The Nationals blasted the Twins 7-0 in today's first game, the perfect way to kick off a doubleheader. Now they send RHP Nathan Karns (0-1, 6.00) to the mound to try and lock up a series win. Karns is making his third career start, already his second against an American League team after facing the Orioles in his MLB debut.
Pitching for the Twins is 29 year old Samuel Deduno (2-1, 3.44 ERA). A four-year pro, Deduno has just 103 major league innings under his belt and has yet to face the Nats. He will go up against a Washington lineup fresh off a blowout win just hours earlier. We'll see if their hot bats can carry over into the night.
The updated lineups are below with Denard Span back in the mix and Roger Bernadina batting second. The Twins also have a different look with Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham set to play.

7:20 p.m. -- Things got very interesting for Karns very early in this one, but he managed to get out of the inning with no runs across. After getting the leadoff hitter out, Karns allowed back-to-back singles and then hit Willingham to load the bases. He then induced two flyouts, one to Denard Span who held the runner with a perfect throw home, and another an infield popout by Hicks. 22 pitches for Karns through one.
7:37 p.m. -- The Nats continued their offensive surge of earlier today in the bottom of the first, seeing three men get on base and a run come across. It's 1-0 Washington after a Werth single scored Roger Bernadina from second. He had reached on a single to left field and was joined on base by Zimmerman who walked. Deduno threw 28 pitches in the first (16 strikes).
7:55 p.m. -- The Nats' lead in this one would not last long as the Twins put two on the board in the second. Karns walked each of the first two batters before Deduno bunted them into scoring position. Herrmann then crushed a double off the wall in right-center field to score the runners. Karns is at 55 pitches (29 strikes) after two innings.
8:02 p.m. -- Not much to report on for the Nats' offense in the second inning. They saw one guy get on base as Solano recorded an infield single, and Karns bunted him to second, but that was as close as they got. Deduno has thrown 38 pitches (23 strikes) so far.
8:12 p.m. -- The Twins added to their lead in the third with some two-out hitting off Karns. Escobar singled up the middle and Florimon then hit a two-run homer to right field to give Minnesota a 4-1 lead. Karns has labored through three with 74 pitches (43 strikes) already.
8:27 p.m. -- Washington got another run across to chip away at the Twins' lead off another RBI single by Werth to bring home Bernadina. The Nats are now down 4-2 as Craig Stammen replaces Karns. The rookie is done after throwing 74 pitches through three innings, allowing four earned runs.
8:33 p.m. -- Stammen cruised through the top of the Twins' order in the fourth, getting Carroll, Herrmann, and Mauer all to ground out. He needed just ten pitches to exit the frame. Rendon, Solano, and Stammen are due up next.
8:37 p.m. -- A quick three outs for Deduno who retired the bottom of the Nats' lineup in order. The Twins right-hander has thrown 70 through four including just ten in that inning. 20 total pitches between both teams in the fourth.
8:47 p.m. -- Another 1-2-3 inning for Stammen who is pretty good at this long relief thing. The third out was on a Hicks grounder to third that Zimmerman grabbed bare handed and fired to first on the run. A high degree of difficulty, yet he made it look easy. Stammen at 27 pitches through two innings of work after the top of the fifth.
8:59 p.m. -- A brief rain delay here at Nats Park as the sky all of a sudden opened up and it just started pouring. Tarp came out, but was removed within ten minutes. We're about to get started again here.
9:15 p.m. -- The Nats added another run to cut the lead to 4-3, but could have scored more with the bases loaded and one out. LaRoche brought Span home from third with a long sac fly to right field before Desmond struck out to end the inning. Erik Davis now in to pitch.
9:29 p.m. -- Davis allowed a leadoff triple to Escobar, but the Nats were able to escape thanks to some timely pitching and a terrific defensive play by Rendon. Abad replaced Davis to get the last two outs of the inning and got Morneau to pop up and Carroll to line out. Rendon made a leaping grab to retire Carroll who was inches away from having an RBI double into the gap. 4-3 Twins as we move to the bottom of the sixth.
9:46 p.m. -- Two hours and 40 minutes into this thing and we have a whole new ballgame. The Nats tied it up at 4-4 off an RBI triple by Span to score Rendon. Rendon led the inning off with a single to left field after making the run-saving catch in the top of the inning. This kid is pretty legit.
10:08 p.m. -- The Nats completed their comeback by taking the lead off a Desmond RBI double to score LaRoche. That's 12 straight games Desmond has recorded a hit. Drew Storen in to work the eighth.
10:18 p.m. -- Storen gets through the eighth, even with a two-out error by Rendon. Rendon let a fairly routine grounder sneak through his legs to extend the inning. He's still learning. Nats still up 5-4 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.
10:26 p.m. -- Three up, three down for the Nats who will send Rafael Soriano out looking for his 16th save of the season.
10:37 p.m. -- Soriano shuts it down, untuck. 16th save. Nats win 5-4 and are back at .500 with a record of 31-31.

He said the ball took a tricky bounce because of the wet surface.
It's a good day to be Anthony Rendon. Forecast for tomorrow is: another good day to be Anthony Rendon.
Why did he pull the back on the 4yh pitch looked right in the middle, checked game track they said middle too.
Again bad approach, if you are going to bunt then do it.
FP is such a homer.
I like homer announcers. YMMV.
Come on.... Walk Lombo....
THERE YOU GO SPAN!
Yessssss..... I FRICKIN love Span.... And Trent with another good send....
Span bails out Solano.
I swear Trent Jewett is going to get a heart attack "wind-milling" guys home.
C'mon Roger!
Bernadina is heating up. 2 hits, 2 walks. And it's not just tonight.
Good. Job guys. Way to fight back

Summoning!
Another Walk..... Yessssss..... Come on Ryan.... Another hit baby.... Another hit....
Lets take the lead here!
2 out bunts on a firstbaseman back is rarely done,
Though to me it is a brilliant play with man on third.
MNF, back to Lombo, PitchTrack had it on the inside black, coming back in from way inside. And I doubt he was bunting there.
That was a nasty last pitch.
Got dammit... Ryan swinging at garbage..... And then looks at strike 3.... Come on man....
That just pissed me off....
Ok not to be negative. Hows does Zimmerman let that go by.
That strike 3 ended up down the middle but it was outside for a long time. It was a sharp 2 seamer, I guess.
What on earth?
Lets check swing on a ball a foot outside and just not move the bat on one right over the middle
Approach? Or eye sight? Or poor recognition?
Espi doesn't make that play.
I man crush Span lately
What was Zim looking for. That looked like a fastball right over the plate. I would hate to see the LOB #'s for Zim, Werth, LaRoche and Desmond.
But we are tied. It's like we are back to square one. I'll take it.
So so glad The Shark is back!
So so glad Johnnie H will be gone. The sweep? Hello? He was at that first game. Sheesh.
Next to Ian, I love Clip best.
OK, OK, OK. Attention, please. Clippard is on in the seventh in a tie game.
For those who want to be completely legal about it, Sunshine's Bar is officially and legally open.
Bourbon and Maalox all around for my friends, Barkeep!
Well it's back to 0-0 game.... Lets take the lead and don't look back next inning....
Still upset with Ryan for his at bat.... Just terrible....
I can't stand Tyler Clippard....
mrs b - don't ask
Wen i was talking about bunt I was talking about Solano not. lombo bnting would not be smart.
Here's a request sent out to "Ryan" -- from The Statue of Duke Ellington, which also just stands there.
Clip like little Clip cant get first guy out.
Sorry, MNF, I misunderstood you.
BABIP LUCK! Doubleplay
Awesome simple DP!
What a play by LaRoche.... Nice.... Was sitting here hoping for the DP....
Joe Mauer does his Jamie Csrroll imitation.
That was a nifty grab there for LaRoche.
Sunshine -- ill take a double.
Nate Karns off the hook after a ________ start.
MrsB. You gotta admit Tyler HELPED in that DP! And just now too. How can you hate him? He is Sui generis
Hahahaha Jane.... I can not stand Tyler Clippard... I do not believe in him at all.... I've never been a fan of his....
But that was a good inning for him....
Span second in NL. With 6 triples. Trails Brewers SS Gene Segura who has 8 including one that tied Phillies Thursday.
Gonat - "stupid" "predictable" are the only 2 safe words I can think of right now....
Uhm... I'd like to order 2 runs this inning, please? Thanks!
Lets win this! Braves won right?

GOTTA GET THERE .... YES!
Oh my lord... It's 10 o clock already! Oh yeah, way to go Adam!!!!!!
Love his blazing speed!!!!!
ALR...watch those headfirst slides. We only have so much bubblewrap around here, and Zimm has used a lot of it already.
ALR AND DESI!!!
Go nats!!! GYFNG!!
Willingham's glove finally cost the Twins! DESI!!!!
Ian
Yesssss..... And I was just about to cuss Desi out for first pitch swinging... Lol....
Good fundamentals in baseball..... Good on ya Desi!
That's the intensity we were discussing earlier, I believe.
Alright Rendon. Let's give Storen and Soriano some wiggle room.
Watching Willingham chase after that ball relieved me of my earlier calls for us to re-acquire him. No more Free Willy chants from me!
My old buddy Willingham. Still stinks in theOF.
Way to fight back, boys!
Rendon did not go.
Rendon did not go.... Bullish Blue....
I think he did, DP. Replay certainly looks like it.
That was bad on the ump. Bum!
I love that FP is a homer. And how much do I love Ian Desmond! Cookies for the dogs.closer to a CurlieW for the guys!
And THAT play personifies WHY the Nats traded Willingham and why they won't want to trade for him at the trade deadline this year ....
I thought Solano was good with the bat? What in the world happened?
Solano swinging for the Red Porch. Just need a single buddy.
Up to Drew and Mr. Untuck now.
Ian and first pitch fast ball over the middle is fine.
Tied for lead league in 0-0 counts with 16 hits
Solano just does not know how to hit.... I mean each and every time it's those dumb squibblers.... Ugh....

Will you take 1? Nats need some crooked numbers.
Yeah GoNat.... That was just horrible.... I wonder what his ERA is at this point????
10?
Just checked the radar again ... they would be well advised to finish this one in 9.
GoNat - imma have to take 1.... Would love to win this game 6/7 -4....
Come on Blue.... That was a strike...
That guy Adam LaRoche is great at 1st Base.... And Bless Storen's heart, he got to the bag!!!
I have criticized Adam for not making that play down the line the past week and I must congratulate him on making that one! Good job ALR
GoNat - imma have to take 1....
I think that was why LaRoche had to leave the first game, isn't it?
Ahhhh Rendon..... Dang....
Pick Anthony up, Drew.
Drew, grind your teeth and get this batter.
Com on Storen.... Pick up Anthony....
Good job Drew! Now let's add a run or two for Mr. Untuck.
its gonna happen, pick him up drew...and he does.
Way to pick each other up!
DRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
Hahahahahahahah Sec 3.....
Good job Drew.... Ya know, he has been Mr Dependable lately....
Aight, come on Nats.... I'd like 2 runs this inning.... Thanks!
Nice!
Sunshine - u r fired! Your bar is slowwww
I just knew DJ was gonna make us watch Mr. Chad 'Pop up' Tracy tonight.....
Interesting DJ.... Interesting....
If you're south and west of DC, around Warrenton, to 95, you are about to get wet again, if you aren't already. Much larger cell coming this way.
Rendon has to slide his entire body in front of that ball. Tough play but makeable just need to hold him to 1 base. Good job by Storen.
Big Cat, that didn't look like a professional AB by Kobernus.
He needed to get more in front of that, but he had time, it looked to me like he played it to the side (more like a third baseman, who shouldn't do it either, but that seems to be the way of things).
This strike has seriously expanded. The ump must want to get home ASAP. Anything even remotely close is being called. Better take advantage of that, Soriano.
Tuck in!
Span gave me a heart attack.... Thought that was gone....
Oh lord....and here comes the pressure.....
Come on Soriano... Do this....
OK, I have to go put a shirt on.
Roger takes one fairly high but right over.
That take weakness of these guy does need to go to completely get out of a season long TEAN hitting slump
Need a quick 1-2-3 Sori....
Let's GO Nats!!!!
Tucking it up here, boss.
Piche Soriano! Ponche Soriano!

Alright then. Whew.
Untuck!
This game IS over.
UNTUCKED.
UNTUCK!
Whew..... Man, I tell ya.. I need a drink....
This was a great game. We clawed back from behind, 1 run at a time. Did we waste opportunities? Yes. But we never gave up and just kept chipping away. This is a great win for the team. And we win the series!
Did you notice how Secret Wasian Man disappeared after the Nats tied it up. What a troll.
We came back from two down!
Soriano almost made me go to the maalix. 1-2 count with 2 outs to a walk. 0-2 on Mayer to a sinle. 8 pitches with 2 strikes 2 outs.
Willingham with his coaching from Eck helpedout.
What a game huh.... No make that... What 2 games... Love the sweep today....
I had a feeling we would win this game... It was so good to see the offense consistent thru out the game....
Got the series!!! Back to 500.... Nice job my Nats!!!!
Oh, let's not ruin it with poking.
"Speak of the devil" and a' that.
