METS UPDATE
The Mets are off to a wild start to the season, having won three straight by a combined score of 22-7 but losing their last two to the Phillies 21-7. When they take the field this afternoon for their home opener, they'll be without left fielder Jason Bay (on the DL with a strained left side muscle). Old friend Willie Harris has picked up the slack, with a .353 average, a homer and four RBI already this season. Ike Davis (.348, homer, six RBI) and David Wright (.346, homer, five RBI) are also off to hot starts. The pitching staff, though, was battered around by the Phillies the last two days, leaving the Mets a bit shaken heading back home. "We'll regroup," new manager Terry Collins told reporters after yesterday's game. "We'll take a ride home and we'll finally have some people cheering for us, instead of booing us." That may not be entirely true. As of yesterday afternoon, there were still a handful of tickets available for today's home opener at Citi Field, and it's believed the Mets' season-ticket base is down to nearly 10,000.

That's gotta be a typo. Matt Stairs had a triple? Did the outfielder drop dead?

Hah! Lets see... he actually hit two triples in 2008 and had one in 2007. In my head I imagine Stairs stared down the outfielder like a disappointed father who just found out his son knocked up his high school girlfriend and rather than fielding the ball the player joined the army.

There's no Caps or Wizards game at 4:10 today, so why isn't flagship station WJFK airing the game? Do they have a contractual obligation to air Lavar Arrington and Chad Dukes talking about the off-season and locked-out Redskins over the live game of a team that they're supposedly the flagship station for?

Ah, but let's not forget what a ratings monster Lavar and Chad are. In the last ratings period, they were a whopping 18th in their time slot. Wouldn't want to pre-empt a steamroller like that, would we?

So the season ticket base is not as low as the Nationals...

I don't know who that is good news for, but it made me laugh.

I say that as a partial plan holder in 106 here in Nats Town.

What a great afternoon. Heading to my favorite establishment at 3:30 to eat, drink and watch the Nats and the Masters.

Doesn't get any better than that.

The baseball rules were bent a bit, and M. Stairs was allowed to run out each triple over three games.

Go Matt, Goooooooooo Nats!

Even more astonishing: Matt Stairs had 2 stolen bases last year. What?

Seems strange that the Flagship station wouldn't carry the game. Do the Wizards play about 7 possibly and they would hate to miss the first quarter in case the game went extra innings.

Maybe Mark can find out for us the issue here.

Stairs got both steals when the catcher started laughing to hard at his speed towards second to throw the ball.

As a precautionary measure, the Nationals have buried at 3rd base an AED should Matt Stairs hit another triple. Bo Porter has received training on how to quickly dig up the device and apply the paddles.

Picture this, if you would: Matt Stairs last five strides going into 3rd for a triple. With his arms flailing, does he go in standing up, or does he flop head first into the base?

Poor Bo Porter: he'll have to immediate administer mouth-to-mouth at that point until the trainers get there. Break out the Listerine.

Reports from ground crews, suggest that the basepaths had to be refilled after each stolen base by Stairs.

NatsJack,

I think I'm going to join you this afternoon although I may have do it in spirit only since I'll be in a local watering hole myself.

NatsJack and Knoxville, I do believe I'll knock off early today and join you as well (luckily, my boss is also a Nats fan ;-)). I'll be in my Basement Sports-Viewing Lair (TM Tracee Hamilton), but will raise a virtual toast to you - probably a hot beverage, as it's rather chilly here at present.
