Game 25: Nats vs. Reds

The Nationals' starting rotation has put in a string of solid outings to help lead Washington out of the darkness of their four-game losing streak and sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals. Now it's Ross Detwiler's (1-1, 1.38 ERA) turn to take the hill and help his team go for a four-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds and set the Nats up well for their upcoming road trip.

Detwiler faced the Reds earlier this season and allowed zero runs through six innings. In four starts this year he has pitched at least through the sixth and allowed two runs or less each time out. Detwiler has a 2.48 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 29 innings in his career vs. Cincinnati, but is 0-3 in those games. Today he'll look for his first win against the franchise.

Pitching for Cincinnati is fellow young lefty Tony Cingrani. The former third round pick of the 2011 draft will be making his sixth appearance in a major league game and just his third start. So far this season he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched.

The Nats have dropped Adam LaRoche to sixth in the batting order after going hitless in his last 22 at-bats. Ian Desmond has moved up a slot after having a good day on Saturday with a walk, RBI, and run scored.

1:39 p.m. -- We are underway here at Nats Park. Game time temperature at 68 degrees with an overcast.

1:56 p.m. -- Taking three straight games in the fashion the Nats did would be tough against any team, especially one as good as the Reds. And so far today it looks like Cincinnati has no intention of going down four days in a row. Detwiler struck out Choo swinging to lead off the game, but gave up a string of hits that has the Reds up 2-0 after the top of the first. Cozart singled, Votto doubled opposite field down the line, and then Phillips batted both home with a line drive up the middle. After one Detwiler has thrown 35 pitches (24 strikes).

2:05 p.m. -- A crisp inning for Cingrani as the Nats go down in order. Denard Span lined out to left field before Espinosa went down swinging on a full count. Harper also worked Cingrani to 3-2, but promptly grounded out to second base. The Reds' lefty is at 17 pitches (9 strikes).

2:15 p.m. -- The Reds got another one across to make it 3-0 in the second, but honestly it could have been much worse. Cingrani got on because of a fluke play where his grounder hit the third base bag and bounced up and over a diving Rendon. Choo then reached base because Espinosa made an error trying to catch a throw from Rendon at second. Cozart then walked before Votto singled home the pitcher. Phillips lined into a 3-6 double play to end the inning. With all that went wrong, one run was all the damage. Detwiler at 53 (33 strikes).

2:24 p.m. -- It's only been two innings, but the Nats lineup is having no luck against Cingrani. The Reds lefty got through the order 1-2-3 on 15 pitches, striking out both Desmond and LaRoche to cap the frame. He is placing his fastball on the corners in the low to mid 90s and getting ahead early in counts. Maybe they will have more success after seeing him one time through the order. Cingrani is at 32 pitches (19 strikes) after two as we head to the third inning.

2:29 p.m. -- Detwiler finally has a quiet inning, needing just ten pitches to get through the top of the third. He let up a single to Frazier to begin the inning, but got a double play shortly thereafter by Jay Bruce. Bruce hit a hard grounder to LaRoche who tossed it to second and then caught the second out for a 3-6-3 turn. Paul then grounded out to end the inning. Detwiler at 63 pitches (40 strikes) through three. That quick frame could help him go a little deeper in this game, some runs would surely help as well.

2:35 p.m. -- Three up, three down for the Nats as Cingrani has retired them in order through his first look at the lineup. Rendon lined out to center, Suzuki popped out to shallow right field, and Detwiler went down looking. Cingrani is at 46 pitches (27 strikes).

2:47 p.m. -- Another run for the Reds who now lead the Nats 4-0. Corky Miller led off with a single that bounced off Detwiler's thigh. He was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cingrani. Choo grounded out to Espinosa which moved Miller to third. Miller was then sent home by Cozart with an infield single. Cozart hit a hard grounder to Rendon who made a diving grab, but couldn't make an accurate throw to first. LaRoche had to step off the bag which allowed Cozart to be safe. Detwiler at 81 pitches (53 strikes) through four.

3:02 p.m. -- The Nats finally made some noise against Cingrani, but leave the fourth with no runs scored. Span got on base after striking out as the final pitch got away from Miller at the plate. Espinosa then doubled down the RF line to get both in scoring position. Harper struck out swinging before Werth reached on a walk. Desmond and LaRoche, however, then struck out to end the inning. LaRoche is now hitless in his last 24 at-bats. He had words with home plate ump Sam Holbrook after going down looking on a high 96 mph fastball. Cingrani at 70 pitches (43 strikes).

3:07 p.m. -- The Reds didn't score in the fifth, but got two guys on base with two outs. Bruce singled up the middle and was joined by Paul who singled on an infield bloop. He sliced a ball just past the pitcher's mound that dropped over Detwiler's head as he tried to step back and catch it. Miller then flew out to end the inning. Detwiler is at 89 pitches (59 strikes).

3:20 p.m. -- Today just might not be the Nats' day. They got a leadoff single by Rendon, but once again made mistakes to squander the chance. Suzuki and a pinch-hitting Tyler Moore went down quickly before Denard Span came up to work a full count. Span hit a liner right to Paul in left field, but he missed the catch and dropped it. Rendon, however, hesitated on the base path and was thrown out at home by Paul. Still nothing going for the Nats as they trail 4-0 with Craig Stammen heading to the mound. Detwiler left with 5 IP, 11 H, BB, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 SO.

3:29 p.m. -- Stammen pitched a good inning despite dealing with a throwing error by Rendon to let Cozart on with two outs. Stammen did all he could do, but Rendon made his third error in his last six games. Sloppy game so far today by the Nats. Still 4-0 as we move to the bottom of the sixth.

3:38 p.m. -- Cingrani sets the Nats 1-2-3 with his 10th and 11th strikeouts of the game. He got both Harper and Werth looking after Span flew out to start the inning. The young lefty has 110 pitches through six and has thrown a gem. No one up in the Reds' bullpen yet either.

4:10 p.m. -- The Nats got on the board in the seventh and probably could have scored more. Desmond led off with a single and moved to second after Rendon walked. Kurt Suzuki then roped a double into the corner in left field. Desmond scored, but Rendon was held at third by Trent Jewett even though Paul dropped the ball and would have had little time to make a throw to home. Two ground outs later and the Nats are still down 4-1 with Henry out to pitch the top of the eighth.

4:26 p.m. -- Henry Rodriguez has been better lately, looking like he may have turned a corner. Today, however, Henry was at his worst throwing just four strikes on 17 pitches to walk the bases loaded. He was replaced by Ryan Mattheus who let the run in on a sac fly by Cozart. Now 5-1 Reds with Espinosa, Harper, and Werth up for the Nats.

4:47 p.m. -- The Nats get their second run of the game, but once again leave the inning blowing a chance for more. Harper got them started with a walk by Jonathan Broxton. He was then scored from first on a double by Desmond. Desmond popped it up to shallow right, but a sliding Choo couldn't make the grab. LaRoche then flew out to end the inning. 0-for-26 for ALR.

4:55 p.m. -- A 1-2-3 inning for Ryan Mattheus in the top of the ninth as the Nats will have Rendon, Suzuki, and probably Chad Tracy in to face Aroldis Chapman. Still 5-2 Reds.

5:05 p.m. -- That's the ballgame, folks. Aroldis Chapman shuts the Nats down as they fall 5-2 to the Reds.

I tell ya, the league leader in HPB vs. the guy most likely to hit a batter is must-see TV!

how does good Henry turn into bad Henry so quickly?

Insanity saved by Mattheus.

Could've been worse: the this game story.

Several WTF moments in this game but ##1 and 2 have to be Rendon going home on the two-out double and LaRoche standing like a house by the side of the road w/ two strikes. Very weak third outs by this team -- seriously. #3 would be Johnson leaving H. Rodriguez in long enough to walk the bases full; like he was conceding the game while the Nats were still (theoretically) in range.

I would add that a year DH'ing at Rice did nothing to increase Rendon's understanding, command of any of the other aspects of his game.

Holden Baroque said...

Theo, that's a good point.

EmDash said...

Base running and defense are the things that get me. Bad hitting games happen, off pitching days happen. But taking yourself out of the game shouldn't happen so much.

Joe Seamhead said...

My point put better by Theo.

Anyway, y'all need to keep in mind we took the series from a pretty good team. We played crappy today, but relax, we got this. You'll see.

Holden Baroque said...

Got to give the crowd some credit, though. Cool day, rainy, they're still working it.

EmDash said...

That's true, on balance it's been a good series. The frequent mental mistakes just give me pause.

I don't know that I've seen a pitcher work this slowly in quite a while. Man. This inning feels longer than Ross's first one.

Holden Baroque said...

Maybe they could have Harper room with Rendon on the road.

I can't stand to watch ALR bat again, so here's my comment beforehand:

There Stands LaRoche like a stonewall...this isn't the Battle of Manassas, Adam

I have been the biggest ALR supporter, and I think he needs to sit for a few games. If he isn't hurt, then he needs to clear his head.

Hurry back Ryan! the lineup needs you.

Secret wasian man said...

ALR must have some nasty pictures of Davey doing some NASTY things with some Nasty ,which keeps him in this lineup. WHAT A JOKE. You can not Justify this guy playing right now.

baseballswami said...

Here is my theory. The team is front loading every single dumb assed move into one month.

MicheleS said...

OH.. and is Danny have brain cramps at 2B lately, or is it just me? I didn't read the game thread for fear that he was being roasted.

baseballswami said...

Bryce is a highlight even in a horrible game. His baseball maturity is off the charts. It must be very odd for the veterans to see him playing in a more sophisticated way than they do.

MicheleS said...

SWM.. the reason ALR is playing right now is the glove. When you have 3 MI's that are either young or with the yips, you need to have a GG out there.

Left the game early, as the infield didn't bother to show up. Detwiler must feel persecuted. First his bullpen lets him down. Then the team doesn't hit for him. Then the infield falls apart. Good grief. Hey, anybody know if Rendon's mom is still in the area and became the official scorer? How he didn't get an error on that throw to first I'll never get.

That's OK, he made another horrible throw that was an error to make up for it. We have a sterling silver outfield and an infield made of swiss cheese.

Positives from the game:

1) Henry didn't knock himself unconscious with that pitchback pitch.
2) We can officially put Morse in the pleasant memory category. Anybody who doesn't believe that Span is not a huge upgrade for this team should go back to watching tennis.
2) Uhhh, well not much else. How about we won 3 of 4 at home for a 4-3 series win against the Reds.

Negatives
1) We will NEVER be playing in October with an infield that plays as badly as this one is right now.
2) Henry is still throwing for this team. NOTE i say throwing, not pitching.
3) Rendon, as much as some posters here would like to believe it, is clearly not ready.
And when they send him back down, put him in a city where there is a Target store so he can throw baseballs at their logo until he gets it right.

Disappointing and flat performance when they could have hit the road in good fashion.

Davey's strategy is to show faith in his starters to let them work themselves out of their slumps. That's what he's doing. I'd agree that it seems like it's gone on a little long now though.

Its time for a phantom injusy to ALR

Can you rephrase ? I'm lost in double negatives so is that a positive comment for Span

And here is my chant. April sucks. April sucks. It will be May in just a couple of days and the Nats' woes will magically disappear. One thing that will happen-- we will not hear that Zim should step aside for Rendon to play third. Espi still sucks but now Lombo seems to have caught his 0- fer disease. So much for that option.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The 0 for 26 s bad 13 Ks makes it worse.

Third Sunday in a row we made opponent look like Cy Young.

That last fact is really confusing to me.

MicheleS said...

EMDash... This is the first time I have called for ALR to sit. It's a little long for me. The only that gives me hope is Pittsburgh at the end of the week. He always hits there.

SWM.. Notice he got dropped down in the order. laying odds that when Ryan comes back, Ian will be behind him and not Adam.

speaking of Pittsburgh traveling and going to all 3 gams. 12th row behind home plate.

Jeffwx-sorry if I wasn't clear. Span is a definite positive for this team. I wasn't sold on his arm, but the rest of his game has been stellar.

Regarding the Fox announcers from yesterday, just who was calling the game? I got blacked out here in TN and Fox had Kenny Albert & McCarver doing the Braves at Tigers.

Love his glove????!!! He misses a lot of throws cuz he can't strectch worth sh#%^ -- every player hits that year at a certain age and it's done. aLR is done. Waiting for Espi "ceiling" is also dumb.

I just can't take DJ's decisions. We all know what needs to happen and he's too stubborn to do it. I can't wait till Davey is gone.

*frustrated*
