Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
Back here on South Capitol Street, the Nationals have Jayson Werth back in their lineup after he left Sunday's game with what appeared to be a groin injury. But, in a surprise development, Ryan Zimmerman is not listed on Davey Johnson's lineup card. You wouldn't think he'd need a day off after the club didn't play yesterday, but perhaps there's a little nagging something going on. Stay tuned.
Gio Gonzalez gets the start, hoping to continue his impressive run while actually earning the win for a change. Right-hander Trevor Cahill is on the mound for Arizona.
Updates to come...

7:07 p.m. — We are underway on a steamy, 90-degree Tuesday night in the District. Safe to say summer has arrived at last. Gio Gonzalez starts off Willie Bloomquist with a fastball for strike one.
7:14 p.m. — This one started off a bit ragged, with Bloomquist lacing a double to right-center to lead things off. Jayson Werth couldn't get there in time and didn't appear to be moving around real well. I talked to Jayson before the game and he said his groin was fine and didn't think he'd have any limitations tonight. Watching that first play, I'm not so sure about that. The good news: Gio battled back from the leadoff double and escaped without allowing a run. He got Aaron Hill to pop out, the super-dangerous Paul Goldschmidt to ground out and then struck out Miguel Montero on a good curveball to end the inning.
7:31 p.m. — Three hits so far allowed by Gio, but he's been helped out by his defense. Ian Desmond made a really nice play on Cody Ross' bouncer to short. Denard Span then fired a perfect, one-hop strike to Kurt Suzuki to nail Martin Prado trying to score on A.J. Pollack's base hit up the middle. That's Span's third outfield assist of the season .So it remains scoreless as we move to the bottom of the second.
7:50 p.m. — Another scoreless inning from Gio, capped off by an impressive changeup to Goldschmidt for his second strikeout of the night. That's becoming more and more of a weapon for Gonzalez, one that adds another dimension to his repertoire. Still 0-0 as we go the bottom of the third and the Nats still look for their first hit off Trevor Cahill.
8:07 p.m. — Whoa, it's an offensive explosion by the Nats! And I mean a real offensive explosion. Five runs, to be exact. That's only the third time this year they've plated five runs in an inning. And it included a LaRoche three-run homer, only the seventh hit by the Nats this year (plus Desmond's grand slam last week in Philly). Other highlights of the rally: Span delivered the first RBI single up the middle, bringing home Kurt Suzuki. Anthony Rendon then delivered yet another base hit to the opposite field. By my count, 24 of his 31 hits have been hit to either center or right fields. Werth added his own RBI single to left. LaRoche then brought everybody home with a three-run blast to left-center, another opposite-field shot. It's 5-0 Nats after three.
8:40 p.m. — Make it 6-0 Nats after five. Werth got things going with a double to right-center, the third time he's reached base tonight. He later scored on Desmond's sac fly as the Nationals take out their offensive frustrations on Cahill, who somehow remains in this game. Gio, meanwhile, is cruising along, five scoreless innings in the books and thrilled to finally get some run support.
8:56 p.m. — Gio finally started to show some signs of fatigue in the sixth. He gave up three straight hits, allowing his first run, and also issued a two-out walk, drawing Steve McCatty out of the dugout for a chat and putting Tyler Clippard to work in the bullpen. Gio is now at 91 pitches through six, and you wonder if that might be it for him. 6-1 Nats moving to the bottom of the sixth.
9:06 p.m. — Or maybe not. Gio hit for himself in the bottom of the sixth, and now he's back out for the seventh. I'll be interested to see how he looks here. Drew Storen is now warming in the pen just in case.
9:28 p.m. — And "Just in case" indeed happened. Gonzalez lasted just two batters in the seventh before Davey came out from the dugout to make the switch. So in came Storen, who got himself in trouble with a two-out walk to Aaron Hill, forcing him to face the dangerous Goldschmidt in a big spot. And Goldschmidt delivered an RBI single, extending the inning. Making matters worse, Rendon then booted a hard grounder to second, bringing another runner home. All of a sudden, it was 6-3 and Storen was facing the tying run at the plate in Cody Ross. With the count 3-2, Ross swung mightily and something went flying into shallow left field. Fortunately for Storen, it was Ross' bat. The ball wound up in Suzuki's mitt for a big strikeout to end the inning. Its' 6-3 Nats at the stretch.
9:47 p.m. — Golden opportunity for the Nats to tack on in the bottom of the seventh, but a questionable send by Trent Jewett got Rendon thrown out at the plate. Then, with Ryan Zimmerman pinch-hitting for Chad Tracy against a left-hander, the rally fizzled on a pop-up to the center of the diamond. It remains 6-3 Nats and now Rendon is shifting to third base, with Steve Lombardozzi at second base. Tyler Clippard in to pitch the eighth.
9:53 p.m. — This one's not over quite yet, folks. Martin Prado, that noted Nat-killer, launched a solo homer off Clippard to begin the eighth, so that trims the lead to 6-4. Clippard, though, stopped the bleeding right there and retired the side following the homer, so now the Nationals are three Rafael Soriano outs away from a victory.
10:01 p.m. — There's your insurance run. Lombardozzi doubles and then scores as reliever Brad Ziegler couldn't handle Goldschmidt's feed on a potential 3-1 groundout. So it's now 7-4 as Soriano enters for the ninth.
10:15 p.m. — That's it. Soriano closes out a 7-5 victory for his 20th save (the D'backs scored one late and seriously threatened). And Gio Gonzalez gets his long-awaited fourth win, his first since May 5. The Nats are back at .500 (38-38).

FWIW, I'm thinking Span held up on Rendon's single to make sure it didn't carry all the way out to Parra in right. It was hit very hard.
Davey needs to learn (and I say this knowing Davey knows more about baseball than I will ever even come close to knowing) that smallball can set up the big inning sometimes. That inning started with a walk, a bunt, a hit and then some solid ABs and a home run.
"David, it's all elementary my dear Watson, but Span would've dead meat if he had tried to get to third. He did better by rattling Cahill."
Agreed 100%
Fair enough Sec. 3, I did not consider that.
Gio is looking NASTY. So's the D!!!
Gosh darn... What a great inning....
Yeah, we most definitely need to play more small ball... It does nothing but help... And then sprinkle in the homers...last inning was phenomenal... And a great example of why we should do it more...
No, NatsJack. I know it was Gio doing it this time. But I think when the offense is so pressed to score runs, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have a position player do it too.
Harper done after 3 innings in Potomac. Had a pretty eventful day.
Only negative he was picked off.
I'm actually happy he was picked off because it made him dive back. Let's him really test the knee.
Good to see Zuki on base....
David Proctor, I really think Span would've gotten nailed, but his whole sequence was what I expected all year from Denard. Get on, rattle the pitcher, move along and rattle him some more. Make Cahill worry about the runner more than the batter.Speed kills. Even perceived speed.
Harper walked after a full count.
Noticed the first base coach was an aqaintace of mine.
Interesting pitcher for Nats was 34 and Harper wore 32.
I am a little disappointed that we didnt score at least 1 run right there....
Don't let up....
Add on runs are a MUST!
= #EatFace
but ... no second helpings there.
Good news about Harper... Now to wait and hear how he's doing tomorrow...
This ump has a big strike zone. That's great news for Gio. He doesn't do well when getting squeezed (but who does).
I hate how Bob and FP rag on sabermetrics so much.
Gio has been awesome lately... I hope he gets a win tonight...he deserves 1...
DP - Concur
FP has made no effort to hide his disdain for Moneyball. I lean slightly to one side of the middle on that one.
Jayson was not running hard to second. He's been hitting though so no complaints.
Jayson was running gingerly there.... I'm surprised he was safe....
#EatFace
Okay, need some add-on #EatFace runs.
Luck was on our side right there....
Nice!
Werth was running just as fast as he needed to. How about Adam?
Lets bring 'em home, Desi.
Good enough!
Productive out!!! Way to go Desi....
Nice play by Prado.
"Gio has been awesome lately... I hope he gets a win tonight...he deserves 1..."
In a big way.
Seriously re: Prado.
LMAO NatsJack!
You're killing me, Jack!
Hahaha... NatsJack - I was a out to say... I'm glad to see Eck not with his face in that dang book! Lol...
Jack, I'm sure Eck told Desi to get some air under the ball.
LOL NatsJack. How about an extension? He deserves it!
Double play ball now please.

'Moneyball' the book/movie or 'moneyball' the notion that you make decisions based on actual analysis rather than eyeball impressions?
Need a DP right here , please....
Go off speed a Gio/z00k.
Off speed junk... They're starving.
Love how Gio talks to himself on the mound.
Uh oh. Out of nowhere, trouble.
Pheeeeeeeew
Great job Gio.... Way to get out of it...
Good job Gio. He should take the rest of the night off. I didn't realize Gio had thrown so many pitches so often until FP mentioned it.
Ok... Grass cut... WHAT'S THIS?! Baseball?! On my old-timey 500lb toob TV?! Oh, yeah... The cable guy came, today!
Welcome to the 20th century, UnkyD!!! (Now, when the TV fairy brings me a flat screen, I'll join the 21st lol...)
Nice escape, Gio Houdini!

Nice escape, Gio Houdini!
Cunegonde and I hatehatehate those Greenberg and Bederman commercials.
Y'know, Gio with bases loaded is becoming almost relaxing. Has he let a run score in that situation since he pulled it together in the bottom of the first in Pittsburgh?
Interesting that Gio is on-deck.
Christian Garcia pitched one inning (the first) in Syracuse. One hit, two strikeouts, no runs. 18 pitches, 9 strikes.
I think Gio's fine...especially with 7-8-9 coming up...
Oh, sorry, 8-9-1
Davey will pull him if he gets in trouble. Don't want to lose this one. :)
NEW YORK -- Livid over Alex Rodriguez's decision to tweet an update on his rehab process, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had a message for the third baseman.
"You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will]," Cashman told ESPN New York. "Alex should just shut the f--- up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."
Yikes.
Whoa!
I don't like the decision to keep Gio in. Another hit.
Who said this would be the day we played well BEFORE the game started, based on the perceived weak line up???
Cheers to u mate, whoever u were :-)
Rendon learning. Threw to first this time.
Nice move Rendon
Bravo Gio!!
Bullpen, hold it down for him!
I notice "Harper was not permitted to speak to the press." As it should be.
Harper has inadvertently created some controversy by speaking before so I'm glad they told him to shut up. I hope they told him a little more politely than Cashman told A-Rod though.

NatsLady at 4:54 and again at 6:33.
Drew is wild tonight.
who cares about the Yankees & especially A-Rod?!
Mississippi State giving the CWS away; Padres' first-round draft pick Hunter Renfroe with two ugly errors in 3rd (of course starting pitcher made two Es on the same play in the 1st); UCLA up 3-0.
Well, Scott, I worked late, so I didn't have a chance to voice my happiness that we at least had 3 outfielders in the line up. Now, that said, if Zimm need a night off, personally I'd rather Tracy starting at 3rd then to jack Rendon around. Tracy vs. Lombo at 3rd is a toss up to me.
Come on, Drew. Eat some face!
That's the first time a Rendon error has really hurt us.
wow! Drew/Rendon, here we go! we still got this tho...kid is learning at 2b but should have had it nonetheless.
Oops. Rookie error.
don't like Storen's location.
Alright not too much damage. Drew got the pitch he needed and Rendon just booted it. Could've been much worse.
Reading online sppears Storen caused a lot of this problem by walking Aaron Hill.
Rendon fielding or throwing error?
Nothing is ever easy!
Looks like we bunched our hits that is good, but time for more.
Should have the bottom of the lineup for Clip and Soriano, I think.
Uhm... Storen gave me a heart attack....
MNF, re. Rendon, fielding E but hey, he didn't let it bother him at the plate!
Rendon is not a fast man.
Trent! nobody out, what's up with this guy?!!
On one hand, Rendon scores if that's anyone but Parra probably. On the other had, it's Jewett's job to know about Parra's arm.
Idk if that was a good send by Jewitt....
Saw out at home eondered if Jewitt ill advisedly sent him.
No, Rendon is not fast. He was fast(er) before the injuries, but lost the speed tool. Jewett should know that--and Parra's arm. Too aggressive.
I can't stand T Jewitt... He has cost us with his 3rd base coach 'plays'....
DP, agree, know your OF arms Trent!! bases loaded, 0 outs with Desi coming up...come on! we need all the runs we can get with heart attack Clip coming in.
Lets go Zim!
*waits for the Zim haters to come out*
Pitch 5 was his to hit... Just missed it....
Isn't there an unwritten rule that says you are not to make the first out at third base or home plate? What was Trent thinking there?
like ghost said, rolling stones hang over with the wife?
Atlanta 3-1 in the 5th.
Come on Clip, really? I guess he was due. He hasn't given up a HR in forever.
Tyler Moore coming back?
Homer in this situation is actually not much worse than a walk.
So was that HR by Prado a MASN jinx?
Yikes, I liked it a lot better when we were leading 6-0.
Clippard meatball served to Prado.
Agreed, William. Reminds me of that saying that a home run kills a rally. It keeps the bases clean at least.
That is fine.
One more inning
Well, Soriano will have at least a 2-run lead. Be nice to add on, guys!
Soriano will be facing 1-2-3. Need to keep the bases clean before Goldschmidt.
I don't have anything positive to say about T Clippard... So I won't say anything...
We need 3 more outs... But I want some insurance runs!!!!!
KC tied it up.
I wish Roger were doing better at the plate. And not just for our sakes.
The Shark maintaining his swimming strength by not running to first....
Royals with a comeback
Looking at Clip's number he has had a good season
MrsB, Clippard has been pitching pretty well of late and Prado was due at some point against him.
Roger is 1/4 tonight and set up that big inning I thought. Not great, but at least he's not an automatic out like he was earlier in the season.
Aight Lombo.... I see you....
I'LL TAKE IT!
Gift!
Well, well, well--give an error, take an error!!!
YESSSSSS.... WHEW!!!!! thanks Lombo and D Span... And the Royals!
Span benefiting from his day off/benching. This is more like what we were expecting.
Denard Span!!
a break for the Nats, baseball gods are a smiling!
Oooh mama! I like that gift!
Rendon hit that ball extremely hard. Bad luck there--but he still has a 2-4 night. Dude is unbelievable (offensively).
Listening now. C and D say we received a gift back.
Thet said Rendon almost had another hit. Was it close?
Knox - I'm not a T Clippard fan at all... Haven't ever really been one... I root for him (by default) since he is on the Nats team but I'm not a fan....
Tailing ball to RF, MNF, but overall a routine out.
In his last 8.2 innings (including this one), Clip has given up exactly one run. (Eight appearances). That's really not bad...
MNF, right fielder made a running catch but wasn't like he had to dive...good solid hit and a decent to good catch.
Agreed, NL.
Raining like crazy in Maryland. Broadcast going in and out, off to radio....
tucked up here, boss...
Jeez, I thought that ball was gone. Soriano loves to give up long flyouts.
I sure like having an outfielder playing left field.
Shark getting some late inning action... Soriano, sometimes, looks like he just don't care....
Me too, Joe S....
Argh!!!
Uh Sori, lets not make this too interesting here.
Wtf
Thought Werth would've had that.
Ugh ugh ugh.
I wish they wouldn't ignore the runner. Keep him on 1st that run doesn't score.
Kinda surprised Jayson didnt catch that... But okay...
Come on Soriano.... Damn....
come on Soriano!! earn your $! this is absurd!
Prado up, ugh!
I like that Sori patted ALR on the heart. I wish that Prado wasn't up again. Bourbon stat!
Are you serious right now.... Now I am nervous... But it didnt score a runner... Come on Sori... End this...
Unacceptable. Should be a def replacement - werth hurt obviously
Braves ahead again
are you freaking kidding me..what the heck!!!
Did the blue's SZ just shift????
Thank God!
Soriano always makes it interesting. Always.
OK, then. Royals, now, do YOUR job.
I wanted to see who else untucked!!
What a save! Baseball statistics that means about as much as ....
Omg.... A win... Thanks.... Lord, my heart can't take this....
whewwwwww.....felt like Fred G. Sanford for a moment
"I'm comin to join ya Elizabeth"
Whew!
why do we have to make it that close? sorry performance by our so called reliever/closer.
5:00 AM comes early, I'm out of here for the night. Eat face.
Paul, I'm going to enjoy the win.that's a good team we just beat.
Joe, I agree and I am happy we won but when your starter leaves with 1 out in the 7th, a man on 2b and a 6-1 lead we won despite of our BP, not because of them.
Sometimes bp will give up runs. Important stat is the w
