Thompson promoted to Syracuse

Left-hander Aaron Thompson, a rising prospect in the Nationals' farm system, has been promoted from Class AA Harrisburg to Class AAA Syracuse.

Thompson, 23, was 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA in three starts for the Senators. In Syracuse, he'll take the rotation spot vacated by Luis Atilano, who made his big-league debut for the Nats last night.

Acquired from the Marlins last summer for first baseman Nick Johnson, Thompson impressed club officials this spring, posting a 1.42 ERA in three appearances. He's seen as a strong candidate to reach the majors before season's end.

That would be a pretty quick return on investment for giving the Marlins a short rental of Nick Johnson.

Don't forget, the reason the Nats got him was because they were willing to pay for all Johnson's salary last year.

That seems to be our main strategy now. Raid the Marlins until the Mets are smart enough to figure out how.

I believe Thompson got the win in his first start for Syracuse. I know that he pitched 5 innings and only gave up one run. Nice to see him doing well, and it only continues to put pressure on guys in DC to perform. Sad to see that they wasted a quality start by Stammen today.

Mark, I asked yesterday about Chuck James, who start seems to have gone under the radar. Seems like he was also impressive for Syracuse. Any news?

Also, there seems to be another Gus, so I'll change my name to Aussie Gus.

Hard to believe with only 7000 fans following the Nats, we have 2 Gus's. But so be it. I'm in Fairfax but Fairfax Gus just doesn't do it for me. :) Plus I don't comment much but am an avid reader. So if Aussie Gus is ok with his moniker, I'll stick with Gus.

But I echo Aussie Gus' request to hear more about Chuck James and Matt Chico by the way.

Looks like Thompson just lapped Tom Milone. Not that I don't expect to see Milone up before season's end as well.

Mark speaking about up and coming prospects, where is Bradley Meyers this year,DL or what? He did some great stuff at Harrisburg last year and looked ready for AAA.

Doc: Bradley Meyers is still in Viera (Extended Spring Training). Wish he was ready to go - Potomac could use him right now.

Thanks BinM! Just was wondering.

Thompson was sent to Syracuse for a spot start and is now back with Harrisburg.
