Beltway Baseball - 4/27/11

Thanks to everyone who watched today's live edition of Beltway Baseball, and thanks to everyone who submitted questions for me and CSNwashington.com producer Chase Hughes.

If you missed the show, here's the recorded version for your viewing pleasure.

Does Mike Rizzo's Nats roster look more like:

A) A carefully architected MLB team - or -
B) A bunch of players that we "ended up" with?

If Matt Stairs cannot come off the bench and get a hit at this stage in his career? Aren't the Nats just wasting a roster spot?

Hey Mark, you're starting to sound a lot like Riggie! Lots of "happy talk" about how well the team has improved, how it's just a matter of time before they break out, all the while the Nats continue their slide to last place! I've seen this "movie" before and I know how it ends, sadly. No "happy talk" from me.

Good show but your producers need to weave in some better footage. That Detwiler portion had him pitching side-by-side with Joel Hanrahan in Viera so that has to be 2007 to 2009 footage.

Interesting how the competition views Jesus Flores.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings110426

From Jayson Stark:

• With so many teams looking for catching, the return of Jesus Flores -- and the Nationals' organization-wide catching depth -- has other clubs zeroing in on Washington's system. But what those clubs are finding is that, after missing nearly all of the last two seasons after labrum surgery, Flores just isn't ready.

Is Chase old enough to order a beer?

joemktg, they already used one of your questions "on air" so you can't get that answered until next weeks show ;-)

P2P: yet again I stand corrected.

RE: Flores being ready. I presume that the 'readiness' has to do with his arm; although getting some ABs wouldn't hurt.

I'll have to check some Syracuse box scores, but Flores had no problem throwing out runners in the VWL, and he had a pretty good BA.

Ramos in the same VWL had somewhat better numbers, but he played 2X as many games as Flores.

He needs some day-to-day games at AAA, but otherwise his recent VWL stats say he's gonna kick some ass in the big leagues, at some point.

Getting 'more ready' should just increase Flores' trading value, if that's what other teams want to happen.

The part about Harper getting contact lenses made me wonder, when's the last time Desmond had his eyes checked?

Good point bgib!
