LaRoche unlikely to play Sunday

VIERA, Fla. -- Though Adam LaRoche expressed a desire to make his game debut Sunday, it looks like the Nationals are going to take a more cautious approach with their veteran first baseman.

Manager Davey Johnson said this morning LaRoche probably won't play over the weekend, "unless somehow, miraculously, he'd be 100 percent."

LaRoche has been dealing with a mild ankle sprain since Tuesday, though he's been participating in some workouts since then and expressed confidence yesterday he'd be ready to go for Sunday's Grapefruit League home opener against the Astros.

"Unless, obviously, this changes something, I plan on playing Sunday," he said yesterday.

The Nationals, though, appear to be taking an overly cautious approach with their 32-year-old first baseman, who in addition to the ankle sprain is also coming back from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Aside from LaRoche, Johnson expects to have all of his other regular position players debut no later than Sunday. That includes right fielder Jayson Werth, who appears fully recovered from the back spasms that limited him earlier this week.

We (upper Nats management), hopefully, are prepping the contingency plans......

So this is a bummer but at least we passed on Grady Sizemore. And I was one who said give him a shot but he does seem to be chronically injured.

Red Flag Alert ... Morse, get your first baseman's glove out and take grounders ... forget left field

The chances of Harper making the 25 that come North is much greater if LaRoche keeps getting nicked up.

I'm sure you're all thinking and posting this -- the front office was wiser than the we gave them credit for; there was an obvious plan all along. Morse back to 1st where he belongs, and Harper, Werth, and Bernadina in the outfield. Here we go. Again.

At this time of the year -- If a player says antyhing other than "I'm in the best shape I've ever been in, ready for my best year ever" it means . . .
