Wang, Detwiler, Flores on 60-day DL

The Nationals have placed Chien-Ming Wang, Ross Detwiler and Jesus Flores on the 60-day disabled list and Chris Coste on the 15-day DL, some of the final moves necessary before their 25-man Opening Day roster must be submitted to Major League Baseball by 3 p.m.

In placing Wang (shoulder), Detwiler (hip) and Flores (shoulder) on the 60-day DL, the Nationals clear three spots on their 40-man roster, which can be used to add three non-roster spring invitees to the Opening Day roster. Two of those spots will go to Miguel Batista and Willy Taveras. The other will go to Livan Hernandez, but he won't be added until his first scheduled start next Sunday against the Mets.

Coste, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets only last week, ends up on the 15-day DL with a right elbow strain.

When is the earliest Wang/Detwiler would be allowed to pitch?

Wang and Detwiler will both be able to pitch minor league rehab assignments while on the 60-day DL, so I don't think this would put them off a late May/early June schedule.

Poor Coste. I don't know if he is really injured, but his world sure has been a bit insecure lately.

Mark:

Mark, please, these moves, especially for Wang & Detwiler, are retroactive to what date?
When does they become eligible?

This is a very short term solution to their roster problem. They're still going to need spots for Wang, Detwiler and Storen at least, over the coming weeks.

And if Flores does become healthy, there's no question how a spot gets created for him. Nieves will have to go. They can't carry 4 catchers on the 40 man roster.

They're not retroactive to any date. They apply at the beginning of the season. (otherwise people can play some pretty convoluted games with the 40 man roster...)

Are DL rules / start dates different for 60 Day vs 15 Day?
I could see this, since 60 Day frees up a roster spot.
Reyes and Lidge went 15 Day DL and are eligible to return on April 10.
So obviously their clock started well before opening day.

So 15 day DL seems to start March 26, 10 days before the season starts, and 60 DL starts April 4, the date the season starts.
Guess there are different rules.

To clear up this question: Players can be placed on the 15-day DL retroactively, as many as 10 days before the season opener. Can't do that with the 60-day DL. So Wang, Detwiler and Flores can't return until June 4 at the earliest.

Half St,

The Harrisburg roster has been set. Solano has been moved back to AA to catch their with Sean Rooney. Coste is the catcher in Syracuse for sure.
