much matter so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. The guy seems capable of hitting wherever you put him. And day by day, his defense is getting more confident and more solid.
I think the confidence has always been there...he just needs to better pace himself on fast-moving plays. When he boots, that almost always seems to be the reason.
And, that's not to say he *can't* pace himself on such plays. He absolutely can, and has been part of some fantastic DPs or attempted DPs.
Sometimes, though, he seems to react to the clock in his head more so than the timing playing out before him. I think this will fade over time. In the meantime, his hitting has contributed far, far more than his errors have given away.
If you are not local, Nats/D-Backs is the free game on MLB.tv today.

Right. Of course, the three appearances all before that, all saves, were 1-2-3 innings. Fun with selective splits.
I think, 222, the key phrase there is: fun with selective splits. In fact, I am a fan of Soriano (my comment was not meant to disparage him), and, you're right, he's had a good number of 1-2-3 innings.
The key stat for me is this: he has 21 saves and 3 blown saves. That seems like a good percentage, no?
Or, more importantly, during those 10 appearances, and I found it important to note: zero blown saves.
What I like about Soriano is that even when he is _not_ on (I don't think he was "on" for either last night or the night before) -- he can still get the job done.
But the tidbits I put up are all in fun, and, I hope, of some interest to stat geeks.

Lol . . . . well put!
This is what we have before the All-Star Break.
@ Mets - 3
Brewers - 4
Padres - 3
@ Filly - 4
@ Fish - 3
Only the Padres have a record over .500. It should be possible to CLEAN-UP on these teams with Harper and Ramos back.
Here is what Atlantay has, just for comparison.
vs Arizona - 3
vs Fish - 3
@ Filly - 3

vs Cincinnati - 4
Perhaps the Nats should start playing in January, so that they'll be hitting by the time opening day comes around ;-)
Agreed Wonk, not criticism of your post intended. I'm just on a mission to combat the developing conventional wisdom that he's always an adventure. Bob and FP said last night that they couldn't remember any 1-2-3 innings. Well, their memories are pretty short, since he had one on June 20 in Colorado.
You're absolutely right that whether he gets the job done is the bottom line. The fact that he almost never walks the leadoff batter is a big part of that. If our other relievers could just learn that from him, we'd be much better off.

Here's the executive summary. Ghost of Steve M. and his lackeys, most of whom have rarely if ever set foot in either Nats Park or Camden Yards, went on and on and on and on about the superiority of the Nats fanbase over the Balti"morons". They seem to equate Baltimore with Angelos. They need to get over that. I would challenge any of them to go to Baltimore and ask anyone on the street "Who do you hate more? A smug Washingtonian like me, or Angelos?" I guarantee the answer would be Angelos. Although they might have to think about it a bit first.
Lackeys? I thought he only had ilk. I guess you've come up in the world, Ghost.
I'm not sure I'll ever understand why people take such offense at comments by random personas on the Intertron. Why not just...y'know...laugh and move on?
NOW! What I do want to know is why Baltimore gets shafted during the scene in Cars 2 where people are calling in to talk about the Allinol World Grand Prix. LAME! ;)
There should be stats to measure stuff like that, though, rather than leaving it up to scouts to "eyeball" and assess. Maybe "Babbling Average on Posts Off-Topic" (BAPOT) could measure whether a poster is good, or just getting lackey.
"Maybe "Babbling Average on Posts Off-Topic" (BAPOT) could measure whether a poster is good, or just getting lackey."
Ha! I foresee a glossary update in the near future.
Eric, to be fair, Baltimore got "The Wire"; all DC got was "The District." ("West Wing" doesn't count, that wasn't about DC.)
Baltimore gets better songs, too. There aren't any good songs about DC.
Yes...I was kind of partial to "ilk".
Maybe they should have a club, like a lodge.
Not to mention this

Bob and FP said last night that they couldn't remember any 1-2-3 innings. Well, their memories are pretty short, since he had one on June 20 in Colorado.
Hoo boy, that comment rankled me, too (I yelled out "what?!" at the TV), because I remembered the one on Jun 20 myself (my anniversary!)
Comments like that make me think that FP and Bob just aren't very serious.
I don't think Dave and Charlie would make a mistake like that.
Let's not forget about The Lonesone Death of Hattie Carroll.
The only DC songs I know of are Leadbelly's Bourgeois Blues, and Parliment's Chocolate City (talk about cognitive dissonance!).
"Baltimore gets better songs, too."
That video was fantastic, thanks for sharing.
DC and Bmore both get shout outs by Martha and the Vandellas!

Doesn't Carp have the most comprehensive scorebook ever created, or something like that? You'd think he could look stuff up.
Eric, that's not even Nina Simone's best version, it's just the first one I found.
The song was great; the pictures were better. Really compelling stuff.
Zappa. Poe. Waters. Cal. Boh. Hon.
Bmore has a lot to be proud of.
Mark Zuckerman @ZuckermanCSN
Bryce Harper scheduled to play 9 innings tonight and Saturday for Harrisburg at Bowie. On course for Monday return to #Nats.
Me: I nailed that one, see the top of the comments...
So we're agreed. Baltimore has better songs, better food, a better ballpark and better fans. DC has better d*****bags.

Me: Better ballpark & food. That's it. When I take my yearly visit there, I still can't beleive they got rid of Uncle Teddy's Perzels, they were the best!
Only thing I agree with in that list is the part about the ballpark.
I do love the ongoing chip on your shoulder over this, though, d'grviii! Almost as much as I love Bmore (which I really do).
Baltimore got "The Wire"; all DC got was "The District." ("West Wing" doesn't count, that wasn't about DC.)
Yeah, and neither The Americans nor House of Cards were filmed in DC either.
I don't have a chip on my shoulder, Eric. It's the Ghost of Stevistas who have the chip on their shoulder. Even though they've never been to Baltimore, as soon as anyone says anything at all favorable about that city, its fans or its team, it sets them off.
Oh, OK, my bad.
The Rita Jenrette and Fanne Foxe sex tapes weren't filmed in DC either. But only because sex tapes hadn't been invented yet.
WHOA! Duh.
DC produced the Duke. Game, set, match! ;)
Wow, David Grohl (Nirvana drummer) jumped off from DC. I had no idea.
And, of course, there's Go Go/Chuck Brown.
Sorry, I'll stop now ;).
What??! We haven't said a word against Baltimore all day.
But DC does have better nuclear weapons. So there.
Tell me about it (yawn). I'm from California.
