Associated Press photo Stephen Strasburg threw six innings last night to raise his total to 145 1/3. |
"I talked a little bit about it with [general manager Mike Rizzo," Johnson said prior to the Nationals' series finale against the Braves. "We kind of worked it out, and I think it came out with off-days we would need another starter for, I think, two starts. I think it was two starts, maybe three. I thought it was two."
What exactly does that mean? It seems to suggest Strasburg will make either four or five more starts this season. He's slated to pitch Tuesday in Miami, then lines up to start Sept. 2 against the Cardinals, Sept. 7 against the Marlins and Sept. 12 in New York.
It would then be a question of whether the Nationals will let the right-hander make one final start at home, likely Sept. 19 against the Dodgers.

Save his arm. We'll have a full year of him next year.
Don't discount the possibility of them going to some form of six man rotation including Lannan and Stras for September. That would let them limit JZ's and Det's innings too. Also, Lannan can't sit around for half of Sept before he makes a start if they expect him to be effective.
Good.. Good..
pRAA, I had the same thought about Lannan -- how to keep him pitching and ready when the AAA team stops in September. I guess we have to stay tuned. Like I'd even THINK about looking away...
While I am 100% behind the shutdown if there is medical proof that he needs the rest, I say let him pitch, there are no guarantees in life, no guarantee we will be this close to a championship for the next 10 years, and no guarantees that the shutdown will make Stras less injury prone going forward, you play to win championships and nothing else.....with Stras we are the odds on favorites, without him regardless of what everybody wants to believe we 're not.
I know this is not the popular opinion of most on this blog, so have at it.
This is funny as MLB Network just was saying 2 or 3 more starts.

That seems like a good possibility.
Didn't the Nats try some tandem starts with Peacock and Milone? I don't think it went well as they aren't veterans but do you think they try that with Maya and Duke.
Exposed, we have had it already. Right up to here. We're done.
Don't discount off days and skipped starts.
Let the kid pitch. It amazes me nats are 30 over with all these distractions about stars.
Like the Z-Man said, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

To clarify, the zzzzzzzzzzzzzz related to the idea of revisiting the shutdown debate with ExposedinDC. :-)
Not that it's an important consideration, but finishing the season against the Dodgers would provide some nice symetry, since his first post-surgery MLB action was against the Dodgers here last September.
