US Presswire file photo The Nationals need to win tonight at Marlins Park to avoid a six-game losing streak. |
No changes to Davey Johnson's lineup. He'll stick with the exact same starting eight that couldn't score a run off Ricky Nolasco last night, hoping these guys have more success against 21-year-old right-hander Jacob Turner (making his eighth career start).
Turner hails from St. Louis, as does the Nationals' starter tonight: Ross Detwiler. The 26-year-old left-hander was on the mound when this losing streak began Thursday night against the Braves, so it would perhaps be fitting if he was the guy to put and end to the streak.
As you know, I'm not in Miami. Please enjoy the conversation as always, and I'll be back at the park tomorrow night for the start of the Nats' 11-game homestand...

Clipp in the 9th? Time for the tangeray
Lots of bullpen drama....and Clip hasn't even entered yet! Buckle Up haha
NatsJack, because Davey wasn't conservative with Det he is now playing these innings like a playoff game.
Det was up in the 5th as the sinker wasn't sinking , I would have been Captain Hook.
You can tell with Ross when he is over throwing for Velo and giving up movement.
Having Drew back bodes well for us with the Cards.
Lets's ring the Bell for an insurance run or two.
Yowsa!
My first post in about a week.Keep the faith! It's going to be a dog race. We will finish in first.
Harper's second HR was a lot further then the Marlins guys said it was.
GYFNG!
Loving that HR! Zooooooo
That's a nice little insurance run for Zuki!
Somebody pinch me. Zuuuuuuuuuuuk. Nats jack your a genius.
Aloha means Good-Bye from Capt. Kurt!
Suzuki!
Look how Zoooo hustled. That is good to see! Wish LaRoche did that over the weekend.
Ode to the Legion of Doom:
Y'awl don't know squat.
Bryce Harper Rules
Nice boot by Reyes. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
NatsJack, it's so nice having real baseball debates with knowledgeable people.
Wow, give Reyes credit for sacrificing his body on that one, he's got a family to think about..LOl
A little 9th inning small ball would make sense here...push another one across
Like the Liberty, this Bell appears to have cracked.
Great AB from Werth, that wasn't a bad pitch
Good call, you can't throw equipment...that's a rule
CB Buckner.. jerk.
These umps gotta get over themselves. Crap
Buckner is a lousy umpire, but it may help in the long run...Bryce has to stop doing that stuff
NatsJack.. as a reformed cubs fan, I have no idea how to react to winning baseball.
Great throw by Stanton, but as Jack said, good to see Ryan stroking it to right again
Better that happens now with Bryce than early in a close game. Time to warm up the Shark!
Agree.. Bryce needs to control temper, Just remember that Greinke got tossed for spiking the ball.
Hope those last two plays don't change the momentum.
CB Buckner is an idiot. Not One reporter will ask Buckner what the help he was thinking. Harper mad at self not him.Doesn't take a rocket scientisr
Carp and FP are really going after the score keeper. At least Lombo got the hit.
Swift agree, he needs to get his temper in line or umps like CP, Angel, and Country joe will take it to him.
AN easy inning from CLIPP!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Got that feels good!
Thank the Lord. Winner!
Great game and great comments tonight..
thanks gang
The 6th thru 8th were definitely Kardiac Kids multi-innings.
Michele how's your breathing? Great game. Bryce woke us up with his 2 run shot
Haha..Bryce gave Sportscenter a lot of material tonight...
Still have to say Storen was the MVP tonight, 2nd and 3rd no out with the heart of the order....NAILS
I would like to commend SWM on a pretty reasonable night. You might get off the Legion of Doom yet.
Now let's exhale. Mike Stanton is still kicking himself on missing 2 meatballs from Storen.
Great to be up 5 games. Time for the victory swim. Good night all.
Kristina: Drew what was your approach?
Thanks to the Padres for taking 2 of 3 from the Barves!
Not upset with Buckner at all. It's a rule and the kid needs to figure these things out.
Thank goodness for the win!! I have lots of hats but it will be good to wear one for two days in a row. Will be at Nats Park the next two nights (one with red carpet and the other is our 20 game plan). With Storen looking so good and Clippard having an easy inning we just need to get to the 7th tomorrow.
Nice to see the bats coming back and I love what is going on in this last month of the season. So exciting!!
Go Nats!!
Magic number playoffs 25 division 28
Great job Drew in the 8th
Does Ozzie talk in his post-game about Bryce spiking his helmet?
I'm assuming fried chicken and beer was not served at the team meeting today...
This was a fun night. Winning is sooo much better than losing (and icing on the cake from the Pads). 5 games up.
Is Molina out for the weekend?
First 6 batters with 2 hits
3 for 5 with runners in scoring position
3 homeruns and a triple
I think they got Rabbits message loud and clear.
Go Nats!!!
Suddenly life is grand again. Go Nats!
Nice to end the losi g streak, even nicer that it was against the fish.
Funny thing about the streak and all the agonizing over it - we lost five in a row, but I looked at the WaPo this AM and we had the same record over the last ten games as the Barves. They must be killing themselves that we had a five game streak and they couldn't really make up much ground.
Natsjack, you are SO right about winning being more stressful. These years watching the Nats, the games were fun, but rarely mattered. It as easy to be a fan. Now every game matters, even loud conversations between Rizzo and Davey matter, or at least people think they do. But I am loving the journey. It helps that all our guys are easy to root for. I just WANT them to succeed.
By the way, 2 scoring changes have to occur. E on Harp in the 1st and H for Lombo in the 9th.
Even if Reyes fields that ball on Lombo he maybe beats it out.
NatsJack, did you hear what Ray just said about Det and 75 pitches?
ehay, the Braves lost 2 straight against the Dodgers followed by 2 to the Nats so they had a 4 game losing streak before beating the Nats last Wednesday.
Braves are off tomorrow then have the Phillies for the weekend.
They gave Lombo the hit. What did Ray say?
Four more wins and this will be the winningest team in this franchises history! How great to be just so much better then most of us thought! I had 86 wins which they could reach in the middle of Sept. Love being wrong here.
Had to explain the magic number to spousal equivalent tonight. Last week it was the designated hitter. Can't wait to discuss the playoff schedule with her.
Go Nats!!
Glad Davey just talked about Bryce and his emotions and is on top of it.

Thanks for the update. Nice to see that they changed it.
Gonat, you are correct. I was just pointing out that five game losing streak isn't as significant when taken in a larger context. But I am willing to bet we are less frustrated than Barves fans are right now.
ehay2k, agreed and they have to be worried about melting down further with the Cards, Pirates and Dodgers nipping at their heels in the Wild Card.
Cards just finished losing two big ones to the Pirates. Here's hoping that, just as we had a 5-game losing streak, the Cards are just starting their losing streak!
DC Wonk, lets hope!

Yea Davey sure knows how to keep em lose and focused.....These guys need kick in Ass in the worst way. They are embarrassing to watch and telling jokes in a team meeting is not getting it done!
Hey, JayB, where'd ya' go?
Davey's some inexperienced manager, eh?
Hard to believe after getting No-hit for 3 innings the 1-6 batters then got to work and put together 2 hits each for a total of 12.

Indeed. Cards lost 5-0 to the Pirates tonight, and 9-0 to them last night.
So, let's hope it's the beginning of a cold spell for their hitters.
(After all, they are going to throw a 14-game winner at us, followed by two 13-game winners)

In part, I'm guessing, a case of: "we've never seen this guy before", so, the second time through the lineup he was more familiar. Hitters made adjustments and pitcher (age 21, I think) didn't.
Huge win for the Nats. The Kid put us on his back. Love his intensity, love his competitiveness. Heard Riz on the radio today and he was saying that Harper needs to play "every damn day"....cause we are a much better team with him in our lineup.....and he's right
Manassas Nats Fan......how many complete games do our pitchers have this year?
Edwin Jackson complete game vs. Reds and Gio vs. Houston after the two exes inning game. Total 2
Well, I think I called it right today... I said Nats would have a big night and it would be a long night for Ozzie
Drew Storen was spectacular and saved the Nats... I'm little bothered that Zim did not make that play at 3rd, he should have stopped the ball and that could have been costly.
overall, i knew the boys would play well tonight
Went to bed...I am still here and I still feel that Davey and this team would be more effective if he stopped telling them how great they were and rather gave them the honest feed back.....they have lost focus and are not giving it 100% on the field. You can see that in ground balls they are no longer running out. You can see it in field and on the base paths. Did they win....yes...because Harper woke them up. Not Davey. Ian D and Harper have heart and fire......anyone else?
Ahhh, that was nice. The Nats won (#rally birthday kid) and the Bravos lost. Druuuu looked good, the Zuk-man went yard, and, oh yeah, so did Bryce, a couple of times (and got tossed but he'd already had himself a pretty good game by then). Guess that the old man could sleep pretty good last night. Yeah, I slept pretty good myself. :-)
Nats Jack....good eye on Lee. Only an old catcher would see that
Thanks, Michele. Yes, it was a joke. Not big into either pointy-ball or p.c. lectures. :-)

SWM.. definitley a joke (1a doesn't no pointy ball sport). I like twice baked with lots of cheese.
