This is LaRoche's first game appearance since March 15. His sprained ankle/bruised foot has healed, and he's been cleared to run the bases, so it certainly looks like he'll be good to go by Opening Day. Nady, meanwhile, is throwing his hat into the ring for the Opening Day left fielder's job with Michael Morse expected to be on the disabled list.
Nady actually was supposed to start in right field, with Mark DeRosa in left field. But DeRosa was a late scratch. No reason has been given yet, but he was dealing with a calf cramp the other day, so it might just be a recurrence of that.
Edwin Jackson is on the mound, hoping to bounce back from his troublesome start Saturday against the Orioles. Plenty of updates to come...

1:12 p.m. -- Better stuff from Jackson in the top of the first, but still a few issues. He got a couple of groundballs to start the inning, but then he walked Freddie Freeman and allowed a double to Dan Uggla down the left-field line. Jackson buckled down, though, and got Eric Hinske to loft a foul pop to third to end the inning. Hinske wasn't particularly happy about that, as evidenced by the loud expletive he screamed that could be heard throughout the stadium. Stay classy, Eric.
1:22 p.m. -- A nice, 1-2-3 top of the second for Jackson, with a couple of flyouts to left (the first one by Jason Heyward to the warning track) and a swinging strikeout of Jordan Parraz. Scoreless here in the middle of the second.
1:30 p.m. -- First chance to see Adam LaRoche against a big-league pitcher in two weeks. He grounded out to second base. Couldn't really tell a lot from that. Xavier Nady, meanwhile, took a mighty hack at a Mike Minor fastball ... and whiffed. So Nady is now 1-for-4 with three strikeouts since joining the big-league roster yesterday. Scoreless after two.
1:38 p.m. -- Jackson is getting better as this start progresses. He retired the side in the third, getting Wilson and Prado to ground out in the process. He's retired seven in a row now and has completed three scoreless innings putting only two men on base.
1:49 p.m. -- I don't believe I've ever covered a ballgame with Sean Barber calling balls and strikes. If I had, I'd probably remember it, because Barber's strike zone stretches all the way from Viera to Lake Buena Vista. Players on both sides haven't been too happy with all the called strikes. That said, you've got to be able to adjust to the conditions, and the Nats certainly haven't. It would also have helped had Edwin Jackson been able to get a sac bunt down in his first plate appearance of he spring. Time for Rick Eckstein to get to work with Jackson and Gio Gonzalez on their technique. Scoreless after three.
1:56 p.m. -- Jackson continues to get better. Set down the heart of the Braves in order in the fourth, so he's now retired 10 in a row. This game remains scoreless in the middle of the fourth.
2:02 p.m. -- LaRoche with a nice, well-struck base hit up the middle off Minor, a tough lefty. And you'll be happy to know he made that all-important "inversion" turn around first base with no apparent problems. At the other end of the spectrum, Nady followed by bouncing into a 5-3 double play to end the fourth. It's only five at-bats, but so far the veteran doesn't look so great at the plate. We head to the fifth, still 0-0.
2:08 p.m. -- Sweet sassy molassey, did Jason Heyward just crush a pitch from Jackson. It sailed well over the batter's eye in center field, which stands probably 30 feet high. Just a towering shot. And there's no wind to speak of here today. That was all Heyward. It's 1-0 Braves in the middle of the fifth.
2:17 p.m. -- Guess Jackson got a quick bunting tutorial from Eckstein between innings, because he looked much better dropping a sac bunt in the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately, Desmond popped out, stranding Carroll on second base. Braves still lead 1-0 after five as Jackson comes back out for the sixth.
2:22 p.m. -- I'm not sure Edwin Jackson could've experienced a more dramatic turnaround from one start to another. Really looked sharp today, the Heyward blast aside. His final line: 6 ip, 2 h, 1 er, 1 bb, 1 k. He'll take the mound at Nationals Park on Tuesday to face the Red Sox, then will be good to go for the regular season.
2:28 p.m. -- Ryan Zimmerman sure didn't look like he got all of Minor's sixth-inning pitch, sending a fly ball to right field. But Parraz kept backtracking to the wall, then turned around to watch the ball sail over the fence. The two-run shot is Zim's third homer of the spring and it puts the Nats up 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
2:48 p.m. -- Brett Carroll was going to make this team anyway, but a bases-clearing triple -- with Carroll eventually scoring as the shortstop's throw got away from the catcher -- probably just sealed the deal. It's a four-run play and it puts the Nats up 6-1 as the bottom of the sixth finally comes to an end.
3:58 p.m. -- So, um, yeah, it's been a little while since you last heard from me. We were down in the clubhouse talking to Edwin Jackson, then waiting for Adam LaRoche, at which point the game had ended. Nats win, 6-3. Plenty of stuff -- including the signing of left-hander Zach Duke to a minor-league contract -- to come, so check back on the homepage shortly.

The Nats have presumably had someone designated as emergency catcher every year they've been in town, whether they announced it or not. But has an emergency catcher ever been used in all that time? I can't recall an instance where that happened.
The date was May 25, 2006, in RFK. When Frank Robinson pulled Matt LeCroy out of the game after the Astros had stolen seven bases and LeCroy had made two errors, the replacement was emergency catcher ... wait for it... Robert Fick.
If Flores pinch hits in the bottom of the 8th, putting the Nats ahead, we'll just hope that Storen (or H-Rod) is lights out in the 9th and no one gets on base....

I would be very surprised if the Nats are in the hunt that Ankiel would still be the starting CF. I have to believe that Rizzo picks up a CF at the trade deadline. Then again, maybe this CF platoon will work well.

This is nice article on Brett Carroll as the 3rd catcher which fits in well with our discussion yesterday as clearly whichever catcher isn't starting (Ramos/Flores) probably becomes Davey's best RH bat on the bench.
From the Braves point-of-view, it would seem that veteran Jack Wilson has fallen into the starting shortstop job and the two youngsters who had auditioned for the job will begin the season in the minors. Wilson won't lead-off, however.

Sorry sm13, Nady did single in his final at-bat yesterday. I knew he was 1-for-4, even tweeted it correctly. Not sure why I typed it wrong here.
Also on a broadcasting note, maybe there is a lot of news about "our" owl, but I'd rather have ST news about that than news about whether a decrepit 3B will be retiring. (I've actually grown to respect Chipper but they've got my dander up, daggone it. Okay, I feel better now. :-))

Danny Espinosa this Spring has a .328 average only this is the average K's he has. He has K'd in 32.8% of his ABs this Spring.
Its still Spring but by now I would be expecting better contact.
Not sure why so many will bash Desmond while giving Espi a free pass.

Interesting broadcast tidbit about the upcoming Reds/Brewers ST game, where Randy Wolf will pitch and his brother Jim will be the HP umpire.
Oops, evidently they changed their minds and that's not going to happen, even in a ST game.

Another suggestion would be for Jordan Z. to give bunting tips to his fellow pitchers. He was one of the best in MLB I saw last year or any time in the recent past.

Again, he's not the third catcher. He's the emergency catcher. That means he's not a catcher. Just like the position player who pitches an inning in an extra-inning game because all the pitchers have been used is not a pitcher, or the safety pin you use to hold your suit pants up when the button pops off right before your big meeting is not a button.
And re the 2006 LeCroy incident, Robert Fick was not an emergency catcher. Fick was a utility guy who had catcher as one of his positions throughout his career. Indeed, he appeared as a catcher in over 20 games in 2006. He wasn't an emergency catcher, he was a third catcher.

Everytime I hear the words "emergency catcher", I think about the Orioles game when Lenn Sakata was called upon to catch. Tippy Martinez picked off three Blue Jays at 1st base in one inning because they were all taking huge leads thinking Sakata couldn't throw them out if they attempted to steal. Supposedly, the fact that Sakata had caught some in little league made Earl Weaver designate him as the "emergency catcher". Classic.
And if Desi is the "Goat du-jour" , then Lannan gets a rest also.

You won't see Carroll's name on any catcher depth chart, because he's not a catcher, nor is he being trained to be a catcher. Just like you didn't see Werth listed on the depth chart as a catcher last year, even though by all accounts he was the emergency catcher. That's the difference between a third catcher and an emergency catcher. The emergency catcher only catches if there's an emergency, when the manager needs someone to catch and there's no real catcher left. The third catcher will come in as a late-inning substitute, or even start an occasional game, because he is catcher.
Gameday says "Chris McConnell" running for Ramos. "Chris Rahl" running for LaRoche. Who are these people?

So since Werth and Harper were once catchers, are they still catchers now (4th, 5th, or 6th), or could they be emergency catchers? Does Carroll become a third catcher rather than the emergency catcher once he actually catches in a game? If not, how many times do you have to catch to become a utility guy who can catch rather than an emergency catcher? And how many years have to pass since you last caught in a game for you to return to emergency catcher status? I want us to get this all straightened out so that no one makes a fatal mistake like poor Steve M., who was just trying to call an interesting article to our attention. Sheesh.

I doubt DJ will take one of our most productive bats (Ramos) out of the game in order to do a double switch involving Flores. That would certainly evoke memories of Riggleman and his legendary doubleswitchitis, which included double switching Morse out of a game after he had already hit two homeruns.
In any event, I would guess that Flores will appear as a PH mostly in the late innings to further reduce the chances that Carrol will have to be called on to catch. And since Flores is not a defensive upgrade, there would be little reason for him to replace Ramos "in the squat" after pinch hitting. And by the late innings, doubleswitches are less necessary since the relief pitcher probably isn't going to go more than an inning anyway.
DC is cursed period. Caps make no sense and Nats will continue the the curse.
Duke started 32 games, pitched 219 innings, and, believe it or not, was an All-Star for the Pirates in 2009. Who knew?

Well, if questioning the veracity of an answer someone gave to a question I posed is "picking a fight" then I plead guilty. (And goodness knows you'd never do anything like that, would you, Section 222?)
Third catcher/emergency catcher semantics aside, the question I posed was whether any Nationals manager had ever had to use a player who wasn't normally a catcher as the catcher in an emergency. The Weaver-Sakata situation someone mentioned is a perfect example of that. But Frank Robinson replacing LeCroy with Fick does not qualify, because as I mentioned already, Fick was a catcher. He caught multiple games every season throughout his career. I'd venture to say that few if any of those situations were "emergencies" either. Can anyone come up with a situation where an emergency catcher was used by the Nats?

Yeah, me too. But I'm psyched about Stras, JZimm, Gio, EJax, Lannan, Clip, MPHRod, Lidge, RZim, Ramos, Flores (the preceding would get _any_ team up to more than 70 wins), and the potential of: Lombo, Renden, and of course Harper, and the eventual return of: Storen, Wang, Morse, and LaRoche.
