Game 121: Nats at Braves

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
ATLANTA — Hello from Turner Field, where it's an unseasonably cool, 68 degrees, with a threat of rain throughout the weekend. Who would've thought the Nationals would need to break out their windbreakers for a mid-August series in Atlanta, but will be sweating next week in Chicago (where it's supposed to be humid and in the upper-80s)?

The Nats come to town having come THISCLOSE to a six-game winning streak at home, if not for Rafael Soriano's blown save yesterday evening. They face a much stiffer challenge this weekend, facing those powerhouse Braves, who have won 17 of their last 19 and opened up a commanding, 14 1/2-game lead in the NL East.

Speaking of Soriano, odds are he won't be available to pitch tonight after appearing in three straight games (and nearly suffering two straight blown saves). Tyler Clippard also has appeared the last three days, which could leave the recently recalled Drew Storen as Davey Johnson's closer tonight should the situation present itself.

First things first: The Nationals need a good start from Taylor Jordan, who could be making his final outing of the year before his team-imposed shutdown, and they need to score some runs off Atlanta rookie left-hander Alex Wood, before they can contemplate who is going to close tonight.

Updates to come, so please check back...

7:35 p.m. — And we're underway with a ball from Alex Wood to Denard Span. For what it's worth, Davey Johnson said earlier that Rafael Soriano and Tyler Clippard would be unavailable tonight only if they told him, and to that point neither had. So take it for what it's worth.

7:44 p.m. — Bryce Harper, who was booed resoundingly in his first plate appearance in Atlanta since the Julio Teheran dust-up, doubled into the left-field corner. But that's all the Nats were able to do against Wood in the top of the first.

7:54 p.m. — And the Braves jump on the Nats for an early run, thanks in large part to Wilson Ramos' throwing error on Jason Heyward's stolen base attempt. That allowed Heyward to advance to third with nobody out, and moments later Heyward scored on a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Freddie Freeman. Taylor Jordan did a nice job to limit the damage there, but the Nats trail 1-0 early.

8:07 p.m. — Boy, Fredi Gonzalez probably wishes he had a challenge flag right about now. Chris Johnson appeared to dive back into first base safely on Jordan Schafer's lineout to third, but umpire Marvin Hudson called him out. Sadly (for Fredi, that is) there won't be any challenge system in place until next season, so the Nats happily took the double play. Still 1-0 Braves after two.

8:17 p.m. — The Nats are having all kinds of trouble picking up the ball out of Wood's hand so far tonight. He's got a funky throwing motion that hides the ball well, and it's paying off for him. He's got four strikeouts through three scoreless innings.

8:35 p.m. — Jordan nearly induced his third double play in three innings, but Rendon's throw on the turn sailed wide and that allowed another run to score. So it's 2-0 Braves after three, though Jordan isn't really to blame for that.

8:45 p.m. — Ooh, intrigue in the top of the fourth as Wood's first pitch drills Harper in the back. Before you get all worked up, though, it was a 77 mph breaking ball. No intent there. Harper got his revenge, though, going first to third on Werth's single to left-center. That proved significant, because it allowed him to score on Desmond's 6-4-3 double play, cutting the Braves' lead to 2-1 in the middle of the fourth.

9:03 p.m. — Just a brutal sequence by the top of the Nats lineup in the top of the fifth. They had runners on second and third with one out and the Braves infield playing back. But Span struck out on three pitches, failing to even put the ball in play. He has struck out three times now tonight. And then Zimmerman grounded out to second to end the inning. That leaves the Nats 0-for-6 tonight with runners in scoring position, three of those outs on K's and another on a double play. That's your season in a nutshell, folks. Still 2-1 Braves in the middle of the fifth.

9:10 p.m. — Three errors on the Nats infield in five innings. The most recent one was a tough hop for LaRoche, but it's an E nonetheless. Props to Jordan for escaping major damage. It remains 2-1 after five.

9:28 p.m. — All in all, a solid outing for Taylor Jordan, who is probably done after six innings of two-run ball. Neither run was earned. He's at 142 total innings for the season, so this could be it for him in 2013. Ross Ohlendorf tossed four innings in a rehab start at Potomac tonight and should be ready to come off the DL in five days.

9:37 p.m. — Nothing happening for the Nats at the plate tonight. Wood finishes his outing with nine strikeouts and zero walks. He's the fifth pitcher to put up that line against the Nats this joining, joining Cliff Lee, Matt Harvey, Roy Oswalt and Clayton Kershaw. So, yeah, three of the guys to do that are named Lee, Harvey and Oswalt. Too bad Ian Kennedy didn't do it, too. Still 2-1 at the stretch.

9:58 p.m. — Wow, some fireworks in the top of the eighth as Luis Avilan fires a first-pitch fastball into Bryce Harper's upper back. Harper was not pleased, neither was Davey Johnson. Plate umpire Marty Foster issued warnings to both benches, and Avilan departed to a standing ovation from the crowd. So how did the Nats respond: Werth delivered a two-out RBI single to right, tying this game 2-2 in the eighth.

10:07 p.m. — Nice job by Craig Stammen with two scoreless innings. We go to the ninth, it's still 2-2 and Craig Kimbrel enters to face LaRoche, Ramos and a pinch-hitter.

10:15 p.m. — The Nats got two hits off Kimbrel in the top of the ninth, but they couldn't get the go-ahead run home. So now here's Drew Storen in his return to the big leagues, pitching the bottom of the ninth of a tie game in Atlanta.

10:30 p.m. — Wow, quite a performance by Storen. He allowed a one-out single to Simmons but came up huge to strike out Evan Gattis (who had been 6-for-8 with four homers as a pinch-hitter!) on a nasty slider. Storen then got Gerald Laird to fly out, ending a 17-pitch, 13-strike inning and sending this one to extra innings, still tied 2-2.

10:40 p.m. — Harper (who nearly was hit by another pitch just now) showed some nice discipline in laying off a 3-2 slider from Scott Downs to draw a one-out walk in the 10th. Unfortunately, Werth grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Bottom of the 10th upcoming, with Ian Krol now in.

10:47 p.m. — And Justin Upton takes Krol deep to end this one. Nats lose 3-2 in 10.

If H-Rod ever tried to plunk a batter it would probably end up as a perfect strike.

I am sick to my stomach! Davey, wake your ass up and get in Foster's face...your star player gets hit 3, repeat 3 times tonight and your team also gets a warning...this is disgusting! and the braves fans cheer that BS! what a joke!!! we are a spineless team...we should have retaliated last week but we didn't and this is what happens!!!

awful...MLB welcome to the WWf in the ATL.

DESMOND STINKS!!!!!!!!! cmon man make them pay

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Desi not hitting very well tonight.

Nats106 said...

Sorry take that back. Classless thing to say.

Knoxville Nat said...

Worse part of the whole thing is we are tied after giving them 2 unearned runs.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He might stink, but leads mlb ss in extrabase hits.

Sure stinks tonight though.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Harper getting hit is still a good play for us when their bullpen is in.

Anyone notice they are targeting the back instead of the leg tonight? Nice of them since he has leg problems. The Braves are classy people.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Just an aside, but Atlanta seems to have gotten lowbrow since they parted with Time Warner and TBS.

atlanta - the new philly

mick said...

atlanta still is bitching about Sherman... glad union kicked their hillbilly asses

lol

BigCat said...

It's time.

Jane Elizabeth said...

TBS didn't want the Braves doing this right before re-runs of Friends. It spoils the mood. Now they are unleashed!

Tonight is an example of why the Braves are going to fold like a cheap suitcase in the playoffs. More than 14 games ahead and they are trying to engage in a beanball war against an opponent who has no chance to catch them? THAT'S a team playing with insecurity. The Nats may have been gutless in not retaliating for Bryce, but the Braves are the true punks.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Why waste a lefty on throwing at Harper, however....

Who knows but the Nats need to get hit like Yost.

Nats106 said...

Karkolchak, Amen

mick said...

lets win this now

Unknown said...

and in a 2-2 game we can't retaliate nor should we unless we go up 10-2 but MLB needs to send a message to the Braves and their fans, what a lame and embarrassing display to cheer hitting any player especially 3 times!!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Soiano must have woke up Hector Sanchez.

He hit his second homer abother 3 run. Job in Miami not an easy pkace to homer.

In the 7th Giants have 14 runs 18 hits.

Jane Elizabeth said...

You can't bring a closer in during a tie game.

BigCat said...

Wonder what harpers dad thinks about his boy being repeatedly drilled while we shake in our boots. As I said...... No heart, no guts. Whatever you want to call it

mick said...

Bigcat agreed... Nats look like pussies

UnkyD said...

Watch this...

Jane Elizabeth said...

We need to win this game. Sandy Koufax and Walter Johnson never threw at anybody. That is no sign of manhood, even though I sort of wanted to plunk somebody last week.

Nats106 said...

Get right up on the plate and dare Kimbrell to hit you. Come on auto 5 game suspension? Do it!

mick said...

that sucked ramos

mick said...

Mr 175 BA up

Unknown said...

Cat, but now what you do is kick their as&, that's all you can do tonight...retaliation will happen but not tonight.

need a PR for Ramos Davey!!!!!!!!

TimDz said...

Retaliation NEEDS to come during tomorrow nights game....
Otherwise, the Braves will continue to punk us...
The Nats need to make a statement not only for the remainder of this season, but for next season as well...

Knoxville Nat said...

Freddie Freeman, first AB tomorrow night.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Come on, Span!

mick said...

TimD

agreed

come on Span

Unknown said...

and if Davey would have PR for Ramos a batter before we would be up 1.

waddu eye no said...

welcome home drew. go for it

BigCat said...

Span...... Jeez Pitiful

mick said...

I know Span is a great fielder...but he SUCKS in the clutch with the bat

0 for 5 is bs for a lead off batter

Jane Elizabeth said...

Good job, Davey, making sure that Span gets 5 plate appearances against a road lefty.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

A chopper would be fine over Kimbrel's head.

Davey's siesta cost us a run.

Had Suzuki been running for Ramos he would have been on third, and scored on Lombo's grounder.

Unknown said...

Span...good field, no hit!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Actually only batted 4 times against a lefty, but was awful in all 5 tries.

mick said...

Drew has a chance to prove he is back

Jane Elizabeth said...

I know of no one in the stats community who recommends using your player with the lowest on base percentage among your eight as your lead-off man. Only Davey and Rizzo, apparently believe that.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

With Stras 99 mph

mick said...

WOD

that is why Davey needs to head off into the sun set

JaneB said...

I'm torn between wanting Drew to have a 1-2-3 inning and wanting him to plunk someone. Like Simmons

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Davey forgot he was on the team.

mick said...

oh boy

Jane Elizabeth said...

How many feet will Gattis's homer go? I say 429 feet.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Ny leties in KC we can use the DH for Span.

mick said...

WOD

lol

Jane Elizabeth said...

He is just setting us up.....

BigCat said...

Check runner drew

Jane Elizabeth said...

Yeah! O feet! I was wrong.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Didnt hang a slider.

waddu eye no said...

druuuuu

UnkyD said...

Welcome back, Kid...

mick said...

very nice Drew!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Welcome back Drew. Stay tough the rest of the way.

David Proctor said...

That's the Storen I know and love.

Unknown said...

nice job Drew, playoff type AB's/atmosphere and he did well, may be the closest we get all year but happy for Storen...if it were Soriano, we would have all needed to attend confession by now and its only 1030pm.

mick said...

paul

lololo

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I knew on 3-1 he was going to swing no matter what.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Werth having a terrible night.

mick said...

that just sucked!

Unknown said...

not as confident now, we needed to score that inning, the Barves have our #...I really dislike them immensely.

mick said...

that was Nats chance....I think game over now

David Proctor said...

Werth is 2/5 with an RBI. I think most guys would take that terrible night.

mick said...

Krol...was terrible last outing

Nats106 said...

Braves last 20 years:

2 NL Pennants
1 World Series
-0- class

What scum the organization, fans and anything associated with them are.

mick said...

Nats106

agreed and

0-1 in civil war

lol

Unknown said...

Krol to JUpton?

why?

mick said...

of course

David Proctor said...

Krol should not be facing righties, but in extra innings, you can't play matchups.

mick said...

learning now who should be here in 2014 and who should not

kroll a joke

Knoxville Nat said...

Big difference tonight isn't the HR but the two unearned runs we gave them.

mick said...

new post

Nats106 said...

Mick, I'd have added that, but I'm from Virginia, so I can't talk. Hope you had a great vacation.

Tomorrow Nats needs to strike first.

Depot Master said...

I'm curious, if someone knows how to look this up... That was obviously not a fastball. I wonder how many of these killer home runs have been called by Suzuki vs. Ramos?
