The Nats come to town having come THISCLOSE to a six-game winning streak at home, if not for Rafael Soriano's blown save yesterday evening. They face a much stiffer challenge this weekend, facing those powerhouse Braves, who have won 17 of their last 19 and opened up a commanding, 14 1/2-game lead in the NL East.
Speaking of Soriano, odds are he won't be available to pitch tonight after appearing in three straight games (and nearly suffering two straight blown saves). Tyler Clippard also has appeared the last three days, which could leave the recently recalled Drew Storen as Davey Johnson's closer tonight should the situation present itself.
First things first: The Nationals need a good start from Taylor Jordan, who could be making his final outing of the year before his team-imposed shutdown, and they need to score some runs off Atlanta rookie left-hander Alex Wood, before they can contemplate who is going to close tonight.

7:35 p.m. — And we're underway with a ball from Alex Wood to Denard Span. For what it's worth, Davey Johnson said earlier that Rafael Soriano and Tyler Clippard would be unavailable tonight only if they told him, and to that point neither had. So take it for what it's worth.
7:44 p.m. — Bryce Harper, who was booed resoundingly in his first plate appearance in Atlanta since the Julio Teheran dust-up, doubled into the left-field corner. But that's all the Nats were able to do against Wood in the top of the first.
7:54 p.m. — And the Braves jump on the Nats for an early run, thanks in large part to Wilson Ramos' throwing error on Jason Heyward's stolen base attempt. That allowed Heyward to advance to third with nobody out, and moments later Heyward scored on a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Freddie Freeman. Taylor Jordan did a nice job to limit the damage there, but the Nats trail 1-0 early.
8:07 p.m. — Boy, Fredi Gonzalez probably wishes he had a challenge flag right about now. Chris Johnson appeared to dive back into first base safely on Jordan Schafer's lineout to third, but umpire Marvin Hudson called him out. Sadly (for Fredi, that is) there won't be any challenge system in place until next season, so the Nats happily took the double play. Still 1-0 Braves after two.
8:17 p.m. — The Nats are having all kinds of trouble picking up the ball out of Wood's hand so far tonight. He's got a funky throwing motion that hides the ball well, and it's paying off for him. He's got four strikeouts through three scoreless innings.
8:35 p.m. — Jordan nearly induced his third double play in three innings, but Rendon's throw on the turn sailed wide and that allowed another run to score. So it's 2-0 Braves after three, though Jordan isn't really to blame for that.
8:45 p.m. — Ooh, intrigue in the top of the fourth as Wood's first pitch drills Harper in the back. Before you get all worked up, though, it was a 77 mph breaking ball. No intent there. Harper got his revenge, though, going first to third on Werth's single to left-center. That proved significant, because it allowed him to score on Desmond's 6-4-3 double play, cutting the Braves' lead to 2-1 in the middle of the fourth.
9:03 p.m. — Just a brutal sequence by the top of the Nats lineup in the top of the fifth. They had runners on second and third with one out and the Braves infield playing back. But Span struck out on three pitches, failing to even put the ball in play. He has struck out three times now tonight. And then Zimmerman grounded out to second to end the inning. That leaves the Nats 0-for-6 tonight with runners in scoring position, three of those outs on K's and another on a double play. That's your season in a nutshell, folks. Still 2-1 Braves in the middle of the fifth.
9:10 p.m. — Three errors on the Nats infield in five innings. The most recent one was a tough hop for LaRoche, but it's an E nonetheless. Props to Jordan for escaping major damage. It remains 2-1 after five.
9:28 p.m. — All in all, a solid outing for Taylor Jordan, who is probably done after six innings of two-run ball. Neither run was earned. He's at 142 total innings for the season, so this could be it for him in 2013. Ross Ohlendorf tossed four innings in a rehab start at Potomac tonight and should be ready to come off the DL in five days.
9:37 p.m. — Nothing happening for the Nats at the plate tonight. Wood finishes his outing with nine strikeouts and zero walks. He's the fifth pitcher to put up that line against the Nats this joining, joining Cliff Lee, Matt Harvey, Roy Oswalt and Clayton Kershaw. So, yeah, three of the guys to do that are named Lee, Harvey and Oswalt. Too bad Ian Kennedy didn't do it, too. Still 2-1 at the stretch.
9:58 p.m. — Wow, some fireworks in the top of the eighth as Luis Avilan fires a first-pitch fastball into Bryce Harper's upper back. Harper was not pleased, neither was Davey Johnson. Plate umpire Marty Foster issued warnings to both benches, and Avilan departed to a standing ovation from the crowd. So how did the Nats respond: Werth delivered a two-out RBI single to right, tying this game 2-2 in the eighth.
10:07 p.m. — Nice job by Craig Stammen with two scoreless innings. We go to the ninth, it's still 2-2 and Craig Kimbrel enters to face LaRoche, Ramos and a pinch-hitter.
10:15 p.m. — The Nats got two hits off Kimbrel in the top of the ninth, but they couldn't get the go-ahead run home. So now here's Drew Storen in his return to the big leagues, pitching the bottom of the ninth of a tie game in Atlanta.
10:30 p.m. — Wow, quite a performance by Storen. He allowed a one-out single to Simmons but came up huge to strike out Evan Gattis (who had been 6-for-8 with four homers as a pinch-hitter!) on a nasty slider. Storen then got Gerald Laird to fly out, ending a 17-pitch, 13-strike inning and sending this one to extra innings, still tied 2-2.
10:40 p.m. — Harper (who nearly was hit by another pitch just now) showed some nice discipline in laying off a 3-2 slider from Scott Downs to draw a one-out walk in the 10th. Unfortunately, Werth grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Bottom of the 10th upcoming, with Ian Krol now in.
10:47 p.m. — And Justin Upton takes Krol deep to end this one. Nats lose 3-2 in 10.

Game 121: Nats at Phillies
If only we could be that lucky. I hear the Phillies are in turmoil these days.
Well we won 5/6 against two bad teams. We did what we needed to do (although 6/6 should've been done). Now we see whether we're really playing better or not because this is a good team.
i hope if a save opportunity arises Davey goes with somebody other than SORRY OH NO. Also upset with Desmond for not adjusting to the situation. Werth on second with 0 outs. Desmond watches strike 3. That ball has to be put in play to move the runner. 2 swings for the fences and then bat on the shoulder. Why???
We left a lot of runners on base in that last game with the G-ants. Wad we have the bases loaded 2X and little to no scoring?
The Buffalo probably could have helped us!

I get the feeling that a lot of people think hitting is a lot easier than it actually is. You don't get five seconds to decide what you think of a pitch.
Doc, the problem is that Haren came up with the bases loaded not once but twice. He left 6 on base by himself. To Bochy's credit, he was IBBing half of our team to get to Haren it seemed like and it worked.
2 strikes you have to protect. Ian backward Ks much too often.

Two bad that the Buffalo wasn't hitting ahead of him, and maybe they wouldn't have been so loaded.
Bryce does strike out looking. So does Werth. But even then, they're not Ian. they don't approahc hitting the same way, because they're good at different things.
You're right, secret wasian man. Desmond's approach at the plate is no good at all. That's why he's such a terrible hitter. He should start tinkering with it. Only good things can happen.
To answer your question: yes, Werth and Harper strike out looking too. It's part of the game. If guys never struck out looking they'd also never walk, and they'd strike out swinging all the time. It's part of the game. As is the fact that there aren't a thousand Joey Vottos and Miguel Cabreras out there, so you should stop expecting the Nats to field 8 of them every night.

I don't think we need someone who is 70 and I highly doubt he ends up here. But Werth obviously has a ton of respect for him.

Ghost, Charlie was the first manager to give Werth a real shot as an everyday player. Of course Werth is going to feel extremely loyal to him. Without Cholly, he doesn't get 7 years/ 126 mil.
Cholly? No way. He is not the same guy he was when Werth had him. Phils are moving on with Ryne Sandberg. Time for us to move on also. The Barves did NOT dominate us- two one run games and a tie late in the third. I am so tired of everyone handing this thing to them on a silver platter. Time for someone to slow their roll. Taylor Jordan has been not-great his last couple of starts. And that was against the Brewers and Phillies. I'm a little concerned about how he fares against the Braves. Particularly given that our bullpen is likely to have to eat innings and both Clip and Soriano are probably unavailable.

David, I was making a provocative tongue in cheek comment. Again, probably not something you say out loud with the definitive part of it even though I believe Werth feels that way for the exact reasons you mentioned.
As much as I want the Nats to play well, win, make a run and all that good stuff-- much more I want them to learn, toughen up, correct problems, grow up, and get in a place where they are relevant for many years to come. I will tolerate this, choke it down and pay some more fan dues if it looks like it's going to lead things in the right direction.
DP, Taylor is showing the 1st year of pitching effects from TJ surgery. Loosing location on his FB, and his breaking stuff is not as sharp as it was.
He hasn't had as much control over his change either, as he had a few starts back. He'll be back next spring, looking for a spot.
The kid has done well, but time to shut him down.
DP -- both Roark and Stammen are pretty fresh.
Also, I think Taylor's start tonight coincides with what is supposed to be Olly's last rehab start, so I guess the thinking is that he comes up while TJ leaves, which I'm sure everyone who's paying more attention already knew....
Yeah, big Ohly is pitching at the Pfitz tonight. He will look like their Grandpa. If all goes well he takes over. Taylor has been a bright spot.
I'll bet Roark gets a few innings of work tonight. Storen will get an inning, and we can only hope that it's a save opportunity. Maybe Krol gets that chance if Freeman and McCann are due up.

I think they will pull Taylor at the first sign of trouble and use Stammen and Roark-- Krol if the match ups are there. Would love to see Druuuuu but wish they had let him get his feet wet at home against the Giants instead of away versus the Barves.
Don't know how many of the road trip games I'll see, as our houseguests are arriving tonight and staying until Wednesday. I'll be doing the hostessing, tour guide thing more than the avid Nats fan thing (they're not really into baseball).
In other news, did anybody else get an email about the September 1 game's time being changed from 1:35 to 8 PM because ESPN picked it up? We have tix and I can't wait to break that news to my husband. Oh well, at least the next day is a holiday.

YIKES! I didn't get that email about the Sept 1 game going from 1 to 8. That sort of wrecks our "baseball weekend" because we were going to stay in Old Town and take the baseball boat back and forth Saturday and Sunday. Might need to rethink the whole thing. Darn.

Yikes. Anyone else watching pre- game?? Soriano's numbers are pretty shaky.
As I've said, Soriano's issue is his slider. He CAN strike people out, but it's entirely based on the command of his slider. He hasn't been able to consistently command it all year and that's a problem. Because without the slider, all he has is one pitch: a low-90s fastball. Big league hitters will hit that.
But hitters are batting 290 against him?? How in the world has he managed 30 saves?? Sick of all this Philly melancholy- he didn't die. Knowledgeable fans in Pa have known for a long time that he is not good with younger players. That team has declined every year for five years. That's how it works. Jayson is remembering a better time and place.
DP, it's not his slider, it's the location, its been awful, regardless of what pitch he throws...if its over the plate at 90, it's going to be hit if the location is poor but I do agree that he can't even throw his slider in the dirt anymore.
ESPN must be banking on a Strasburg vs Harvey game that Sunday.
Will be interesting to see how instant replay affects the time of a game next year but am glad they are doing it, way over-due. Johnny & Ray are talking about the issue right now.
According to B-R, hitters are batting .254 against Soriano. Maybe they switched his numbers with Storen's. Hitters are batting .297 against him this year.
Pre game said .255 against him career, 290 this season. Very high. Also ranks low in every category in the NL.
And feel? Wouldn't it be hilarious if Harvey was shut down by then and they got Big Ohly vs some unknown Met call up?
I didn't see the pregame, but if it said hitters are batting .290 against him this season, it was wrong. His career average against is .205. You can look it up.

Baseball needs a method to apportion errors. I would have given both Rendon and LaRoche .5 of an error on that play.
WODL, looked like the runner took the inside lane to first and took ALR out of the play but tough to tell...Rendon had more time than he thought and just made a poor throw...good throw and we are out of the inning.

Yeah, not the greatest throw but I often notice on plays like that that both players seem to screw it up. The same thing happens on those throws from Ramos to center that we see so often.
You got to get your guy on 3rd with no outs to make the GDP your friend. The Nats have perfected the art, except for that Cleveland series when they couldn't even hit into GDP's. That is basically rock bottom.
Now me, with my Jim Gentile first baseman's mitt, I would have come off first and saved the run, but that is just me. I am risk averse.

Bad situational hitting, atrocious fielding, good starting pitching, and a loss to a so-so starting pitcher.
Our pitchers, catchers and relievers should watch these Braves guys and learn.

NJ, agree, bring up Tyler Moore and maybe even some others, our problem is offense, you can't let this continue, try something else...even Harper vs. lefties is a problem...we need a manager that's not afraid to change line-ups given the match-ups on a game by game basis.

Almost every game against the Barves it's one run. Three errors. One hit, one play made here and there. This almost frustrates me more than getting blown out. Why is Tyler Moore not here??? Not like anyone in the bench is doing anything that can't be replaced.
Actually, the Braves have outscored us 52-26 this year, but there have been a few winnable ones where we blew it.
Part 2-- Tyler Moore can play first and surely provide some more offense than we are seeing .
