The Nationals blasted the Twins 7-0 in today's first game, the perfect way to kick off a doubleheader. Now they send RHP Nathan Karns (0-1, 6.00) to the mound to try and lock up a series win. Karns is making his third career start, already his second against an American League team after facing the Orioles in his MLB debut.
Pitching for the Twins is 29 year old Samuel Deduno (2-1, 3.44 ERA). A four-year pro, Deduno has just 103 major league innings under his belt and has yet to face the Nats. He will go up against a Washington lineup fresh off a blowout win just hours earlier. We'll see if their hot bats can carry over into the night.
The updated lineups are below with Denard Span back in the mix and Roger Bernadina batting second. The Twins also have a different look with Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham set to play.

7:20 p.m. -- Things got very interesting for Karns very early in this one, but he managed to get out of the inning with no runs across. After getting the leadoff hitter out, Karns allowed back-to-back singles and then hit Willingham to load the bases. He then induced two flyouts, one to Denard Span who held the runner with a perfect throw home, and another an infield popout by Hicks. 22 pitches for Karns through one.
7:37 p.m. -- The Nats continued their offensive surge of earlier today in the bottom of the first, seeing three men get on base and a run come across. It's 1-0 Washington after a Werth single scored Roger Bernadina from second. He had reached on a single to left field and was joined on base by Zimmerman who walked. Deduno threw 28 pitches in the first (16 strikes).
7:55 p.m. -- The Nats' lead in this one would not last long as the Twins put two on the board in the second. Karns walked each of the first two batters before Deduno bunted them into scoring position. Herrmann then crushed a double off the wall in right-center field to score the runners. Karns is at 55 pitches (29 strikes) after two innings.
8:02 p.m. -- Not much to report on for the Nats' offense in the second inning. They saw one guy get on base as Solano recorded an infield single, and Karns bunted him to second, but that was as close as they got. Deduno has thrown 38 pitches (23 strikes) so far.
8:12 p.m. -- The Twins added to their lead in the third with some two-out hitting off Karns. Escobar singled up the middle and Florimon then hit a two-run homer to right field to give Minnesota a 4-1 lead. Karns has labored through three with 74 pitches (43 strikes) already.
8:27 p.m. -- Washington got another run across to chip away at the Twins' lead off another RBI single by Werth to bring home Bernadina. The Nats are now down 4-2 as Craig Stammen replaces Karns. The rookie is done after throwing 74 pitches through three innings, allowing four earned runs.
8:33 p.m. -- Stammen cruised through the top of the Twins' order in the fourth, getting Carroll, Herrmann, and Mauer all to ground out. He needed just ten pitches to exit the frame. Rendon, Solano, and Stammen are due up next.
8:37 p.m. -- A quick three outs for Deduno who retired the bottom of the Nats' lineup in order. The Twins right-hander has thrown 70 through four including just ten in that inning. 20 total pitches between both teams in the fourth.
8:47 p.m. -- Another 1-2-3 inning for Stammen who is pretty good at this long relief thing. The third out was on a Hicks grounder to third that Zimmerman grabbed bare handed and fired to first on the run. A high degree of difficulty, yet he made it look easy. Stammen at 27 pitches through two innings of work after the top of the fifth.
8:59 p.m. -- A brief rain delay here at Nats Park as the sky all of a sudden opened up and it just started pouring. Tarp came out, but was removed within ten minutes. We're about to get started again here.
9:15 p.m. -- The Nats added another run to cut the lead to 4-3, but could have scored more with the bases loaded and one out. LaRoche brought Span home from third with a long sac fly to right field before Desmond struck out to end the inning. Erik Davis now in to pitch.
9:29 p.m. -- Davis allowed a leadoff triple to Escobar, but the Nats were able to escape thanks to some timely pitching and a terrific defensive play by Rendon. Abad replaced Davis to get the last two outs of the inning and got Morneau to pop up and Carroll to line out. Rendon made a leaping grab to retire Carroll who was inches away from having an RBI double into the gap. 4-3 Twins as we move to the bottom of the sixth.
9:46 p.m. -- Two hours and 40 minutes into this thing and we have a whole new ballgame. The Nats tied it up at 4-4 off an RBI triple by Span to score Rendon. Rendon led the inning off with a single to left field after making the run-saving catch in the top of the inning. This kid is pretty legit.
10:08 p.m. -- The Nats completed their comeback by taking the lead off a Desmond RBI double to score LaRoche. That's 12 straight games Desmond has recorded a hit. Drew Storen in to work the eighth.
10:18 p.m. -- Storen gets through the eighth, even with a two-out error by Rendon. Rendon let a fairly routine grounder sneak through his legs to extend the inning. He's still learning. Nats still up 5-4 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.
10:26 p.m. -- Three up, three down for the Nats who will send Rafael Soriano out looking for his 16th save of the season.
10:37 p.m. -- Soriano shuts it down, untuck. 16th save. Nats win 5-4 and are back at .500 with a record of 31-31.

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 338 Newer› Newest»Woot! 1st comment. I really enjoyed that first game and all the young guns. Let's go get this win!!!
If hey score more then again 7 then is it 100% off?
Go, TBD! Go, NATS!!
I'll vote for that SC!
GO NATS! GO KARNS! GO BATS! GYFNG!!!
I would love 100% off.. :)
SCNatsFan, clever! I like that math!
Whoaaa, Alex Meyer who the Nats traded for Denard Span is on the MiLB DL with a shoulder strain.
Why Roger? And, if so, why bat him second?
sm13: There's no good reason. Just none.
Surprised to see Marrero in the game, when I tuned in during the 6th inning.
ARen is hitting as advertised. Nice not having someone in that part of the lineup that isn't striking out!
GoooooooooBulldog II; GoooooooooooooooARen!!!!
Only reason I can think of is better defense against the bombs our young lad may induce.
Maybe Davey has gone senile. What changed from last season? He managed the lineup extremely well last year. Harper, one of the best batters, hit 2nd. Why did he revert to this traditional-but-stupid idea that we need a poor hitting, low walk guy hitting 2nd? Whether that is Bernadina or Lombardozzi is irrelevant. They should be batting 7th or 8th, and Werth should bat 2nd.
Just got to our seats. Singing Anthem. I've never seen so few people here. (Sec 310 row B)
Reiterating, Scott. Just knocked on wood.
Kind of thought that might happen tonight.
Even if Davey waned to bat Werth 4th to spark the lineup, Rendon or Kobernus would have been a better choice to bat 2nd.
Annnnnndddddddd hello (again) folks!
Good to be back with ya.... Hoping we can win again this evening... Not surprised to see Zook sit this one... Hopefully Solano can make some solid contact and not hit those little squibblers he seems to always hit...
Hey Karns, be nice if you can bring your ERA down some...
Agree....why Roger? He has been a pair of shoes in the batters box this year.
Roger has actually been better at the plate the last 2/3 weeks....
Yeah, Davey needs to get Rendon up to 2nd in the order pronto.
Makes little sense to have Bernie up there. Especially when it puts two of your lefthanded bats back to back.
How is the attendance at the park tonight? I was supposed to go to the game but saw rain on the radar and gave my tix to my dad...
Location, location, location with Karns.....
Not a good start Karns...
If Nate can't throw the off-speed stuff for strikes, the Twins will feast on his fastball.
What a difference a pitcher makes, huh? Come on Karns... Settle down....
Nice job, Denard!
Great throw Span....
I frickin love Span as our CFer....
Sweet.. gets out of it...
Aight.... *clap, clap*. aight Karns.... Way to get out of it!
Houdini, baybee
The pitches that hit where still tough. Not over middle.
Well Mauer's hit was right over the middle and belt high. The others maybe.
If Espy bats PH it's Jeeves fault.
Just sayin
I do not like Julie A....
Stadium still 80% empty
Oh yeah Roger....
Roger my boy.....atta baby Rog!
Yes...... We are taking walks....
Yesssssssssssssss........ Roger and his speed.... Go Jay!!!!
Umm that's why u start Bernadina. :-)
Genius to have Bernadina batting 2nd. ;)
Shark with the speed to easily score on that
I guess Davey is not so senile?
And a brilliant send by Trent Jewett!
Lol... Someone questioned Bernadina batting 2nd.... *snickers*
Hahahaha, yes Sec 3... Will give Trent a nod for sending him....
Gonna need to some more runs for Karns because he ain't pitching a shutout. But loved how we worked the count, put together some hits and got a run in. And a walk!
I expect few there not originally scheduled, and those with tickets for Friday often do not go to games when the next day is a work day.
Come on Karns.... Throw strikes...
MrsB loves the Nats said...
I do not like Julie A....
She's no Kristina, that's for sure.
But, then, who is?
You can't keep walking people and expect this to end well, Nate. We need Detwiler back.
Your fielders can't help you if you walk them.
Danger, Will Robinson.
I just read about Mark's operation. You know it's a tough year for injures when the beat guy also goes down midseason.
Thanks goodness Chase already is on the 40-man.
Get well soon, Mark. We promise not to go over 65 with the family car while you're away.
Catty needs to go to the mound and visit....
Sunshine.. if Karns keeps this up.. I am going to need an early dose of Bourbon and Maalox.. Sheesh.. walking people..I hate that
I like the kid, but there's one thing about Karns' pitches that is pretty obvious:
Kid doesn't miss too many bats.
yup.. walks kill.. I hate that
Can't walk two guys and expect it not to hurt.
I'm sorry... Karns is a mess tonight... He is all over the place.... It's the 2nd inning and we are already thru the line up...
Karns has no command tonight. He can't find the zone and when he does, it's belt high. Gonna be a problem.
Karns can't find the SZ at all... This is terrible....
Another walk. This is bad.
This is the 3rd walk already.... Something's gotta give....
If he walks guys and he can't throw his off speed stuff for strikes, he'll have a third straight start of fewer than five innings.
C'mon Nate!
I thought Karns was a control pitcher. This isn't like Murderer's Row but give any team this many walks and it will bite you.
It's gonna be an earlier night for the BP.... But uhm, Karns did get a questionable call but he has got to learn to let it go and do his thing.....
I like Karns but he needs to work on his location....
He hasn't thrown a single offspeed pitch for a strike yet, has he?
Karns isn't going to be in this game for long.
If he can't throw an off-speed strike, Hammer might make this 5-1.
Omg... He is about to walk another batter.... What the hell is really going on....
His pitch count is at 53...
Well he minimizes the damage, but it's only a matter of time before the Twins have a huge inning.
Kid just doesn't have it tonight. If he makes it 4 it'll be a major accomplishment. I still think he can be a starter, but he clearly needs some more development time.
Lord have mercy.... That was painful to watch... Karns, yeah, time to go back down to the farms, son....
He may only see 4 tonight....

To think people were worried about him pitching in Colorado! Hah!
As Satchel Paige used to say, "Throw strikes. Home plate don't move."
Wonder why DJ didnt have Karns pitch to Zook and Jordan to Solano....
Karns with a good bunt.... Nice...
Solano and Karns have probably played together before in the minors, MrsB. I'm not positive of that but it would make sense.
Mrs. B, I think he might have been balancing out how many rookies he puts in each game. That, and Jordan seems to like pitching to Suzuki.
I guess I'm thinking about the vet presence.... I'm not sure if it matters who JZ pitches too....
But, thanks, both are sound answers...
Natsjack, I would so much rather have Taylor Jordan pitching than Karns. But then, I suppose that would require too much imagination on the part of management. Up to a point I bet you would agree.
I miss Carp....
I miss him, too.
Totally different Karns this inning....

Now Michele, you know the rules on the bourbon: No shots before the bullpen starts walking people in the seventh inning. What do you think we are around here, a bunch of alcoholics?
Now, come to think of it...
I loved Nats Jack's reference to Bally Star. At least Karns hasn't beaned anybody ... yet.
That stinks.
Sorry.... I spoke too soon.... Damn...
Repeat, he just doesn't miss many bats...
Deduno on deck with 2 outs. Huge mistake.
Karns not impressing anyone tonight.
We have to outsore them
Just when I thought he was starting to pull it together...
Not quite ready for prime time.
Karns just isn't thinking. You have the pitcher on deck. Get Floriman to expand. No reason it should be 4-1 right now.
.... Sigh.... I hope the Bats come on... What a damn difference a pitcher makes....
Yeah, you have to recognize your situation.... I think that's on Karns and Solano....
Since the Nats gave Edwin Jackson $11 million for 4.03 and gave Dan Haren $13 million for 5.45, I hope one of the home-grown guys becomes a more effective and much more economical fifth starter.
Karns doesn't look like he's that guy, so far, anyway.
Sammy Solis? Taylor Jordan? I hope we don't have to wait for Giolito.
Rally time... Come guys, lets cut into this lead.... Leadoff man on base! Way to go Roger!!!! Love that man...
Some of these stats that the baseball people come up with is kinda laughable....
Good baseball baby!!!! What a jump by Roger! Go head Ryan...
That is a great piece of hitting by Werth.
Yesssssss..... Another Werth RBI!!!! Go head Roger, taking advantage of the 2 spot!!!!
Move the line
Get this guy Nats!!!!
Dang....
That is awful. No outs and 2 on and the heart of the lineup on deck and in the hole.
Would've been nice to get more, but just keep chipping away.
We have Dedano on the ropes.... Come on guys....
But then again, if Karns/Solano don't give up the 2 run Hr, well it could be a 2-2 game....
ALR looked great the suddenly K 9n one no where near the plate.
Then the Desi ends inning with Dp. He swung at a ball no where near plate on second pitch. Could have had 3-0 count, then maybe not swing at 4th pitch.
When people ask me about approach. Not swinging at balls would help a lot.
Wow... Stammen already.... Hope it's the Stammen that pitched against Atl....
Espi's stock just sank a little lower with that play by Rendon behind second base.
Man, Jamey Carroll is having some rotten luck. The mound slowed that ball down considerably more than flat ground would.
Espi...my leading candidate to be Wally Pipped.
Nice inning Stammen.
Wish we saw that Stammen last night.
Good inning Nats! Aight guys.... Lets chip, chip, chip away again!
BTW, local angle: Wally Pipp went to CUA.
Dan Kolko @masnKolko
This probably will be Karns' last start with the #Nats before heading down. In his 3 starts: 12 IP, 17 H, 10 ER, 5 HR, 6 BB, 11 Ks.
_____________________________
Kind of what I was thinking that we won't see Karns again until September.
Rendon killed that ball right to Willingham.
Unlucky BABIP again. Frustrating! Rendon crushes that.
I love Jamey Carroll. I wish he'd have better luck, but nothing that harmed us,in heard yesterday that he was only a Nat for one year. I love him so much, I would have said we had him longer than that. I know 1a has a soft spot for him, too.
Mrs.B, you can't blame the onion for that two out dinger. He absolutely garunteed did NOT ask for that pitch to be left belt high.
Uhm... Solano must have missed the memo... Swing the damn bat...
What a play by RZ
On the run? No problemo.
It's a shared responsibility to acknowledge the situation.... 2 outs and the pitcher on deck.... And you're choosing to pitch to the hot hand....
All have to know the situation....
But Jane, I will say that Karns was absolutely wrong on the location, of course...
No problem with phone service at the park tonight. This place is 1/2 full.
Correct me if I'm wrong please, but I think Jane meant Solano might well have been intending to pitch around the guy, and wanted the ball off the plate.
I wasn't watching that AB, so I have no idea where he was set up.
But yeah, you can't let that guy beat you there.
Sec 3, it was certainly a mistake pitch and if Karns doesn't understand the strategy he can learn it back in the Minors. Disappointing.
Pouring rain. Later.
WTF? That came out of nowhere.
This is a small cell of rain, probably be over by the time they get the tarp out, but there's more behind it, much bigger, down by Charlotesville now, about 60-90 minutes out, I'd say.
Wow.... Rain came from nowhere.... I'm 1 mile away from Nats Park and it's not raining at my house....
Solano looked to be set up inside and low. Not what he got. But whatever. Man, the skies opened up fast! We can still win this. It's not official yet, right!? They can't just pull the plug on us, right?
And ... the rain just now hit Shaw, breaking up my neighbor's party. Or driving it indoors.
Chase Hughes @chasehughesCSN 31s
Tarp already coming off at #Nats Park, that didn't last long. #MLB #NationalsTalk
Sunshine, just reading back in the comments. I didn't realize The Cocktail couldn't come out till the bull pen is in. I've been breaking the rules for years. Especially this year. Sometimes by the second inning.
Sec 3, it was certainly a mistake pitch and if Karns doesn't understand the strategy he can learn it back in the Minors. Disappointing.
Gonat, yes, it was a mistake pitch. I might have misunderstood, but I thought the question was whether Solano should have gotten Karns to pitch around Florimon. But I agree on Karns, as well; that is the green showing, I guess.
And here comes the tarp back off.
Yeah, I thought it was on both Solano and Karns for the 2 run Hr.... 1st base open, the pitcher doesn't have his stuff, and you pitch to a dangerous guy when the pitcher is on deck and it's 2 outs...
I thought Solano should have and could have called for the intentional walk and faced the pitcher instead....
Jane disagreed but I will agree with Jane in saying that the location of the pitch that Solano called for (low, inside) was absolutely in the wrong spot....
I, also, didnt know the rules about The Cocktail.... I have miss doing it for a while...
Wow.... Another walk....
I think what I meant is WE KNOW guys are hitting dingers off Karns when he puts the ball over belt high, and he does it a lot. That means THEY know it too. No way any catcher sets up for that. And no way anybody he faces misses the meatball when it comes his way. I am glad we have Karns. He will become good. He is just, as Sofa says, green. Lord knows nothing I threw could make it across the plate, so I'm not dissing anybody.
Finally a lucky bounce!
We'll take it....
I see Davis is set to come in.... I think I would leave Stammen in, at least 1 more...
I just now saw your comment MrsB. I can see the intentional walk. I thought that call always came from the dugout, so I guess I was wrong.
I really want Carp back. Really really.
Argh.... Come on guys.... We need at least 1 here.... Come on!!!!
If we don't cash in here...
Guys! Do something!
I thought Adam got that one. Good productive AB at least.
Yeah, it's all good Jane... Yeah Karns needs to go down and work on his location... That is my biggest gripe with him, right now, but I recognize he isn't here to stay right now...
I think he has the stuff but location, location, location with him...
Damn, I thought that was gone.... But thanks Adam, a productive out!
Werth's first 2 at bats great. Then takes strike 2 down tge muddle, then a pop out to short. Just hit a fly not a pop . Strike 2. Was the pitch to fly out.
ALR fly was nice.
Need more runs. Go Ian
Thought that was gone. Take the Sac Fly.
OK, I'll move in favor of a general amnesty on previous infractions, but The Rule On Bourbon and Maalox is now on the NIDO Glossary.
Dont swing at balls.

No, Jane, you're fine. Davey's been into the bullpen by the second inning. So technically, that you're drinking by the second inning just means you're hallucinating enough to think the bullpen is actually being used when actually the starter is still in there. Not a problem. Cheers!
Ian, you TOTALLY went, there. Horrible AB.
Did Desi swing? What was that.
Well that was a wasted opportunity, but keep chipping away.
That was same place strike 1 was, so he knew ump is calling that a strike.
I can't even be mad at the blue.... He has been calling it all game....
Another poor inning with bases loaded and no outs. Nats don't blow it open.
I don't think I like Davis here.... But okay.... Wish we could have scored at least 2 more... Jason and Desi with poor at bats....
Thanks Sunshine!
I was counting on Ian to get a hit. I do not like that umpire now that we know it wasn't really a strike.
That inning showed why Nats are Under .500. Enough said.
Amazing how you weren't here posting when we won 7-0 earlier, SWM.
@Sec. 3: I've just read your glossary for the first time. I do believe you have the footnotes for a doctor thesis there. That's the hard part; now you merely need to write the thesis!
That's been a strike since inning 1. Umps bad but consistent. Ian getting in the habbit of not taking bat off shoulder
Terrible....
Our rookies except for Rendon and Krol...not looking so good.
Pretty nifty "jump" relay from Rendon right there. Darn near nailed the guy.
The memory of Espi keeps getting dimmer ... and dimmer ... dimmer
Yeah the blue has been consistent.... That's why I can't be made at him... He has been calling that a K since the beginning....
And I said before, I didnt like Davis here.... Thought we should have used Stammen at least 1 more inning....
That's cause I was at the game Proctor. You know the one where they started a major league pitcher.
Rendon is an upgrade we needed though.
So peaceful in here tonight. No combative imaginary friends dissing our guys. Nice.
Now just watch the Twins tack on some runs after the "big guys" of the Nats can't break it open twice.
*sigh*. Come on Abad.... Do your thang man!
Mark isn't going to Colorado or Cleveland with the team. So, does our illustrious host need to do a rehab assignment in Potomac or Syracuse?
ArVAFan
Spots on David Proctor. Troll alert.
Aight Abad.... Big out....
WOW. Stay away, Espinosa.
Ohhhhhhh SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA!!!!!!! Way to fricking Abad and RENDON!!!!!!!
Web Gem Rendon. Are you kidding me!
Rendon rocked it there!
All I have to say is I'm glad the Twins are as awful as the Nats at doing the little things.
Wow.... He got UP for that ..... Very Espi like....
Come on guys... Lets tie and take the lead this inning!
Time to score some runs Nats!
WOW! WOW! WOW!
What verticle leap!!!!
This guy can field tooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Carroll hitting it hard with no luck.
I predict we're gonna see the ball outta this guy's hands and we talk on more here.
Please can we keep him, Davey?
Sunshine, it's our glossary, I am just one more (humble) contributor.
Good gracious, what ups, and ANOTHER hit.
Lord Solano... Please don't do that stupid squibble hit here....
Wait, that liner Rendon caught was Jamey, again? Man, that's just ridiculous. Funny to me, but dang.
FP is such a homer. When balls bounced on Ryan Z a few weeks ago after a rain delay it was that turf stuff. The ball bounces funny on Jamie Carrol and its just a plain ole E.
Why is Chad Tracy coming out.... *sigh*
Rendon batting .300 now but who's counting!
Oh good... No Tracy....
