Pitching for Milwaukee is rookie right-hander Donovan Hand (0-2, 3.56) who is still searching for his first major league win. The 27-year-old has pitched in 17 games this season, including five starts. This will be his third consecutive start after joining the rotation full-time on July 23.
Hand faced the Nationals earlier this season on July 4 and went five innings with six hits, three walks, and three earned runs. Washington ended up winning that game 8-5.
Davey Johnson has Denard Span back at the top of the order batting leadoff, with Bryce Harper hitting second against Hand. Wilson Ramos gets the start for the second straight day after posting two hits and a run in Friday's win.
Enjoy the game...

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 303 of 303 Newer› Newest»David, look at the play at 2nd on Weeks from Bryce in the 9th last night that was ruled an E-4. That was an E-5 hit right at Ryan. Don't see much difference in the degree of difficulty.
Just another poor performance by Ryan in the field. 2 by him that he should've had both and the one he does glove he airmails to 1st.
haha maybe I was poised to cheer the harper homer ...
OK, I went back and looked at the hit past Zim again, stop-motion--the ball *was* smoked. Would have been a tough error. It's a reflex play. I guess we remember the instances where he had better reflexes.
That play on Weeks should not have been an error either, imo. Charlie and Dave agreed. They were both wondering why that was called an error, the ball was hit extremely hard. Sometimes you see it called, sometimes you don't. No consistency.
Thank you.
She and her hubby go Nashville games regularky. AAA team for the Brewers
Tough play on that last one to Zim?? routine for any major league 3rd baseman. E-5
David, that's what I'm saying. Some consistency with the Official Scorer is needed. I'd say Harper's ball was more of a hit.
Good play Aoki, bad camera work in the MASN truck.
Now watch this, one of us will win that hitting lesson with Ryan.
sofa, fair enough but keep an eye on it, not just Ramos...heck, FP is still talking about Ohlendorf hustling down the line, it's the right way to play and it motivates your team-mates...should not be hard for a pro athlete to sprint 90 feet 4 x/game but I get your point...also sets a bad example for the kids, maybe that's my bigger issue.
If anything the Harper ball was hit harder.
Weird -- MASN replays everything -- several times -- but not that last error by Zim. They just kinda skipped over it.
Sorry guys. You can't cover up what we can see.
pb, I've been watching the games, too. I notice it plenty, for some time now. I just don't b. about it in here.
not that I'm saying you shouldn't...
Haren's ERA is down to 5.14. It's kinda sad we're saying he's DOWN to 5.14. But hey, it's something.
Come on clip. No walks. Another curly gives us 2 in a row.
Oh, I'd take a hitting lesson from Zim any day -- only don't ask me to take any fielding lessons.
NFSS, if you have a DVR you can go back anyway. I find it useful and instructive.
I think I would have let Haren go out 1 more...
I told my son in law he should be an ump.
He said "I am legally blind."
I said at least you would have an excuse for some bad calls.
I have seen it discussed here about where R Zimm is positioning hinself in the field..
In the bottomof the 7th did his positioning allow a ball to get past him? Didn"t I see Jeff Bianchi play 2 steps further back and was he able to get to a ball that if he played in as far as Zimm does would have gotten past him? Considering his UZR, when does Davey start considering taking Ryan out for a late inng. defensive replacement?

You either change Bryce's last night to a hit or make that one an E-5.
Luckily no damage as Haren finished his night on the next batter and the earlier one got Harper to show off his rocket arm to gun out the runner at 2nd base.
I just re watched the Zimm miss. Would you expect him to make the play? Yes, probably. Was it an error? Not in my opinion. Weeks shouldn't have been charged with one last night either, in my opinion.
Oh my goodness, Aoki has had the two funniest swings of the year.
Clip with a great inning! Quick work. Have to like that!
Going back to the Harper tee shirts and Zim's quotes for a minute ... I wonder if coming up through all those formative years with lousy teams, and lousy teammates in some cases, have affected how Ryan approaches these things. He may be a seasoned pro in baseball terms, but he was a young man for most of that time. Of course, those of us with significant memories of the Johnson Administration would still consider him young.
Helluva 8th inning by Clip...
Super quick Clip.
Easily MVP for the season.
Joe, on the errors or hits. Just some consistency. I definitely expect Bryce's will be changed but I also consider it more of the "Bryce Bias" I keep alluding to that even the official scorer sticks it to him.
What would be *really* funny is if Bernadina won the hitting lessons from Zimmerman.
MNF,
Congrats on your daughter's wedding. Proudest day of my life when my daughter got married almost 7 years ago. And if I understand they live in Nashville? Great city, great place to visit. Here's to Tootsie's!
That was ball 4
I'm glad they gave Dan Haren a couple of runs to work with, but 5 lousy hits still sucks.
Well outside. I don't even fault Bernadina for that AB. What's he supposed to do?
the HP umpires this year throughout the league have been terrible. perfect example with the shark.
I hope Desi goes back to getting hits when there's guys on base. He has been awful in that respect for over a month.
Haren threw 70 strikes of 102 pitches and against righties tonight I said he was nibbling the outside early in the game. That seems to be a change for him using his cutter and he didn't test fate in a hitter's ballpark. No HRs tonight and very little elevated pitches hit hard.
All in all I like what I saw except for some of those long counts. He was channeling his inner Gio.
That third strike to Shark was not over the plate, but it is frequently called a strike, and he must know that.
Rendon finally finds open space. He has been so unlucky.
See, how BS is that ball called for a strike now
Tucked up here, boss...
Married in Manassas living in Nashville
Bernadina's pitches were all outside. Ump was to consistent.
Somewhat off topic but have any of you been to Miller Park for a ball game? Any comments pro or con? I'm looking at possible road trips in the next year or two and would like some ideas from fellow NI's.
Thanks.
I wanted to complain, but ump wss so off thrre.
Miller Park seems like a great place to me. I've never been, but it'd be a place I'm interested in going.
1-3 with the sac fly is Anthony's best results at the plate in a while.
Well, which Rafael Soriano do we get tonight?
The "lefty strike" isn't necessarily a new thing. The article I linked to only treats data from 2007-2012, but the idea goes back a ways. I don't know whether anybody has real data going way back, but the idea has been around, FWIW.
I watch many games and very few games where I feel a home plate ump is worth much.
Nats benefit occasionally, the opponents sometimes does.
K-ville, I've never been to Miller Park, but everyone I know who has says good things about it.
Looks like Ryan was pretending that was a rush job, and subbed it. Good idea.
UnTucked!
Another 1-2-3 inning for untuck.
Untuck. Love the no drama 9th!
Gwai fung, peeps. Go get 'em tomorrow.
3rd out, shirt out!
These last two games have been very well played games. I don't know if I'd say they're the best played games all year like FP said, but they've been crisp. Great pitching, just enough offense, solid fundamentals. More of this please.
Okay Taylor Jordan, tomorrow is your day. Give us a quality start and let's sweep the Brew Crew!
way to go Haren! we need to run off like 15 in a row to get back in this.
MNF, congrats to you, your daughter, family and new family and nice job getting home to see the win...good day for you!
David, I'm laughing. Wins against the Brewers? They are worse than the last time the Nats faced them. These are the teams you have to beat up.
Nats get Kyle Lohse tomorrow. TJord has to pitch real well.
DP,
Riggleman used to call it a "clean game". I like that description and wish we saw more of them this year. Hopefully there will be a lot more this season.
So I went to check Facebook before leaving, and whaddaya know, my BIL and his wife were at this game!
Knoxville, anything in particular you want to know?
Nice win... Can't wait to watch this one from the beginning....
Wow, Julie Alexandria takes LaRoche's comment about Dan Haren's start and misunderstood what Adam said. Whoops, but Adam kept his poise and explained himself.
Good question about JDub's bat though!
Ghost, obviously it's not against a good team. I haven't suddenly forgotten about the Tigers series. But you can't control who you play. They did what they were supposed to do against a bad team and I'm happy with that for now.
Sec 3,
Just overall impressions of Miller Park the surrounding area, ease of transportation, etc. We (wife and I) have been to Cincy, Atlanta and Nats Park. Probably heading to Cleveland and Pittsburgh next season, although not necessarily for a Nats game.
The gutsy double steal and Sac Fly with a big assist to Jayson for that great slide really got it going. The Nats though were unlucky on several balls that were tattoo'd and became long flyouts.
Red Sox just hit a big home run. They're 3 outs away from beating the D'backs, who are in front of us.
our 1-2-3 hitters went 0-12 but a win is a win.
Very Nice!
I talked about Haren having this kind of second half a while back and I am just so happy he is finally showing his stuff. With Det now out our other 4 have to keep grinding and we have to hope that Taylor has 3 more starts in him. Its a lot to ask, but if Haren continues to throw like this, why wouldn't you try and get a two year deal at much less than what we paid this year? I am not saying he would take it but you never know.
Is there any word on Werth? That to me would be a huge blow. My guess is Davey will rest him tomorrow in the day game and lets hope he gets the correct treatment whatever it is.
Just taking it one at a time.
Go Nats!!
Knoxville, I have inquired of them. No doubt they are on their way out of the park, so I probably won't hear back tonight.
Werth's injury is the groin strain he suffered earlier. He can play through it. Davey said he's gonna give him tomorrow off and he could be ready for Monday.
Hey I'll take a 2 game streak right now
Who heard the question at the end when Davey said "I'm not going into that" and walked away.
I had no idea that we were 11.5 back against Atl...
Davey said there was some hazing going on before the game and the reporters asked what was going on and Davey smiled and said he's not going into that. It was nothing serious.
Yes MrsB. That's why we need to focus on the Reds. 6 back.
It's kinda laughable.... And terrible at the same time...
Hopefully, the Nats an just win and everything else take care of itself...
Ghost, a reporter asked "...what type of hazing was going on?"
I recorded the game so went back and heard it pretty clearly.
Thanks David & Paul. I replayed it and I couldn't hear it.
What a game in Tampa in extras. Watch it if you can.
Ghost, although admittedly, I had my left ear to the tube and the volume way up all the while my wife is like wtf? what fellow NI'ers will do for each other...haha.
Hope you saw it! I didn't give you much notice. Wil Myers walk-off single.
paul, I suffer from CHS which stands for Can't Hear S***.
I owe you!
No one from Syracuse eh? Kind of what he said about Ohlendorf isn't it?
Actually, i wouldn't be surprised to see Caleb Clay next. 8 out of his 9 starts in Syracuse were quality starts and with Detwiler down?
Amanda Comak @acomak
Adam LaRoche homered using Werth's bat -- at Desmond's suggestion. LaRoche: "You get to the point where you'll try anything."
Ghost, saw it, Rays are on fire...what's up with them trying to tear his uniform off?
odd...heck, even the tv guy was like "...I am still not a fan of ripping a guy's clothes off in a walk off win..."
so maybe its a Tampa thing?!
As the guy who proclaimed Dan Haren stinks on toast, I gladly doff my Nats cap tonight's starter.
Nicely done, Mr. Haren.
paul, that's become the new Walk-off celebration that many teams do. One team tore a guys jersey in half.
Our celebration seems to be attacking each other. Zim and Harper punched each other in the kidneys...
Ghost, you're right, they did that (kind of) to Rzim recently, must be the new thing.
wow, A-Rod may be A-screwed for not only the remainder of this year but all of next year too, MLB not really happy with his comments last night.
I found it. First jersey ripped off of a player was the David Frese in 2011.
http://www.uni-watch.com/2011/10/28/cardinals-literally-rip-the-jersey-off-of-david-freese/
Detwiler is more optimistic than Davey.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/nationals-watch/2013/aug/3/ross-detwiler-could-miss-remainder-nationals-seaso/
I hope Detwiler gets healthy. On the off chance we somehow make the playoffs, we need him. I don't want Haren in a playoff game. Even after his improvement.
A belated Woo Hoo! Was at PNats game, got a Sharkarine, and saw Purke pitch. Great curveball. Had some command issues on the fastball but that could be from wet conditions. PNATS were hitting tonight. Don't think the Pelicans are that good. Saw Michael Taylor good range in OF. He got robbed of a HR by a bad call from the ump.
The bad news: Brian Goodwin to the DL with an injury to his right arm.
The good news: The Nats promote fleet Billy Burns to Harrisburg. Keep climbing, kid.
hey manassas, congrats on wedding.
GoSM, saw the Freese jersey at HOF this winter. Cool stuff!
nice win btw, nats.

Amen. Who saw THIS coming a month ago? I sure didn't. Of course, there are some who claim I wouldn't see a locomotive coming if I was tied down to the track, so maybe that's no measure...
People questioning whether Haren should have been pulled should remember that he had some sort of arm/shoulder injury earlier this year -- which he and the team downplayed but I believe there was something to it. A few days after Ohlendorf couldn't make it out of the gate, it makes sense to take it easy with him.
Saw a headline about the Jays being stressed by starters not making it out of the first inning three days in a row. Heck, that's business as usual around here.
I haven't been to see the PNats this year. Checking out Burns....college kid...24 years old. hitting .308 in over 300 AB's. No HR's but has swiped 51 bases in 56 attempts. Not to shabby. Michael Taylor has more pop with 8 bombs and has stolen 35 bases with an excellent percentage also. Taylor probably got a bigger upside with the power, but hey, Span ain't a long ball hitter and doesn't steal bases either, so who knows about Burns. Anyone seen Burns on D?
Manassas.....wedding day over, your wallet a little lighter, all the worrying is over, Nats on 2 game streak....life is good. Prop your feet up and enjoy the game
Manassas Nats Fan, congrats on your daughter's wedding. Hope the new couple have a long and happy life together.
Good news Purke had a good outing, bad news Kimball got pounded
