US Presswire file photo The Nationals need to win tonight at Marlins Park to avoid a six-game losing streak. |
No changes to Davey Johnson's lineup. He'll stick with the exact same starting eight that couldn't score a run off Ricky Nolasco last night, hoping these guys have more success against 21-year-old right-hander Jacob Turner (making his eighth career start).
Turner hails from St. Louis, as does the Nationals' starter tonight: Ross Detwiler. The 26-year-old left-hander was on the mound when this losing streak began Thursday night against the Braves, so it would perhaps be fitting if he was the guy to put and end to the streak.
As you know, I'm not in Miami. Please enjoy the conversation as always, and I'll be back at the park tomorrow night for the start of the Nats' 11-game homestand...

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 279 Newer› Newest»Let's hope the Nats can keep Turner pitching from the stretch most of the night. Singles, not fly balls. Keep runners on base, keep pressure on Miami pitching.
Come on, Ross and Nats. Win one for Brian on his birthday. :-)
N1a,
I don't think Mark is a Nats fan ... :)
Per Amanda, looks like there was a team meeting. Hopefully, it was just relax...
Amanda Comak@acomak
The #nats are holding a team meeting today. Sounds like it was coaches/manager called, not called by players. No one seemed alarmed.
One veteran player said he saw it as a really good thing, good to come together every now and then and get everyone on the same page.
Davey is not a huge fan of team meetings but he picks his spots. Held one in Pittsburgh in May.

Wonk--you don't think Stras felt the pressure when he saw the Nats flubbed around and didn't score in the top of the first?
No, I don't. Teams are usually (more than 50% of the time) scoreless in the first inning.
But, if he _was_ effected by it, well, then, he didn't "step up."
1A.. agree.. a Nat's win for Brian's Birthday.
Plus Cookies and Cake (or mashed bananas)
Mark is neutral but maybe we can get to Brian. :-)
I don't think Mark is a Nats fan ... :)
If nothing else, maybe on home games Brian can root for the bottom of the 9th to be canceled at Nats Park so his dad gets home earlier. :-)
Maybe mashed banana cake? hmmm...I may need to rethink that one.

Great! I was just thinking that this was the perfect time to call one.
And I was imagining Davey saying something along the lines of:
Well, we didn't think we would coast to the playoffs, right? So, let's just get back to basics. Let's see some patience at the plate, some quality at bats. You guys are good, so all you need to do is to play within yourselves, keep the focus, and trust your teammates.
The meeting might have been to convey the points that Rizzo during the "fracas" which Davey alluded to when he said they were "valid and taken to heart"?
I am rooting for Ross to see his opportunity to pitch the dickens out of the Fish. And may the team meeting have woken up a few of our bats.
GYFNG! Happy Birthday, Brian Baby!
Time to get the act together and start inning at least 5 in row.
Manassas,
How about we win 1 in a row?
Yes JD, let's take it one day at a time, and the good lord willing.....
Jacob Turner. Another new guy pitching against our impotent lineup. This is going to be ANOTHER one of those times when a rookie (eighth career start) pitches like Cy Young against us. We are on the road to at least 10 losses in a row. Hopefully, one of our stoppers will prevent that from happening. But, WE NEED BATS!! This is the pits.
Just keep grinding 'em out and maybe we can help out the ballclub. :-)

I take them One at a time. I also assume I will win every one of them.
Well, at least they still have a sense of humor..
James Wagner@JamesWagnerWP
Davey on why he called meeting: "I was watching all those speeches last night on the Republican Conv. & I said maybe I outta give a speech"
Rabbit cmon. Lets wait until at least the 3rd to start complaining. I would however, have put in some differnt guys tonight. Lombo especially.
Lets go NATS. PLEEEEEEEASE don't force me to turn on the Redskins game tonight.
Maybe he oughta look up spellings before Tweetering. :-)
maybe I outta give a speech
What are these potatoes you speak of watching, SWN? Speaking of which, gotta go make dinner.
Would be nice if Werth (who has the WS experience) would hold a players only meeting.
Natsfan1a, very funny. I hope it was a joke and not a politically correct lecture. I prefer mashed BTW
I got a good feeling tonight, I think Ozzie and his team are in for a long night
SWM.. definitley a joke (1a doesn't no pointy ball sport). I like twice baked with lots of cheese.
Nats have not been swept in a two series trip since 2009. GYFNG
So, did Davey's speech include the word "lollygagging"? Given the lack of hustle on the bases and the pitchers' lack of focus with men on base, it might have been appropriate.
Come on batters. new night. lets kick a$$
Zzzzzzzzzz............
Here is Amanda's report on the team meeting
Good Night Rabbit.. Sweet Dreams.
Harper is a sucker for the breaker.
Team meeting must not have said score in the first.
.165 BA leadoff man for Fish.
No Harp, alligator arms.
sigh... here we go again...
Is Det going to Torre on that call? That is an E8
Yea Davey sure knows how to keep em lose and focused.....These guys need kick in Ass in the worst way. They are embarrassing to watch and telling jokes in a team meeting is not getting it done!
Detwiler threw 6. extra pitches based on Harps blunder.
So it's a positive half inning. The Fish didn't score.
Good on Det for not losing his cool. Kid is growing up. :)
that is true...he used to make faces...roll eyes and get lite up after stuff like that.
NatsLady, sigh of relief on Reyes liner.
Harper is hurting the team big time while Bernadina rots on the bench. Who is responsible--Davey or Rizzo? This is just as painful as watching H-Rod trying to pitch.
Who has the scouting report on this kid Turner? I know he was a top prospect for the Tigers, but that's it.
I figured the team meeting stressed taking pitches. that is why of 4 k in 2 innings 3 were looking.
The way the Nats are hitting, they are going to make even a marginal pitcher look like Sandy Koufax.
Davey to team: I'm so happy we had this little chat. Now can someone, anyone, on this team please get a HIT?
MicheleS, throws fastball, slider and curve and very inconsistent.
That K pitch to Morse when he's hot is a hard line drive.
Thanks Ghost. At least Ian made contact :-)
Liking the ground ball outs by Ross!
MicheleS, he will miss locations and that's where you have to beat him.
Pads lead 2-0 bottom of the 4th
PADRES score 2. One with a double One with a grounder
Manassas.. I like Diet Dr Pepper...
This team still needs a leader. It is not Zimm that is for sure. Werth...not a chance...Ian D is the only one close to any leadership qualities. He should get in the face of Morse and Adam and Werth and tell them stop taking fastballs right down the middle. Have some fight and get mad about getting shown up by a rookie pitcher with 5 starts and a 5+ era!
Davey is missing the boat here. This team is full of wimps who want to be told it is all OK to lose.
Marlins should take the field next inning with just the pitcher, catcher, and first baseman, apparently that's all they need...
My goodness the first time through line up was Warhol. Only Desmond hit the ball like a hitter. The third inning 3 broken bats to the pitcher.
Swift and a LF when Desi comes up
I just woke up. So, how we doin'? Did we get any hits yet???? Zzzzzzzzzzzz..
Error allows braves to score unearned run
Love that high K by Ross.
JayB.. How do you know that isn't happening? Who knows what goes on behind closed doors?
Pleeeeze no more 3-2 counts to opposing pitchers...
In the losing streak Nats now have 47 strike outs and 6 walks....and 3 of the walks were in 1 game...
Chopper dropped an easy pop up. man on second 2 out
It's time people. Repeat after me:
JINX JINX JINX JINX JINX!!!!!!
No way was that a double off of Harps glove. I have zero hits in my cranial scorebook.
MicheleS!!!!
Michele is a little spooky....Lol
I wish I could conjure up Lotto numbers. I would by a Winnebago and follow the Nats around.
Michele, I hope you always use your powers for good...
FINALY!!!!!!
Yup, Always for good as you can see by BAM BAM's HR!!!
Mistake pitch MicheleS!
I just threw confetti at my TV...time to Celebrate!!
RABBIT WAKE UP YOU ARE MISSING THE HITS!!!!
Nats score 2 Padres score 2
Oh Michele and Jack...must you poke? Haha! They'll be back soon enough...Last night, one of them actually predicted the team would fold and move away (again)..
Bryce Harper rules. Anyone who disagrees, drools....
BEAST!!!! HOW AWESOME
Beast Mode...How the hell is that not a HR??!
What is the definition of a triple?
An extra base hit where La Roche is able to score from first....
Swift, I actually like Rabbit, I take His/Her/Its commentary more as snark.
Some days your balls just go where you want them to....
Starting to look like the 2012 Nats again...
Padres 4-1 after 5
I remember these guys. Team meeting every day till Octoberr whatevereth. That's my advice.
And just remember, the Marlins and the Phils are the favorites to win the NL East this year....
Indeed, now this is the Nats we've grown used to seeing this year.
4-0 inning still not over.
Detwiler is looking very sharp as well
5 Hitters woke up.we want more next inning. go Nats. go Padres.
det time to stop them after we scored
Hey, the Redskins are on tonight, too!
Huh....Huh....Whaa Happened!!! Four hits!? Oh, FOUR RUNS!!!!! ALL RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..
You remind me of my father, Rabbit....
Everybody complains about the so-called trolls, so I came on specifically to cheer our big lead and nobody is bothering to post, so maybe me thinks people on here doth protest too much and I am signing out.
Padres just escaped bases loaded.
Stoltz gets out of bases loaded jam 4·~1 bottom 6th
AMBUSH!!!!
BAM BAM hit ball FAR!
3-0 HARP AMBUSH!!!!
There goes Harper "hurting the team" again...Lol
Wowza! more of that, Bam Bam.
I wonder what Ozzie is thinking right now?
MicheleS, coincidence his initials are BAMH
You can see how much quite Harper's body was on both hr swings tonight. Hope he can keep it up for another 2 months or do.
That's "quieter" not quite...
Swift, remind me again, is it the Region of BAM?
Sorry I'm late. Gloom and doom is here when things are good. BRYCE. It's still going baby. Lotta fast balls on 1st pitch. Wack em baby
Bryce Harper Rules
Finished work, turned on the game, and Werth starts off the 4th, then BamBam goes big!
Get a follow up phone call, come back, Harper up (wait, what inning is this? Fifth?!? How...) BAM dang BAM.
Tempted to go do something else for 15 minutes then come back and see if he can hit three in a row. :-)
5-0 lead. I hope Davey keeps a close eye on Det.
Bryce with a really nice catch there. Nice to see him turn his day around.
Bryce Harper Rules
Exhale. At least for a while.
Tommy Hansen out for the Barves.
Ghost, The Legion of BAMH for sure tonight.
Exhale. At least for a while.
An Austin Kearns sighting.
I will mention it now, Det pitching on 2 extra days of rest.
Isn't it nice to see Ross grinning like that?
Bryce has 14 HRS at 19. Mickey Mantle 13 at 19. how nice is that.
Griffey Jr. at 16, Ott at 19, both are doable.
Detwiller= Stopper
William, thanks for that! That is rare company!
5-1 lead and you are issuing freebies to the leadoff man?
No free passes. make them earn everything
Interesting little nugget:
Peter Gammons@pgammo
Strasburg's 150 1/3 IP are 15 more than The Great Nolan Ryan threw before age 24
And nice work, those who often post when things are not going well. It's good to see you all when things are going well. Balance is good. I don't post much, but read almost all the posts. Back to lurk mode.
GYFNG. Bam-Bam

Since you wrote that 30 minutes ago, I would say he gave him a lot of rope.
Ghost/Gonat.. At least the bullpen is up.
and now we have a Lombo sighting
I hate to say, not a good finish to his night. Went from a gem to a so-so night because of that leadoff walk.
What took them so long. walking a lefty .201 average guy was enough for me. we can't afford to give this away. soon as Eskimo got the hit the switch should have happened. bad managing this time
MicheleS, his pitches were up in the 5th. After the leadoff walk I would have pulled him.
Not happy with Davey giving them an opening.
The rabbit is going back in his bunny hole for a few days. Hope we win. See ya Sunday.
Gee, I hope we hold onto this game!
I HEART Ryan Matheus!
Ghost. I think that is all part of Davey's plan to let the Pitcher learn how to work out of jams and make adjustments. He did it with the Mets, he is doing it with the Nats. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (looking at you Stras)
Sweet! Pads up 6-1
Umm.. anyone warming up yet?
Or a beer.
Can not lose this game. This would just be devastating
Venters is getting hit. 8-1 Pads
At least if we blow this we can blame the pitching and not the bats. BTW even though braves lose we need a win
SWM.. we always need wins. Barves losing is just icing on the cake
We're on pins and needles in the 7th inning of a game on Aug 29!! Imagine how great October is going to be...
Got to love this game...
Agree Michele. Getting more than a little nervous.
It's just 1 of 162 SWM....no matter what happens tonight the Nats will have to play well in Sept to make the post-season...
So.. is it DRUUUUU or Sean for the 8th?
Your right swift. I just sleep better when we win. Haha. Burnette and clip should be fresh. Let's get some runs.
Man, I already had this down in the winner's column.
I know Davey likes to play for the big inning, but I'd be a fan of some small ball here in the 8th an 9th...Another run would feel pretty good
MicheleS, I hear you and would heartily agree with a 5 game winning streak.
Hitters back to taking night off. pitchers giving 5-0 lead and gave 80% back already.
Looks like Sean for th 8th, Drew sitting down
Yes yes yes. Lets get a run here.
We need to get Zim in. no Tom foolery
La Roche is not delivering. First pitch swinging? Ughh
LaRache didn't get message
Braves lost 8-1
Big knock by the Beast
Okay.. LaRoche advanced the runner and he did get a hit earlier in that horrible shift.
And yes the Barves lost 8-2 (Manassas, they tacked on a run in the 9th)
Let's lock this one up.
Yeah baby. Morse the beast.
Sweeeeet.. Insurance run!
Thanks beast. go Ian
Nats showing a bit of fight. Maybe the pep talk is paying fividends ?
Carp and FP are getting loopy in the booth
That some great Goon Squad stats for the pinch hitters.
Why is baseball so up and down?!? Why can't they just hit the same, and pitch the same, every time out? Sheesh! :-)
Not happy with the Onion's brother.
Nats not getting the leadoff man out.
Bench is looking pretty good, at least of batting avg. RBIs, and other stats matter. I guess the Mike Cameron issue is a non-issue?
No Zim you didn't.
How does Zim miss that completely. Come on. I can see knocking it down but that is a horrible effort.
Is Sean Burnett a spy?
bad hop?
Yeah, sometimes I would prefer solid over flashy at 3rd.
A hop yes but Zim got air. A single becomes a double.
Off night by Burnett, but defense didn't help him there.
You have to get leather on that.
Davey's leaving US in to see how we do under adversity. Let's go NATS! See the curlie W, guy. Go get 'em Storen.
Yeah, Bryce needs more time in the minor leagues....
Best Throw by Harper in about a month.
And now it's Stanton....Gulp
ehay2k, not bad by Burnett, found holes.
Why are we pitching to Stanton?
This is a tougher situation for Drew than all those 9th inning saves he had last year...
JaneB, I think you are onto something. As Nats fans, we've never had to work through a full season of success, let alone a pennant race. Maybe Davey is just stretching us out.
hyperventilating
Holy sh. . C'mon where is the pen?
Storen can thank his lucky stars there against Stanton.
Nice pitch, since Stanton was way ahead of the previous heater.
Ok..2 hanging sliders and Stanton still strikes out...Go figure...
Wowie Zowie.
Storen goes Maximum Houdini.
Druuuuuu!
DRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
Onions by Drew! Huge!
