Harper homers in second rehab game
Bryce Harper appeared in his second rehab game with the Single-A Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run in three at-bats.
Harper was the team’s designated hitter due to rainy conditions at Pfitzner stadium in a last minute move. He was originally slotted to play in left field.
Facing Myrtle Beach Pelicans starter Jerad Eickhoff, Harper struck out in his first at-bat. In his second time up he hit a home run to right field.
In Harper’s third at-bat he fouled a pitch off his right foot and needed a moment to shake it off. He then lined out to right field to end his day.
Harper was pulled in the seventh inning, as expected, after ramping up his workload from the day before. He is scheduled to play nine innings on Thursday night as the P-Nats close out their series with Myrtle Beach.
Harper has played a total of nine innings with Potomac during this rehab stint. So far he is 2-for-4 with a homer, walk, RBI, two runs, a stolen base, and a strikeout.
Potomac held on to beat the Pelicans by the score of 6-5. They are 2-0 with Harper in the lineup.
Harper was not allowed to speak to the media after the game, but tweeted that he is ‘one step closer.’
CSN will have full coverage of Harper’s third start in Potomac on Thursday. If he plays a full nine innings, as planned, he will speak to the media about his progress afterwards.

Just get the kid to DC already. Ramping up to 9 innings? He's 20 years old and his timing appears to be fine.

One scout in attendance at Bryce Harper's rehab game Tuesday said he was "shocked" at how well Harper ran. Like he was never hurt at all.
Good news!
I'm guessing he'll be in Bowie with the Senators over the weekend. And back in LF in Nationals Park next home stand.

Nah, I say let him play out the rehab in its entirety. I agree the swing timing isn't something he should waste time with, but I think it's worth waiting until the day after he plays 9 to activate.

Tursday's Tidbits
- Of Soriano's last 10 appearances, he has six saves, zero blown saves or losses, and exactly one 1-2-3 inning.
- J Zim has a streak of 20 consecutive home starts -- which stretches well over a year -- without a loss.
- Billy Buckner started last night for the Angels. (So what?). He also got the last two outs of the game from the night before. Angels, btw, including last year, have won eight straight against the Tigers. (This year, the Angels are 5-0 against the Tigers, 30-43 against everybody else)
- Papelbon got his second save in his last six save chances last night. It's been 8 appearances since he's had a 1-2-3 inning.
And, I love this one so much I'm repeating it:
- Bryce Harper is 9 months younger than anyone else on his single-A Potomac team.

I like the Rendon pick, but it doesn't mean he gets a pass on Haren--
I never said he gets a pass. I'm saying (again) that if someone criticizes Rizzo for snapping up injured players, they should take into account that five teams passed on Rendon because of injury, too.
Further, I'll say again, Haren was a good gamble. In 2011 he led the AL in starts, and had a 3.14 ERA. At age 30 that was his seventh consecutive 200+ IP season. He had back problems in 2012. So, now he's 32. Not all 32 year olds are washed up -- and if got even close to his 2011 form, it'd be a huge payoff on the gamble.

Right. Of course, the three appearances all before that, all saves, were 1-2-3 innings. Fun with selective splits. As I noted last night, looking at all 21 of his saves, he has seven 1-2-3 innings and seven one hit or walk innings. He's one guy who has been as good as, if not better than, expected.
And best of all, he works quickly, unlike too many of our relievers. Ahem, Drew.

Interesting thoughts on Rendon in the last thread. I'll be disappointed if he's moved down in the lineup, but in the end batting order doesn't much matter so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. The guy seems capable of hitting wherever you put him. And day by day, his defense is getting more confident and more solid.
I think the confidence has always been there...he just needs to better pace himself on fast-moving plays. When he boots, that almost always seems to be the reason.
And, that's not to say he *can't* pace himself on such plays. He absolutely can, and has been part of some fantastic DPs or attempted DPs.
Sometimes, though, he seems to react to the clock in his head more so than the timing playing out before him. I think this will fade over time. In the meantime, his hitting has contributed far, far more than his errors have given away.

I think, 222, the key phrase there is: fun with selective splits. In fact, I am a fan of Soriano (my comment was not meant to disparage him), and, you're right, he's had a good number of 1-2-3 innings.
The key stat for me is this: he has 21 saves and 3 blown saves. That seems like a good percentage, no?
Or, more importantly, during those 10 appearances, and I found it important to note: zero blown saves.
What I like about Soriano is that even when he is _not_ on (I don't think he was "on" for either last night or the night before) -- he can still get the job done.
But the tidbits I put up are all in fun, and, I hope, of some interest to stat geeks.

Agreed Wonk, not criticism of your post intended. I'm just on a mission to combat the developing conventional wisdom that he's always an adventure. Bob and FP said last night that they couldn't remember any 1-2-3 innings. Well, their memories are pretty short, since he had one on June 20 in Colorado.
You're absolutely right that whether he gets the job done is the bottom line. The fact that he almost never walks the leadoff batter is a big part of that. If our other relievers could just learn that from him, we'd be much better off.

Here's the executive summary. There should be stats to measure stuff like that, though, rather than leaving it up to scouts to "eyeball" and assess. Maybe "Babbling Average on Posts Off-Topic" (BAPOT) could measure whether a poster is good, or just getting lackey.

Hoo boy, that comment rankled me, too (I yelled out "what?!" at the TV), because I remembered the one on Jun 20 myself (my anniversary!)
Comments like that make me think that FP and Bob just aren't very serious.
I don't think Dave and Charlie would make a mistake like that.
