Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
If they do play, Ross Detwiler will take the mound for the Nationals, trying to build off his solid-not-spectacular return from the DL last Thursday in Colorado. Detwiler faces a bolstered Phillies lineup, with Carlos Ruiz fresh off the DL himself and ready to wreak havoc on the Nats as he has done throughout his career.
Cliff Lee starts for Philadelphia, facing a Nationals lineup that desperately needs to get healthy and productive. Still waiting to hear if Denard Span will be back after missing last night's game with a bruised right foot, but he appeared to be moving around better after the night off.
Weather and game updates to come, so please check back...

6:30 p.m. — Your weather update: We're about 30 minutes from scheduled first pitch, and the tarp remains on the infield, with no sign of either team's starting pitcher. So it certainly appears the start of this game will be delayed.
7:45 p.m. — Good news: The tarp is being rolled up as we speak, the pitchers are headed to the bullpens and first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
8:15 p.m. — And we are underway at last. It's still raining pretty hard, but Cliff Lee gets this game started with a fastball to Denard Span for strike one.
8:21 p.m. — To the surprise of no one, Lee is pounding the strike zone from the get-go. Twelve of his 14 pitches in the first inning were strikes, the only two balls coming to Anthony Rendon (who still struck out). Ryan Zimmerman did single through the left side hole for a base hit, but that was it for the Nats in the top of the first. Here's Ross Detwiler.
8:28 p.m. — Nice bottom of the first for Detwiler, who needed only 10 pitches to retire the side. He also made a nifty snag of Michael Young's comebacker. Ryan Zimmerman also made a nice, twirling play and throw on Jimmy Rollins grounder. Scoreless through one.
8:35 p.m. — Cliff Lee: 20 strikes, 4 balls so far. In other words, his command is a bit off.
8:38 p.m. — Ross Detwiler, meanwhile, has needed only 16 pitches to record six outs. Wow, Lee can only wish he was that efficient. Scoreless through two.
8:56 p.m. — We've got a pitching clinic going on here tonight, folks. Lee continues to pound the strike zone. Detwiler continues to get quick outs. He did surrender a bloop single to Carlos Ruiz, with Jayson Werth not quite able to get to the ball in shallow right field, but otherwise he's been perfect. Three innings down and Detwiler has thrown only 34 pitches (22 strikes). Still scoreless here.
9:05 p.m. — As much as Lee attacks the strike zone, it only makes sense to try to pounce on him from the moment you step into the box. Which Werth just did in a big way. He ambushed Lee's first-pitch fastball in the top of the fourth, belting a home run to left that needed maybe .8 seconds to leave the park. It's 1-0 Nats as we move to the bottom of the fourth.
9:11 p.m. — But the Phillies come right back and score the tying run. Michael Young led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left-center, at which point Charlie Manuel decided to play small ball with the heart of his lineup. Jimmy Rollins put down a sacrifice bunt, a bit of an odd strategy, but it worked because Ryan Howard followed with a sacrifice fly to right. So it's 1-1 now moving on to the fifth.
9:27 p.m. — Denard Span has made a name for himself this year more for his glove than his arm but he just showed off an impressive hose with a pinpoint throw to the plate to nail Delmon Young, who was trying to score on Cliff Lee's single up the middle. Kurt Suzuki's tag was outstanding as well, ending the fifth inning with the game still tied 1-1.
9:37 p.m. — Another impressive at-bat from Rendon, who took an outside fastball from Lee and roped a base hit past the second baseman. Seriously, how many other members of the Nats current lineup consistently do that? Zimmerman, when he's hot. Not too many others that I can think of. It remains a 1-1 game, though, with neither team able to manufacture the go-ahead run against Lee and Detwiler, who continue to deal.
9:59 p.m. — Oof, rough bottom of the sixth for the Nats. Detwiler started to crumble on the mound, putting four straight batters on to begin the inning, with Michael Young delivering a perfect hit-and-run double to right field to score Revere with the go-ahead run. Detwiler at that point looked mighty fatigued, even though his pitch count remained under 70. But he then he very nearly righted the ship and escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam. He struck out Brown on a 95-mph fastball, then struck out Delmon Young on a breaking ball. And it looked like he got Frandsen to end the inning with a line drive to left. Except Lombardozzi got a bad jump, breaking back for a second before charging in and short-hopping the ball. Making matters worse, Lombo's throw to the plate didn't have much on it, bringing another run home. So just like that, it's 4-1 Phillies and now the Nats have to mount a serious late rally against Lee.
10:11 p.m. — Here's perhaps the most frustrating part of the evening: The Braves are on the verge of getting swept by the Mets in a doubleheader at Turner Field. There's an opportunity here for the Nationals to gain 1 1/2 games in the standings. Except they're down three runs and have only six offensive outs left. This would be a colossal waste of a golden opportunity.
10:27 p.m. — Holy moly, not only did Jeff Kobernus just hit the first home run of his career, he hit it off Cliff Lee. Yeah, I'm just as mystified by that development as anyone. It's now 4-2 Phillies, but the Nats are down to their final three outs.
10:40 p.m. — Speaking of shocking developments: Ryan Howard led off the bottom of the eighth with a stand-up triple. I know. Somehow, Drew Storen kept him from scoring. So here we go to the ninth, the Nats down two runs and facing Jonathan Papelbon. It'll be Zimmerman, Werth and LaRoche at the plate.
10:48 p.m. — No dramatic rally tonight. The Nats lose 4-2. Thanks to the Mets' doubleheader sweep of the Braves, they still actually gain 1/2-game in the standings. But the Phillies gain 1 1/2 games, and now these two clubs are tied for second place, 7 games back of Atlanta.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 351 of 351 Newer› Newest»swm, you are a disgrace. Find another place to complain.
52 pitches through 5 pitching great, then a simple drag bunt, that the pitcher was not able to field and then .....
Whew.... Big out...
And your boring. And worse probably a liberal.
Meanwhile, BJ Upton just had another OF error in Atlanta allowing a run to score. 3-1 Mets.
Det pitching his heart out.
If you are so negative about the future games.
I complain, but assume they still win the division, but if want to predict losing season find a group that wants to hear that.
One more.
Eck gotta go
swm, you show up just to attack these guys when the going gets tough. Takes a big person to do that.
Most of us come here to discuss the game not to talk about closing up for the season.
Det digging deep to get out of this!!!! Come on Det... Get this last out!
Get back in thete we need you to concentrate on one mote
And of course this happens....
Only chance lombo had the dive for it.
We couldnt give up those runs.
No difference if 4 or 5 runs so dive.
Pitch track looked like Det got squeezed on Pitch 2...
The poor fielding leftfielder costs the Nats again. Poor jump by Lombo costs 2 more runs.
Limbo's throw was good, but we needed the catch.
Disappointing... Hopefully the Nats can cause some havoc for Lee....
Sigh
Looked like a ball to me.
that hurt! and the Mets are winning game 2 as well, we just can't take advantage of an opportunity but that's how its gone all year. Det has pitched well, just no offense thus far, can it change? sure, why not...SWM, dude, just move on.
So frustrating. I can't fault Lombo, he's a 2B playing LF. 3 run deficit against Cliff Lee. This will be tough.
Well... Lombo has never been any good in the OF...
"MrsB loves the Nats said...
Pitch track looked like Det got squeezed on Pitch 2..."
Suzuki got crossed up and caught it across his body and Det didnt get the call.
Det gave it a really good shot. Surprised Stammen didn't come in to face the righthanders. He had time to be ready, right? Let's home Lee lost his rhythm as FP suggests. Not likely.
Thanks 128....
He wasnt real sloe, but slow enough
Basehit all the way. Lombo tried.
3 hits in a row caused major problem. We cannot give up hits as we get so few.
Mets score 4 unearned runs after BJ's error.6-1 Mets. Have I ever told you guys that I'm glad we didn't sign either of the Uptons?
I think Lombo played that as well as you can expect. MNF.If he dives and the ball gets by him the damage would have been worse. Now, that said, Bernadina probably catches that ball. Infielders trying to play the outfield are killing us.
He has been there a year and half now.
Just has to do it.
We dont score enough to miss plays like that or the two last night.
Sure, just give Cliff Lee all the calls.
Wow that ball was WAY low on Desmond. That was nearly in the dirt. Lee doesn't need help.
That's the first called strike 3 I don't mind. That was ridiculous.
You have to blame Det for tonight. McCatty told all his starters in a meeting, clearly, "Do NOT give up a run or you will lose." Yet for some reason our starters keep giving up a run--the kiss of death.
How hard it is that for our guys to understand? I mean duh, DON'T give up a run!
On the positive side, it feels great getting dominated by a good pitcher, after getting dominated by so, so many mediocre ones. It feels great! It's like a moral victory.
Pitch Track did something funny.... Said Desi got the walk then changed it to a K... What happened?
Danny has struck out 7 times in 13 at bats at Syracuse while batting .153. Tyler Moore batting .167.
Dammit...... We just can't hit a f-ing lick!!! WTF. When are we gonna do something? Bring up the Syracuse team. Try anything. This is just pitiful. It's every night!
The Nats are approaching third place. Can't beat halfway decent teams. This season is probably not what Rizzo or Davey envisioned, but is basically a reflection of the flaws and lack of talent in the team.
I already said a dive probably wouldnt work, and said it would be 5-1, but said no differnce between 4-1 and 5-1. We had to try and stay at 2-1
Seems like Lee got some gifts... Thanks..
I am pretty sure after tonight we will still be in second. Did I miss remember something,?
Cliff Lee gets the Greg Maddux treatment. Thats BS. Call it right blue.
We'll be tied for second if we lose tonight.
Back to Stammen and again no Olendorf.
Idk... Seems like, for the most part, Lee got it going on tonight... As he has most of the season....
Pitch track said strike 3 on Ian was a strike. Is that your complate.
Technically we will be ahead, but we won't be in 3rd like the post implied
Young is a monster...he can hit!!!!
Strike 3 on Ian was not a strike. pitch trak is wrong sometimes. It was low. Pitch FX will show it was low later tonight.
Lombardozzi "played it well," yeah, if he didn't have a noodle arm.
We are suppose to have a good pitching staff but our starters are being out pitched by other team's starters way too often (we know why)
With our hitting this one is over. Call in the dogs, pack up the tents and pee on the fire!
As I said. Young is a qualified Natkiller. David Wright also
Read Mark Z's in game post above at 9:59. Mr. Zuckerman tells the story perfectly regarding the guy playing left field 's play.Like I said earlier, I don't expect Lombo, Kobernus, or Moore to make web gems.I don't expect it because they can't, at least no consistently. Maybe Corey Brown, or Eury Perez wouldn't be able to hit very good, but at least you would have a guy that is a natural outfielder playing. And it's not like Lombo or Kobernus are hitting anyway.
Even that throw just now was on line, it was not a strong throw.
Rangers all time leader in hits.
Hated when I heard he was going to Phillies
Mets leave bases loaded in the 9th
The team has no chance to win the division with Lombardozzi starting. He is maybe slightly above replacement level but I am not too sure. Every time I look out there he is in the starting line up. Zero home runs and inability to beat out grounders. There just is not much you can say.
If the ump is going to call it a strike do what Ian did and sit down.
Good point Nats Lady. They tell us how well Lombo played the ball, COMPLETELY ignoring the lollipop throw he made to second. I am really tiring of the propaganda and selective statistics from our TV crew.
The most honest thing they've said was a month ago, after an excruciating loss, when FP said, "I dunno. Maybe this isn't the year."
Lombo's average is essentially the same as his obp. Sigh.
NL, agree although in his defense we all know he is not an OF...both his throws to home and 2nd were on target but rainbow type throws...would have preferred Bernie there for both plays but understand the match-up issue vs. Lee.
Okay this ump is clearly giving the very low strike, you have to swing at them. That was a ball too, I don't care what Pitch Trak said.
Ump calling low pitch a strike, so pitch track likes it.
Ha, how about that? Kobernus home run.
Not good when you have a light hitting middle infielder playing LF. Doesn't say much for Shark. Why is he on the team if he can't beat out Lombo for LF
Let's face it. No team in the majors can win with hitters like this. Span and Lombardozzi are huge, huge holes in the line up with ZERO power, low averages and low on base percentages and surprisingly both of them are unable to steal or take the extra base.
Congrats Jeff Kobernus!
Well, eat my hat!
Well, how do you like that? Kid got a HR! That is so nice for him. :)
Keep playing light hitting second basemen in the outfield and wonder why the offense stinks and teams run on the Nats
Kobernis ding dong of course no one on again. Is that 8 straight solo homers.
Nicely struck ball by Denard to left field.
span didnt watch Revere did he.
Kobernus homered.... That is hilarious... Good on you kid...
Span looks terrible at plate. Can't blame him totally. He doesn't have a batting coach to help him
Span has provided ZERO of the speed merchant tools. He never bunts for hits; he doesn't beat out grounders; he doesn't steal bases reliably.
most exciting part of the game is the kobernus HR catching guy cam!!
Span should be hitting 7th.
Span does beat out grounders. He has like 11 infield hits already.
Spurs up 53-44. 3rd
Sometimes DP, you gotta let people vent even when they are wrong...
Wow. 11 grounders. Just think how horrible his obp would be otherwise, but I am talking about iffy balls where you are not sure. To my eye, he is not all that fast down the line.
The reason you don't want Storen facing lefties. To easy.
Jeez , Ryan Howard running the bases---LOL.
LaRoche has to get that ball.
Storen finally getting some action....
Shark didn't start tonight because he's left handed. Davey hoped that Lombo batting RH could get a hit or two against the lefty Lee. Was worth a shot.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, our new mop up guy, Drew Storen.
You get the game to within 2 runs and now!
I thought AL was on the kine again those are the ones he has had problem. Where was Werth center field?
I feel bad for Storen... Just a few weeks ago, he was reliable... And now... *sigh*
Platooning guys works when you are Casey Stengal and you have Hank Bauer and Moose Skowron. With Lombo and Bernie, not so much....
Mark's post at 10:11 is spot on... Nats are in prime position to close the gap and they can't...
Braves lost!!!!!
Storen hasn't been reliable since September of 2012.
My prediction of a 500 ball club back in early April seems far too generous.
If storen would pull his head out of his fanny and pitch he would be good. It ain't all about 96 mph. He has great stuff if he'd just frickin pitch. Not THROW
NatsLady said: "Jeez , Ryan Howard running the bases---LOL."
In the words of Maynor G Krebs, "Oh, come now"
128 - but Nats gotta win.... They can't keep letting these opportunities pass them by...
If Drew gets Frandsen out here then great job on getting out 3 with a leadoff man on 3rd.
I feel bad for Det. In the fifth, he was beginning to get hit hard -- but right at people. Time to get the bullpen warm. Did we? Of course not. In the 6th, Det gave ground, exhausted, he pressed on nearly getting out of his jam striking out two -- he was totally gassed. Did we get him help? Nope.
Management is either paralyzed, too old, or just plain dumb.
How about that? Great job Drew.
Wait--the Fillies couldn't get a guy home from 3rd with none out? I thought that was just the Nats?
MrsB, at least you will worst case scenario gain a 1/2 game on the Braves today and best case 1 1/2.
Lets see it Nats!
nice job drew!
Yawn. It is not like Storen was pitching under pressure. The Nats can't get 2 runs in an inning.
Seeing Frandsen bunt with two outs and a runner on third, stands in stark contrast to the utter lack of imagination of the Nationals' offensive attack.
For three months we've waited for hairy-chested guys to hit three-run homers. And what do we have to show for this lack of imagination? Nothing.
You must be fun at parties, William. Do you EVER say anything positive? Lighten up!
Nats have got to bring .300 hitting Corey Brown up -- he's a natural outfielder - and a good one too.
We gotta get little weak Lombo out of the outfield. I thought Rizzo wanted a good defensive team (dumping Morse). Whats all that about? Shark's time is up too --
Nice job giving up a lead off triple? He fought out of it, but the Phillies hardly seemed worried about getting an insurance run....
Good for you Drew.... He gave up the triple but did his job in making sure not giving up a run...
That was a huge run that drew left out there. Ok now boys. Lets go. Get mantle....er....Tracy loose. I got a feelin here.
Matt Harvey seems to be an amazing pitcher, the most talented pitcher in the NL, maybe.....
William sounds no different than 50% of everyone else here tonight. Lay off him why don't you.
My assumption has Harper in left.
We don't have anyone who can strike out 13 in a game.
Zimmerman gets a hanger and pops it up.
Strasburg can't strike out 13 in a game? News to me. Just because he hasn't done it yet this year doesn't mean anything. Wait until Harvey is around for a few years.
I admit it. I am angry at most of the Nats. They seem not to even care. Why do we?
Can the return of Harper and Ramos turn the Nats into a pennant contender? don't think so
128 - I'm keeping my hopes up for 1.5... Of course I will gladly take .5...
Beggars can't be choosy...
Clayton KERSHAW.
Harper sits on the sidelines while the Nats burn....
Need a runner for Tracy
Werth almost golfed that into the seats.
Oh I think they care plenty.
I think they need some young, fiery leadership -- and some smart, sharp coaching. I think the entire coaching staff (except Tarasco) should be shown the door. and the sooner the better
Strasburg can't stay healthy.
Less Platu, why Tarasco? Just curious. Is there something special about him different from the rest of the coaching staff?
You make seem mild, you are so negative.
Desmond with the clutch contact.
We are now 2 under .500 -- and more to follow. Baseball is a funny game.
And that is why I hate first pitch swinging....
I blame this one on the umps. If we had a few more balks, we would have been right there.
Strasburg not being able to stay healthy is a myth. He's had two injuries-Tommy John and a lat injury that many pitchers get. He's not injury prone.
And we have no idea how healthy Harvey is or isn't, he's been around for a few months.
At least Ian swung, but a dinky grounder to third is not quite going to get it done.
Looking on the bright side, we picked up half a game today without lifting a finger.
When I read that Tarasco was putting in the hours trying to teach Span how to steal bases (back in late April/early May) and by the fact that coaching first base, you don't get a chance to mess up -- I see mistakes being made by every other coach.
Idk why some of y'all even try...
Runs 3 and 4 for the Philkies the difference. We know when they scored
"Hey Eck, Davey n Riz wanna see you in the office."
"W-w-w why ?"
"I don't know, but they said to bring your clipboard with you."
I hope you are right about Strasburg, but I seem to recall him coming out of two different games this year for minor injuries and missing a couple of months and he wasn't healthy enough last year to even pitch relief in the post-season. His velocity is down from three years ago and he still seems to be a decent pitcher but probably no Matt Harvery.
Why does Span need to learn how to steal bases after six years in the majors?
Less Platu said...

---------------/------////////
Check your facts before posting something so ignorant. Corey is hitting ,245 and is striking out a ton, as in 50 K's in 147 AB's
I'd like his OF skills, but he is struggling big time at the plate.
Zimmerman, Desmond, ALR and Span have all been pathetic lately. Rendon is the only one playing at all and no one has any idea when Harper will be back.
ok, Les, now you are just annoying (AGAIN), my kid plays "girls" soccer and you know what, i am sure she and all of her teammates are much tougher than you...go away...in your case "Les" is not more, move on.
I think Bernadina is out of minor league options.
You were the one that said Brown was hitting.300
I made no mention of Bernadina. Go back under your rock.
Span looks hurt at the plate. He looks like he is 40 years old. That little flair he hit to left his last time up was weak as a kitten. you gotta sit him down. Lets see what the kid in Harrisburg has. Or Brown. And Haren all of a sudden gets a sore arm and goes on the DL. Its time to start makin some moves, cause the guys we got here ain't getting it done. And like FP was saying, this division is up for grabs
