Maxwell back to Syracuse

SAN DIEGO -- The Nationals optioned outfielder Justin Maxwell to Class AAA Syracuse after tonight's 5-3 win over the Padres, an expected move needed to clear space for right-hander J.D. Martin, who will start tomorrow night.

Maxwell was called up from Syracuse on Sunday when Scott Olsen was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Because the Nats didn't need another starting pitcher until this weekend, they opted to add an extra bench player for the week.

Maxwell, who has already been optioned out three times this year (including once during spring training), got a chance to start both yesterday in San Francisco and tonight in San Diego. He went 0-for-7 with two walks in those games.

Martin, who was 2-1 with a 2.99 ERA at Syracuse, will officially be recalled tomorrow morning. He already flew to San Diego yesterday and was at the team hotel during tonight's game.

He'll be an improvement over Pete Orr for the Chiefs in center field. He'd be an improvement over Nyjer Morgan if he could just hit once every so often.

I hope JD shows them they made a BIG MISTAKE taking Mock north in April and leaving him in AAA.I am a big fan of the way this kid handles himself whenever he takes the mound.GO JD!

JMax, I was pulling for you hoping Opportunity #19 would show this team that you belonged and again you didn't step up.

What a set-up. The guy faced 2 lefties 2 games in a row and couldn't even find a hit. Can you imagine if Willingham or Zimmerman got to do the same thing and only had to face lefties?

I'm wondering how the Up-and-down several times a season affects the "options". Does "having options" refer to a certain absolute number of actual roster transfers from the MLB club to a minor league team, or does it refer to the number of YEARS a team can do this to a new-ish player?

James Bjork: "Remaining options" refers to how many years a player has left in which he can be sent up and down. The Nats can send Maxwell up and down as many times as they please this season. And based on the way things have been going, it looks like they may do just that.
