One day after falling down early thanks to a miserable outing by Dan Haren, the Nats once again found themselves playing catchup because of their starting pitcher. This time it was Ross Detwiler who turned in a disastrous start, allowing seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work, including two home runs and nine total hits.
The Nats rallied to cut the deficit to one, but it was not enough in their 7-6 loss to the Rockies on Sunday. Detwiler dug a large hole and continued what has been a rough month for Nationals starters. In June they hold a 4.43 ERA as a rotation through 20 games.
Manager Davey Johnson attributed Detwiler’s bad day to pitch selection.
“He’s been relying since he’s been here on his fastball, and it’s a good fastball hitting club,” Johnson said.
“If you don’t hit your spots on sinkers down and away, they’re going to hurt you. First ball he gave up to Cuddy was a four-seamer out over the plate. It’s a good fastball hitting club, and you have to use set-up pitches. He’s still early in doing that.”
Detwiler’s afternoon started to turn in the second inning when he allowed a solo home run to Michael Cuddyer. He then allowed three more runs in the third and another three in the fourth.

The Giants are 38-37 and just got dominated by the Marlins. Marlins won the series too.
Okay, this has little to do with the Nats, but this is definitely the place to bring it up.
How is your internet coverage at the park? Mine is just fine when we walk in the gate and when we're in the Stars and Stripes club area. But when we get to our seats - section 219 - I can't get jack squat. I don't know if it's because we're marginally under the overhang from the suite level above us or what, but it's really frustrating.
Our carrier is AT&T. My phone is a Motorola Atrix 4g, an early 4G (not LTE) version; Cunegonde has an Atrix HD, which has LTE, and she can't get anything there either.
We're wondering if it's our phones that are failing us, AT&T, or if we're simply in a dead spot. Thing is, people around us on Sprint and Verizon seem to be able to connect just fine.
So what has everyone else's experience been at the park?
My iPhone 5/Verizon does ok in 311
I have AT&T on a iPhone. Coverage has actually been better this year than in the past. Used to be that when crowds got big I got nothing, but today I was able to check email between innings over 3G.
Wow, this is some game in LA.
My iPad is thru my tmobile hot spot... And it's been fine every time I go to the park... I never sit in the same section though...
I try to sit places the ball likely will not go...
I have to hang some of this latest loss on Davey. Sticking with the likes of Kopernus (I don't want to learn the correct spelling in the hope he'll be back in SYR where he belongs) and AAAA Marrero was just sad. He could have pinch-hit ALR for Marrero a couple of times when he mattered. Instead, Dogmeat swings at the first pitch and flies out meekly.
I am shocked Marrero is here and Tyler Moore is not. I thought the Marrero ship sailed two years ago; guy is tougher to get rid of than a bad Athlete's Foot fungus.
Davey's excuse was lame. That he "had" to play Marrero to get him some at-bats. Davey, if you're reading this: Dogmeat can get his at-bats in SYR where I don't care when he overanxiously swings at the first thing he sees.
Get Span (Unofficial Whipping Boy of Nats Insider 2013) and ALR back in that lineup. We're starving for hits as it is. Can't afford the like of Kopernus and Marrero any longer.
My phone (ATT) was ok in 310 today. I also bring my CLEAR hotspot. That usually works when ATT fails. But, honestly, I rarely go online during a game, I'm too into the game.
10th inning. The Pirate scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th and Grilli (who has been nails all season) is closing. Gives up 2 runs, has 2 runners on base. Trout is batting. Best reliever (other than Rivera) vs best hitter (other than Cabrera). Trout K's.
He's just not clutch... ;)
I didn't know that was Cunegonde in the hat, Candide, or I would have said hello.

Matt Purke had a good outing for Hagerstown, throwing five scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts and one walk.

Good news!
I know a lot of Nat's fans from online blogs weren't too happy with the fact that Detwiler was giving a cheeky grin as he was getting pulled. Not a care in the world. Have some pride guys.
I'm driving home and heard Davey's piece on the radio. I think it was simple. When the game was 7-0 and even 7-2 he pretty much figured it was a lost cause. See, also, Weiss taking Cargo out of the game so Rex Brothers had to hit for himself. So why not give the kids some at-bats.
Then by some miracle, and I mean miracle, Solano gets that double and it's 7-6. Seriously, I don't think anyone in the park--even Davey--expected that to happen, he was just going with his last RH hitter against the lefty and it worked.
ABSOLUTELY Davey should have swapped out Marrero for the 9th and put LaRoche in, even though it's lefty-lefty. Davey thinks very well, but not fast enough. He has a plan and he sticks with it despite changing circumstance--example, the time he pulled Gio, even though Gio was cruising. Davey thinks, LH/RH and pinch hit for the pitcher if it's late and close--that's his method, and he rarely deviates. So he had success with Solano by that method, and not with Marrero. That's Davey.
Also, listening to Davey, he can barely talk. Does he smoke? He sounds like it. Or was he yelling at the guys behind the scenes?

Davey chews a lot of tobacco. That supposedly is worse for your mouth and throat.
Thanks, NL. No, Davey doesn't smoke... but he's sounding worse and worse. Spring of 2012 was the worst; he claimed it was allergies. But allergy season is long gone, and he still sounds terrible.
I only hope it's from yelling at the likes of Kopernus, Marrero, Span, Lombo, Espi (in absentia) et al.
Looks like Lannan gave up 6 runs (4 earned) with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched.
In the 5th inning, Revere made what looks like a 3-base fielding error (I'm reading the play-by-play). Lannan gave up three doubles, and three runs scored.
In the 6th, Lannan walked the first two batters and then gave up a double, scoring one of the walks. Then he was taken out. The reliever let one of the inherited runners score on a sac-fly.
Matt Harvey came out after 72 pitches because there was a rain-delay.

#Nats Dan Haren when asked what was sending him to the disabled list, started his answer with this: 'I don’t know, what’d they say?' #MLB

When were you around? We were at the 312 picnic table until 1:15 with ArVAFan and Natsfan1a. Didn't see you - or at least nobody claiming to be you introduced herself...
Candide, now THAT is funny!
I'm sure they have enough medical reports on Haren's back and hip to cover themselves, but it is funny.
For those who haven't had enough yuks today, Major League II is on MLB.
Bob Uecker playing the real Sunshine Bobby Carpenter.
I spoke to, I think, 1a (I'm not good with recognizing people) and then she went to her seat. I waited until about 1:15 but I didn't know who was who, so then I went to my seat.
Anyone else tired of seeing us split or not get swept and being tod its ok, progress is being made?
Not good on Haren. Sounds like he is being hrodded.
One thing I do like about Haren is that he followed up his respone about the right shoulder as saying he was NOT going to blame his injury on his issues...
I thought that was stand up as he easily could have copped out...
Allergy season isn't over yet. Two of the five in our car today are still suffering (indeed, one was so out of it between the allergens and the meds that he wouldn't drive). Not saying that's Davey's problem, but it could be.
Candide: wonderful to meet you and Cunegonde again. Small world indeed.

Just got home after going out to eat with some friends after the game. Haven't read posts or comments but wanted to say that it was nice meeting Candide, Cunegonde, and ArVaFan before the game. I did later speak to NatsLady as well.
In hindsight, with us some times going with an AAA line up and having IFs play OFs and not scoring runs and getting hammered with the injury bug to some of our big bats and SPs.... It's amazing that we are around 500...
The next time everyone decides to go to a game... Let me know... I go to 1 home game a series, at least....
Will do, MrsB. Our next scheduled Nats game isn't until July, and we also have a P-Nats game that month.
p.s. We were also having trouble getting a signal at the park.
p.p.s. My cat is very disappointed in me for leaving him alone all day. But I digress.
MrsB - Get thee to the NIDO Spreadsheet and enter your name in the first empty space at the bottom of column A. Then go across and whenever you plan to go to a game, enter your section and row in the corresponding cell under the game date. The number of people going that day will be automagically updated in row 4, and you can see for yourself who's going and where they'll be sitting. There seems to be an unwritten rule that the more-or-less official meeting place is at the picnic tables behind section 312. I think people should come there with a placard they can hold up that says "NIDO Drinks Owed Settlement Area" or somesuch so you don't have to go around to total strangers and ask them uncomfortable questions such as, "I beg your pardon; do you owe me a drink?"
"I like pitching Friday night, especially against the Nationals,” Harvey said with a smile, remembering out-dueling Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg April 19 under those Friday Night Lights.
I mean, who doesn't like pitching against the nationals on any night? Wish we could make Harvey pay for that statement, but it probably doesn't happen. This is something that should fire our team up.
1a, we were almost an hour late getting home to feed Samoa, because Cunegonde thought she needed to buy some groceries for lunch this coming week. She squawked at us when we got home. I told her it wasn't my fault, but the cat worships Cunegonde (and vice versa) and hates me.
Is this your cat?
Candide, I love the sad cat diary almost as much as I love Henri the existentialist cat.
I am going Wednesday. $1 hot dog night
I do not get very good reception.
My AT&T service at the park sucks. Those with LTE seem to be just fine, but my iPhone 4S struggles to send/receive even if I have several bars. It's been this way for years, and has gotten worse as attendance has increased. I presume it's a network congestion thing. A solution from the park would be to try and augment with wifi but that seems to only be for the press.
A few responses before signing off for the night. I seem to get adequate reception with AT&T in the Infield Gallery. The "Guest" Wifi doesn't work. Maybe it's not for guests like me.
It ain't allergies. Davey chews. Big time.
I can't believe MLB lets teams get away with stunts like the Nats are pulling with Haren and the DL. Good thing we coined a term for it, "HRodding" (Row 37)before he left the team.
I have GTE phone and it works poorly for internet fine for texting.
Second thing, i did something last podt that causes replies to show in my inbox .
How can I get rid of that, that is a feature I do not want.
I think I figured it out. Got last note but wont get this.

Went to PNats game tonight -- Robbie Ray pitched. He as decent stuff but had shaky command. He got the win because he team scored runs. Did not go very deep. Good place for him to put things together. They don't show pitch speed so I don't know about that. Fun to watch. Michael Taylor plays a nice center field and can hit, kid named Kevin Keyes has tons of raw power. They play clean heads up defense. Even though the facilities are crap, the atmosphere is good , especially on a fireworks night. Minor league baseball is fun. Folks were buzzing about the possibility of Bryce this week.
Swami I love the myrtle beach pelican games here, great stadium. Always see the PNats when they are in town.
Boz sez Nats are eyeing Feldman, Garza and Nolasco as possible pickup for that elusive No. 5 starter slot.

PNats field took a lot of heat a couple years ago but actually is not bad now. The park is old and outdated but it still is a good place to watch a game
New stadium in the planning stages - maybe the next two years.
How many more years is werth's contract?
Cool article for Boz with regard to the dynamic between the fans and the team and the team's evolution.
I'm suddenly kind of excited to experience my first trade deadline as a fan who's really paying attention.
Bos has a tendency to be very prophetic when it comes to these things. Interesting.
So... What're you saying about his sources... ;)
Also, imo, Boz isn't framing it as though the Nats are seeking them out, he's just saying they're the most likely good starters to become available and be relatively affordable at the trade deadline.
Expect Davey and Rizzo to support the current players...until they drop the ax.
"How many more years is werth's contract?"
This is year 3 of a 7-year contract.
