Maya made two relief appearances this spring, giving up one run over two innings in each outing. The 31-year-old right-hander, touted as a significant international signing two years ago when the Nationals gave the Cuban a four-year, $8 million contract, has plummeted down the organizational depth chart and will likely pitch out of the back end of Syracuse's rotation to open the season.
Perez, 21, impressed during his first stint in big-league camp, going 6-for-18 with four runs scored in eight Grapefruit League games. One of three center field prospects (along with Michael Taylor and Brian Goodwin) the Nationals are keeping an eye on, Perez will open the season as Harrisburg's starter.
Fulchino and Joaquin were in camp on minor-league contracts and stood little chance of making the Opening Day roster, though Fulchino pitched well out of the bullpen. The 32-year-old right-hander, who has 163 games of major-league experience, tossed four scoreless innings of relief this spring.
Joaquin, 25, allowed one run over three innings, striking out three.
Today's moves leave 39 healthy players in big-league camp.

Yea I had mentioned that Rizzo failed on his two "Major International Signings" Martin and Maya...."much better signings than Chapman" is what Rizzo said at a season ticket holders question. Yea Mike now is that working out for you and your super smart international scouting department. They have developed nothing at all from that rich international market in 8 years.
And Corey Brown Mark. Apparently, he was impressive enough to join the mix?

Who is Eury Perez? Who Jhonatan Solano? Who is Sandy Leon? Who is Wilken Estevez? And there's
much more JayB? Many are still deep in the minors
because the Nats had to literally starter over.
This stuff takes time and clearly you don't

I am worried about CMW. At first it didn't look too bad, but now with word of an MRI, etc.... When do you think we will hear? On the nationals.com list, many Yankee fans are expressing sympathy (and reliving bad memories). How strange that this happened when he was pitching against them.
If Lannen is indeed optioned at the end of camp, will he and Maya be part of the highest-paid staff in all the minors? (Seriously. Does anyone know the answer?)

Very happy to see Eury Perez starting in AA as I thought I read Mark Z tweet he was going to A.
To me, Perez looked more ready for the ml than Harper. He's a keeper and we should put him in Syracuse for an early call up. Brown doesn't impress.

JamesFan, if Eury Perez does real well in AA, he could be called up from there. It happens a lot that players skip AAA. Impressive defense, speed, but has to show he can hit consistently.
Mark writes "Perez, 21, impressed during his first stint in big-league camp, going 6-for-18" but how quick we forget 2 strikeouts were wiped out by a rainout so he was really 6 for 20 which is exactly .300 Its good in a small sample size but not enough to think he could be a mid-season call-up.
Time will tell and its encouraging. I really liked watching him play. He got nice contact for most of his hits in line drives.
One guy I watched at minor league camp yesterday was Danny Rosenbaum. It was just a bullpen session, but damn, he looked good. I was standing next to the bullpen coach, and everything he said (that I could hear) was encouraging. Big, strong power pitcher.
No real surprises with today's cuts.
For the first time in Nats history, there just isn't room on the roster yet.
Btw, Am I the only one getting bored with spring training games? Pitchers "building arm strength" over 4 innings, hitters getting "back into the grove", etc.
I'm only half serious of course (any baseball beats no baseball), but man oh man I can't wait for Opening Day.

First of all, that's not correct. Just as importantly, it was Rizzo that cleaned up the DR mess that the prior administration (Bowden) created (and got fired over). Rizzo had to start from scratch down there.
The Nats had a team ERA that was dead last in the league just a few years ago -- and was 6th last year, and stands to improve this year. Rizzo traded players like Albaladejo, Langerhans, and Capps — getting Clip, Morse, and Ramos. Rizzo was brilliant in drafting "hard-to-sign" guys in later rounds and paying them way over slot to get what was the best draft class in MLB in 2011 (during the very last that such a strategy can be used -- rules are different for 2012+)

Corey Brown has never shown the potential that Perez showed this spring, but Perez has been sent down. As another poster pointed out on another site, the Nats are going to have huge bills to keep this team together in coming years. Before we go out and spend big for a free agent, Perez should get a long look in cf. An outfield of Harper, Perez and Werth looks good to me next year--if Perez hits at AA this year.
JamesFan - I think you may need to look at Brown's Minor League numbers again. He has shown a great deal of potential there and also his slash line in spring training was almost identical to that of Perez this year. Brown has a 30 homer season in the minors, and has hit at least 14 dingers every year. Even in an injury plagued season in AAA last year he hit 14 homers and had a HIGHER OBP than Eury Perez did in A+ ball. I'm not knocking Perez as a prospect but I think a lot of people are quick to push Brown aside. From the middle of July on last year he hit over .300 with an obp over .370 and a slugging percentage in the .460s before his call up. That is nothing to shake a stick at.
