Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER John Lannan tries to pitch the Nationals to a rare win at Citizens Bank Park. |
Yes, they posted a winning record at Citizens Bank Park last season, thanks entirely to a four-game September sweep after Philadelphia had already clinched the NL East. Over the last six seasons combined, though, the Nats are 16-33 here, 36-67 overall against the Phillies. They've lost four straight here entering tonight's game.
Which puts the pressure squarely on John Lannan's shoulders. The problem: Lannan is 1-5 with a 7.06 ERA in seven career starts in this ballpark, the lone victory coming last year. He'll need to overcome that demon if he's going to help his team get back on track tonight.
Lannan won't have one regular behind him in the field. Danny Espinosa is not in the Nationals lineup, replaced by Steve Lombardozzi. We'll have to find out whether this is related to his lingering shoulder injury or something else.
Updates to come...

7:09 p.m. -- We are underway. There was some rain earlier, and Nats batting practice was canceled, but it cleared out and we're able to get this one start on time.
7:14 p.m. -- Well, that didn't take long. Six pitches into the game, the Nats already hold a 2-0 lead. Jayson Werth led off with a walk. Bryce Harper then destroyed Kyle Kendrick's first pitch into the left-center field bleachers for his 20th homer of the season. Just an absolute bomb from the rookie. He's now four behind Tony Conigliaro for the all-time record by a teenager. He's also now scored 93 runs, moving a step closer to becoming only the second teenager ever to score 100 times in a season: Buddy Lewis of the 1936 Senators.
7:21 p.m. -- John Lannan couldn't have drawn up a first inning any better than that. He got three groundball outs, needing only 11 pitches to do it. Obviously there's a long way to go in this one, but that's as encouraging a first inning as the Nationals could have asked for. They lead 2-0.
7:37 p.m. -- So, uh, it appears the Nationals showed up to play today. They're already leading 5-0 after both Ian Desmond and Kurt Suzuki belted homers off Kendrick in the top of the second. If you've lost track, that was three of the Nats' first eight batters going yard tonight. Throw it Harper's stolen base later in the inning, and he's now the first teenager ever to hit 17 homers and steal 17 bases. Quite a night so far for the boys in the curly W caps. They lead 5-0 as we go to the bottom of the second.
7:56 p.m. -- If you took the under in Kendrick lasting 2 1/3 innings tonight ... you win! Charlie Manuel takes the ball from his starter after he walked LaRoche and gave up a single to Morse to open the third. So B.J. Rosenberg is the first member of Johnny Wholestaff to appear out of the Phillies bullpen tonight. It's still 5-0 in the middle of the third.
8:08 p.m. -- Suzuki, apparently forgetting his team was up five runs, made a cardinal sin in the bottom of the third and tried to throw out the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt attempt. His throw wound up sailing into left field, and that allowed the Phillies' first run of the night to score. Lannan then got himself in a big-time jam, loading the bases with one out and the heart of the Phillies lineup at the plate. But he fired off five straight breaking balls to Ryan Howard and struck him out, then fielded a comebacker off his leg to get Carlos Ruiz and snuff out the rally. It's now 5-1 Nats after three.
8:29 p.m. -- That was, well, that was pretty ugly. Two outs, bottom of the fourth, nobody on. Kevin Frandsen sent a flyball to deep center field and Harper misjudged it, letting the ball sail over his head. Frandsen tried to stretch it into a triple, and Harper's throw had him dead to rights at third, except Zimmerman couldn't hold onto the ball on the tag. Moments later, Rosenberg recorded his first career hit and RBI with a little dribbler up the middle that neither Desmond nor Lombardozzi could corral. Looks like Desmond should've called off his second baseman there. So after all that, the lead is now 5-2 heading to the fifth.
8:38 p.m. -- Meanwhile, the Braves lead the Marlins 2-0 in the fifth.
8:52 p.m. -- Remember how the Nats stormed out of the gates and ambushed Kendrick? Well, they haven't exactly kept up the pressure. The Phillies bullpen has yet to allow a hit in four innings of work. Where have we seen this before? Still 5-2 in the middle of the sixth.
9:03 p.m. -- Hmm, kind of an early appearance by Captain Hook. Davey Johnson came out to take the ball from Lannan with one out and one on in the sixth. In came Ryan Mattheus and Danny Espinosa as part of a double-switch. Guess Davey knew what he was doing because Mattheus immediately induced a 5-4-3 double play, with Espinosa making a nice turn at second, to end the inning. So Lannan's final line is: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 82 pitches, 47 strikes. He's in line to improve to 4-0 this year and earn his second career win at Citizens Bank Park if the Nats bullpen can protect a 5-2 lead.
9:13 p.m. -- So, the Nats have now faced the Phillies bullpen for a total of nine innings in this series. And they've produced a total of, hmm, let me see, oh yes ... ONE hit against them. Wasn't that supposed to be the weak link of that team? Still 5-2 at the stretch.
9:22 p.m. -- Jimmy Rollins tags a 3-1 pitch from Ryan Mattheus into the right-field bleachers. That makes it a 5-3 game as the seventh inning comes to an end. The Nats might want to think about an insurance run or two.
9:31 p.m. -- Well, at least they got a hit finally. Zim crushed a ball off the left-field wall, yet was held to a single. We go to the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Clippard is in. Utley, Howard and Ruiz are due up. Hold your breath, folks.
9:52 p.m. -- Everybody out there still breathing? Good. Clippard certainly left a few of you blue in the face. He gave up a lead off double, issued a wild pitch, a walk, a sac fly that was five feet short of leaving the park, a base hit that put the tying run on third base ... and then struck out Frandsen to end the eighth with the Nats still leading 5-4. The Braves just won, by the way, 3-0. So the Nats need to win to keep the lead at 4 games and reduce the magic number to 4.
10:14 p.m. -- Wow, some high drama in the top of the ninth. With two on and two out, Werth stepped to the plate to some rousing boos from the crowd. Why? Because earlier he picked up a foul ball and faked a throw into the stands, then tossed it into the dugout instead. So what happened next? Well, Justin DeFratus buzzed him with a high-and-tight fastball, riling up the crowd even more. Werth, though, got the last laugh, delivering a two-run single up the middle. He clapped his hands with authority as the Nats took a 7-4 lead. Bryce Harper's triple then made it 8-4 and gave Drew Storen some serious breathing room.
10:30 p.m. -- It's over. The Nats win 8-4 and exorcise a few demons in the process. They still lead the Braves by 4 games with 7 to play. The magic number is down to 4.

If I knew how to post it, I would post a link from yesterrday's Wall Street Journal. They did a study of what announcing teams were most in the tank for the home team. White Sox ranked first. We ranked ninth the NY teams were at the bottom...too. Ich risk of offending people, apparently, I like that these busy root for our guys. I think it helps grow fans, becaue it makes them speak about little things they notice in our guys.
In other news, our failure to make hay when we get to the bullpen is just odd. I get the September call up thing but still.
No lead safe in CBP...the ball flies...This will still be a nail biter..Buckle Up
Agreed, Eddie, Lombo very doubtful to make that turn and throw. I agree with sec222 about Lannan having a great start. I mean really, he's had what, 4 starts this year, and holds the Phillies to 2 runs?
Lannan's defense helped him and hurt him. Suzuki error plus the Bryce mis-read in CF cost him an earned run.
BTW.. I take back all the horrible nasty curses I said at John during the Dodgers start (the folks in the 200's heard them). That was quite a start for John, since Zuk brain farted the first run, and that 2nd run shouldn't have scored either.
Great job by Lannan, only the 1 walk, forced the Phils to earn their way on, and kept it in the park...That's outstanding against this lineup in that Park
Swift it is hard to believe that Phils are only 500 at home
Marlins utterly useless.
I'm just never going to get used to that Frankenstein Throw from Ryan...Just so strange looking from such a great player
This is a story of again seeing the Nats offense get some runs then sleep the rest of the game.
Should've blown this open against the Phools.
Sec 222
Calling that "great" is the soft bigotry of low expectations (to quote a former major league managing partner/fan boy). Lannan put men on base in 4 of 6 innings. Yes, the defense let him down a few times, but that's the risk you take when you're a pitcher who can't notch many Ks and have to rely more heavily on the defense behind you. If he wasn't starting to walk the tightrope again in the 6th (with that lead-off walk), Davey might have left him in.
So, not great, but good--certainly good enough for what the Nats needed.
20.1 Innings with no run vs. their bullpen.
this series 9 IP 1 hit 9
0 Uns What is the problem.
cmon boys hang on please.

Marlins utterly useless.
imagine all the stories that will come out once the season is over, you talk about a blood letting in Miami, it will be like the night Michael gave the order to whack Johnny Olu and Hyman Roth, lol
I think I may have been on vacation that week JoeS, but I feel your pain. Let me be clear -- I don't object to homerism. Virtually all team employed TV and radio announcers are homers. Just don't insult my intelligence by making it sound like our players can do no wrong. To listen to Carp and FP, every routine play by Zim is a webgem, every double play turned by Espi couldn't be made by any other second baseman. And ALR as MVP? He might not even be the MVP of this team (I'd give that honor to Desi.)
Thank Joe West for that HR to Jimmy Rollins. Misses on the 3 pitch which was clearly a strike.
you cant just score in first innings and shut it down, these guys will come back.
Phils are a lot better than .500 since they got all their guys healthy...
Seamhead, Ray is a joy compared to that pet rock Bordick on the other MASN channel.
Swift.... good point
Our 3 4 5 have not n
been good enough.
Also ump forces one right over the middle.
Also ee were in position to blow ame wide ipen. Up 5-0 Men on first and secon mo outs. And Ian needed just a hit but instead all the positive mo dies with a double play.
I'd actually be in favor of some small ball the next couple ABs...Need to push across at least one more run somehow
222 whoever administers the cortisone shots is our MVP.
The Nats hit that damn railing again!! Just like ALR
two run lead wont do it against the Phils. Not playing in that softball field. I hope Clipp not coming in. Looks like he is. Good night. Should have been a HR DAMN!!!
On the Braves telecast, they are reporting that the Nats T-shirts saying NL East Champs are now available. And they are taking great offense. Anyone seen such T-shirts?
Ardggg no homer instead a single. come on man
Zim smoked that ball. That's like a Fenway single.
SWM.. Deep breathes buddy, deep breathes...or Bourbon and Maalox.
Isnt Filthadelphia the HOME of the chain link fence?
Hoping Morse can find his power stroke right now!
This team just not doing it at crunch time. Gotta flip over to the Truman Show on AMC. TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nervous.
Get runs. We look pitifu hitting .shkw me he hitters I saw in first two innings. Why did those guys quit?
A little worried about Clippard against the 2 lefties.
Marlins are going down meekly. 3-0, bottom of 8th.
Clippard comes in with Utley and Howard up? Guess he really is the 8th inning guy
Well, what say you fellow Insiders? Clippard in the 8th. Don't forget to breathe.
Before everyone gets all excited and thinks Clip has been demoted, this is exactly the kind of matchup move that Davey said he'd do -- Clip's changeup is effective against lefties and Utley and Howard are up this inning.
Both double play balls were hit hard...It's not like they can steer it off the bat...All any hitter can do is try to hit the ball hard
Bourbon time
Lucky that pitch stayed in the Park...belt high FB down the middle...Yikes!
man I hate that face Utley makes everytime he does something.
OMG.. I am going to hyperventilate.. Someone get me the bourbon and Maalox
Do I have to start my Morse rant again? His hand won't heal by grounding out every time. Poor choice Davey. Sit him down.
Eagle -- 8th inning guy regardless of matchups? VERY nervous....
Utely was 1-9 v. Clipp and Howard is now 2-11...Davey's not making this up as he goes
watch for utley stealing 3rd
I agree 135. If I complain about morse he always gets a hit...so here we go :-)
Ugh..Another free 90 feet and a 3-0 count
You have to bring in Burnett here.
DJ looks mad.
Come on Clip. I really don't want to eat any more crow. A DP ball would be awfully nice here.
I guess that was a pitch around? But the lead run is now at the plate...Gulp
I can't watch....s$&@@
This is playoff baseball. Don't need to worry about hurting feelings with a quick hook.
Tyler, you breathe. Come on,man!
This just can't continue with Tyler Clippard.
You're right Gonat, Clipp without his good change-up is just a sitting duck out there...
WHY is clippard in there. Ughhhh gonna be another terrible loss. Need a DP.
I learn really dislike Clippard. He cant do anything Davey doesnt love.
Maloox taken now
I had to turn away from watching Clippard. Just couldn't take it.
Please take him out
Needed that ball to be up. That reminds me of Kemp.
Lead down to 1
clippard has nothing left for the year.
MY GOODNESS PPPPPPPplease
Take him out.
take him out
Clippard shouldn't even be on the post-season squad.
Major stress. Down to a one run game. Come on Clip, close out this inning!
Hard to believe Burnett is only now getting warmed up.
This is Henry rodriquez stuff. Clippard is absolutely done. Once again Shame on Davey What is he thinking? I am really getting sick of this crap.
Out Plz! Ahhhh!!!
Here comes a wild pitch....
I am probably madder at Davey than. Cluppard has been awful in September yet he puts him where he can hurt us. This is not June's Clippard
Really finding it difficult to understand davey in this inning
It is just like Henry.
Close to a home run.
25 pitches in 1 inning!
Got him! On to the ninth. Some insurance please Nats!
Ok, breathe Haha
DAVEY DAVEY DAVEY. WHY OH WHY OH WHY
Blood pressure meds anyone?
go to be out, but this was a bad inning.
(Exhales)
Ok, breathe in, breathe out. Thank you Clipp. You're not completely done yet.
We need DRUUUUU Right Now!
Maybe the worse inning ever with only one run scored. It was very close to being a 2 homer inning for the Phils.
Time for the hitters to go back to work for the Nats. How many games have we had where the team gets off to a nice lead and then goes quiet.
the lack of timely hitting ticks me off as much as the bullpen. COME ON
Guys And Gals, Davey needs Clippard to get his confidence back. He's going to kill half of us trying, though.
All right, please score an insurance run here.
Almost a 30 pitch inning! If his arm is worn out, that is why. Unfortunately, he let so many guys bat that we have to go through some of their core guys again.
Well, either Storen gets it done or he doesn't. If Storen can't be like last yet, this isn't happening anyway.
That was just fine. We are stil, ahead. Desmond, Tracy, Zuke...I like our chances to get another run here,
Man the Braves are killing me.
Get Him On, Get Him Over, Get Him IN
Kimbrel is beyond nasty. He struck out four Marlins in the top of the 9th. One of them reached first when McCann couldn't corral the slider that rang up the batter. Amazing. His K/9 is over 16!!
Braves are on fire. Nothing the Nats can do about that though...the Nationals just need to take care of things on their end and it won't matter what the Braves do.
Any hit to the outfield....
No doubt, Kimbrel is the best pitcher I've seen all year...They reported some of his Stats on MLB radio today..He's doing things NOBODY has ever done...almost 17 K's per 9! Hasn't given up 2 hits in 1 inning all year!
When is the last time chad tracy did anything?
Too bad the Braves are wasting him as a reliever.
Damn Tracy just pull the ball. Why hit to shortstop. That is something stupid like Stairs would have done
The Phils are trying pretty hard for a team that has no chance to make the post-season.
This is agonizing. We are going to see what the Nats are made of here.
This is the slowest pitcher I have ever seen.
We'll take it!!!
I take it back. Harper would have scored on that.
Danny is a lousy bunter, but I really want to see a squeeze here...Braves did it tonight...THis is a HUGE run
How about a sack FLY? Danny Espi OH NO sa coming up.
C'mon Danny put the ball in play... and not on the ground to a middle infielder
my first born child for a wild pitch
Just a Sac Fly PLEASE!
Espinosa earn your pay
After all those 100 loss seasons and meaningless September games...This is Awesome!!
Yeah Werth!
HAHAHA are you kidding Swift.\? Im ready to dial 911
Way to go Espinosa.
At least Danny knows why Davey is benching him
Can't even make contact when we need to
Probably not a good move by Werth to wake up the crowd like that...But funny
Espinoda really is clueless swing at strikes. When are demand he qiit swinging at balls. He is not helping team striking so much
Werth
Ha!!! F u Philly
Haha...Not too shabby...BOO This!
SWEEETTTT!! I love Jayson!
God you know Werth is loving it
AHHHHHH HAHHHHHHHHH MAN I love sticking it to the PHILTHY FANS. FINISH IT BOYS.
Screw the Doom! Way to go Jayson!
That was the best moment of the season!
Goood for you, Jayson!!!!! I hate the filthy fans, cheering when the pitch is up and in and almost hits him. They are sickos.
I'm bitter on Espinoza n morse...not a fan
I went bathroom. What did werth do to incite the crowd?
And it's not even the playoffs yet! Greatest game ever invented...
Take THAT, you obnoxious blowhards!
And break in a salad once in awhile.
Gonat at 4:03, you called it on Werth.
Morse is Mr. Hit into a Double Play, lately, but I am not bitter. I am sure he is trying.
Fake threw ball to crowd
THIS is the moment he's been waiting for ever since May.
THIS is what a seasoned vet does in the white heat of a pennant race.
Jayson has just cemented his leadership of this team.
Can you even imagine how good that felt for Jayson?
Werth picked up a foul ball, faked throwing to a fan, and then tossed in the dugout...
Only if we hold on in the 9th willie o
Jayson woke up fans and himself.
Espi hit the b
all.
Way too many Ks and most on pitches iut of the zone tha
t makes it worse
Bout time for Bryce to figure out Bastardo.
That is great stuff with Werth not throwing the ball to some kids who are Phillies fans and then putting it in their faces.
Listening. Wish i could have seen that single, but sure heard the crowd get silenced.
Heh heh
AWesome thanks swift. Bunt here
Good job Uncle Bryyce
As, I said, about time Harper figured out Bastardo... :) :) :)
All you people who criticize Harper and say he is disappointing--take that!
AH yes, another Prudential Insurance Run...Good call NatsLady, Bryce just figured out that Bastardo...
Oh that was sweet. Werth and Harper, the two guys with the most reason to stick to Philly. Love it!!
There went Storen's save.
Lannan 4-0 for the Nats and has arguably won the 3 most important games of the season. I seem to recall some people saying we had no chance to win today.
SWEEEEEEEEEEEET Still nervous for the ninth in this little league park.
NatsLady being psychic! Okay 4 run lead for DRUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
Awesome inning! Great job Desi, Suzuki, Werth and Bryce! (especially Werth!)
Middle against pen is still a concern...but great form for post season with that 9th
How great to have Werth and Harp get right in the faces of these repulsive Phans!
I think with Gio against rookie Cloyd we have a fair-to-middling' chance to get that # down to 3 by Friday.
Werth may learn a few new words when he gets out to RF...They'll be booing him like he's Santa...nothing like Phila
That hit by Jayson was my single most favorite hit of the season. So far.
Werth did the same thing earlier when he caught the final out in an inning in RF. He faked like he was going to throw it to the OF stands, smiled at them, and then ran in with the ball. In your face, philth!
The Legion of Doom can go back to hiding under their couches.
Oh Gonat! You poked! Haha
I am still here.
Stores has his nasty back
Breathing better and it couldn't happen better with Jayson slamming the dagger in the 9th.
DRUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!
Werth is great! Talk about poking the hornet's nest! And while he's batting, you can hear some Philly fan in the background, behind home plate screaming, "You can't do THAT to a kid." Jeez it sounded like a Lenny Bruce Fr. Flotsky routine. I think Werth has a little of the younger Clint Eastwood in him. How sweet to see him rip that single and then score on Bryce's triple. Nervous as we are, no one wants to run into the Nats in the post season.
Phillies radio announcers on 1210 AM saying "big deal, if a team is as bad as the Nats for 7 years straight, and they get the first pick every year, they should have some talent"--sour grapes, anyone? The Phillies are one of the worst franchises of all time, so maybe it is sour grapes and a pot call at the same time....
Clip taught Drew his changeup. (I read that, I didn't just make it up).
Druuuu is back!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
YES! Magic number is 4!
Phillies' starter tonight had been pitching great and that is why they left him in for so long.
Ok, so the Magic Number is 4 with 7 left. And Gio is on the mound tomorrow. Are we feeling better now.
We got this folks. Yes!!
Harper sets the National League record for home runs in one season by a teenager.
I don't care what you say, this one's on Davey.Seriousy, they're killing us with all of this drama. I love it!
Heart rate starting to return to normal. Ish.
I've been busy, did I miss anything?
Watched from elsewhere, great game. FP is right, you gotta love this, all of it.
