Game 116: Nats at Giants

US Presswire file photo
AT&T Park hosts the Nationals for the next three days.
And so the Nationals are ready to open the final leg of their 10-game road trip, a big series in San Francisco against the NL West-leading Giants. They swept the earlier encounter between these two teams in D.C., but as we pointed out, the Giants are a much different team at home.

Gio Gonzalez is no stranger to AT&T Park, though, having made one start there each of the last two seasons while pitching for the Athletics. (He's 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in those games.) He'll be joined by a familiar batterymate in Kurt Suzuki, who gets his second opportunity to catch his former Oakland teammate since joining the Nationals last week.

Ryan Vogelsong, whose 2.27 ERA leads the NL (one spot ahead of Jordan Zimmermann), gets the start for San Francisco. He'll go up against the Nationals' standard lineup against right-handers, including Bryce Harper in center field, Jayson Werth in right field and Steve Lombardozzi leading off.

Unfortunately, I'm not in San Francisco for this series, but please enjoy the game and the late-night conversation...

Nats are 17-4 without Desmond. Who would have guessed that?

TyMo is a first baseman playing right field, for (correct me if I'm wrong) the first time in is life, with a 12-run lead. Cut him some slack on that, I think.

Those Panda hats are pretty great. They have ear warmers, which are very functional in S.F. in August (or in April and October in DC. The Shark hats don't do much for me I'm afraid.

Came to check in and thought I had the wrong thread. Whats up with all the negativity?

Did Jayson Werth piss in Periculum's cereal?

When will the hatred stop?

He can't help it, Ghost. He is what he is.
I believe in redemption and all, but still, some causes are lost.

Bernadina for the Sixth Man of the Year award!

You really do have to give the remaining Giants fans a lot of credit. They are still cheering their team.

Ghost, just negativity from peric because he's back on his Werth and Lannan soapbox because there's literally nothing to complain about in this game. Everyone else is pretty pumped. How could you not be after 21 hits from the Nats and a 6 hitter from Gio.

If anyone wants to see real negativity, relive the Instant Analysis thread after the July 20 meltdown. Now there's some gloom and doom for ya. Some classic predictions from peric, Fear and Ignorance, and NatsFanSinceStart too.

Nats are 19-8 since then. Wow.

Just back from the game. Wow. Was expecting a win, but not like that. Giants fans were blown away (upset with their team's performance, but also quite impressed by the Nats). And friendly. Even while losing -- badly -- they were engaging and laughing about it (in the sense that sometimes you can't do anything right). Some complaints about the 1B umpire on a couple of close calls (one of which did seem suspect from our seats). Sat near some Gio fans wearing a mix of Oakland jerseys and Nats gear; they left right after Gio was pulled in the sixth. All in all, well worth the trip from Oregon. Back again tomorrow night. GYFNG!

Looking at the highlights, seems like we were lucky in couple of at bats and then Suzuki's double just opened up the game. Good to see Danny getting some hits. Nice pitching from Gio and Gorzo, who did not give his traditional one run. :P

Great win.

btw it looks like Bernie is back in Web Gem mix with his diving grab last night. But I think Davis' better.

Werth should be back in the lineup if he is 100% only. We do have capable replacement players in Bernie and Moore for now.

Haven't yet read a gamer or boxscore but did receive a happy morning game results email. After looking at the score I had one comment: Holy [moly]!

Hey, fellow Nats fans!
As a regular reader here, I thought I'd let you guys know about http://www.reddit.com/r/Nationals/
I don't know how many of you are familiar with Reddit but we are trying to build the Nats community there. We currently have 847 members. All it takes is a moment to make a username and password.
The SF Giants reddit group invited us to comment on their thread for the game yesterday and we broke their single game comment record. They have over 3,000 users!
Let's try and show some other parts of the interwebs that Nats fans are out there.
Also, SHARK!
