Pitching for Milwaukee is rookie right-hander Donovan Hand (0-2, 3.56) who is still searching for his first major league win. The 27-year-old has pitched in 17 games this season, including five starts. This will be his third consecutive start after joining the rotation full-time on July 23.
Hand faced the Nationals earlier this season on July 4 and went five innings with six hits, three walks, and three earned runs. Washington ended up winning that game 8-5.
Davey Johnson has Denard Span back at the top of the order batting leadoff, with Bryce Harper hitting second against Hand. Wilson Ramos gets the start for the second straight day after posting two hits and a run in Friday's win.
Enjoy the game...

And while you wait-- John Lannan versus the Braves on three days rest. He has beat the Braves more than any other pitcher- huh?? Whaaaat?

And he plunks Freeman. All the more reason to root for him.
Rizzo just got promoted and he wants Span back there but he doesn't belong at lead-off.
Read the previous thread's comments about RZim. I think the comments about, well, his comments were pretty harsh. You have to realize that what these guys say to the media isn't always what they mean. For instance, RZim being "satisfied" with winning 1/2 in the playoffs on the road. I doubt he went into that series saying "I'll be happy with 1/2!" But after they lost one, he realized splitting the series on the road and getting home wasn't the worst thing ever. Which was true.
I also didn't find his comments about Harper's shirt wrong. Everybody responds to different things. He was saying he doesn't respond to pep talks, he goes out there and does what he's supposed to do (or tries to) because it's his job. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm the same way to be honest, I hate when we have those silly meetings at work.
That's just my take on it.
Since the All-Star Break, Bryce Harper is hitting .340/.377/.600 with a .977 OPS. 2 doubles, a triple, 3 homers.
Go Johnny L!
Some entrepreneur needs to step to the plate and make up a mess of those Harper t-shirts.
I get Ryan's comments, I really do. Not every team is the type to do Maddon's dress up days. But I find our guys to be particularly too cool for school. Remember how Pence fired up the Giants last year?. Just saying that this ulta- sophisticated routine isn't exactly resulting in a professional result. It's a game. Maybe there should be more energy and testosterone than in a law firm.
Some entrepreneur needs to step to the plate and make up a mess of those Harper t-shirts.
Might as well ... they've made a mess of everything else.
Badaboom.
"Screw up your courage, MacBeth; you've screwed up everything else."
Maybe there should be more energy and testosterone than in a law firm.
You apparently have not spent much time around some law firms I could name, Swami. Just saying.
I think every locker-room has a mix of guys. There are guys like Ryan and guys like Harper. They help balance each other out. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
Justin Maxwell already making his impact with his new team. GW pinch-hit HR in the 12th inning.
Royals needed a pinch-hitter and a RH outfielder and got JMax and the Nats needed a pinch-hitter and RH outfielder and got Scott Hairston.
We all know JMax and Hairston can't hit RHPs well but JMax is killing LHPs this year:
.311/.367/.489/.856
and
Hairston
.174/.233/.446/.679
Why did you make that choice Mike?
Sofa-- maybe accountants?? By the way-- Tommy Milone got sent down to the minors. Ouch.
Swami, how good is the Gio trade looking now?
JMax. Been there, done that, bought the T shirt. And it wasn't one of Harper's.
David-- so good.
I look at it as a choice between JMax and Tyler Moore or switch hitter Zach Walters. Why would you choose JMax?
David - I mentioned that in about the 360th post from yesterday.
We have Gio and he is locked up for several more years. The genius Billy Bean has a 2nd string catcher, a AAA starter and the other pitcher is now with the Astro's and struggling as well. Oh yeah, we got the other stud prospect pitcher back as well.
Rizzo needs to step his game up!
JMax gives you + defense and outstanding LHP splits which neither of the others have as an outfielder.
Peric - I agree with you but if your choice was Justin or Hairston which would you chose? I also think Moore should be back soon.
John Lannan just gave up the lead
I don't have a good feeling about tonight. The Brewers can hit home runs and Haren loves to give them up. I thought his last start was very lucky. A lot of balls that were JUST foul and had distance.
Don't assume accountants lack testosterone (or estrogen) or energy. One visit to an "opinion consistency meeting" would definitely change your mind on that (but, I will say, no t-shirts are distributed).
Now, back to baseball.

Something of an update on Ross Detwiler: While it is still possible he pitches in games this season, Davey seems to think it is unlikely.
Adam Kilgore @AdamKilgoreWP 3s
Davey says it'll be a while before Ross Detwiler comes back, possibly very late in September. He needs a full throwing program after rest.
Well this sucks.
Lannan pulled in the 5th.
David, that sounds bad but it seems Ross needs rest and you hope he can make a full recovery.
Lannan on three days rest versus the Braves lineup. Interesting managerial decision. That all the Phillies can muster up these days?
The Phillies have won 1 out of their last 12. Talk about freefalling...
The Phillies have Ruf playing LF. He takes a poor route to a soft fly and it becomes a leadoff single. After a Sac Bunt and stealing 3rd and an error by the Phillies 3rd baseman the wheels come off the bus.
Braves 4 - Phillies 3
Question about pitching coverage-- with Det unlikely to pitch in August, does Taylor Jordan have enough innings left to at least make it until Sept call up time?
The Phillies look like a split-squad team playing like they have to catch a flight.
baseballswami, I think TJord is done after 3 to 4 more starts so I don't believe he will make it to September 1st.
Have to think Ohlie takes his spot until callups.
Ghost - agreed. But look at the team they are fielding and then look at our roster. There is no way we should be closer to them than the Braves. No way.
The Braves got hot at the right time. We were still very much in the NL East race coming out of the ASB. But we lost 6 in a row and the Braves have just been on fire so that pretty much put an end to that. 6.5 back of the Wildcard.
baseballswami, yah, I agree and how unbelievable that Amaro couldn't trade any of his aging Vets for some young prospects.
My Philly relatives are just furious that Amaro is not working on rebuilding right now.
I somewhat understand not trading someone like Chase Utley. But why in the world wouldn't you get rid of a guy like Michael Young, who isn't even that good to begin with?
David, the Nats were in it on July 7th at only 4 games back with the easy part of their schedule to finish out before the All Star break.
David, rumor was that Young wouldn't agree to a trade as he had full no-trade protection.
Giving Michael Young full no-trade protection to begin with was an awful decision.
Way to go Ian Desmond sticking up for Bryce Harper! Even more respect for Desi!
Julie Alexandria says in the pre-game that almost all the players were wearing Bryce's t-shirts for this game.
My Phillie fan daughter and S - I -L are steamed that Amaro didn't trade Young, Ruiz and Cliff. I reminded them that it takes two to tango and maybe Amaro's asking price was too high. In any event they would like to see the Phil's go younger even if it takes a few years. Papelbon now with 9 blown saves on the year to boot. Ugh!
Tim, I hate the Phillies and agree with your daughter & her H. I think they still have a chance to move Cliff Lee on a waiver claim so it's not over yet.
Spent a week up there recently- very surprised at how ready the fans are now to move players and get younger. They get it now. Radio call in shows up there are quite entertaining.
baseballswami, they should be smelling last place next year unless they get lucky in Free Agency. Their farm system has a lot of near misses and nobody knows if Hamels can come back strong or what the status of Halladay will be. 1 more year of wear on JRoll, Utley, and Ryan Howard and Michael Young and Chooch is 5/8ths of your starting position players on major age regression.
Extras in Phooledephia.
He's not right handed but I'd like to see Corey Brown and his XBH bat than JMax which seems to be keeping up with Walters given he has 100 less at bats. Seems like he might be a better choice than Bernadina and no let it not be said: Denard Span. Plus they got a Perez and a Kobernus both right-handed, hitting well and capable of playing all three outfield positions ...
Kind of sad when the Syracuse offense looks that much better than the Nat's offense ... can't recall it ever being like that since they became the Nats.
Sure Peric, we will see all those guys the 1st week of September except for maybe Walters.
I'd give Brown a shot. Not because I think he'll be particularly good, but because he can't possible be worse. And although he struggled at times last year, I thought he did much better toward the end of his stint. I know he had a walk-off.
David, I can't imagine he'd be worse than Tracy and Brown is decent with the glove, speed, and arm. We saw some glimpses last year, just not consistency which is the definition of the 2013 bench.
Somebody is actually promoting Syracuse as a place where the Nats can get some help?
Except for Espinosa and Moore, any help from the minor league system is going to come from AA or below.
Span is now batting .202 (17-84) leading off games this year.
Gulp
Ominous start to the game...
And I agree, we saw enough of JMax to last a long time
I don't think I would want JMax back either but there were better players available than Scott Hairston. He's now the RH version of Chad Tracy and Rizzo is on the hook for a big contract for 2014.
Time for LaRoche to step up.
it is @2.5 MM, I don't think it is much.
Free Tyjer Moore. Let ALR be the lefty bat off the bench. The man is physically emancipated and worn down. At this point, what do the Nats stand to lose? They told the kid to regain his stroke and he would be back. Well?
Span is hitting .202 @ leadoff, but he has also gotten 10 hits in his last 19 at bats.
ALR steps up big time, runner advances in scoring position. Oh yeah!
Faraz Shaikh said...

Do you realize that's more collectively than the other 3 IF/OF players on the bench (Tracy, Bernadina, Lombo). That's a ton for a glorified pinch-hitting specialist like Tracy.
33 walks for Desi. Number going up.

Luckily Werth was in motion or its a 4-6-3.

What's your point? He got those hits in the 7 hole. Davey moves him back to leadoff. Not sure I disagree as well as he was doing in the 7 hole.
Werth in by an eyelash! WOW!
Rendon and Werth hood combo
come on GoSM, I am sure ALR would have beaten Segura's throw by a mile.
WOW was he really safe there? anyways, nats score on rendon's sac fly which is credit to werth actually not rendon as far as I am concerned.
What a FANTASTIC slide by Werth.
Thank you Jayson. Baseball at its best!
Not bad for a guy who it was said by some that his legs are too old.
Ramos got that. FP was totally right when he said if the roof is closed, that's a home run. No doubt.
Great slide by Werth
David, you're not kidding. That ball died out there. That hurts. 2 run jack off the board.
How wedding go Manassas?
Haren doing a lot of nibbling and not seeing his split finger. He threw Davis all cutter and 4-seamers.
Haren is not throwing strikes and certainly not quality strikes.
That was a good job controlling the running game by Haren during that AB.
Ghost, my point is that Span has hit better for the past month. BTW, he led off Weds, in Detroit, went 2-3 with a walk. So, no, not all of those 10 hits were from him hitting in the 7 hole. Since July 1st Span has gone 30-101 with 9 BB's.
This Phoolie game is frustrating. After an intentional walk the pitcher throws 4 straight balls to Paul Janish who was taking his 1st AB of the season. Bases loaded 1 out.
Haren not throwing many strikes at all. 2/3 of his strikes end up in the seats......so....9 more outs and then immediately go to pen
Watching Haren run the bases is...something.
Harper got a pitch there and he knew it.
Joe, I'm just saying I like him in the 7 hole where he looks more comfortable. He got his season back on track and 2 not-so-good ABs so far.
Game of inches......
Wow, Zim JUUUUUUUUUUST missed it.
Close the freaking roof already
Ghost, I'm with you on Span. He's been so much more productive in the 7 hole.
Why must Haren go to 3-2 on every hitter?
That was a good inning for Haren.
Braves win 5-4. Seems like a broken record....
My god, Werth!
Who here doesn't love Jayson Werth?
When you aren't going well, Hand misses his spot and LaRoche hits a can of corn to left. 1 pitch, 1 out.
NatsJack, we know a few don't but they all went hiding.
Jack and Ghost, I agree that Span has been better in the 7 hole than he was at lead off in the last two weeks of May and all of June. But he was brought here to be a lead off batter and I believe that the Nats have not given up on that idea. I said a few weeks ago that if it was my choice Werth would lead off against LH and Span would lead off against RH pitching, for now. I also think that Anthony Rendon's slump is playing a part in this line up change right now.
And the team leader,Ian Desmond, grounds into his patented double play.
Carlos Gomez is a very very good player, but he could learn some plate discipline.
Joe, I agree that Span SHOULD be the lead off hitter, but right now,the team needs to stick with what works.
Joe, you can just see it in leadoff. Back to swinging light and taking fastballs on the plate. It's like 2 different guys. Do you force something that is now not comfortable?
It seems that has been a problem for Davey all season not getting this lineup set and the right matchups.
Haren suddenly can't throw strikes anymore.
Nevermind
David, Don't you just love it?
About time one of them went over!
Ramos! Take that haters!
Buffalo
Rendon continuing to hit the ball on the nose and can't find a hole.
Tatanka, on the other hand, finds a field of holes over the fence!
Hit the pitcher after the HR? WTF?
Ramos has a tendency to pimp his home runs. I was waiting for somebody to get hit because of it.
What kind of pitch was that?
Big Cat the wedding went great. Highlight when the Dj played Take me out to tge ball game about 2/3 the way through the reception.
Hope that ball didn't hit Haren's pitching shoulder...
Buffalo needs to lose a few pounds, but love the power!
Well it didn't look like he pimped it that time, much. But he definitely does do it. Hmm.
time for Span and Laroche to bat 7-8. Ramos bats 4th. As much as Werth gets on base having ALR batting next is criminal.
Ramos didn't pimp that one. On another note, Brandon Miller hit his first high A home run at Potomac tonight.
Ramos!!
Jack? What works? I don't think the record of the team with Span hitting 7th is any better than when he was leading off. Honestly, nothing has been working, one way, or the other.
Ramos did pimp it. Thats bush league. especially since it barely got over.
I have to agree with Seamhead. I think the idea of Werth at lead off vs the lefties and Span against the RH's makes a lot of sense. Maybe too much sense for this season.
Can we say once again "By Ryan Zimmerman". Harper saves the day.
Yuniesky Betancourt trying to run on Harper.
Great rope from Harper there!
Someone told ARen to keep the ball down... Whata throw by Harper!
Harp my boy The Gunslinger
Bryce never stands and looks. if that's off the top of the wall Bryce is at 3rd. Wilson could be out at second.
Secret,
I didn't see any pimping going on there.
Love that kid.
Note to Ryan Zimmerman. That is what a team leader does.
not bad on the pimpimg. But I like a guy who runs hard no matter what.
SWM, agree Span should be 7 but ALR needs to sit, dude just plain stinks at the plate...heard Charlie & Dave say he is 1 for his last 28 if I heard it correctly, that's not bad, its F-n horrible!!!
Secret wasian man said...

What are you talking about? Did you see a different replay then the rest of us or are you making it up as you go along? He always salutes Dios at homeplate after a HR.
Harper's arm remind me of Big Cat's arm as a 20 year old.
agree paul he is wasting Werths efforts. ian not great either.
Ramos normally does pimp. He stands and watches. But I don't think he did that time for some reason. Maybe because of the one earlier that he thought he got but didn't.
Pitiful Zim
Well what about that? Opposite field ADAM BOMB!
Paul Brandt, that HR was for you!
Take that Ghost!!
Good for Adam! Man, I know he needed that...
Boy did he need that!
Yep, that was Bryce's stick. Funny.
Harper's bat has magic power!
Whoaa!Where did that come from?
did Ramos run hard after he hit the ball? I don't think so. that's all. SO PAUL I GUESS THATS WHY WE ARE JUST FANS HAHAHAHA LAROCHE
Remember what you did ALR to repeat what your doing.
Ifvit was Harper's bat remember.
Very few run hard. Most run aboit the same speed.
BigCat said...
Take that Ghost!
Take what? I haven't said much about his hitting other than facts. Just letting it play out but Charlie and Dave have been discussing it.
I'm a homer. Thrilled. He was due!
Ghost. Ignore SWM. He makes stuff up and lives in his own world.
Oh lord... Please don't let J Werth be hurt...
I hope Werth is okay and this is just precautionary.
sausage race is great. get rid of TAFT
Oh boy. Werth. Hottest batter in baseball. Say it ain't so.
Please don't let Werth be hurt!!!!!
Ghost, thanks, how funny, why does it always seem to happen that way??...off to buy a powerball ticket.
Living in my own world is better than living in your single wide trailer with you Nats jack.
That Werth stayed into the game to bat is probably a good sign. He can take forever to get to balls in the outfield as long as he can keep hitting.
I'm hoping.
what happened to Werth? missed it.
We need to have yhe prez's race for real and cutthe theater.
I was just going to beat up on ALR! So happy for him! Anyway, In the last 28 games Ian Desmond has 5, count 'em, 5 RBI's and ALR has 10 RBI's. Those totals are glaring as to being a huge part of what's wrong with this offense.(Give Adam 1 more now!).
So do you put Haren back out there for the 7th?
DP, yes re. Haren.
Did you see Rendon',s catch? Werth held up on that fly, slightest of a limp.
Believe this is all precautionary.
Rendon has become a ground out machine
J Zimmermann with 6 shutout innings last night, Haren with 6 so far tonight, man I am loving some starting pitching right now. Lets finish this one off tonight and get Taylor Jordan to throw a strong start of his own tomorrow.
Has anyone ever been to Winter Park, Florida? Especially, within 2 blocks of Park Avenue?
Hey, Manassas Nats Fan! Congrats on your daughter's wedding today!
Haren getting through the 7th is HUGE!
ok, I like Ramos but is it that hard to run out a ground ball like Harper used to do and even Ohlendorf did last week?
NJ,
I admit I have not been to Winter Park, FL. Should I put it on my bucket list or just add it to a future spring training itinerary?
I do NOT want Ramos pulling a groin muscle, especially his own. Routine grounder, not worth having Zuki finish the season.
I'm sour on Haren...but I have to give him props for his performances lately....
I wish this was the Haren that had been around since the beginning of the year...
He is a humble guy, always knows what to say, doesn't blame others for when he messes up....
If this is the guy that we should expect - I wonder will be he a Nat again next year...
Winter Park, no. I have family in Melbourne. What do you need to know?
94 pitches for Haren to this point, and he's still looking good!
Paul,
Given Ramos history with hamstring issues this year I'm okay if he doesn't run out routine ground balls the rest of the season.
What a pitch to Cargo on the K... Totally had him looking...
Ryan just mouthed "f**k me" after nearly throwing that ball away.
Hold your breath. LaRoche saves another E-5.
Come on Ryan...
Thanks Joe.
Played mostly country music, but playrd Hailed to redskins and a few other walk up Nats tune.
Another ball by Ryan Zimmerman that he has to get. His UZR will take a beating tonight again.
sofa, i knew i would hear the groin muscle excuse and its valid but too many of our guys not hustling down the line, just don't like it.
Congrats MNF!
That was a hit, eh?
Okayyyyy...
What a night by D Haren.... *mighty claps*
Haren picks himself up. Way to finish that off Dan! Great outing. Stay consistent my friend!
2 poor plays by Zimm in this inning. No damage, though.Great job by Dan Haren.
It was a tough play. A play Ryan should make, but a tough play still. I understand giving it a hit.
I feel you, pb, but this is one I would give him. Like Livo not busting down the line on every ground ball...it's really not his job.
In the 5 games since coming off the DL 1 mediocre start, 2 very good starts, and 2 excellent starts.
You notice how they
I'll tell ya -- inept or corrupt official scorers have saved Iron glove Zim 5 errors at least this year -- probably more.
Uh Davey, leave Haren in. He's going great
Manassas ditto on the congrats
When it is in the hole he runs harder. Straight at fielder more relaxed.
With his hamstring problem I have no problem.
Harper poised to go deep
Good job by her. Wedding at 2. Nats at 7
